Umphrey's McGee Announces Full Summer Schedule

On the heels of big plays in Amsterdam and Australia, and still buzzing from the ground-breaking first annual UMBowl in Chicago, pop prog rockers Umphrey's McGee today unveil their complete summer 2010 tour schedule.

The band’s summer plans include stops at festivals throughout the country: Bonnaroo, Summer Camp, Wakarusa, Summerfest, and All Good, among others. Additional tour highlights include a highly anticipated Colorado visit - for a July 3 “Red Rocks & Blue” show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre with Galactic (w/ Cyril Neville) and The Wailers and an intimate play on the 4th of July at the Gothic Theatre, and an opening stint for Widespread Panic on July 13 at LC Outdoor Amphitheater in Columbus, OH. Umphrey’s McGee’s complete summer tour schedule is included below.

The always forward-thinking Umphrey’s McGee recently carved out new terrain in musical interactivity with fans, when they hosted the first annual “UMBowl” - an unprecedented 4-quarter evening-long concert at Lincoln Hall in the group’s hometown of Chicago. For the April 24th event, fans determined the show’s entire set list via real time text messaging and pre-show balloting. Complete with (quite funny) ESPN style videos in between quarters, UMBowl football jersey-styled t-shirts, and “overtime”, the venue roared with the energy of an NFL Playoff game. Each quarter offered a unique approach to fan interaction – such as an acoustic “1st quarter” with songs determined by pre-show balloting, and a wholly improvised 2nd quarter performance driven by real time texting from the fans to the soundboard, where it was reviewed and delivered to the band (and the crowd) by “offensive coordinator/sound caresser” Kevin Browning. A Blogritics.org review hailed UMBowl as “…challenging, fan-centric and courageous.”

Umphrey’s McGee also recently released their song "1348" on the Rock Band Network. This marks the first time Umphrey’s McGee’s music has been part of any video game, and the progressive-rock influenced music proves to be a great fit. For “1348” Umphrey’s McGee worked with former Harmonix Music Systems employee and current Rock Band Network freelancer Andrew Buch. In addition to “1348”, Buch is helping to prepare several Umphrey’s McGee songs for the program that will be made available soon.

Dierks Bentley Takes The Tonight Show "Up On The Ridge"

Award winning singer/songwriter Dierks Bentley will debut the lead and title track from his forthcoming bluegrass-influenced album UP ON THE RIDGE on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, tonight,  Tues., April 27.  The track, written by Bentley and Angelo Petraglia, features Petraglia on acoustic guitar, Sam Bush on slide mandolin and background vocals by Alison Krauss.

“This is the most fun I’ve ever had making music,” says Bentley.  “The songs, the production, the collaborations...everything came together so organically and naturally...it’s been a blast.   Now, we’ve got tv offers and a tour...I feel the same excitement and nervousness I felt when we were getting ready to release my first album 6 years ago!”

As anticipation builds for the artistically-daring collection, music critics are stirring with a first taste of the June 8, 2010 release.  CMT’s Chet Flippo predicts it will be a “career landmark” for Bentley, and MusicRow magazine is already calling it “the first masterpiece country album of 2010.”

Bentley kicked off his UP ON THE RIDGE tour of 24 shows in 30 days this past weekend with sold out crowds in Portland, OR; Boulder, CO; Colorado Springs, CO; and Austin, TX.  He continues on through May 22 with a final show at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium.  For a full list of appearances and tour dates, as well as more info on the upcoming album, visit here.

Adam Green: Debut Art Exhibition 'Teen Tech' At New York's Morrison Hotel

Folk-rock troubadour Adam Green's debut art show, Teen Tech, will open at the Morrison Hotel Gallery Bowery (313 Bowery, former home to the famed CBGB's gallery) in his hometown of New York, NY, on April 22nd. Following a private opening night party, the exhibition will be available to the public April 23rd and 24th. Teen Tech showcases another artistic side of singer/songwriter Green, already known for his prolific (six albums in eight years) career as a solo musician and for his work as half of the band Moldy Peaches. Last year, he composed the soundtrack for a German theatrical adaptation of Paul Auster's novel Timbuktu, which he titled Musik For A Play. Fat Possum Records released Green's most recent solo album, Minor Love, in February.

The exhibition will consist of original works by Green: 12 sculptures of plaster, papier-mâché, or papier-mâché and mixed materials; 18 large-scale (30" x 40") acrylic or watercolor paintings; 19 drawings; and 20 collages (created together with model Cory Kennedy). The art will be for sale and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the charitable organization Artists for Peace and Justice, which directs 100% of all funds raised towards rebuilding and maintaining long-term sustainability in Haiti. Friend and peer Binki Shapiro of Little Joy introduced Green to the organization when he donated a hand-designed t-shirt for her recent, highly successful Crafts For A Cause online auction that donated all proceeds to Artists for Peace and Justice. Green and Shapiro decided to work together again here in an effort to continue giving. Following the show's close, any remaining pieces will be available here.

Green says of the exhibition, "Teen Tech is an art show I've prepared over the last year and a half. Perhaps because I'm an entertainer in showbiz, I found myself trying to make this art show more entertaining than average. It focuses on cartoon subjects. I don't often read comics but I've always liked to draw cartoons. I contend that all artists work in caricature. The pieces in Teen Tech are caricatures of cartoons, which I feel distill the subjects down to their bare essence."

Teen Tech coincides with Green's two-night, hometown headlining stand at the Bowery Ballroom. These two gigs, April 23rd and 24th, will be the final of his current U.S. tour in support of Minor Love. The album has earned Green plenty of praise, with BlackBook writing, "...the real genius of Minor Love isn't the album's embrace of disparate genres (although that's impressive, too), it's how charming and easy Green makes all this variety sound" and Filter adding, "...Green revels in a stripped-down, bittersweet world where nothing lasts forever, with both his baritone and lyrics adding freshness to his fatalist outlook." Remaining tour dates are below.

Statewide Emergency @ The Fox Theatre

Statewide Emergency is a rock and roll quartet that plays honest original music with complex melodies and quality musicianship. Although much of the vocals and guitar are rooted in blues and alternative music (The Black Keys, Queens of the Stone Age), the rhythm section is inspired by more straight ahead rock bands such as Led Zeppelin and The Dead Weather leaving more intrigue than doubt about what genre the band plays. One music writer described it as “balls-to-the-wall rock laced with blues and an alternative touch.”

RE:CREATION - Two nights with Twisted Records!

Dongle and Mongle are the only two other words rhyming with Shpongle...a strange hybrid of electronic manipulation and shamanic midgets with frozen digits squeezing the envelope and crawling through the doors of perception, find a new pair of dice...extra numbers and colours an infinite expanding bubble, filled with a bizzare, strange world of dripping halucinatory wallpaper, a garden of earthly delights...........Shpongleland.....a place of well being, and reflective surfaces, morphing like an Anacondas skin and shimmering like a million colour changing squid, at fifty fathoms.. truly unfathomable like seperating water from it's wetness, the Ineffable Mysteries unweave.

Africa in the Americas Through a Southern Band

"Boulder, CO, Fox Theatre. Giant Panda at 9. JBB at 10. TK at 11:30. Bring your dancing attire, dr." Not the most clear posting on Twitter, perhaps, but for fans of Toubab Krewe--the "TK" in the tweet--the message was rather plain. Thursday's show was going to be one with jams so moving, you had better come ready to dance. And they were right.

They Might Be Giants Spring/ Summer Festival Update

After a hugely successful run earlier this year, They Might Be Giants will play several dates over the spring and summer of 2010, including two benefit shows in the Boston area. The two shows at the Regent Theatre in Arlington, MA will be aimed at kids and proceeds from the show will benefit Boston By Foot (www.bostonbyfoot.org). The band has played a series of successful kids’ shows in support of Here Comes Science, their acclaimed 2009 release.

The upcoming dates will also include several family shows across the country, as well as festival stops at Boston’s WXRV Earth Day Celebration (free show!), the Sasquatch Festival in George, Washington, and Manchester, Tennessee’s Bonnaroo Festival.

Released in September 2009, Here Comes Science has received praise across the board for its unique and exciting fusion of rock, education and humor. Boing Boing described the album as “top-notch pop music with humor that's aimed at both kids and adults” and called the album “better than great. Perfect.”

THE 40th ANNIVERSARY of the Grateful Dead at HARPUR COLLEGE

1970's intense. T.C. leaves the band in late January. The band's 'busted down on Bourbon Street' on January 31st. In March they discover their manager, Mickey Hart's father Lenny, has been stealing them blind (they're already hugely in debt to the record company). Only the music is sane; they enter the studio in March and in three weeks record Workingman's Dead, fulfilling Garcia and Hunter's work of the past year. It comes out in June. They add a regular opening act, the New Riders of the Purple Sage (Garcia plays pedal steel in it), and their shows stretch ever longer. Late that month they cross Canada on the Festival Express. In September they have some spare time, and go back into the studio, producing another gem, American Beauty. In the fall they begin a long series of college concerts that will establish them (along with the two albums) in a long-term way as a touring band.

“Finally I have the quality I’ve been looking for on this famous date. There are so many outrageous things that stand out on this date, that I hesitate to list them all. There are a few places where the quality “garbles” of fades in & out, during the “Anthem” & “Viola Lee Blues”, but outside of this everything is excellent. In “Cold Rain & Snow”, Garcia tunes up several times & really gets into singing with gusto, like I’ve never heard this tune. There is a really nice riff from “Dark Star” that they do during the end of “Dancing in the Streets”. During the Acoustic Set, there is one point where Garcia & Weir lecture the noisy audience about being a more “respectable audience.”
