THE WHIGS "IN THE DARK" OUT NOW!

Known for their enthralling live show, the Athens, GA trio The Whigs are currently on tour with Band Of Skulls and will make their Late Night with Jimmy Fallon debut April 27th. You can check out their recent appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman performing "Kill Me Carolyne," their raucous first single from their recently released album IN THE DARK. The song which brings a memorable strength to this exciting new collection, is now available for free download on the bands website and the video premieres today on Yahoo Music.
IN THE DARK is the follow up to the band’s two much-admired albums – GIVE ‘EM ALL A BIG FAT LIP and MISSION CONTROL. With each release, The Whigs have won over fans and critics with their pedal-to-the-metal power earning them universal praise as one of America’s finest young rock ‘n’ roll bands. Filter Magazine hailed for “artfully combining the disenchanted swagger of ‘70s punk with the infectious, catchy bounce of ‘60s pop” and Maxim Magazine simply called “riff-tastic.”
Spending much of 2008 and 2009 on the road, The Whigs have completed several tours with Kings Of Leon, The Kooks, Drive By-Truckers and others, have performed at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Fuji Rock and T in The Park, among other festivals and worldwide stops and have performed on The Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
Developed through years of non-stop touring and two critically acclaimed albums, IN THE DARK, with its impressive range and undeniable vigor, sees The Whigs doing what all-great bands do – furthering their artistic scope with each successive effort.

Amelia's Mechanics Announces Plans for New Album + Tour Dates

Amelia's Mechanics is fronted by Greensboro, NC singer-songwriter's Molly McGinn and Molly Miller and backed by a talented group of musicians out of Nashville, TN. Despite what the oil-and-iron name might suggest, the women of Amelia's Mechanics swap that toughness for a more urban, sophisticated take on Americana music, using luxuriating harmonies and classical swells to temper their lyrical frustrations with love and life. The instrumentation and vocal harmonies of Amelia's Mechanics result in a genre-busting sound best described as "vintage country with a moonshine concerto."
The band released their debut album "North, South," produced by Jim Avett (father, The Avett Brothers,) in February of 2010 to critical acclaim and embarked on an inaugural tour pleasing audiences from Florida to West Virginia. Select performances in May will feature support from guitarist Daryl Hance (guitarist, J.J. Grey & Mofro.)
Amelia's Mechanics will begin recording a follow-up album this summer in Asheville, NC at the wonderful Echo Mountain Studios (Smashing Pumpkins, The Avett Brothers, Band of Horses) with three-time Grammy-winner Steven Heller (producer, David Holt's Stellaluna, Doc Watson's Legacy) and fellow Greensboro, NC singer-songwriter Laurelyn Dossett (songwriter, Ana Lee) at the helm. A release date has not been set for the new album.

2010 Gathering of the Vibes Music, Camping and Arts Festival - Inital Lineup

Gathering of the Vibes 2010 marks the third installment of a five-year contract with the city of Bridgeport to host the annual music, arts and camping festival at Seaside Park through summer 2012. After drawing 20,000 revelers per day to the 370-acre venue last year, the city and festival organizers look to spread more positive Vibes in 2010.  This all-ages, family-friendly event will be held from July 29 to August 1. The festival caters to both weekend campers and single-day guests; both will have access to the park, including its shaded groves, manicured fields and more than a mile of Long Island Sound beachfront.

The initial 2010 lineup includes the reunion of LES CLAYPOOL’S PRIMUS, reggae legend and 2010 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inductee JIMMY CLIFF, Grateful Dead’s MICKEY HART and BILL KREUTZMANN’S RHYTHM DEVILS featuring KELLER WILLIAMS, reggae sensation DAMIAN MARLEY with special guest hip-hop icon NAS, pedal steel guitar master ROBERT RANDOLPH & THE FAMILY BAND, New Orleans funk outfit GALACTIC, and many, many more!

Other confirmed artists include Steve Kimock Crazy Engine; Umphrey’s McGee; Beastie Boys’ DJ “Mix Master Mike”; Jackie Greene Band; Little Feat; Martin Sexton featuring The Ryan Montbleau Band; New Riders of the Purple Sage; Donna Jean Godchaux; Dark Star Orchestra; Zach Deputy; Big Sam’s Funky Nation; and Max Creek. The Sunday-night headliner and Green Vibes Stage artist announcements are forthcoming.

Since its inception, Gathering of the Vibes and its fans have made “giving back” a priority through their  support of numerous social causes. In 2008 and 2009 combined festival organizers have donated more than $125,000 to local Bridgeport charities, the Connecticut Special Olympics and many other worthy not-for-profit organizations. In 2009, festival attendees donated 5,500 pounds of non-perishable items to local and state food banks. The festival’s bold “Green Vibes” environmental initiative ranges from an aggressive on-site recycling campaign to educating fans on the current research and development being done, and the progress being made in the field of alternative energy.

Gathering of the Vibes began in 1996 as a celebration of the life of Jerry Garcia, who passed away the previous summer.  Initially named “Deadhead Heaven”, the festival provides an annual forum for fans from across the country to remember the countercultural icon.  In each of its past fourteen years, Gathering of the Vibes has paired legendary artists with emerging acts to appeal to a wide cross-section of live-music fans.

The band performs an eclectic array of composed and improvised original material, dancing between genres of funk, jazz, electronica, reggae, bluegrass, and progressive rock.

The Winter 2010 Tour is just the beginning of an ambitious list of new initiatives, long-term goals, and a commitment to responsible touring for UVH this year. After signing with Simon Says Booking Agency and
playing the Rothbury Pre-Party with EOTO in 2009, UV HIPPO is ready for a full plate. In addition to releasing their third full length studio album later in 2010, the band plans on touring both coasts and
everywhere they can in between, including stops on the national festival circuit.

A significant part of the 200-show agenda ULTRAVIOLET HIPPOPOTAMUS has planned for 2010, will be promoting green principles and sustainable touring. An important step in making this goal a reality
is investing in a used diesel shuttle bus and converting the bus to run on veggie oil, obtained through the discarded oil from FastFood joints! Coined, the "Hippopota-bus", this 1995 Ford E-350 Mini-Bus will
greatly reduce tour costs, lessen the band's overall carbon footprint and remove themselves from the global oil crisis. To promote their cause and raise funds, while educating their fans about sustainability,
UVH will launch a new line of organic, recycled clothing and other cool products throughout 2010. All profits from this new green line of clothing will go towards the purchase of the "Hippopota-bus" and
veggie-oil conversion. There will also be a donation jar, a limited edition poster and other sustainable 'Help Hippo Go Green' merchandise available, to support the band's new direction.

Gratefulfest: Nelson Ledges Quarry Park Ohio

I had long been hearing about both the beauty of Nelson Ledges Quarry Park, a place that I had been meaning to go for years, and the great new band that Klyph Black had formed called Rumor Has It.  So it was with great anticipation that I wander over on Saturday afternoon of Gratefulfest weekend to see the band, at the main stage located just steps from a huge lake, and within the shady shadows cast by the trees that are all over this beautiful festival location.

rumor-has-itNow this festival was a lot of fun, but the music was mostly derivative.  Being Gratefulfest, and hosted by Dark Star Orchestra who played three nights as the headliner, many of the bands were very Dead inspired.  Not that I don’t love that, I do- I personally saw 69 Dead shows, a handful of Garcia solo stuff, and miss Jerry like the rest of us.  But I also like a band that can instead of copying what the Dead did, do something on their own and original.  Rumor Has It manages to achieve that in spades!

I knew to expect that the band is a six piece band, and that they were relatively new.  I know that they had a handful of gigs in the Northeast, but this was by far the biggest appearance for them.  But the musicians themselves have a lifetime of experience on stage and it showed.  I wasn’t expecting, however, to see them immediately take the stage as an eight piece band.  Former Zen Trickster Rob Barraco took the chair at the Hammond B3 Organ from the first notes of the set, joining his former Tricksters' bandmates Klyph Black, Tom Circosta, and Dave DiamondBarraco’s current bandmate, Rob Koritz, sat in the entire show also on percussion.

While Black is known primarily as a bassist with the Tricksters, and also his new band the Jam Stampede, he is playing rhythm, lead, and slide guitar with this band.  I had heard that he had the chops and knew that he did a stint as axe man for a few shows for Michele Shocked some years ago.  Tom Circosta takes his customary position as rhythm guitarist and added some tasty leads to this band, more than he did in his past roles.  Of course Dave Diamond is rock solid on the drums.

They were joined onstage by their regular band members John Sparrow on guitar and harp, and Arno Hecht on saxophone.  Sparrow sometimes pairs with Black on acoustic gigs and they have a duo called Black and Sparrow (no kidding..)  And Hecht is a well known saxophone player who apparently has done turns with everyone, including being the sax player on the Rolling Stones Steel Wheels tour, and as a touring member of the J Geils Band.  Quite a resume.

The band kicked in immediately, and had a professional and tight sound that I didn’t expect from a band that hasn’t been together but a few months.  And they are a bit hard to classify.  They are definitely not a jam band, and definitely not a blues band.  They passed solos around like a jazz band, shared vocal duties like many bands with multiple vocalists do, and mostly sounded like a really solid Rhythm Revue- more like what the Blues Brothers did in the movie than sounding like a blues band.

blackBlack in particular was amazing.  He clearly is the leader of the band, and doesn’t shy away from those responsibilities, but he is so warm and shares the spotlight so well, you hardly don’t view him as the leader in terms of ego or agenda.  The band fired through a variety of songs including some Tricksters tunes penned by Black (Hoodoo), some tasty classics (Grits and Grocery) and then eventually veered into Jerry-land (Tore Up.)

The band is really quite excellent.  I don’t know if I had slightly low expectations for some reason, but I find their polished sound, their musical signature, and the amazing talents of each band member to have come together in a way that I just didn’t expect.  Despite their previous appearances, this really seemed like the Grand Opening of the band, a true introduction to the festival scene that likely will continue at the Gathering of the Vibes where they are appearing soon.

The final 4 songs or so brought up special guest Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay.  Clearly comfortable sitting in with this band because of her relationship with the band members from their mutual stint in Donna Jean and the Tricksters, she contributed backing and lead vocals for the final four or five songs.  She was easily spied enjoying the first dozen songs of the set from the wings of the stage, and the mutual love that the band members all feel for each other was quite evident.  Much like seeing Phil and Friends, it is clear that the members of this band, eventually swelling in number to nine, have a mutual love and respect that can’t be faked.  I can’t wait to see the band again.  In addition to their upcoming Vibes appearance, they are playing at the Wormtown Music festival in September outside of Greenfield, MA.

Will the South Park Creators Get the Last Laugh?

South Park- for the Grateful Web

Well folks, looks like the latest fad amongst the erstwhile right wing in our fair country is to identify yourself as a "South Park Conservative."  Brian Anderson of the think tank, the Manhattan Institute, has published a book called "South Park Conservatives: The Revolt Against Liberal Media Bias" which has the normally buttoned-down conservatives coming out of the closet to rejoice in potty-mouthed irreligious humor that supposedly targets the Liberal Elite in its weekly broadcast.  Am I crazy or are these people just making another target out of themselves.  South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have always gone out of their way to skewer the self-serious and people like Michael Moore, Barbara Streisand and Alec Baldwin aren't exactly moving targets, but to suggest that the show has a conservative, or at least an anti-liberal bent is ludicrous.

Recently, Joe Scarborough, one of the usually more sensible and least vitriolic of the conservative talking heads on television, aired an interview with the author of the book, including some clips from the show to emphasize the point - which they have obviously completely missed:

SCARBOROUGH:  And actually making—you talk about environmentalism - actually making those people that were tearing down rain forests in South America the heroes of an episode.

ANDERSON:  That's right.

SCARBOROUGH:  Let's show another clip from "South Park."

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "SOUTH PARK")

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR:  You white Americans make me sick.  You waste food, oil, and everything else because you're so rich, and then you tell the rest of the world to save the rain forest because you like its pretty flowers.

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR:  We're here live in San Jose, Costa Rica, where hundreds of Americans have gathered for the Save the Rain Forest Summit.  Everyone is here so they can feel good about themselves and act like they aren't the ones responsible for the rain forest's peril.

In two lines of the show, Parker and Stone have gone after white Americans, wasteful consumption, rampant materialism and environmentalism.  Hey Conservatives, did you laugh at this?  How about you Liberals?  Of course you did, because it is funny and true.

It's embarrassing to hear right-minded individuals taking this for an attack on environmentalism and an endorsement of conservative values - to do so is to practically admit to being fat, greedy, wasteful and willing to let the world go to hell in a hand basket, everyone else be damned.

When Parker and Stone hold their mirror up to America, this is exactly what they see and what they are reflecting back to you.  Time and time again their message has been focused against the hypocrisy of the self-righteous in this country.  And that is neither Liberal nor Conservative.

If Vegas only took odds on the content of upcoming South Park episodes.  "South Park Conservatives" come to South Park and I can't wait to see what happens.

Now, coming up next, the cartoon "South Park" is often childish, irreverent and obscene.  But conservative?  You know what?  Stick around.  You're going to be surprised by what you hear right after this break.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "SOUTH PARK")

UNIDENTIFIED ACTRESS:  Hello there, little boy.  Do you know who I am?

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR:  No.

UNIDENTIFIED ACTRESS:  I bet you do.

(singing):  I'm going where there's lucky clovers in the...

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR:  Stop that.

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR:  Yes, that sucks, dude.

UNIDENTIFIED ACTRESS:  I'm Barbra Streisand.

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR:  So?

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR:  So?  So, I'm a very famous and very important individual.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

SCARBOROUGH:  A popular TV show skewering a liberal celebrity.  You know what?  That may have been unheard of 10 years ago.  But now, thanks to cable news, talk radio, blogs, this type of humor has blossomed onto cable.  The elite media regime has started to crack, some say.  And others say it's a watershed moment in American politics and culture.

That is at least what Brian Anderson, who is editor at "Manhattan Institute City Journal," has to say in his new book, "South Park Conservatives: The Revolt Against Liberal Media Bias."

I spoke with him recently and began by asking him, what is a "South Park" conservative?

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

BRIAN ANDERSON, AUTHOR, "SOUTH PARK CONSERVATIVES":  Well, the way I use the term—and it's been floating around out in the culture for a while—is somebody who looks around at today's left, who might not be a traditional conservative, but who looks at the political correctness, the anti-Americanism, the elitism, and says that's not me; I want nothing to do with that.

And I find a lot of evidence for this on college campuses in the book

and also in this new kind of comedy, which is represented most powerfully

by "South Park" itself.

SCARBOROUGH:  Now, a lot of conservatives would be shocked that you talk about "South Park" being a conservative show.  I didn't watch it for a couple of years.  A friend told me, you've got to watch this episode and showed me an episode.  And I have not yet seen anything on television that goes after the left the way "South Park" does.

Now, political correctness, of course—well, I'll tell you what.  Why don't we just show a clip of "South Park" to help define what "South Park" conservatives are.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "SOUTH PARK")

UNIDENTIFIED ACTRESS:  Kids, this is the Costa Rican Capitol Building.

This is where all the leaders of the Costa Rican government make their...

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR:  Oh, my God, it smells out here.

UNIDENTIFIED ACTRESS:  All right, that does it.  Eric Cartman, you respect other cultures this instant.

UNIDENTIFIED ACTRESS:  I wasn't saying anything about their culture.

I was just saying their city smells like ass.

UNIDENTIFIED ACTRESS:  Wow.  Staying in a place like this really makes you appreciate living in America, huh.

UNIDENTIFIED ACTRESS:  You may think that making fun of Third World countries is funny, but let me...

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR:  I don't think it's funny.  This place is overcrowded, smelly and poor.  That's not funny.  That sucks.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

SCARBOROUGH:  That's the sort of thing you never see on mainstream media.  They go after Barbra Streisand.  In their latest movie, "Team America," they actually assassinate every liberal in Hollywood.

(CROSSTALK)

ANDERSON:  Yes.  In Hollywood, basically.

SCARBOROUGH:  Yes, so...

ANDERSON:  In horrible ways.

SCARBOROUGH:  So, what's going on with this subversive new humor?

ANDERSON:  Well, first of all, when you think about the history of humor, the last 30 years, it's been mostly directed at conservatives and—you know, at least when it's been topical humor.

You think of Norman Lear and "All in the Family" and "Maude."  And, even today, "Will & Grace" or "Whoopi," which was canceled a few years ago, these—topic humor is always to the left.  These guys saw an opportunity.  And cable made it possible.  This is the kind of show that would have never, never been broadcast on network television.

SCARBOROUGH:  You know, what's so interesting is, I—when "The New York Times" ran a front-page story a year ago, they were actually talking about how this was a liberal show.  It was anti-God.  It was anti-religion, and the conservatives were angry.  You know, I just—I can't figure out how they got it so wrong.

ANDERSON:  Well, I mean, on occasion, they do go after the right.

They did a kind of merciless mocking of Mel Gibson.

And, you know, they're not equal-opportunity offenders, however.  If you really look at episode after episode, they go after multiculturalism, radical environmentalism, hate crime legislation, even abortion rights.

SCARBOROUGH:  Yes.

ANDERSON:  And when was the last time you saw anything in popular culture satirize something like that?

SCARBOROUGH:  And actually making—you talk about environmentalism -

·         actually making those people that were tearing down rain forests in South America the heroes of an episode.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

ANDERSON:  It's Comedy Central's most successful program.

And its demographic cuts pretty young.  And, as I explain in this book, "South Park Conservatives," there's a lot of this kind of activity going on, on campuses, too.

SCARBOROUGH:  Talk about that.

ANDERSON:  Well, Harvard's Institute of Politics did a study about a year and a half ago that found that students were actually to the right of the general population in most of their views.

SCARBOROUGH:  So, what happens is, they go to class all day.  They listen to professors.

ANDERSON:  They listen to...

(CROSSTALK)

SCARBOROUGH:  ... that all have the same opinion, same political correct viewpoint.  They get tired of it.  They go home at night.

ANDERSON:  Well, think about it.

SCARBOROUGH:  And they become "South Park" conservatives.

ANDERSON:  Yes.  Well, there's a gun club at Harvard now.  And that's pretty strange when you think about it.

SCARBOROUGH:  It's very strange.

Well, thanks.  The book is "South Park Conservatives."  Thanks a lot for being with us tonight.  We greatly appreciate it.

ANDERSON:  Thanks a lot, Joe.  I really appreciate it.  Thanks for having me on.
