BoomBox Cancels Eureka show due to death in family

Due to a passing of a family member, BoomBox has regretfully canceled their set for tonight’s show at the Nocturnum, in Eureka, CA to briefly return home to attend a funeral and spend time with family. However, because of the overwhelming support the group has received on the West Coast, performances in San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego will remain scheduled as planned.

Godchaux explains, “I want to thank everyone for the support on this West Coast run. We are really honored to share what we all share together at shows.” He continues, “My family’s encouragement and your support led us to the decision to return back to California on Thursday (October 8th) to perform in San Francisco and finish the remainder of the tour.”

Fans planning on attending the show in Eureka will still be treated to a night of music from Ana Sia who has been touring with BoomBox on this West Coast tour and are encouraged to make the trip to San Francisco to see BoomBox perform on Thursday, October 8th at the Independent.

The band thanks everyone for their support and kind thoughts.

YAMN Headlining Show at Mishawaka

In quick fashion, YAMN has taken their vision of the live electronic genre to new heights and they plan to unveil their latest live installment at the famed Mishawaka Amphitheatre on June 19 as the headlining act. Fresh off a momentous performance at the Summer Camp Festival in Illinois, the four-piece is antsy to get back in front of their Colorado allegiance with one of their biggest shows to date.

YAMNBorn of Breckenridge, CO, in 2007, YAMN has been re-arranging the live electronic genre to fit their good-natured mountain spirit since day one. Once dubbed by a writer as “progressive-electro-trance-fusion with Colorado Jam Rock enthusiasm,” it’s quite difficult to fit this band into a box that needs to be labeled. They are explorers of not just sound, but sight and creativity, leading fans through a chase of sonic themes and into a night of dancing.

Brian Hamilton leads the charge on guitars and vocals, executing timely riffs with enthusiastic vocals, a good portion of which capture the essence of mountain life. All of the guys pitch in on vocals, creating a chorus that layers well the rhythm section made up of bassist David Duart and drummer Adam Ebensberger. Ryan Ebarb’s work on the keyboards and guitar is often gritty, yet at times as eloquent as the elite of organists. Ebensberger and Duart are the wheels of a sound that seems to capture a road trip, with the other half steering via calling melodies that hint at bluegrass, funk and everything else on the list of genre. Not to be forgotten is the fifth member of the band: a stage show and lighting rig that will intoxicate the eyes.

YAMN is not following in the footsteps of other live electronic bands, but carving out there own niche. For two years Colorado has been dancing away nights to their grooves, and with more shows to be announced in-state through June, fans will be eager to travel as the band lands itself on concert bills in other states.

Pretty Lights Pen Red Rocks Show with STS9

lightsPretty Lights will join STS9 on Saturday, July 25th at Red Rocks in a triumphant return to Denver, after blowing out box offices across the country for the first few months of 2009. Three sellout shows in Fort Collins, Boulder, and Denver in February sent the innovative electronic act off onto the road for a headlining tour through the Southeastern U.S. with huge momentum. They sold out every show on the tour including the famous Georgia Theatre in Athens, before the doors even opened. With at least 13 more scheduled shows between now and their return to Colorado, Pretty Lights will be pumping out of speakers from coast to coast, wrecking the standard of electronic music.

Pretty Lights is the musical vision of the ultra-versatile Colorado based producer, Derek Vincent Smith, accompanied in the live setting by drummer, Cory Eberhard. Together these two achieve a raw energy rarely reached in the realm of electronic music. At a time when music lovers from almost all subcultures and genres are finding common ground in the basic form of bangin' beats, Pretty Lights is giving the people what they want: electro organic, cutting-edge party rocking beats that fill venues with energy and emotion and send dance floors into frenzies. What makes Pretty Lights truly different though, is that the beats carry serious soul.

As momentum for Pretty Lights builds, so does the anticipation for the act’s return to its Colorado roots, where many fans were left outside the door wishing they had bought tickets sooner for their last three-night Colorado run. Fans across all genres are coming together to fuel the Pretty Lights movement. One only need to download Filling up the City Skies, the free double disc that was released for download only a few short months ago at www.prettylightsmusic.com, to see what the hype is about.

Filling Up The City Skies is a two disc, 26 track journey through past, present, and future. Smith juxtaposes collages of beautiful vintage samples against backdrops of futuristic synthesis and dirty broken beats, creating a sound that can snap your neck while simultaneously shedding your tears. The album has been downloaded over 50,000 times from the Pretty Lights website in the short 4 months since its release, proving that the PL sound is not only getting around, it's spreading like a virus.

What makes the next Denver show all the more intriguing is that, somehow, amidst the relentless touring, Smith is nearing completion of the next Pretty Lights album. Scores of unheard new material is sure to be dropped at Red Rocks on July 25th, considering a quote direct from Smith’s own blog, “Maintaining productivity, and striving to constantly create fresh new music is the only way to keep this adventure exciting for myself…I couldn’t bear to tour an the same record for more than a few months…”

Pretty Lights will be continuing to make its name on the festival circuit this summer which will include appearances at Bonnaroo, 10k Lakes, Rothbury, High Sierra, Wakarusa, and Camp Bisco.

New Year's Eve Show Marcus Goldhaber W/The Jon Davis Trio

Catch Marcus with the Jon Davis Trio on NYE- for the Grateful Web

When Marcus was growing up, every night after dinner his mother would call him over to the piano to teach him a new song. She had no great plan to train him professionally, she only wanted him to know this music and have it a part of his life. She would always say, "This is a great one for you to know."

At age 14, he quickly realized that this was not a common practice in the homes of his friends. So needless to say, he listened to a wide range of music that included Robert Smith, Jim Morrison, Sarah Vaughn, Elton John, Claude Debussy, Eddie Vedder, and Chet Baker, but at night he'd always go right back to the piano with his mom after dinner; quite the balance for a suburban kid in Buffalo, NY.

This was not a chore, but rather a treat – a chance to get another piece of a genre in which he always wished he'd been born. Instead, born in 1978, Marcus fell in love with this music through the influence of his grandparents, Ernest and Martha Blaustein and, of course, through these after dinner sessions with his mom. When his grandparents were alive, these two were grace, class and chivalry incarnate and to Marcus, this was all written and brought to life in the music of their time.

Today, he is right at home in this genre interpreting the songs of Dorothy Fields, Sammy Cahn, Harold Arlen, Jimmy Van Heusen, Sammy Fain, and so many others. Marcus is a perfect blend of yesterday and today. With a modern approach that stays true to the style of this music, he hopes to help bring these great tunes back so that young people can grow up knowing this music as he did and then pass it on to their children, maybe after dinner at the piano.

Gratefulfest 9 - A Weekend to Remember

DSO wants to thank all of you who made it out and were a part of another wonderful weekend of Gratefulfest out at Nelson's Ledges. Dan Healy naturally killed it on the mixing board, using the Meyer line-array rig that he practically invented and we were honored to have our friends, Donna-Jean and Keller Williams sit in with us. Additionally, we continued the tradition of supporting Rett Syndrome research by raising $2500 through GratefulFest supporters; that brings the total since 2003 to over $15,000!! DSO would like to offer a special thanks to everyone who contributed to this special cause and especially to Julie Fultz and Erika Seth for running the raffle booth. So, what a fantastic weekend - thanks again for coming out and sharing it with us!

"Like a Tumbleweed" Tour Kicks Off

The summer is almost over but things are still heating up on the road for Dark Star Orchestra. Starting this month, the band will be heading out west -starting the tour in Kansas City then running through Tulsa, Austin, Dallas, San Diego, 3 nights at the Fillmore in San Francisco and all points in between. We are honored to have him "on the bus" and hope you can join us for this special run of shows. The tour will also include another exciting Black Tie Die Ball at the Henry Fonda Theater in Los Angeles on September 27. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Rex Foundation, celebrating its 25th anniversary! Come by early and hang with DSO at the pre-show reception; we hope to see you there!

Seeing DSO at The Fillmore? Take Home Some Grateful Dead History

Yard Dogs Road Show Descend Upon Denver Oct. 4th

photos by Amanda Bell- for the Grateful Web

The Yard Dogs Road Show most recently left ROTHBURY and Glastonbury Festival audiences breathless. Yard Dogs Road Show will release their first music video EVER on their website in the next two weeks. It's called Lucky Day and it's an in-depth documentation of their last ten years on the road - from inception to the present - all about sprinklers, swimsuits and summer fun.  Shot by Dugan O'neal (Michael Franti, Bassnectar, M.I.A.). Now, San Francisco's hobo cabaret bring their living patchwork of vaudeville and rock and roll indoors for a headlining U.S. tour.

The run of shows launches on September 6 with a hometown show at San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium. Complete with red carnations for all of the ladies in attendance, Beats Antique opens the show, while Shellac Shack spins vintage 78s in the venue's "Poster Room."  After SF, the troupe heads east for a string of dates with support act The Indigo Belly Dance, featuring Rachel Brice, Mardi Love and Zoe Jake are all members of Miles Copeland's internationally acclaimed Bellydance Superstars.

Of course, it wouldn't be a fall tour for Yard Dogs Road Show without a stop in Denver, where on October 4 they return to the Mile High City - this time at the Bluebird Theatre - for the first time since last year's epic Halloween bash with Devotchka.

Yard Dogs Road Show Fall Dates are as follows:

Yard Dogs Road Show are pure visual and sonic voodoo. It's a true story on stage: sword swallowers, dancing dolls, fire eaters and sunset hobo poetry - all animated by the live sounds of the Yard Dogs cartoon heavy band. Born from the saloon vaudeville that toured the Wild West in the late 1800's and slammed into the underworld of modern American road culture. The Yard Dogs create a timeless space for the union of ancient theatrical alchemy and modern pop culture.

With the publication of his book, Hobo: A Young Man's Thoughts on Trains and Tramping in America (Random House / 2003), straw boss and founding member Eddy Joe Cotton and the Yard Dogs Road Show surfaced into the mainstream media. As the San Francisco Weekly reviewed, "Many wandering youngsters identify with the label "tramp artist," but few have taken it to the top-hat perfection quite like Eddy Joe Cotton...[Eddy] and the Yard Dogs Road Show do their neo-vaudeville thing the only way it should be: with flash, panache and an underlying sense of menace."
