Sid Griffin & the Coal Porters come to Western USA

Musician/writer/author/broadcaster Sid Griffin rose to fame in Los Angeles as leader of Island recording artists the Long Ryders, one of the first bands of the alt-rock era to incorporate the influences of Gram Parsons and the Flying Burrito Brothers and the Byrds. Yet in recent years, he’s made his home in London, where he leads the Coal Porters. The band has played only a limited number of American shows since their formation in the 90s.

This spring, the Coal Porters will return to the scene of the crime — Los Angeles and the West Coast — where they will play three shows in the L.A. area, one in San Francisco and a coveted spot at the Stagecoach festival on Sunday, May 1.

When the Ryders ended, native Kentuckian Griffin formed the Coal Porters, which initially had a fluid lineup, and relocated from L.A. to London, where he hooked up with Scottish stand-up comedian Neil Robert Herd (sound engineer on Wasp, Best Live Action Short Film winner at the 2004 Academy Awards). The duo started out playing electric, but quickly tired of hauling around amps and drums. As a result of a dare, the Coal Porters decided to play acoustic bluegrass versions of their material at a charity concert in London. The crowd reaction affirmed that the band had found its true calling and said goodbye to electric instrumentation forever.  En route from then to now they picked up Canadian fiddle virtuoso Carly Frey and London’s noted local attorney and doghouse bassist Andrew Stafford. In 2010 they were blessed to secure the services of one of Britain’s best young banjo players, John Breese. With this impressive lineup, the Coal Porters were ready to take on the world.

With a published author, a professional comedian and a barrister in their ranks they are the only band who can sue themselves over copyright and joke about it.

In April 2009, after traveling halfway across the globe, the Coal Porters arrived outside of Durango, Colorado, played two killer shows at the famous MeltDown Festival (Colorado’s answer to the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco), and laid down the tracks to their first album in two years. Durango was recorded in two weeks in the Colorado mountains at the Kozy Tone Studio of legendary producer Ed Stasium (Ramones, Mick Jagger, Phil Spector, Smithereens, Belinda Carlisle, Jeff Healey Band, and the Long Ryders).∂ƒƒ The entire album was cut Basement Tapes style, with the same authenticity of Dylan and The Band. Everyone crowded in one room. Overdubs were few and laughter frequent.

Durango was released in January 2010. It faithfully represents the Coal Porters’ hot live act, and creates new moods of its own. This highly anticipated follow-up to 2007’s Turn the Water On, Boy! is a clear country-mile step forward, evoking the sounds of a bluegrass Clash, or a Bill Monroe for the 21st century.

David Fricke wrote in Rolling Stone, “The Coal Porters [have] been going for nearly two decades . . . and [have] evolved from a deeper mining of the country in the Ryders’ acid-tinted drive to a pure acoustic bluegrass written and played with natural — in Griffin’s case, native — flair on Durango.”

Fricke appeared with Griffin in a one-on-one interview panel at the Americana Music Festival & Conference, held in Nashville in September 2010.

Awarding Durango four stars in March 2010, MOJO magazine said: “The audio equivalent of a feel-good movie . . . recorded all in one room, with everyone as much intent on capturing the vibes as much as the undoubted quality of the music . . . gorgeous.”

Blurt noted, “Seven albums on, the Coal Porters have a reputation they can bank on. And with Durango this durable bunch has successfully added even more fuel to their fire.”

The Coal Porters are five musicians from four different parts of the planet who came together as an incredibly powerful fusion of talent, the world’s first “alt-bluegrass” act.

“For all the satisfaction of success in Europe and becoming the UK’s leading ‘alt-bluegrass’ ensemble,” says Griffin, “there is nothing to compare to the Coal Porters heading for my musical home in California. My days in Los Angeles with the Long Ryders were so wonderful and I was so blessed with so many friends that it is high time I took the band to the left coast to show ’em all what we can do. I am extremely proud of my time in the Golden State and extremely proud of the music my Coal Porters are making right now so to put the two together is gonna be a true, true week to remember.”

Scala & Kolacny Brothers North America Tour

Winning over the hearts of critics at the LA Times, NPR, USA Today, Billboard, MTV.com, AOL Spinner and Stereogum, all-female Belgian rock choir sensations Scala & Kolacny Brothers continue their US breakthrough with the release of their full length self-titled debut and a North American tour this spring.  The album, out March 15 on ATCO, features imaginative reinterpretations of songs from Radiohead, Kings of Leon, Depeche Mode, Nirvana and others, as well as the three haunting original compositions by Scala & Kolacny Brothers.

After a performance at SXSW, Scala & Kolacny Brothers will kick of their North American tour April 7 in Vancouver, BC.  The group will hit major cities across the US and Canada, playing renowned rock venues, such as New York's Webster Hall and Los Angeles' El Rey Theater, while also debuting at Coachella on April 15.

Led by pianist/composer Steven Kolacny and his brother, conductor Stijn Kolacny, Scala & Kolacny Brothers "brilliantly haunting" (EW) version of Radiohead's “Creep” underscored the trailer for 'The Social Network’ to great acclaim (viewed by 4-million-plus on YouTube alone), and the group has continued to build buzz and fans stateside ever since.  The LA Times praises their “sweet songbird attack,” and USA Today raves that their takes on rock classics "Creep" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit” are "even more haunting than the originals.”

Watch a live performance of Scala & Kolacny Brothers original “Self-fulfilling Prophecy” here.

Tahiti 80 to Tour US in March

French sextet Tahiti 80 are gearing up to release their new full-length, The Past, The Present & The Possible, but first the ever-prolific group will drop the Darlin EP on January 31st (both will be released on their own label, Human Sounds).  The band is offering one of the EP’s track for free, a banging remix of “Darlin” by Detroit-based producer Jimmy Edgar, who has released music on Warp Records and K7 Records.  If you didn’t catch the premiere at About.com: Dance Music/Electronica, click HERE to stream/download the track.  You can also catch them on the road on a brief US tour this March, when the band hits Chicago, New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

Tahiti 80 whip up a danceable mix of live instrumentation and electronic sounds filled with breezy melodies and intoxicating grooves.  The band’s debut album, Puzzle, was released by Minty Fresh in the U.S. in 1999, and was critically acclaimed as a refreshingly upbeat nod to late 60s West Coast pop (particularly the Beach Boys). The album also placed Tahiti 80 squarely in the center of the  “French Pop Invasion” that was hitting the U.S., along with fellow French bands Phoenix and Air (most notably).  The band has been relentlessly productive ever since, having released an astounding ten EP’s  and The Past, The Present & The Possiblemarking their sixth full-length album.

Super 400 Announces February Tour through Western US

Coming off multiple sold-out shows across Europe, Northeast power trio Super 400 will head west for a string of dates with Stockholm Syndrome, featuring Jerry Joseph and Widespread Panic’s Dave Schools. Kicking off February 18 & 19 at The Independent in San Francisco and concluding on February 26 at Boulder’s Fox Theatre, the two bands will play eight rock shows in nine days.

Formed in the mid-‘90s by guitarist/vocalist Kenny Hohman, drummer Joe Daley and bassist Lori Friday in Troy, NY, Super 400 has been winning fans over around the world with a chest-rattling rock & soul approach inspired by their heroes Cream, Zeppelin, Van Halen and the classic sounds of Motown, Stax and Muscle Shoals. Hailed for transcendent live shows where the band encourages taping, the trio was awarded their own official holiday on February 25, 2006 by the mayor of Troy: “Super 400 Day.”

Following the success of 2009’s critically acclaimed Sweet Fist, Super 400 is currently at work on its fifth studio album.

Lindstrøm Plays NY, LA, & SF in Feburary

It’s a rarity for Norway’s Lindstrøm to cross the pond more than once a year, but after a quick trip over last November, he’s once again gracing both New York and San Francisco in February with what will be his second show in 6 months, as well as making a highly anticipated first-ever appearance in Los Angeles at the Vanguard on February 11th.

LINDSTRØM TOUR DATES

Thur.    Feb. 10           New York, NY @ Santos Party House

Fri.       Feb. 11            Los Angeles, CA @ The Vanguard

Sat.      Feb. 12           San Francisco, CA @ Mezzanine

--

While Lindstrøm’s label, Feedelity, has predominately been a vehicle for his original space-disco creations, Lindstrøm has brought another cosmic musician into the fold by way of a remix.  Glasser’sMirrorage” has been given the Lindstrøm treatment, though rather than overwhelming the mildly paranoid track with additional elements, he’s extended the aural odyssey by featuring the core components.  Cameron Miesrow’s witchy vocals mingle with the hypnotic, pulsating beats that seem to breathe with a life of their own.  Ominous bells twitch and tingle behind a smoke cloud of electronic rhythm and Meisrow’s tribal narrative is further deconstructed to create an abstract masterpiece.

Rubblebucket Announce Fall “Triangle Tour”

On October 19th, Brooklyn’s 8-piece Rubblebucket will release the Triangular Daisies EP.  To coincide with the EP’s release, the band will embark on the “Triangular Tour” that includes a weekend stint in San Francisco, a two-night Halloween special in Burlington, VT, and stops up and down the East Coast, from Maine to The Bear Creek Music Festival in Live Oak, FL.  Fans in Burlington and New York are in for an extra special treat when Rubblebucket teams up with Hack Interactive to create an interactive, multimedia stage design experience.

Since the band formed in 2007, pinning down their sound has remained a difficult task.  At times, the band sounds like Brooklyn’s answer to Fela Kuti, with frenetic afrobeat rhythms rubbing elbows with infectious indie-pop hooks and catchy synths.  Frontwoman/saxophonist Kalmia Travers explains, "We're children of this noisy age, with access to so much music from across time and space. We soak up all the sounds. What comes out can be unpredictable, but it will be uniquely ours."  Uniquely their own, indeed.

Regardless of where you place the band on the spectrum, the Triangular Daisies EP is a dramatic step forward for the band.  Opening with the title track, “Triangular Daisies” the band pairs down the fiery grooves found on sophomore album Rubblebucket to craft a psychedelic indie-pop gem, complete with plaintive horns and infectious whistling.  The track is immediately followed by the band’s left-field take on The Beatles’ “Michelle,” turning McCartney’s somber ballad into spacey, orchestral groove. The EP also features the band’s undeniably contagious single “Came Out of a Lady,” the recording of which was featured in the first episode of The Masters of Their Day project at Kaufman Astoria Studios.  The Triangular Daisies EP ends on a high note with the hypnotic live track “L’homme,” recorded during their set at Higher Ground this past May.

Rubblebucket started — like most great bands — at an art show in a defunct milk bottling plant in Burlington, VT.  Kalmia Travers met Alex Toth and soon formed Rubblebucket, building an eight-piece band from scratch with Toth as bandleader and trumpeter, and Travers taking on lead vocals and sax.  The band released their debut album, Rose’s Dream, as The Rubblebucket Orchestra in 2008.  The following year proved to be a big one for the band, with Rubblebucket releasing their self-titled sophomore album.  SPIN hailed the band as a "must-hear artist from the 2009 CMJs,” and the band won that year’s Boston Music Award for Live Act of the Year.  The band then relocated to Brooklyn, and has since been hard at work recording the follow-up to Rubblebucket, which is slated for release in early 2011.
