Kids of Widney High Release Full-Length Documentary

“After I take over the world, I want to learn how to play the bass,” says effervescent, long-time Kids of Widney High member Cain Fonseca. One of nine singer/songwriters, Cain is a young adult from East LA with developmental disabilities who—along with the rest of the Kids—writes, records, and performs his own unique brand of rock music.

Begun in 1988 at special-education high school Joseph P. Widney High, the Kids grew out of an adaptive songwriting class that is still in operation today and continues to churn out specialized musicians and singers, some of whom have formed their own permutation of “Kids of Widney High”-esque bands.

Having in the past been compared to the likes of: Daniel Johnston, Wesley Willis, Langley Schools Music Project, and Florence Foster Jenkins, the Kids of Widney High have been covered in both concert performances and on album recordings by such hot bands as: the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Aquabats, and Osaka Popstar (comprised of members of: the Ramones, the Misfits, and Black Flag). They also boast a dedicated fanbase that includes everyone from Marilyn Manson and Fiona Apple to actor James Garner and filmmaker Spike Jonze. Playing the LA leg of the Warped Tour some years back, a prominent record producer handed to the Kids their first album—made by an earlier lineup of members—that had at one time been owned by Kurt Cobain.

In the past, the Kids have worked with musical luminaries Jackson Browne (who assisted them with the recording of the second of four albums they have out to date), Mr. Bungle/Faith No More frontman Mike Patton (who took them on their first tour along with Bungle, and who put out a Kids album on indie pioneering label Ipecac), and various producers/writers from South Park who worked with the Kids and a similar group, MTV’s How’s Your News, on a television pilot some years back. The Kids were also prominently featured in comedic hit film The Ringer starring Johnny Knoxville and Katherine Heigl.

Having now broadened their artistic endeavors to encapsulate: fine art, films, music videos, short documentaries of their own, creative writings, poetry, and fashion designs, the Kids decided upon taking their first headlining, full-length tour up the West Coast (from Los Angeles to Seattle and back) two summers ago. Along the way, the Kids played a number of gigs at high-profile venues, made time for local print/online media syndicates and radio shows, exhibited their artwork and short films, and read their writings (including one oration at Beat epicenter City Lights in San Francisco).

Sponsored in part by Sony PlayStation, this tour was also an opportunity for the majority of Kids members—all of whom come from financially challenged backgrounds—to see a world outside of the city of Los Angeles. But, as Kids member (and self-proclaimed “class clown”) Peewee proudly intones, “We’re not here to tell a sob story. No! We’re having fun. Are you having fun?”

Act Your Age: The Kids of Widney High Story is a vibrant, life-affirming, funny, and wholly compassionate film that explores just what happens when a specialized group of artists such as the Kids of Widney High finally take to the road as they visit new cities and peoples, teaching their fans about the changing world of the disabled community at large. Along the way, the Kids fight, they love, they grow apart and together, they party—as do all raucous rock bands on such rapid-fire tours!—and come out the other end, as Kids frontman Shelly Goodhope says of himself, “A better man.”

Supplemented by over ten years of footage from various venues, fans, groupies, and the Kids themselves, Act Your Age is also an incredibly intimate portrait of a subculture that has been for far too long misunderstood and, ultimately, disenfranchised in the eyes of the general mainstream public.

Comparable to such independent mainstay music documentaries as: Dig!, End of the Century, and Fugazi’s Instrument, Act Your Age: The Kids of Widney High Story is a poignant and often funny look at a group of artists who are ready to challenge conventional notions about persons with disabilities and contemporary art in America today.

Albert King/Stevie Ray Vaughan 'In Session'

On December 6, 1983, legendary blues guitarist Albert King joined his disciple Stevie Ray Vaughan on a Canadian sound stage for the live music television series In Session. Magic happened. The highly sought after video footage from that one-time legendary summit becomes available for the first time ever on November 9 with the release of Stax Records’ deluxe two-disc CD/DVD In Session.

The DVD contains three classic performances unavailable on the previously issued audio disc: “Born Under a Bad Sign,” the landmark title track from Albert King’s biggest Stax release written by William Bell and Booker T. Jones; Stevie Ray’s “Texas Flood,” the Larry Davis-penned title track of Vaughan’s immortal debut album; and “I’m Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town,” made famous by Louis Jordan and later, Ray Charles.

“It was evident from the first choruses,” writes liner notes author/musicologist Samuel Charters, “that they were playing for each other. And that was the best audience either of them could ever have. The music never lost its intensity, its quality of something very important being handed back and forth and there was time for Stevie and Albert to see where their ideas took them.”

Accolades have showered upon this momentous encounter. “As a document of what was probably one of the greatest nights in the musical life of SRV, this belongs in the collection of every true fan,” said the Austin American-Statesman. Sonic Boomers added, “Both men are gone now, but rare recordings like In Session remind us of a time when blues giants still walked the earth side by side.” Elmore magazine called it “an indispensible part of any blues fan’s collection.” And BluesWax noted, “thank goodness, this disc lives on and on.”

Now this one-of-a-kind visual document featuring two giants of American blues can be enjoyed by audiences all over the world. Sadly, King and Vaughan would not share a stage together ever again. Vaughan, 31 years King’s junior, died in a helicopter crash in the fog on the way back from a concert in 1990. King outlived him by two years, dying of a heart attack in 1992. They didn’t meet often, and their careers took different paths. But we can all be grateful for that one long day in a television studio when sparks flew and this timeless performance was forever captured.

Guitarist Mike Keneally + Drummer Marco Minnemann = Evidence of Humanity

One bright morning, world-renowned drummer Marco Minnemann (Eddie Jobson's UZ, Nina Hagen, Necrophagist, Paul Gilbert, David Torn and countless others) settled down behind the DW kit in his secluded hideaway, punched the record button, and proceeded to pound out an astounding 52-minute improvised solo. When it was finished, he christened it Normalizer 2 and offered it as a sort of gift to a handful of his favorite guitarists, hoping that they would each add their own signature madness to the mix.

Multi-instrumentalist Mike Keneally (Frank Zappa, Steve Vai, Dethklok, Joe Satriani and, again, countless others) was someone Marco hoped would dig the idea. In the throes of recording his intense and complex Scambot 1 album (released last year on Exowax), Mike leapt at Marco's offer-- the creation of Evidence of Humanity would be a joyous, freewheeling counterpoint to his meticulous work on Scambot. "A fun ride," Mike would recall.

Frequently, while recording his parts, Mike would respond improvisationally to a section of Marco's drum solo, recording a melodic statement on guitar, keyboard or bass, and then overdubbing orchestrational support to the original improvised part. On other sections, Mike would compose movement strenuously in unison with Marco's initial improvised outburst.

The ecstatic result is something like two of the world's foremost musicians improvising together, but not at the same time. It's a record unlike any other that Mike has recorded (but probably closest to Nonkertompf, his indefinable, mostly instrumental 1999 solo extravaganza). Evidence of Humanity seems to have a life of its own, mutating and maturing with each listen.

Accompanying the Evidence of Humanity CD is a DVD, containing a tasty reimagining of the original concept. This time, Mike and Marco got together in real time and vaulted into the ether for another 52-minute musical improvisation, a feat that was videotaped for your pleasure and entitled Elements Of A Manatee. The DVD also includes an insightful conversation between the two kindred musical spirits, shot in the back seat of a car hurtling toward the Southern California desert's dilapidated Salton Sea.

Ryan Montbleau Band’s Heavy on the Vine Ripe for Picking

“Time hangs heavy on the vine/Let’s make wine,” Ryan Montbleau sings in the lulling, sensual verse that gives his group’s new album its title. Ryan Montbleau Band has been tending its own musical vineyard for a few years, on the patient cusp of a breakthrough. Their distinctive, long-fermenting blend of neo-folk, classic soul, and kick-out-the-jams Americana finally comes to full fruition in Heavy on the Vine, due out September 21, 2010 on indie Blue’s Mountain Records. It’s an album that represents the product of — and further promise of — a very good year.

It’s been a good year already. The group spent much of it both as opening act and backing band for Martin Sexton, including a round of dates with the Dave Matthews Band. Sexton in turn produced Heavy on the Vine. “I used to dream about getting to meet Martin Sexton,” says Ryan, “and now we’re getting hired as his backing band and he’s producing our record.

“He may not be a household name but to me and so many others, he’s a legend,” Montbleau adds. “But one thing he made clear from the start was that he didn’t want his fingerprints on this record. He wanted us to just play and be us.”

As a songwriter, Ryan recently contributed the single “Something Beautiful” to Trombone Shorty’s recent major-label debut album Backatown. Shorty turned to no less than Lenny Kravitz to contribute vocals and a guitar solo to the track, to help bring across the song’s soulful vibe.  Ryan also co-wrote the Backatown track “One Night Only,” the tune Shorty and his band performed on their Late Night with David Letterman debut in June.

“I’m not one of these people who’s like, ‘Oh, we can’t be pigeonholed.’ I honestly wish we could, just so I could describe it quickly to people,” Montbleau says. “This record has folk songs, funk songs, country tunes, a reggae tune . . . and the end is almost like prog-rock. It’s all over the map, but it’s all us, and we always do it wholeheartedly. We’ve sort of come up in the jam scene, and that’s where our hearts have been in a lot of ways. But we don’t go off on 15-minute epics. We’re actually trying to make the songs shorter as we go. So I would lean more toward the Americana thing than the jam thing. But more than anything, we’re definitely about the song.”

The “us”-ness of the band comes through in Heavy on the Vine in vivid, funny, touching, and hummable spades. The opening “Slippery Road” playfully examines the fine line of moderation between inebriation and sobriety, a subject familiar to most of Montbleau’s contemporaries and more than a few non-musicians. “Carry,” the purest love song Montbleau has written, is in demand as a wedding song by some romantics who’ve heard it being road-tested. “Fix Your Wings” deals with damage and healing in relationships, with tight gospel harmonies adding to the surprisingly sprightly feel. Both the rocking “Here at All” and the ’20s-styled “Stay” address the itinerant musician’s thwarted impulse to settle in one place for more than one night at a time. An admirer of Paul Simon, Montbleau reaches some of his greatest lyrical heights in “Straw in the Wind,” which asks, “Wouldn’t it be nice . . . if you could reconcile the smile you want to feel with the one that you show?”

“For the song ‘More and More and More’ we had done another weirder version in the studio with a strange old synthesizer. But Martin said, ‘We need to try a Rolling-Stones-in-Nashville country version of this,’ with an untuned piano they had in the studio. And it turned out great.”

The Peabody, Mass. native got his first guitar at age nine but didn’t get the bug to become a serious player until he was attending Villanova University. He spent many years as an acoustic solo artist. His first album, Begin (2002), was followed by the live Stages. The first Montbleau Band recording was One Fine Color (2006). And by the time 2007’s Patience on Friday was released, Ryan Montbleau Band (Montbleau, guitar, lead vocals; Laurence Scudder, viola, vocals; Jason Cohen, keyboards; James Cohen, drums; Matt Giannaros, bass, vocals; and Yahuba, percussion, vocals) were hometown heroes.

The band’s unusual makeup was somewhat accidental, as the leader tells it; he never had it in mind, for instance, that he needed a full-time viola player. “It just evolved over the years, because I really didn’t have a sound that I was going for,” he says, before qualifying that claim. “Well, I knew I wanted an upright bass, I guess. And I knew I wanted the drummer in some ways to be more of a jazz drummer than a straight-ahead rock drummer. But that was all I knew. I’ve personally always loved the B3 organ, but the keyboard approach really comes from Jason (Cohen), who’s a vintage gear nut and tone junkie who loves old Rhodes, organs, Wurlitzers, Moogs, etc.”

Abject realism and a sense of limitless possibility coexist in Montbleau’s ever-ripening mind. “For the last 10 years, I’ve had this insane desire to just go out there and do this. And I face the realities that, okay, I’m 33 and I’m not selling out stadiums yet. I get more realistic as I go and I also get more appreciative of just being able to do this at all. My goal for a few years when I was starting out was to make a living off playing music, and now I’ve been doing that for seven years or so, and the goals change as you go. Now the goal is to spend more time practicing and writing and creating, and a little less time doing all the business stuff.”

Tempted as Montbleau might be to look toward the big picture, not losing sight of the small one is why the band has maintained such a loyal and evangelistically inclined base. “I still go back to my original philosophy of just one person at a time,” he says. “I never even told people ‘Bring your friends to the show’ at the beginning, because it wasn’t about them bringing their friends, it was about them bringing themselves. I’m trying to focus on the one person, because if they come and like it, they are going to bring their friends. We’re still grass roots in that way.” No surprise, then, that those well-tended roots have sprung up into such pregnant vines.

Girl Talk Releases NYE Chicago Documentary

In the first few days of 2010, we shared news of Girl Talk’s mind-blowing, over-the-top New Year’s Eve extravaganza, where he threw one of the largest house parties the world has seen to celebrate the end of the decade. With so much time and effort put into making this such an extraordinary night, Girl Talk (aka Gregg Gillis) and his crew decided not just those in attendance, but all Girl Talk fans, should have a chance to see the insanity. The planning and show was documented on multiple HD cameras, and has now been made into a short film that’s almost ready to be shared. You can get a sneak peek of “Girl Talk NYE Chicago” by checking out the trailer here.

To give you an idea, here’s what went down: As a surprise to the 4,500-capacity Congress Theatre audience in Chicago, Girl Talk had a two-story, five room house built on stage. This house took months to plan, and 4+ full days and 21+ crewmembers to build. Girl Talk and the set designers seriously took things to the next level when it came to the detail that went into each aspect of the house. They drywalled the rooms, made a real staircase, and fake wooden floors, built a kitchen that included a refrigerator with a note stuck on the door, and a table with a fruit bowl, blender and more, a living room that included a hutch filled with china, fireplace, couch, coffee table, rug, picture frames and more, the kid's room had a bed, desk, computer and mouse, pencil jar, trophy, amongst other items, and the bathroom featured a real toilet, sink, shower and curtain. Plus, outside the house, there were even fake trees lining the yard, and a rock was placed in front of the house covering the table Girl Talk works on. The lights constructed on the outside and inside of the house, including an LCD curtain surrounding the house to make it look like the night sky, and all over the venue, were equally elaborate. When the house was first presented to the audience, only a few lamps inside each room were turned on, however, as the night neared midnight, the house counted down from 9 to 0, and then once midnight hit, the house came alive as lights all over the house, inside and out, shown bright. The kitchen floor eventually lit up turning into a disco-dance floor, the entire bathroom could strobe any color, the computer in the kid’s room had an LED light attached to it, and intense lights came from the fireplace. There were also special lights strategically hidden all over the venue that were active and radiant throughout the night. Check out stills from the film below.

Girl Talk has been on the road nonstop since Feed The Animals was released in June 2008. After playing over 240 shows and rarely taking more than five days off at a time, Gregg has finally taken a break for most of the summer to work on his next album, which will be unleashed upon the world in early 2011. Will Hoge Announces New Single And Tour!

Critically-acclaimed Nashville rocker Will Hoge’s latest album THE WRECKAGE received high praise from the likes of USA Today, calling it “both welcome and worth the wait.”   On Oct. 11, the second single from the disc, “Favorite Waste of Time,” will be released to radio.

“This song was a first taker in the studio,” says Hoge.  “We tracked all of it with just the four band members going live.  It just had such a great 'live' energy.   We later tried to beat the original guitar solo, but we weren’t ever able to top the feel and emotion of that first take so we just went with it.  And the lyric is pretty relatable for guys and girls...it’s definitely a fan favorite out on the road.”

BBC calls the track a “catchy, good-time rocker designed to rev up an audience,” while American Songwriter boasts that it “bites with bitterness and searing kiss-off electric guitar.”

A Slingshot On Mars Tour Preview

Following a stellar summer tour full of great festivals and friends we are excited to hit the road again for the Slingshot On Mars Tour starting September 9th. Upcoming dates include stops in Knoxville and Memphis, TN, Terrapin Hill Farm in KY and the Orange Peel in Asheville, NC. Then we make first time stops at the Greenfield Lake Amphitheatre in Wilmington, NC and the Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville, VA before a weekend run through some of our favorite east coast stops including The Norva, Rams Head Live and 9:30 Club. Along the way we will celebrate our time in Baltimore and DC with a Cap Centre Weekend. On 9/17 and 9/18 DSO will choose from the legendary Grateful Dead Capital Centre shows and will recreate that show in its entirety. We will then round off our tour with a special acoustic set at Mexicali Live along with stops in Munhall, PA, Wilmington, DE, Philadelphia, Albany, Toads Place in New Haven, CT, Syracuse, Northampton and Lowell, MA before closing out the tour in the 'Big Apple' at the Nokia Theatre.

From A City Near You Tour

DSO is celebrating our return to the West Coast by recreating shows From a City Near You. Each night Dark Star will choose a Grateful Dead show from a city close to that venue and will recreate that show in its entirety. This will be the perfect time to gather your tour buddies and relive the experience or for you to see that show for the first time that you have only heard stories about.

The tour kicks off in the "Golden State" with 2 nights in good ole San Francisco at the Regency Ballroom. From there we head up to Sacramento then over to the banks of Lake Tahoe for a stop at the Crystal Bay Club Casino before returning to Cali for shows in Anaheim and LA before a Saturday night stop in 'Sin City' and a Sunday/Monday run at the Belly Up Tavern in Solona Beach. The last week of tour brings us back to the Mile High City with stops in Tempe and Flagstaff AZ, Salt Lake City and the tour Closer at the Fillmore in Denver.

August 9, 2010 marks the 15 year anniversary of legendary musician and Grateful Dead co-founder Jerry Garcia's death. As a way to honor his musical and community legacy, the gifted musicians on this compilation have generously contributed stirring live performances of Jerry Garcia songs to benefit the Rex Foundation. The album includes four exclusive previously unreleased live Garcia songs from Phish, Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers, The String Cheese Incident, and Keller & The Keels. Other artists in the order they appear on the album are: Railroad Earth, The Black Crowes, Moonalice, Yonder Mountain String Band, The Waybacks, Widespread Panic, Hot Buttered Rum, and Steve Kimock Crazy Engine. All proceeds are a contribution to the Rex Foundation.

FOLK-ROCK DUO LONG WOODSON TO RELEASE 2ND CD

Folk-rock duo Long Woodson, the prolific pair whose songwriting prowess extends to book-intricate concept albums, will release its second, ROBYVILLE (Robyville Records; Sept. 21, 2010), with a show in Austin to celebrate just two days later.

ROBYVILLE details a fictional West Texas town full of misfits hiding out from mainstream America, each song written about or from the perspective of one of them. Dark lyrics, harmony hooks and gritty vocals paint a picture of survival and hope behind mandolin, Spanish and acoustic guitars, harmonica, and distorted electric guitar.
Matt Long and Gunter Woodson met at The University of Texas and played together in several Austin rock bands. After a time, the duo began to record some of the songs in what has become a growing catalog of co-written material. The result was its first concept album, the acclaimed GIRL UPSTAIRS, which was released in 2009.
ROBYVILLE promises listeners a stimulating journey and a fascinating visit with a colorful cast of characters — with “Nikki,” “Jimi,” “Creole Man” and nine more tracks.

The String Cheese Incident Launches Rhythm of the Road series

The String Cheese Incident announces a brand new live archival series with Rhythm of the Road: Volume 1, Incident in Atlanta – 11.17.00. Available 11.09.10 in celebration of the historic show’s ten year anniversary, this will be the first offering in SCI’s new series “Rhythm of the Road” which will be highlighting many of the band’s most celebrated concerts with remastered limited edition releases.

2000 was a big year for SCI as they became a true touring force, settling into larger venues for the first time, including Red Rocks in Colorado, The Warfield in San Francisco, and New Orleans’ Saenger Theatre. The band finished off a long East Coast fall tour with three nights in Athens and Atlanta, GA, and it’s the middle night on 11.17.00 that fans still talk about as one of the best in the band’s career. With special guest Tony Furtado on banjo for several songs and featuring covers of Led Zeppelin, Talking Heads, John Coltrane, Peter Rowan, and Peter Gabriel, as well as bluegrass standards and a host of SCI originals, this show is the perfect way to kick off The String Cheese Incident’s archival series “Rhythm of the Road.”

Incident in Atlanta features the entire 11.17.00 performance, lovingly remastered from the original 24-bit multi-track master tapes and made available on CD, download (MP3, FLAC) and, an SCI first, 24-bit FLAC download. It will be released on November 9th in stores, through SCI Merchandise, and www.LiveCheese.com.

EOTO, MiMOSA and MartyParty Unite for 11 Day Tour

The west coast is about to experience its first bass driven earthquake as three of the nation's top live electro, dubstep and glitch and producers join together for their first combined tour. The 11-day circuit will kick off this September in San Diego and will make its way up the coast featuring electronica artists EOTO, MiMOSA and MartyParty. Listeners can expect to be transported into another space and time with the sound and fury of the most respected dance music produced live on the scene today.

Electronica music does not have humble roots. Since its inception, the driving beats have moved bodies with a tribal-like abandon; inspiring colorful dance parties with almost a trance-like effect. New technologies have given birth to entire genres of musical sub-cultures - though none have seen such significant growth as the DubStep and Glitch categories are experiencing today. Built on unusual time signatures, clipped segments of samples and occasional vocals the genre favors dark, experimental themes laced with break beats and heavy bass.

Embracing cutting edge techniques combined with live on the spot looping, EOTO is pioneering a whole new approach to this emerging genre of dance music. The duo creates samples in real time by playing; cutting and mixing every sound live before the audience. Using nothing pre-recorded they blend an array of live instruments including vocals, keyboards, bass, guitar, hand drums and a full drum kit as they twist and loop each sound into music that would easily suit a soundtrack for a sci-fi movie. With leagues of sold-out theater performances in 2009 and a seemingly endless tour, EOTO fine-tunes their approach and skill with each and every show, leaving the next performance more unique then the last.

Mimosa has made a distinct mark on the west coast sound in the past two years and has become one of the top west coast exports. This young producer's energy whilst performing is magnetic; the word has spread fast and Mimosa has recently shared the stage with the likes Benga, Skream, Rusko, Datsik, Glitch Mob, Pretty Lights, Bassnectar and Flying Lotus, playing shows across the US and festivals like Coachella, Symbiosis Gathering, Burning Man and Decibel Festival. Fans know Mimosa as someone who brings a good-time energy that is as fierce as it is friendly, taking them on journeys through urban chaos and ecstasy.

Since 2007 MartyParty has produced sets of original music that range from melodic instrumental hip hop to bassline oriented dubstep. MartyParty has started a movement back towards the power of the melody and the harmony in electronic composition. Song writing has always been Marty's passion instead of the typical beat style dj production. The music is a hybrid of electronic music and hip hop that together form a totally new flavor of urban beat with the hypnotic elements of electronic music and hard-hitting bass. The MartyParty live performance is an intense journey that pulls together the MartyParty songs overlaid with urban samples triggered live. The result is a true "crunky" and "hyphy" experience like no other.
