SF Giants pay homage to the Fat Man

The San Francisco Giants will pay tribute to music legend Jerry Garcia on Monday, August 9, when they face the Chicago Cubs at 7:15 p.m. Garcia and the Grateful Dead are synonymous with San Francisco and each year the City celebrates “the days between” which are the days within Garcia’s birthday (August 1) and the day of his passing (August 9).

San Francisco’s ‘Dead Heads’ and music fans alike will gather at AT&T Park to pay homage to Jerry Garcia on the 15th anniversary of his passing. Fans who purchase a special event ticket will receive a seat in the Jerry Garcia designated section at AT&T Park; a limited edition Jerry Garcia/Giants themed bobblehead, portraying Garcia’s National Anthem performance at Candlestick Park back on April 12, 1993; and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Jerry Garcia and Grateful Dead inspired Rex Foundation. Tickets can be purchased by visiting sfgiants.com/specialevents or by calling 415-972-2233.

All fans attending the game will be treated to pre-game, live musical performances from some of San Francisco’s most popular Jerry Garcia and Grateful Dead cover bands and a home plate ceremony featuring a video tribute to Garcia with many of his family members in attendance. Garcia’s daughter, Annabelle Garcia, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch and Grateful Dead member Bob Weir will perform the National Anthem and Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart will lead fans in a special 7th Inning Stretch celebration. In an attempt to set an official Guinness World Record for the world’s largest kazoo ensemble, Hart will lead more than 7,000 kazoo playing fans in “Take Me Out To The Ball Game.”

For fans interested in attending a Jerry Garcia/Grateful Dead VIP Party, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in AT&T Park’s new Triples Alley location, a limited number of tickets are available for purchase. This event will include an exclusive Q&A session with Garcia’s family members, friends and Rex board members. Grateful Dead band mates Bob Weir and Mickey Hart will also be in attendance. KNBR’s morning show host Paul McCaffrey will moderate the discussion. A Jerry Garcia and Grateful Dead cover band will hold a private show for those in attendance. Tickets are available for $175 and include access to this premium space; a Lower Box game ticket; the limited edition Jerry Garcia bobblehead; food and beverages; and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Jerry Garcia and Grateful Dead inspired Rex Foundation. Tickets to this event can be purchased by visiting sfgiant.com/specialevents or by calling 415-972-2233.

Dark Star Orchestra Announces Jeff Mattson as Lead Guitarist

Dark Star Orchestra, the faithful interpreters of the music of the Grateful Dead, announced today that Jeff Mattson will be taking on Jerry Garcia role and welcomes him as a full time member of the group. The band’s statement reads:

“After months of touring and playing with Jeff, we have decided to offer him the full time gig, which he has gratefully accepted.  Jeff has blown us away with his energy, licks, and presence on stage. He is a great guy, an inspiring musician and so much fun to perform with, we cannot wait to get back out there and mix it up with him once again. We are having more fun than ever and are looking forward to seeing you all at the upcoming shows.”

A veteran of more than 30 years on the road, Jeff was a founding member of The Zen Tricksters and has performed in two bands of actual Grateful Dead members with Phil Lesh & Friends and the Donna Jean Godchaux Band. RELIX Magazine recently praised his “eerily on-point Garcia interpretations” and Jambase.com noted “Any doubts about new lead guitarist-singer Jeff Mattson were erased by a breathtaking "Eyes of the World" where Mattson continually proved a real prize in his new role, bringing all his years in The Zen Tricksters to bear and then upping the ante a bit more.”

Having joined Dark Star Orchestra for two nationwide tours, fans and critics have already weighed in with PopMatters.com marveling how “Mattson’s guitar playing matched every intricate moment,” and Hidden Track praising his “soulful vocals and dense solos to anchor the major suites, chipper, airy ones to flesh out the rockers… his improvisational style is intense but not ostentatious.”

A video clip of Jeff Mattson performing with Dark Star Orchestra doing a scorching version of "Viola Lee Blues" at The Klein in Bridgeport, CT can be viewed online here: http://www.vimeo.com/9585290.

Dark Star Orchestra will be performing at clubs and festivals across the nation this summer, all announced dates are listed below:

Big Head Todd and The Monsters announce New Album and Summer Tour

Big Head Todd and The Monsters release their brand new studio album, Rocksteady, on July 20 on Big Records. In support of Rocksteady, Big Head Todd and The Monsters hit the road for a sprawling summer tour, including a recent big play at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre, where they celebrated the 20th anniversary of Midnight Radio by performing the album in its entirety.

For Rocksteady, Big Head Todd and The Monsters’ eighth studio album, the band draws on a surprising body of influences. The album cuts across a broad swath of stylistic terrain including R&B, reggae and even punk rock. Throughout, the collection’s 11 tracks are funky, lilting, and melodic - all the qualities that have become signature to the band's sound during their 25 years of making music.

“It’s a soul/Caribbean record that rocks,” frontman Todd Park Mohr says. “We almost went out of our way to take all the rock out of it, but it really rocks. It’s the very first album we’ve ever done that’s cohesive. It makes a difference, in terms of this album standing out from our other albums.”

Rex Foundation Grant for San Francisco's Jerry Day

The Rex Foundation is pleased to announce a special grant to support Jerry Day in San Francisco. Jerry Day is a civic and cultural event that celebrates San Francisco native son - Jerry Garcia. The free event captures the true spirit of Jerry Garcia and celebrates his legacy at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater, recognizing his childhood Excelsior District roots.

Jerry Day is held annually near Jerry's birthday, August 1. The 2010 event is Sunday, August 1. Jerry Garcia Amphitheater is in the Excelsior District at McLaren Park in the City and County of San Francisco. The outdoor amphitheater was renamed Jerry Garcia Amphitheater after the musician's death in 1995. Jerry Garcia was a force within the Grateful Dead for thirty years. He was a unique musician spawned from the bluegrass jug band era following San Francisco's Beat Generation. He and Grateful Dead band mates and a plethora of fellow musicians explored musical themes and genres well beyond the psychedelic splendor of the Summer of Love.

Rex Foundation acknowledges the wonderful work of the Jerry Day committee and its association with the San Francisco Parks Trust. The Jerry Day Celebration commemorates and invigorates the community that continues to grow because the music Jerry created remains vital. Many people only see each other at these types of events where the music is the glue that binds and creates the common shared experience. Jerry's following was enormous and included other bands and collaborations in addition to the Grateful Dead. Jerry may be gone, but we're not. His spirit is alive and replays through events like Jerry Day. The Rex Foundation board of directors is delighted to assist this worthy endeavor.

"Jerry Day" is one of those special sweet neighborhood events that San Francisco is famous for.  The amphitheater at McLaren Park has been renovated and improved greatly since it's renaming ceremony.  Come on out and hear some good music, walk through a beautiful park, and enjoy the grass lawn and Bay view in Jerry's old neighborhood.  Let the music flow free!" ~Carolyn Garcia

Furthering what the Grateful Dead started 26 years ago, the Rex Foundation endeavors to fund grassroots programs that are often under the radar of larger funding entities, yet work in bold, innovative ways to carry out essential work toward a healthy environment, promotion of the arts, protection of indigenous cultures, assisting others less fortunate, building strong communities and educating children and adults everywhere.  The Rex Foundation has distributed $8.6 million in grants to over 1,000 programs across the U.S. and internationally, while also carrying out initiatives that foster creativity and positive community connections.

THE WHIGS "IN THE DARK" OUT NOW!

Known for their enthralling live show, the Athens, GA trio The Whigs are currently on tour with Band Of Skulls and will make their Late Night with Jimmy Fallon debut April 27th. You can check out their recent appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman performing "Kill Me Carolyne," their raucous first single from their recently released album IN THE DARK. The song which brings a memorable strength to this exciting new collection, is now available for free download on the bands website and the video premieres today on Yahoo Music.
IN THE DARK is the follow up to the band’s two much-admired albums – GIVE ‘EM ALL A BIG FAT LIP and MISSION CONTROL. With each release, The Whigs have won over fans and critics with their pedal-to-the-metal power earning them universal praise as one of America’s finest young rock ‘n’ roll bands. Filter Magazine hailed for “artfully combining the disenchanted swagger of ‘70s punk with the infectious, catchy bounce of ‘60s pop” and Maxim Magazine simply called “riff-tastic.”
Spending much of 2008 and 2009 on the road, The Whigs have completed several tours with Kings Of Leon, The Kooks, Drive By-Truckers and others, have performed at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Fuji Rock and T in The Park, among other festivals and worldwide stops and have performed on The Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
Developed through years of non-stop touring and two critically acclaimed albums, IN THE DARK, with its impressive range and undeniable vigor, sees The Whigs doing what all-great bands do – furthering their artistic scope with each successive effort.

Amelia's Mechanics Announces Plans for New Album + Tour Dates

Amelia's Mechanics is fronted by Greensboro, NC singer-songwriter's Molly McGinn and Molly Miller and backed by a talented group of musicians out of Nashville, TN. Despite what the oil-and-iron name might suggest, the women of Amelia's Mechanics swap that toughness for a more urban, sophisticated take on Americana music, using luxuriating harmonies and classical swells to temper their lyrical frustrations with love and life. The instrumentation and vocal harmonies of Amelia's Mechanics result in a genre-busting sound best described as "vintage country with a moonshine concerto."
The band released their debut album "North, South," produced by Jim Avett (father, The Avett Brothers,) in February of 2010 to critical acclaim and embarked on an inaugural tour pleasing audiences from Florida to West Virginia. Select performances in May will feature support from guitarist Daryl Hance (guitarist, J.J. Grey & Mofro.)
Amelia's Mechanics will begin recording a follow-up album this summer in Asheville, NC at the wonderful Echo Mountain Studios (Smashing Pumpkins, The Avett Brothers, Band of Horses) with three-time Grammy-winner Steven Heller (producer, David Holt's Stellaluna, Doc Watson's Legacy) and fellow Greensboro, NC singer-songwriter Laurelyn Dossett (songwriter, Ana Lee) at the helm. A release date has not been set for the new album.

Recently described by Recoil Magazine as "one of Michigan's most promising bands," UV HIPPO mixes tight funky jams with new dance beats and strange effects for a killer musical experience. The band performs an eclectic array of composed and improvised original material, dancing between genres of funk, jazz, electronica, reggae, bluegrass, and progressive rock.

The Marquee Magazine " experiencing UV Hippo live, jam band fans are quickly reminded why they fell in love with thegenre’s sound in the first place..."

Detroit Free Press "... music Frank Zappa would be proud of..."

Lansing State Journal "UV Hippo is all the rage these days... and fans all over are hooked."

The word is out, and the band is seeing more and more repeat offenders traveling further distances to develop their MidWest following into a national sensation. With a solid foundation of dedicated fans
leading the way, UV HIPPO is embarking on their Winter 2010 Tour, returning to Pennsylvania and Iowa, performing for the first time in Kentucky and Missouri, spending some time in the MidWest and hitting
Colorado for the third time in nine months. UVH kicks off their Colorado run with back to back shows opening for Garaj Mahal at Hodi's Half Note in Fort Collins and Agave in Avon on February 17th and 18th. This is not the first time these outfits have shared the stage, playing two high energy, insane shows in Kalamazoo and Chicago together at the end 2009. UVH is extremely excited about their time with GM in Colorado, as Fort Collins promises to be a night of true badass-ery!

The Winter 2010 Tour is just the beginning of an ambitious list of new initiatives, long-term goals, and a commitment to responsible touring for UVH this year. After signing with Simon Says Booking Agency and
playing the Rothbury Pre-Party with EOTO in 2009, UV HIPPO is ready for a full plate. In addition to releasing their third full length studio album later in 2010, the band plans on touring both coasts and
everywhere they can in between, including stops on the national festival circuit.

A significant part of the 200-show agenda ULTRAVIOLET HIPPOPOTAMUS has planned for 2010, will be promoting green principles and sustainable touring. An important step in making this goal a reality
is investing in a used diesel shuttle bus and converting the bus to run on veggie oil, obtained through the discarded oil from FastFood joints! Coined, the "Hippopota-bus", this 1995 Ford E-350 Mini-Bus will
greatly reduce tour costs, lessen the band's overall carbon footprint and remove themselves from the global oil crisis. To promote their cause and raise funds, while educating their fans about sustainability,
UVH will launch a new line of organic, recycled clothing and other cool products throughout 2010. All profits from this new green line of clothing will go towards the purchase of the "Hippopota-bus" and
veggie-oil conversion. There will also be a donation jar, a limited edition poster and other sustainable 'Help Hippo Go Green' merchandise available, to support the band's new direction.
