First Aid Kit: Jack White-Produced Third Man Records Blue Series

Rising Swedish folk-pop duo First Aid Kit are among the latest artists to take part in Third Man Records' Blue Series of releases. The special series of 7-inch records, produced by Jack White and recorded at his own Third Man Studios in Nashville, has featured releases from Wanda Jackson, Laura Marling and Secret Sisters, among others.

For their Blue Series 7-inch, First Aid Kit recorded spine-tingling covers of Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Universal Soldier" (made famous in 1965 by Donovan) and classic blues standard "It Hurts Me Too", a song much loved by fans of Karen Dalton's 1969 folk-blues version. First Aid Kit, comprised of 17 and 20-year old sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg, recorded the tracks with White during the Nashville stop on their US headlining tour in October. Joshua Hedley joins the duo on fiddle for both tracks, while touring drummer Mattias Bergqvist, their father Benkt Söderberg, and Jack Lawrence (The Greenhornes, The Raconteurs), also contribute additional instrumentation on "It Hurts Me Too." First Aid Kit won international acclaim this year for their stunning debut full-length album The Big Black And The Blue (Wichita Recordings).

Who is The White Buffalo:

Shadow Shadow Shade Release White Horse Trilogy & Debut Album

Los Angeles’ majestic septet Shadow Shadow Shade (formerly known as Afternoons) are prepping the release of their eagerly awaited, self-titled debut release.  Those who have seen their acclaimed live show know what to expect:  a lush sound that is both grand in spectacle and remarkably intimate.  With seven members that often sing in unison, the group’s haunting melodies sculpt an ethereal, choir-like effect.  Shadow Shadow Shade will be released on October 5th through the group’s own label, Public Records.  It will be available via Junket Boy and at CIMS stores nationwide as well as select additional indie outlets.  It was produced by Grammy-winning Producer/Mixer/Engineer/Musician and SSS member, Tom Biller (Karen O, Liars, Jon Brion, Sean Lennon, Kanye West).

Before the album is released the band is unveiling the three-part epic, post-apocalyptic short film known as the White Horse Trilogy that features several of their songs.  The clip stars Jason Ritter (of NBC’s upcoming drama “The Event”) and Anna WilsonWhite Horse’s director Michael Graham describes it as “an existential science fiction film that personifies and investigates the inner struggle one might go through under the distress of being ripped apart from their lover by the current world they live in, most importantly - war.”  The film is set in the future during World War III, when an unknown force has enslaved the human race.

SSS began as an art project amongst likeminded friends before evolving into an actual band that performed and recorded.  Upon hearing their demos, artist Shepard Fairey became one of the band’s early supporters  He soon designed posters for them that ended up getting plastered all over their hometown of LA.  After playing just one show, the group was offered the coveted residency at Spaceland and subsequently sold out all four weeks – this led to the SSS being invited to perform at IFC’s 2010 SXSW Showcase.

The group has created a stirring pastiche of sounds that takes cues from traditions such as psychedelia, orchestral music, shoegaze, opera, and indie rock among others.  Their enigmatic lyrics seem to have been plucked from a classic, timeless novel that hasn’t been written yet, and every song they compose builds towards a thrilling catharsis.  Click HERE to stream/download the mp3 for the album’s first single, “Say Yes.”

Shadow Shadow Shade Tour Dates:

White Rabbits Announce US Tour With Interpol

After spending the better part of two years on the road (including festival stops at Lollapallooza, Glastonbury (UK), Sasquatch, Monolith and tours with The Walkmen, Spoon, Richard Swift, The Cribs, White Denim and Tokyo Police Club) White Rabbits hunkered down in their Brooklyn practice space to set about re-envisioning the dark pop of their debut Fort Nightly, while adding new sounds and influences to achieve an original work.  The result is It’s Frightening, their second full-length album.

White Rabbits signed to TBD Records (US home to Radiohead/Other Lives/Hatcham Social) and erected a makeshift studio in their basement rehearsal space to demo new material.  Band members popped in and out over the course of several months lending ideas and personality to a new batch of songs that defy instant categorization. After enlisting tourmate, friend and songwriter Britt Daniel (Spoon) as producer, the pair began the process of exchanging demos between Brooklyn and Portland.  White Rabbits recorded It’s Frightening over the course of four weeks, only taking a break to play the Transmusicales Festival in Rennes, France.  The sessions were recorded by visionary engineer Nicholas Vernhes (Animal Collective, Deerhunter) at Rare Book Room in Brooklyn, NY.  Taking special care to recreate the unhinged nature of the original demos, the band utilized the wide range of tools in the analog-friendly studio to shape the personal spirit infused in the new tracks.  Upon the completion of tracking, White Rabbits traveled to Austin, TX to mix the record with studio wizard Mike McCarthy (Spoon, Trail Of Dead) using his exceptional ears to transform It’s Frightening into a uniquely rewarding headphone experience.

It’s Frightening plays like a classic reel of tape from start to finish. Opening with the visceral drums of “Percussion Gun,” it is clear that time-off from the road has served the band well.  The many highlights include the emotional centerpiece “Company I Keep,” the new sonic territory of “Lionesse” and the macabre lyrics of “Right Where They Left.”  Fans of Fort Nightly will find much to go weak in the knees over and new listeners are in for an awakening as White Rabbits flip the switch on an already impressive beginning. It’s Frightening is a journey into the playfully dark musings of Everyman.

The lineup : Stephen Patterson (vox/piano), Jamie Levinson (drums), Matthew Clark (drums, guitar), Alex Even (guitar), Gregory Roberts (guitar/vox). A U.S. tour will follow the May release of It’s Frightening

Rusty Anderson: Born On Earth out August 3rd

Los Angeles-based Rusty Anderson, lead guitarist for the Paul McCartney Band, will release his sophomore album, Born On Earth, late this summer, having recently inked a distribution deal with Megaforce. Anderson's album will hit stores on August 3, 2010.

Born On Earth is a loosely conceptual album that looks at modern life, contemplating what it's like, as individuals and in communities, to be alive in this era and on our planet. Musically, the album ranges from the howling, guitar-heavy title-track opener to the dreamy, power-pop of "Timed Exposure;" from the jaunty, folk-y "Where Would We Go?" to the evocative, cascading, hammer dulcimer-accented yearnings of "Baggage Claim;" and from the grand modern rock of "New Beginning" to the driving, spacey build of "Under A White Star." Throughout the album, Anderson's free, expressive guitar playing anchors the songs, whether gentle, acoustic picking or crushing riffs or a searing solo. Recognized and counted on for his virtuosic skills, it's his innate understanding of a song's needs and his use of restraint in playing that sets him apart.

This hard-wired, understated skill has made Anderson an invaluable player for a stellar laundry list of top artists that includes: Elton John, Willie Nelson, Joe Cocker, Stevie Nicks, Neil Diamond, Gwen Stefani, Regina Spektor, Nelly Furtado, Cat Stevens, Jewel, and Matthew Sweet. And, of course: Sir Paul McCartney, with whom he has toured and recorded since McCartney's 2001 album, Driving Rain. In the past nine years, Anderson has played countless shows across the world as an integral part of the Paul McCartney Band - Rolling Stone has written, "McCartney's four-piece band handled the broad range of his music seamlessly, with fiery guitar work from Rusty Anderson" - as well as on McCartney's albums Chaos and Creation in the Backyard (2005) and Memory Almost Full (2007). He also appears on four of McCartney's live DVDs.

Born and raised in La Habra, CA, Anderson first picked up the guitar at age 8 and is largely self-taught, inspired by the music of Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Genesis, The Mothers of Invention, and Mick Ronson. He formed his first band, Eulogy, at age 13 and soon was opening for bands like The Police, The Runaways, Van Halen, and Quiet Riot in southern California. Since then - in addition to lending his ample artistry to other musicians in the studio - Anderson has played in a number of bands, notably Animal Logic (with The Police's Stewart Copeland and legendary bassist Stanley Clarke) and '90s alternative rockers Ednaswap, who released four major label albums and wrote the hit single "Torn" (later covered by Natalie Imbruglia).

Anderson's debut solo album, Undressing Underwater, was released in 2005.

White Denim Play DENVER At Larimer Lounge On 1/27

At any given moment, White Denim occupy a myriad of musical spaces without locking themselves into in any particular one. The Austin based trio’s go-for-broke attack can encompass Stooges-esque punk, prog, Live At Leeds-era Who, psychedelia and post-bop jazz- all within a single song. Yet the band’s music, as evidenced in their new album, Fits, is the product of a cohesive aesthetic that is anything but random. With a rabid and growing following in the UK, and rave reviews in numerous U.S. publications such as The New York Times, White Denim have made their name not just by being great at what they do, but by seemingly being the only ones doing what they do.

Fits breathes with the sense of self-discovery that arises when a band has put the work in, exposed its true identity, and has more fully developed its craft. Lead vocalist and guitarist James Petralli says, “On our first album, we introduced a ton of ideas. Fits feels a bit more natural, more like it’s our real first record.” That becomes apparent on tracks like “Say What You Want” and “Radio Milk How Can You Stand It,” which are badass garage rock killers, shot through with an obvious intelligence that leaves the listener beguiled, overwhelmed and wanting more. NME has called Fits, “A fantastic record, a slow-burn masterpiece that buds gradually and thrives on the oxygen of repeated exposure,” and Mojo has echoed that praise, raving that Fits is, “a fantastic, exploratory record.”

With Petralli, Steve Terebecki on bass, and Joshua Block on drums, White Denim have been entrancing audiences since their formation in 2005. Originally a four-piece playing under the name Parque Touch, they became White Denim when their first lead singer moved to Russia. Playing the gritty rock clubs in the Red River area of Austin, the band quickly found their own sound - one with roots in the past, but with a thoroughly modern direction. James says, “We wanted to approach the band in an old school way, with a real focus on musicianship. With a lot of the stuff we like, there’s a focus on pushing boundaries in whatever form the players are messing with.”

Almost as soon as they formed they began recording and producing at Josh’s home studio, which is housed in his 1940’s Spartan trailer. James states, “When I think about the old rock groups, they made a lot of music in a short period of time. It was common to put out a couple of records a year while also touring extensively, and we knew that we wanted to take a similar direction in regards to recording and touring.”

In early 2007, the band released its first EP, “Let’s Talk About It,” (on vinyl) and quickly followed it up with a nine-song tour EP titled, “Workout Holiday,” sold exclusively at shows. Catching the attention of the tastemakers at RCRDLBL.com, three of White Denim’s songs were included on an exclusive online-only EP that was released through RCRDLBL’s inhouse digital imprint in early 2008. This EP produced positive notices in both Rolling Stone and Drowned In Sound. Exposion, the band’s first full-length, came in 2008, earning accolades from a multitude of publications. PopMatters said of the band, “They’re as catchy as any pop band going, but they also handle strange sounds, texture, and off-kilter compositions as well as your favorite noise experimenter.”

But it’s been White Denim’s live show that has been the catalyst for spreading the band’s reputation. Intensely kinetic and bordering on frenzied, the band attacks each song in its own inimitable fashion; with Josh’s combustible drumming driving each twist and turn of the action. James’s guitar and vocals operate, by turn, as dagger and balm, living out the drama and intensity of each song. Steve’s bass functions as both lead instrument and anchor, pushing the music into further realms while knowing exactly when to bring things back to the earth.

The U.K.’s reaction to White Denim has been nothing short of ecstatic, and the band has responded in kind. Signed to Full Time Hobby in the U.K., the band’s critical reception has been incredible, with raves from NME, the Guardian and more. The band has really put their time in - as James recounts, “Last year, we did 30 weeks in the U.K., and really attacked it there. The audience there has truly made us feel at home there.”

Fits was born out of the collaborative process that followed the band home after so much time on the road. James explains, “When we came off tour, we let the ideas that were generating the most excitement in the group come to the fore. If something wasn’t immediately happening with the tune, we junked it.” The stylistic differences between the harder rocking and jagged first half of the album and the soul-fused second half were also a conscious move on the part of the band. “We definitely tried to do an A-Side/B-Side thing - the B-Side is our breezy soul side.” And indeed, songs like “Paint Yourself” and “Regina Holding Hands” provide softer, more melancholic and almost trippy elements to White Denim’s sonic palette, songs that wash over the listener joyously, rather than thunderously.

With the release of Fits, White Denim have fashioned their most definitive expression yet of the full dimensions of their sound. It’s a sound that is uniquely the band’s own – and it is a sound that is winning converts one by one with its sheer power, nuance and inventiveness. Remaining on the road for the rest of 2009 and into 2010, White Denim will continue to defy genre labels and easy categorization, rewarding listeners and concertgoers with a musical experience that is way beyond the current usual order of things: an experience that coheres like few others, even amidst the clamor and the storm.
