Tea Leaf Green pays tribute to the Big Man at the Stone Pony

This past Sunday, Father’s Day, Tea Leaf Green performed at the fabled Stone Pony bar and frequent home of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band in what became a tribute concert for legendary saxophonist Clarence Clemons. Springsteen and Clemons met at the Asbury Park bar in 1971, a story both men have told onstage for the past 40 years. Clemons, 69, the “Big Man” in Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, died Saturday night.

Fans who came to pay respects were given free admission to evening headliners Tea Leaf Green who showed love and admiration for Clemons. “It was an honor to pay tribute to ‘The Big Man’ at our last show on this leg of the tour,” said guitarist/vocalist Josh Clark. “We saw firsthand how much Asbury Park and the Stone Pony loved him. We listened to him play all day in the van on our way down there.”

Fellow band member Trevor Garrod added, “When we found out Clarence had died we where still a few hours from Asbury Park. It was a beautiful day; the sun was setting into a riot of crimson clouds; flowers and chalk drawings lined the sidewalk outside of the club. The Atlantic Ocean's waves rolled calmly in across the street. Though we where only coming through coincidentally, we nonetheless felt honored to be part of the celebration of this great musician's life. We couldn't help but feel that somehow the universe was encouraging us to keep up this tradition of rock 'n roll. After we played our set, I jumped into the moonlit sea with some kids who had come to watch the show. I couldn't help but wonder if, back in the day, Clarence had ever done the same. He will be missed.”

San Francisco Bay Area troubadours Tea Leaf Green are newfangled Lost Boys, a traveling gang dedicated to seeking wisdom and experience in places both glorious and seedy. The band’s summer tour kicks off on July 2 in Colorado on the heels of its seventh studio album, Radio Tragedy!, freshly released through Thirty Tigers.

In many ways, this quintet is the essence of rock’s adventurous, playfully outlaw spirit, all of which ultimately fuels songs that resonate with classic vibrations, open-ended possibilities and radio-ready charm. With Radio Tragedy!, Tea Leaf Green have made a record that’s both timely and timeless - a strange, beautiful space that they inhabit naturally and gracefully.

Dead.net proudly presents The Family Dog

They may have thrown some epic parties, but it's The Family Dog's innovative art that remains their true legacy. In 1966, free-spirited rock promoter Chet Helms teamed up with a commune of hippies to create The Family Dog. The collective put on some of the greatest rock concerts of all time. To spread the word about its live events, they hand-picked a small army of graphic artists to design promotional posters and handbills. The most influential of the group - Rick Griffin, Alton Kelly, Victor Moscoso, Stanley Mouse, and Wes Wilson - became known as the “San Francisco Five.” The San Francisco Five would go on to produce some of the most iconic and memorable imagery in the history of rock and roll. Their art reflects the bold experimental freedom of the era, serving as a guidepost for future generations who long for peace, love, and understanding.

Architecture in Helsinki Get Remixed by Javelin, New Album Out Today!

Masters of modernist pop Architecture in Helsinki release their new album Moment Bends today on V2/Cooperative Music USA/Downtown Records.  To celebrate the occasion the band is sharing a remix of their single “Contact High” by Brooklyn duo Javelin.  Click HERE to stream/download this lush, shimmering take on the song.  Click HERE to watch the video for the original version of “Contact High,” which Paste Magazine calls “summer’s first mixtape must” and Prefix Mag calls “absurdly catchy.”  Don’t miss the band as they kick off their US tour next month!

In large parts, Moment Bends is in dialogue with the dance floor, without being a slave to any particular rhythm.  Like the best pop albums it bubbles with an immediacy while revealing new layers after repeated listens.  It also showcases the band’s most concise and sophisticated songwriting yet.  Recorded over a two year period in the their studio space, Buckingham Palace, songwriter Cameron Bird says: “Moment Bends was all about being at one with our ideas, obsessed with popular music and falling in love with our hometown.  We wanted to build a record to get lost in.  A record that always feels exactly what you are feeling”.

Rex Foundation Positive News & New Solar Energy Connection

The Rex Foundation community of grantees and supporters provide positive news to remind us of all the good work being done every day to address current challenges.

Check out our recently published Food for Thought feature about the International Senior Lawyers Project (ISLP), recipient of the 2004 Rex Foundation Bill Graham Award.  As you will see, since 2001, ISLP has been providing much needed legal expertise to help nations across the world effectively deal with major challenges from natural disasters to political upheaval.  Even as we read about the current struggles in the Middle East, ISLP is providing helpful expertise and guidance.

Last month, Sarah Crowell, Artistic Director of Rex Grantee Destiny Arts Center, was honored by San Francisco's Public TV Station KQED as a 2011 "Women's History Hero".  Here is more information about the honor, and why Sarah's work and that of Destiny Arts Center are so deserving of this recognition.

Knowing that migrating to renewable energy, along with conservation, is vital to environmental health, we are pleased to announce a connection with Sungevity, a company seeking to expand availability of affordable solar energy while also supporting non-profit work.  Click here to get the details on how Sungevity's solar energy lease program might work for your home and, if so, how Rex will be supported as well.

The Rex Foundation is honored to be a vehicle for charitable contributions to support the essential work of grassroots non-profit programs, like HeadCount, pictured here.   The following are different ways you can help support Rex Foundation work while also enjoying great music and connection:

  • Join Kuli Loach on Sunday, April 17 when they will play Grateful Dead music at the historic Blue Moon in Seattle, WA, helping celebrate the venue's 77th anniversary while also supporting Rex.  Here are the details. We thank Kuli Loach and all the other musicians and businesses who are part of the Rex Musical Caravan for their ongoing generosity and support of Rex and grassroots giving. • We are excited to announce the release of 12 tracks of outstanding music from the December 4, 2010 Rex Benefit Concert "The Wheel - A Musical Celebration of Jerry Garcia." Enjoy the unique musical experience that took place at The Fillmore in San Francisco, bringing together Jesse McReynolds, Peter Rowan, David Nelson and their respective band members to play Jerry Garcia/ Robert Hunter and traditional American roots songs together.
