Tom Russell Joined By Calexico, Lucinda Williams, Van Dyke Parks On Cinematic 'Mesabi'

The Mesabi iron range juts into Minnesota, a desolate deposit of minerals and the birthplace of Bob Dylan. American composer and storyteller Tom Russell says that Bob Dylan inspired him to become an artist, and his new 'Mesabi' pays moving tribute with compelling tales that connect the iron range to the border town of Juarez, Mexico and the myth of Hollywood celebrity with cinematic, global revelry. 'Mesabi,' out Sept 6 on Shout! Factory, is a vast, interwoven collection of tales set to twangy rock, country and Mexican folk and features Calexico, Van Dyke Parks and Lucinda Williams.

Co-produced by Russell and keyboardist Barry Walsh, and recorded in several different studios in Tucson, Texas, Nashville and Los Angeles, 'Mesabi' is the 26th album from an artist whose songs have been recorded by such icons as Johnny Cash, Dave Van Ronk, Jerry Jeff Walker, Doug Sahm and Ramblin' Jack Elliott, among others.

'Mesabi' is thematically ambitious, drawing inspiration from American icons like Dylan, Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean and the perilous town of Juarez, Mexico, close to where Tom lives. Says Tom, "The puzzle is that [Juarez is] the most dangerous city in the world and El Paso, just over the bridge, is the safest city in the United States."

Along with the release of 'Mesabi,' 2011 has much in store for Tom. Filmmaker Monte Hellman ('Two-Lane Blacktop') demanded that Tom's new songs be included in his new film 'Road To Nowhere;' a book of 60 of Tom's paintings will be released this fall on Bang Tail Press; a documentary about Tom's life, 'Don't Look Down,' will be released soon; and he will be touring the US in September and October.

Younger Brother Release Vaccine Today

Vaccine (released April 26, 2011/ SCI Fidelity Records) is the third album by genre-bending U.K. outfit Younger Brother. And while members Simon Posford, Benji Vaughan and Ruu Campbell remain royalty on the electronic music scene, (the album reached #2 on iTunes’ electronic music chart), Vaccine marks a notable evolution from the band's electronic origins, embracing melodic song structures and organic instrumental sounds. The result is turning heads, and ears

Check out a rare acoustic Younger Brother performance here.

Vaccine’s nine original songs incorporate elements of catchy uber-pop, early American folk and blues, and vintage prog-rock, with lyrics that balance pointed humor and weighty philosophical matters, giving the album a level of intimacy and emotion that's not normally associated with electronic music. The release continues Younger Brother's evolution from studio project to full-fledged, organic band, with Posford, Vaughan and Campbell joined by Marc Brownstein (Disco Biscuits) on bass, Tom Hamilton (Brothers Past) on guitar and Joe Russo (who also plays in the Grateful Dead spin-off act Furthur) on drums.

The U.S. release of Vaccine coincides with Simon Posford’s other current project: the highly anticipated “Shpongle presents The Shpongletron Experience.” For this massive run of Shpongle “Hybrid” DJ dates, Posford reveals his brand-new "Decks, FX & 101" show made up of an arsenal of turntables, synths, and effects units. The elaborately staged multi-media presentation, which Posford describes as a "maelstrom of beauty and surprise," will raise the bar on Shpongle's longstanding reputation for providing mind-bending, fully immersive multi-dimensional, multi-sensory experiences.

The Attack Cover The Kinks' "Father Christmas"

Hey Scrooges, Grinches and Heat Misers, you don't have to be so pissed off at Christmas anymore. Orlando street-punk heroes The Attack have just released their rendition of The Kinks' classic Christmas tune "Father Christmas." You won't get stockings hung with care or sugar plum faries, it's more like machine guns, unemployment, and youth mobs runamuck through this Dark Christmas Anthem.

"We've always wanted to record this song and finally had an opportunity to do it, and releasing it this year seems appropriate." recalls The Attack's guitarist Brad Palkevich. "The songs content relfects a recession stricken England years ago, not too different from economic crisis going on all over the world today."

The new single was recorded during a quick trip into the studio to record a collaboration track for MC Lars' upcoming album, with help from producer Jami Roebuck in Orlando, and mixed by Tom Petta (Bigwig) at Bivouac Studios in New Jersey.

After a busy year supporting the release of their first album Of Nostalgia and Rebellion, The Attack are playing a handful of Southeast dates to round out the year before completing their next 7" due out Spring 2011.

The Attack Live!
December 4th @ The Firestone Orlando, FL w/ The Misfits
December 21st @ The Back Booth Orlando, FL w/ Go Rydel and How Dare You
January 7th @ The Social Orlando, FL w/ H2O, Comeback Kid, Casey Jones

The Mynabirds Toast the Holidays with X-Mas Single

Today the Mynabirds release a limited edition 7" on Saddle Creek that features "All I Want is Truth (for Christmas)", an original (anti-) Christmas song, and a cover of the Zombies' "This Will Be Our Year" on the B-side. The first 200 copies from Saddle Creek's online store will be offered on white vinyl. A black vinyl version of the 7" is available at retail outlets, and all records include a free digital download. The songs are also available at all digital outlets. If you haven’t checked it out at Brightest Young Things, a free mp3 of "All I Want is Truth (for Christmas)" is available now via Saddle Creek by clicking HERE.

With charming chords descending the wurltizer keys like falling snow, the Mynabirds' "All I Want" starts out like a typical Christmas song. But by the second line, it's clear that this is singer-songwriter Laura Burhenn's cry for anything but another ordinary holiday. "All I Want" navigates global warming, messy politics, endless wars, and American consumerism, and brushes it all away to remind us of the snow-white core of the holidays: love. "Have yourself a happy little New Year," Burhenn sings, "'Cause the politicians will be at their same old arguments: Should we start another war or should we raise another tax?" Burhenn declares that she's opting out of society's endless back and forth to "sit down with [her] love and…remember what it means to celebrate without a single store-bought thing." Like a mug of hot cocoa served with a dash of John Lennon's "Gimme Some Truth", "All I Want" goes down like an old standard in a whole new era.

"This Will Be Our Year" is the perfect song to close out a year of haunts and minor catastrophes to look to something new. The slide of J. Tom Hnatow's pedal steel colors the Mynabirds' version of this Zombies' classic as a sweet, country-tinged take on the original. Both "All I Want" and "Our Year" were recorded to tape in a single day at Inner Ear in Arlington, Virginia with producers Chad Clark and TJ Lipple at the helm. A host of DC friends joined in, including the Roofwalkers' Elmer Sharp (drums), Ben Licciardi (backing vocals), and Raj Gadhia (bass and vocals); These United States' J. Tom Hnatow (pedal steel); and Winston Yu (strings).

What We Gained in the Fire - Video

Also out now is a new video for "What We Gained in the Fire", the opening track from the Mynabirds' debut album. The video premiered on Friday at AOL Spinner. Director Rob Walters layers new Super 8 footage of singer-songwriter Laura Burhenn traversing a snowy landscape with vintage footage of her own family's home movies that span three generations. Stretching from the 1940's to present day, the viewer gets a window into a family story, watching clips of young love blossom, of babies growing into men, piecing together what might really be going on behind the nuclear family facade.

Vincent Minor Live in NYC This Thursday, Debut AlbumOut Today!

Vincent Minor’s self-titled debut album is out today Social Science Recordings! In celebration, he is playing Piano’s in NYC this Thursday 9/23. Tom Brosseau Announces U.S. Tour Dates

Right on the heels of Tom Brosseau's European tour with PJ Harvey and John Parish, as well as playing select dates with Mice Parade, Brosseau is announcing a U.S. tour in support of his June 23rd FatCat release, Posthumous Success. This new buoyant and well-crafted album is a huge stylistic shift away from the spare acoustic arrangements of his previous releases though Brosseau's earnest wit and captivating, vibrato-soaked voice is unchanged. These songs - and selections from Brosseau's catalog - will be fully realized live by the trio of Brosseau, album co-producer and multi-instrumentalist Ethan Rose, and vocalist/instrumentalist Shelley Short. The ensemble will bring Brosseau's live sound closer to the full-band richness captured on Posthumous Success than previous solo outings. All tour dates are listed below.

Additionally, we are giving out a free mp3 of "You Don't Know My Friends" off of this new album. Download/listen to the song here:

Tom Constanten & Zen Tricksters Together For Fillmore 40th

LiveDead- for the Grateful Web

In celebration of the return of the Dead, the historic 3/2/69 Fillmore West show will be brought back to life by The Zen Tricksters on 3/2/09 at Mexicali Live in Teaneck, NJ to give all who missed it an opportunity to experience it live. The Zen Tricksters, New York-based jamband who Phil Lesh termed as "brilliant players" (Jeff Mattson, Klyph Black, Tom Circosta, and Dave Diamond) will be joined by special guest Tom Constanten, Grateful Dead pianist who performed at the original show, and former Zen Tricksters drummer, Joe Chirco, to fill out the second drummer position. 3/2/69 was the last of a four-day run at the Fillmore, and some of the material from that show was included in the classic Grateful Dead album "Live Dead." The entire
run of these shows was released in 2005 by Rhino Records in a limited edition boxed set, and sold out immediately.

"In 1969, at the height of the Grateful Dead's rise from the San Francisco ballroom scene, the band recorded a live album over four nights at the Fillmore West, "Live/Dead," that's considered not only one of the band's best, but one of the best live albums ever made." Joel Selvin - SF Chronicle
