The Disco Biscuits are an entirely different band today than they were when they first broke out of Philadelphia in the mid-90s. That’s not to say that they’ve abandoned their foundation, switched gears or set sail for distant shores. The Disco Biscuits are still very much the pioneers of “trance- fusion,” bridging the gap between electronic music and jam bands. They still remain rock pioneers whose soul belongs as much to marathon dance parties as it does to live improvisational journeys. They still employ emerging technologies to help them create music that is 100 percent human although, perhaps, not entirely of this earth.

For more than a decade now, Biscuits fans have followed the band from show to show, religiously if not obsessively, because they know that every performance is a once-in-a-lifetime event. The band tirelessly explores every possibility with their songs by performing them in entirely different ways every single time. They’ve even been known to “invert” various composed sections, turning a tune on its head to see what might fall out of its pockets.

The Heavy Pets Announce Northeast Winter Tour

The Heavy Pets will close out a highly successful 2010 with a tour along the northeast corridor including dates in New York, Connecticut, Maine, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland before heading back to FL for a final leg of New Year's shows in their home stomping grounds. The Heavy Pets have grown exponentially in a very short time and the tour marks a fitting end to an extraordinary year for the band.

Ever since their first performance in 2007, the Heavy Pets became an instant national sensation through heavy rotation on the international airwaves of Sirius Satellite radio. National success did not end there; they were immediately embraced in the jam scene for their raw talent and tenacious commitment to creating great music. And like their unmistakable sound, The Heavy Pets themselves have transcended boundaries; crossing a bridge few bands survive intact --- into the periphery of mainstream music through upbeat, danceable, homegrown, skillfully executed tunes.

In the past four years alone, the band has managed to release a two-disc studio album, a live release, a three song EP and most recently, their sophomore self-titled studio release and vinyl album --- a feat few bands have accomplished in such a short time. The 2010 self-titled release has garnered critical acclaim in tight circles of virtuoso musicians and casual fans alike.

The five piece band will appear throughout the northeast for a jam-packed three week tour including their biggest performance in NYC at Highline Ballroom with progressive jam rockers, U-Melt. The band will also be playing a few venues for the first time including stops in Cafe Nine, Empire and Putnam Den as well as a homecoming performance in Syracuse NY - a town that two of the six artists call their Alma mater.

The entire tour will be mixed, recorded and cataloged by Charlie Miller of the Grateful Dead/Kimock fame and available for purchase on the Heavy Pets website through LiveDownloads.com and DigitalSoundboard.com. Amanda Palmer - CD Release Concert at Berklee Performance Center

A chance meeting with Amanda Palmer has led to the chance of a lifetime for Berklee summer student and Saratoga Springs, NY-based pianist Tristan Allen. Walking home from a rehearsal in late August, Palmer met a group of Berklee summer students on the last day of the college's five-week program. She decided to take a picture of three teens who were hugging on a bench. They obliged, and as she walked away, one of the teens, Allen, ran up after her, having been told "she plays cabaret piano music." When Palmer informed him she was in the Dresden Dolls, Allen was shocked -- he had been a fan of the band for ages -- and asked if she'd be interested in hearing his original piano music.

With no practice spaces available, Palmer said, "My house is six blocks away. I have a piano. Let's go there." So they did. Allen performed, and his music so impressed Palmer that she asked him if she could webcast to her fans on the spot. For the next hour, he played original compositions and improvisations for Palmer's online fanbase (over 450,000 Twitter followers), insuring that many would witness the event.

The response was ecstatic and demand for Allen's music was such that Palmer invited him to a studio a few weeks later to record a five-song EP. It was funded directly from her fanbase using Kickstarter, generating over $8,000 in 48 hours. The EP, recorded in September in Boston with engineer Owen Curtin and produced by Amanda Palmer, includes four of Allen's compositions and one four-handed piano duet, "János vs. Wonderland," that Palmer and Allen wrote together and recorded exclusively for the album.  You can download the MP3 of "János vs. Wonderland” duet with Amanda Palmer HERE for a taste of what you will hear on the rest of the self titled EP, Tristan Allen!

The CD release concert, An Evening with Amanda Palmer and Tristan Allen, will take place Sunday, December 12 at 7 p.m. at the Berklee Performance Center (BPC).  The concert will be streamed live via Ustream. Ticket proceeds will fund a Berklee Five-Week Summer Performance Program scholarship. The album will be available in physical and digital format on KickStarter!

Tristan Allen
Tristan Allen's music is solo piano (no vocals), blending heartful passages of improvisational rhythm and textural, cinematic drama, inviting comparisons to his heroes Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Eric Satie, and Yann Tierson. His upbringing added to his artistic coffers; his Montreal-native mother is a dance professor at a university, and his father is a top scenic designer. The family lived in Japan for several years. Allen, currently a senior at Saratoga Springs High School, plans to study piano performance and electronic music in college.

Amanda Palmer
Amanda Palmer is a performer, director, composer, and musician who is best known for her role as front woman and keyboardist for the internationally acclaimed punk cabaret band the Dresden Dolls. In 2008, Palmer released Who Killed Amanda Palmer, her debut solo album which was produced by Ben Folds. Palmer is currently on a reunion tour with The Dresden Dolls and recently ended a sold-out run of 43 shows in which she starred as the Emcee in the American Repertory Theater's production of "Cabaret" in her native Boston.

DeVotchka @ Boulder Theater | 10/29 & 30

DeVotchKa is a four piece multi-instrumental and vocal ensemble that fuses Romani, Greek, Slavic and Bolero music with American punk and folk roots.

The quartet is made up of Nick Urata, who sings and plays theremin, guitar, bouzouki, piano, and trumpet; Tom Hagerman, who plays violin, accordion, and piano; Jeanie Schroder, who sings and plays sousaphone and double bass; and Shawn King, who plays percussion and trumpet.

Numerous nationwide tours in support of self released records earned the band an underground following. Their song How It Ends was featured on the trailer for the film Everything Is Illuminated, introducing the band to a widening audience. Their performance at the 2006 Bonnaroo music festival was considered a breakout event. In between tours, the band was picked by first time film directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris to score Little Miss Sunshine, a 2006 film that would go on to garner four Academy Award nominations. DeVotchKa composed and performed the majority of the music for the film's soundtrack and were nominated for a 2006 Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack.

DeVotchKa's latest studio album, A Mad & Faithful Telling, was released on March 18, 2008. DeVotchKa is currently doing a worldwide tour in support of the album's release.

Since its debut performance on Valentine's Day 2009, the band has played numerous shows including sharing the stage with the likes of Amazing Baby, Pink Mountaintops, Wovenhand and The Entrance Band.

Kermit Ruffins Releasing Happy Talk, Playing BAM, Voodoo, Fallon!

Leading up to the release of his latest album, Happy Talk on October 26, Kermit Ruffins is happy to announce that he will be performing at The Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Red Hot + New Orleans in New York on December 3rd and 4th. A part of BAM’s Next Wave Festival, Kermit will be joined by New Orleans contemporaries Trombone Shorty, Dr. John, Ledisi, Marc Broussard, Partners-N-Crimes, and Irma Thomas to show off the best the city has to offer — from second-line stomps to the raucous energy of bounce. Following the performance, Kermit will also join ?uestlove and The Roots on December 7th on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” And later this month, Kermit will be representing his hometown at New Orleans’ Voodoo Festival. Performing on Saturday Oct. 30th at 5 p.m., Kermit will be joined by Dr. Michael White, Jeremy Davenport, Jason Marsalis, David Pulphus, and Victor Atkins as a part of Basin Street Records’ All-Star Revue. And to add to all this, the first round of 2010 GRAMMY® ballots have been released and Kermit Ruffins' Have A Crazy Cool Christmas has been entered in a number of categories.

All this leads up to the release of Kermit’s latest album, Happy Talk. Produced by GRAMMY® Award Winner Tracey Freeman (Harry Connick, Jr., Jeremy Davenport), Happy Talk is Kermit’s first collection of big band music. And to celebrate the release of the record, Kermit has scheduled an album Release Party for November 5that Rock & Bowl in New Orleans with a big band.

It’s hard to think of how anyone wouldn’t benefit from a little bit more of Kermit’s perennially positive attitude, his iconic take on New Orleans jazz, and his delicious BBQ — which he still serves after his weekly shows in New Orleans, by the way. And with the exposure Kermit has received with David Simon’s “Tremé,” Kermit has gone from New Orleans’ legendary native son to America’s new favorite jazzman.

For Kermit, Happy Talk has been a long time coming. Throughout his career, he has made no secret of his love of big band music and his admiration for legendary bandleaders like Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton and Count Basie. As the bandleader, lead vocalist and trumpeter on the new album, Kermit has taken the big band sound and given it his own “Kermit swing.” There’s his rousing take of Sam Cooke’s classic “Ain’t That (Good News)” and “If I Only Had A Brain,which Kermit infuses with a healthy dose of Latin spice. The album also pays tribute to Kermit’s musical inspiration, Louis Armstrong, with versions of songs that Armstrong made famous including “Hey Look Me Over,” “La Vie En Rose,” and “Shine.” Kermit also leads his band through his own swingin’ originals like “I Got A Tremé Woman” and “New Orleans (My Home Town).”

Kermit was born with the music in his blood. Growing up, Kermit used to skip lunch and perform second line music for his classmates before the principal would shut him and his friends down. In 1982, Kermit founded The Rebirth Brass Band with his high school classmate and tuba player Philip Frazier in Tremé, LA. The band took off after their legendary first performance at Jazz Fest and quickly became one of the most beloved brass bands in New Orleans and the United States. In 1992, Kermit founded the Barbecue Swingers, his traditional jazz quintet. Their weekly performances at Vaughan’s Lounge for 17 years and Bullet’s Sports Bar since Katrina have become staple New Orleans events, with Kermit tailgating his shows by serving up that legendary barbecue!

When David Simon decided to follow up “The Wire” with “Tremé,” he approached Kermit to have him appear on the show. As Simon put it, “There wasn't any use in casting someone else. Only Kermit can play Kermit." Truer words could not have been spoken.

Sarah Jarosz to Release “The New 45” on November 2nd

Sugar Hill Records and Sarah Jarosz are excited to announce the release of two brand new songs titled The New 45.  The songs were recorded in Nashville on the nineteen-year-olds’ summer break from New England Conservatory where she is currently a sophomore.  The New 45 combines the original composition “My Muse” (to be included on her upcoming full-length release) plus the Bill Withers’ chestnut “Grandma’s Hands”.  Both tracks are previously unreleased, and this will be the only chance for fans to purchase the crowd pleaser “Grandma’s Hands”.  The digital release date for The New 45 is November 5th; limited vinyl pressings to be made available at select outlets and on Sarah’s website later in the month.

Since her debut release Song Up In Her Head dropped in June of 2009, Sarah Jarosz has garnered the attention of fans and critics alike. The New York Times dubbed the project “an unretouched gem committed to the dark corners of bluegrass past” and USA TODAY describes Sarah’s original “Edge of a Dream” as “at once precocious and achingly pure”.  A contemporary improvisation major at NEC with a focus on vocal performance Sarah has successfully been balancing a full school schedule, national performances, while continuing to write and collect material for her sophomore release – due out Spring of 2011. Highlights over the last year include performances on A Prairie Home Companion, The Grand Ole Opry, Bonnaroo Music Festival and Austin City Limits as well as a nomination for New & Emerging Artist from the Americana Music Association.

Sarah’s Austin City Limits performance in which she’s paired with Steve Martin will air on Saturday, November 6th.  “My Muse” is one of the songs featured on ACL.  Check local listings for times.

Christopher Paul Stelling Reveals Strange Darkness

Brooklyn-based songwriter Christopher Paul Stelling unveiled a new live performance video for his song “The Museum vs. Jesus,” as well as a live cut of his captivating track, “Strange Darkness,” both of which premiered at Jonny Leather’s new site, Mecca Lecca. Although Stelling doesn’t have an official release out (yet), he’s been busy finishing up nearly 50 songs in anticipation of his 2011 debut- all while mesmerizing NYC audiences all summer.

Performing in the live setting is precisely where Stelling excels. As he puts it, “A recording, the way I make it, is the way I give a performance in a studio. I play to the room. I react to the environment live. At this point, I haven’t had the privilege of spending any serious amount of time in the studio. The recordings I have are all the result of one overnight recording session at a college upstate. I did 20 songs in 12-hour stretch. Recording is a privilege that costs money, and I’m broke. I look forward to trying someday, though.”

With a heartfelt voice, dynamic finger-picked guitar stylings, and a songwriting approach that combines folkloric, mythological, and religious imagery, Stelling has forged a style all his own, yet hauntingly familiar.

Beats Antique Play DENVER At Ogden Theatre

Growing like wildfire under the canopy of live electonica and world roots music comes a masterful merge of modern technology, live instrumentation and seductive performance, built of brass bands and glitch, string quartets and dubstep: the musical trio Beats Antique.

Since the group’s inception from the eclectic underground of San Francisco’s performance art scene, Beats Antique has been notorious for making it nearly impossible to sit still. They meld their mediums as attentively as they fuse the cultures that inspire their sound. All self produced and composed, the trio creates a unique collage: an animalistic, raw musical event that blurs the lines between the provocative, the spiritual, and the artistic, while still maintaining an allegiance to the muses of class and beauty.

The journey that led to Beats Antique today was a winding and twisted path from the west coast to the ancient trade routes of the silk  road. In this modern incarnation, the musical alliance of producers David Satori and Tommy Cappel is inspired and emphasized by their collaborative partnership with world-renowned belly dance performer and music producer Zoe Jakes.

David Satori and Tommy Cappel both trained classically before venturing to locations such as Bali, West Africa, Serbia and beyond. With extensive backgrounds in multicultural music production, and the passports to prove it, Satori and Cappel command the spectrum of live and digital instrumentation, born from Hip Hop and old school jazz.

Zoe Jakes adds a third dimension as the multi –cultural and –disciplinary dance counterpart to Beats Antique’s sound. Jakes has worked with 2 major dance troupes, Miles Copeland’s Bellydance Superstars and Rachel Brice’s Indigo Belly Dance Company, a student of ballet and contemporary techniques. Jake’s additional history with Cappel in the Extra Action Marching Band and the Yard Dogs Road Show grants some insight into the caliber of performance that is Beats Antique’s standard.

All of this sets the scene for Beats Antique’s overtly ambitious stage show, a sensory overload conquest of the festival circuit’s most riotous events, such as Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits festival, and Outside Lands, as well as a catalog of proper tours that include Bassnectar and a recent run with Les Claypool of PRIMUS in early 2010. According to Satori, the trio is excited by their ability to create a huge sound from their relatively small setup. “It gives us this whole new world of musical opportunities that we’re just starting to scratch the surface of.”

In a prolific 3 years since Beats Antique emerged, the group has released 2 albums and a pair of EPs, with a third album, Blind Threshold, on the way. Notable features of the new release include vaporous violins and Danny Elfman-esque dementia; glitchy, laser-guided harmonica provided by Blues Traveler frontman John Popper; and 2 very different vocal tracks that range between restless pop hooks and vibrant Eastern European dance loops. All wrapped into an intricate collection of heavy beats and sub bass.

Beats Antique is best imagined as an innovative creature built from the cumulative heritage of the world’s music chasing its tail. However vivid that image, when a marching band groove crashes into bluesy folk chords only to be accompanied by electronic beats and Middle Eastern melodies, you’ll still be surprised
