Suzanna Choffel To Release New Album, 'Steady Eye Shaky Bow,' May 24

Suzanna Choffel, whose dusky vocals are as intriguing as her indie-soul-pop originals and sultry stage presence, releases on Tuesday, May 24, her latest album, STEADY EYE SHAKY BOW, a collection of upbeat melodies and ballads that Choffel describes as “blues-colored dark grit” drawing from musical influences that include Stax-style jazz and Motown R&B.

Choffel and her band — Kyle Thompson on drums, Johnny Vogelsang on bass, Laura Scarborough on vibraphone and synthesizer, and Chris Gebhard on keys and guitar —will make numerous special appearances around the new release. The band recently performed at SXSW Music Festival, including a show at Auditorium Shores with Blue October.

Around the release of STEADY EYE SHAKY BOW, Choffel will tour in Texas in May and June, including an Album Release Show in Austin. The album has already yielded “Raincloud,” with its smart, witty lyrics and soulful syncopated sound that is more than pop, the song infused with the flavor of New Orleans with the backing by Big Sam’s Funky Nation, and a video viewed on YouTube more than half a million times.
Another song on the new album is “Archer,” from whence the album’s title comes, a song that exemplifies Choffel’s unique lyrical expression of the emotions inherent in relationships.
Multiple award-winner Choffel was named Indie Artist of the Year at the 2009 Austin Music Awards and won top honors in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest.

Amy Black Announces iPod Giveaway Contest

Singer/songwriter Amy Black released her sophomore album entitled One Time this spring and has been on the road supporting the record.  For fans who have not had a chance to catch one of her electric performances, Amy has release videos from her CD release show at Club Passim in Boston's Harvard Square.

In the album’s potent title track, "One Time," the plaintive lyric “Time for you to make a break/And show what you’re good for” could describe Black’s new release and her live performances. “I decided a few years back that it was now or never,” says Black. “I love music way too much to sit on the side lines. You only get one chance at this life, and I’m taking mine.”

"One Time" is the first single off the album and Amy rocked it at the release show. Fans who share the video with their friends will be entered in the "iPod 'One Time' Music Collection" Contest. The winner will receive a new Apple iPod Touch loaded with Amy Black’s music catalog and videos from the "One Time" CD Release Show.

In order to win, watch the video at www.amyblack.lotosnile-dev.com. Viewers of the video can enter to receive a personalized URL to share the video. They can post the link on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace or email it to their friends.  The person who gets the most people to view Amy’s video by Thursday, June 2, 2011 through their personalized URL will win the iPod Touch with Amy Black’s music and videos.

They Might Be Giants Announce First Leg of International Tour!

They Might Be Giants new album, Join Us, is the recording that their fans have been waiting 20 years for! Impossibly catchy, sometimes strange and always original the album is a stunning return to form. On Join Us we find the Brooklyn originals have returned to rock and to their singular sensibility that made them an instant phenomenon in the world of alternative rock. Join Us is an electrifying mix of clever, maddeningly catchy songwriting and studio mastery. The album was created in the brand new private studio of their long-time collaborator Patrick Dillett (David Byrne, Mary J. Blige, Tegan and Sara, Doveman). Join Us will be released in all digital and physical outlets July 19, 2011 through Idlewild/Rounder Records.

The record opens with “Can’t Keep Johnny Down” -- a summer-perfect pop single that will get instantly stuck in your head and make you want to roll down the windows. Immediately following, the caffeinated fuzz of “You Probably Get That a Lot” will command you to pogo! “When Will You Die” features TMBG’s own formula for punk.

The short and sweet  “Judy Is Your Viet Nam” tells an anthemic tale of unrequited infatuation.  The pure folk-pop of “Old Pine Box” showcases the band's signature harmonies, handclaps and the always popular, never anticipated vocoder. The wit TMBG are known for is at it’s finest on Join Us, album closer “You Don’t Like Me” has lyrical gems like “I can see the future like it’s in the past”.  Check out the “Can’t Keep Johnny Down” MP3 HERE.

They Might Be Giants unlikely success story started nearly three decades ago with their Dial-A-Song service. High energy, low budget videos broke them into heavy rotation on MTV and the rest would soon become alternative rock history.  Along the way the band has become the recipients of two GRAMMYs and a platinum record (1990’s Flood). They recorded numerous themes including The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, their GRAMMY-winning theme Malcolm In the Middle and many more.

They Might Be Giants will launch the first leg of their first international tour in over a decade this Fall, hitting 6 countries and over 50 US cities. Notorious for their energized live show, don’t miss TMBG live in your city!

Phish: Live In Utica Box Set In Stores 5/24!

On October 20, 2010 Phish played their first ever show in Utica in the heart of the Mohawk Valley.  Utica Memorial Auditorium is a hockey arena with a capacity of about 5,700 and a design very similar to another round room and favorite Empire State Phish venue, Madison Square Garden.  Utica was the smallest venue on Phish's fall tour and the atmosphere was charged with electricity - the music was swinging, inspired and transcendent with a crowd that rose to the occasion.  One clever fan even went so far as to craft a "Guyutica" sign that no doubt helped shape the night’s events.  A new camera mounted at the front-of-house position accentuated the light show in a way never before featured on a live, indoor Phish DVD.  Set one was bookended by a soul sandwich, opening with "My Soul" and closing with "Run Like An Antelope" ("set the gearshift for the high gear of your soul").  "Vultures" and a funky "Wolfman's Brother" > "Cities" with local references brought the show to an early fever pitch.  The music seemed to play the band as intricate, full-band improvisation intertwined the songs of set one throughout an absurdly creative sequence of "Guyute", "David Bowie" and "Wilson”.  The show's theme song "Guyute" bloomed again repeatedly during "Saw It Again" and "Run Like An Antelope", both of which oozed with exquisite detail fueled by a fully mind-melded band and audience.  Set two built on the momentum of a stellar first set, opening the door with a patient, jazzy "Sand" > "Theme From The Bottom" and diving headlong through it with an explosive combination of "Split Open And Melt" > "Have Mercy" > "Piper" > "Split Open And Melt" > "Slave To The Traffic Light" that nearly blew the roof off the Utica Aud. By the time “Birds Of A Feather” re-appeared during “Piper”, it could accurately be described as Uticular.  In keeping with its series of interrelated themes, nearly optimum flow and an overall magical glow, Utica also showcased some relative rarities from The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday such as "McGrupp And The Watchful Hosemasters" and "Tela".

The nearly three hours of music on the Utica box set was recorded with 64 channels of digital multi-track and beautifully mixed and mastered, appearing on the DVD's in 5.1 Dolby surround and full-resolution, uncompressed PCM stereo. The video was shot with 8 cameras (16:9 widescreen), recorded and post-edited in High Definition.  Combining a stellar performance with gorgeous improvisation and a healthy sense of adventure, Utica makes it clear that the band is back and playing for keeps.

The Utica box set features the complete October 20, 2010 performance on 2-DVD’s and 2-CD’s to be released nationwide on May 24th.  The box set presents three hours of crucial Phish in an intimate venue with an inspired audience that returned the energy at every turn.

First Aid Kit Head Into The Studio With Producer Mike Mogis

First Aid Kid - the Swedish duo of sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg - are currently recording with acclaimed producer Mike Mogis at his ARC Studios in Omaha, NE.They'll spend the next month working on the follow-up to their highly praised debut album, The Big Black & The Blue, released last year on Wichita Recordings. In addition to being known as a member of Bright Eyes and Monsters Of Folk, Mogis is a renowned producer who has worked with artists including The Concretes, Cursive, Lightspeed Champion, Rilo Kiley, Sea Wolf, and Pete Yorn, among many others.

"We met Mike at Austin City Limits last year. He saw our show there and we got talking about recording an album together," said Klara and Johanna. "Bright Eyes was the band that got us inspired to start making music, so working with Mike is quite surreal for us. We feel honored. So far things are going really well and we believe we're in the process of creating something very special. This truly is a dream come true."

First Aid Kit broke out last year with the release of The Big Black & The Blue, garnering praise from AOL Music's Spinner blog, NPR's All Songs Considered, Nylon, and SPIN ('Breaking Out' artist), among others, and earning spots on HearYa, Nylon, and PasteMagazine.com's 'Best of 2010' lists. The year proved to be one of 'firsts' for the young band, who were only 17 (Klara) and 19-years old (Johanna) at the time of the album's release.

March 2010 saw First Aid Kit perform in the US for the first time at SXSW, which they followed with their first stateside headlining tour in June that included a sold-out stop at New York's Mercury Lounge. In September, they toured Australia and released a 7-inch single for album standout "Ghost Town," which featured a spectral cover of Fever Ray's "When I Grow Up" as a B-side in tribute to mentor Karin Dreijer Andersson (Fever Ray, The Knife), whose label Rabid released their debut EP Drunken Trees in 2008. First Aid Kit returned to tour the US again in October, with stops at the Austin City Limits festival and the CMJ Music Marathon (featuring a second sold-out NYC show at Joe's Pub).

The band rang in 2011 with the January release of a Third Man Records Blue Series 7-inch that featured covers of Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Universal Soldier" (made famous in 1965 by Donovan) and the classic blues standard "It Hurts Me Too" (a song much loved by fans of Karen Dalton's 1969 folk-blues version), recorded with Jack White at his own Third Man Studios in Nashville, TN.

Marty Stuart Reveals Lineup For 10th Annual Late Night Jam

GRAMMY award winner Marty Stuart will host a special 10th Anniversary Late Night Jam on June 8 beginning at 10:00 PM at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium.  Country music icons Dolly Parton, Mel Tillis and Connie Smith, along with The Quebe Sisters Band, Doug Kershaw and more surprise guests will be joining Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives for this year’s event.  The Late Night Jam has become the unofficial kick-off of the CMA Music Festival and prior to any lineup information being released, tickets for this year’s event have sold faster than ever before. Proceeds will benefit MusiCares with a portion also going to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

“It's hard to believe that the Late Night Jam is ten years old,” said Stuart.  “I can't help but think back on the first one.  I was nervous; pacing and hoping that we'd have enough people show up.  The show ended up being a sell-out and we’ve been going strong ever since.  That first show was over 25,000 people ago, and it was also many good deeds ago from MusiCares, and a lot of really magical performances ago from some of my dearest musical friends. Every year I say, ‘How can I top that show?’  Somehow it happens and good things result from it. This year will be no different.”

Over the past 10 years, Stuart has brought artists such as Keith Urban, Vince Gill, Dierks Bentley, Charlie Daniels, Porter Wagoner, Neko Case, Old Crow Medicine Show, Jerry Lee Lewis and more to the Ryman stage for a one of a kind marathon jam session all in the name of charity and country music.

Stuart, a stalwart of traditional country music, recently received his fifth career GRAMMY award for “Best Country Instrumental” for “Hummingbyrd,” from his critically acclaimed album GHOST TRAIN (THE STUDIO B SESSIONS).  His TV show, The Marty Stuart Show, continues to bring traditional country music into living rooms across the country every Saturday night on RFD-TV.   Upcoming episodes will feature Brad Paisley, Old Crow Medicine Show, Keith Urban, Paul Shaffer and Travis Tritt.

Morning Teleportation on Letterman Wed | 5/4/11

Morning Teleportation will bring their roller coaster of tumultuous rock 'n' roll and deep-space pickin' 'n' grinnin to The Late Show With David Letterman on Wednesday, May 4th, marking the band's network television debut. The band will perform the title track off of their debut album, "Expanding Anyway" which was recently released on Glacial Pace Recordings and was produced by label owner Isaac Brock along with Clay Jones.

The album has received rave reviews from the NY Times to SPIN. "Yelping and shouting like a genuine mental case, frontman Tiger Merritt rides a joyously chaotic wave on [the band's] debut," writes Jon Young in SPIN's album review, featured in their April issue. "Morning Teleportation possess their own wacky identity, lurching from avant-garde mischief to pop operatics to folk sweetness." Curious fans can head on over to SPIN.com for an exclusive full album listen by clicking here

This week also marks the band's debut at MTVU as part of their new artists show "The Freshmen." The show spotlights emerging artists on air and online, with the chance for one of the videos to get an automatic add into rotation on the channel the following week. Fans can vote for Morning Teleportation's video for "Expanding Anyway" by clicking all this week. Voting will end on Friday May 6th at 2:00pm EST.

The video for "Expanding Anyway" is a modern psychedilc experience created by Phantasmic, a small and unique visual duo consisting of Tripp and Jenna Watt. Phantasmic hand-crafted every aspect of the project which began with an original list of over 170 different ideas that resulted in 31 final scenes, ranging from watercolor paintings to Crayola marker creatures, acting in tights to choreographed dance numbers.  You can check out the Making Of Video as well the director's cut of the final video.

Morning Teleportation takes their critically acclaimed live show back out on the road on May 18th and will continue to tour throughout the summer. NPR recently selected the band as a must-see in their SXSW preview noting, "It's got this great burst of energy in the vocals, real cacophonous psychedelia." While Jon Pareles of the New York Times wrote about the band's live show last year saying, "Morning Teleportation, from Portland, Ore., crammed ideas into songs that leaped impatiently, and gleefully, from style to style." Pareles also recently reviewed the band's debut album noting, "Euphoria and transformation run through Morning Teleportation's debut album, "Expanding Anyway" (Glacial Pace), which puts neat, strategic structure behind its giddy psychedelic cheer."
