Trixie Whitley & Brian Blade, Return to Forever IV, Angus & Julia Stone, Absynthe Minded, Morcheeba, Al Di Meola World Sinfonia feat. Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Randy Brecker/Bill Evans Soulbop Band feat. Medeski, Martin & Wood, Michel Portal Quintet, Agnes Obel, Red Snapper, Dave Holland Quintet, Al Foster/George Mraz Quartet feat. Fred Hersch, Terence Blanchard Quintet and Nouvelle  Vague.

The following bands have already been announced: B.B. King, Gotan Project, Raphael Saadiq, Mavis Staples, Jef Neve Trio and Sing The Truth with Angelique Kidjo, Dianne Reeves & Lizz Wright.

The 10th edition of the Gent Jazz Festival will begin on Thursday July 7th with none other than Sonny Rollins as the Special Nights’ headliner. This jazz legend had been on the festival’s wish list for a very long time and the birthday edition is an excellent occasion. His concert is preceded by the Michel Portal Quintet. The Nathan Daems Quintet, opens the Special Night after having won Young Jazz Talent 2010, the youth contest held yearly on the festival’s fringes.

On Friday the 8th of July, Al Di Meola World Sinfonia, together with special guest Gonzalo Rubalcaba will perform, with Dave Holland Quintet and Al Foster/George Mraz Quartet feat. Fred Hersch. The day’s opener is a coaching project in co-operation with University College Conservatory Ghent called Quartet dal Cuore feat. Paolo Ghetti.

July 9th is the festival’s first Saturday and a Special Night as well. B.B. King, Mavis Staples and the trio of Steven De Bruyn, Tony Gyselinck & Roland will be present.

On Sunday July 10th, the festival’s first four days will be concluded by Return to Forever IV Hymn of the 7th Galaxy Tour (an excellent band with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White, Jean-Luc Ponty and Frank Gambale). The Belgian Rêve D’ Éléphant Orchestra will open before Terence Blanchard Quintet and Randy Brecker/Bill Evans Soulbop Band with Medeski, Martin & Wood.

Thursday July 14th three jazz queens will line up with Sing The Truth: Angelique Kidjo, Dianne Reeves & Lizz Wright continue the legacies of Miriam Makeba, Abbey Lincoln and Odetta. Three current icons will pay tribute to the women of song from the last generation. They will be preceded by Jef Neve and his trio and Philip Catherine Plays Cole Porter.

Both revelations Agnes Obel and Agnus & Julia Stone are on stage Friday July 15th. This day will be supplemented by local band  Absynthe Minded. It’s a day dedicated to bands currently breaking through internationally and striving to meet high expectations in the future.

Gent Jazz Festival announces Gotan Project who are electro-tango masters and a retro-funk musician Raphael Saadiq on July 16th. Nouvelle Vague will be the first group to play on the initial day of the Gentse Feesten.

Daniel Lanois’ Black Dub feat. Trixie Whitley & Brian Blade will play on the closing day, July 17th. The festival organization looks forward to this concert after having cancelled Daniel Lanois’ Black Dub last year due to a motorcycle accident. But we are looking forward to vocalist Trixie Whitley as well. Last year her performance won hearts and minds with a special project. Later that day groups include: BackBack which is a local band, Red Snapper and Morcheeba with frontwoman Skye in the original line-up.

The music contest ‘Young Jazz Talent Ghent, an initiative in co-operation Duvel-Moortgat brewery will take place at the festival grounds’ entrance. Free entry every time right before the first concert on the main stage.

Keeping the Show on the Road With Railroad Earth

After 10 successful years on the road, Railroad Earth will mark their 10th anniversary with a special concert this May at the prestegious Wellmont Theater, in Montclair, NJ. The milestone will be one of many key performances throughout the Mid-West and Southern States, marking a turning point for the 6-piece rootsy Americana act who has shown remarkable growth in the last year.

Stillwater, NJ band, Railroad Earth, known in most circles as an Americana / improvisational band, brings the music world the rare blend of feel-good music filled with introspection and story-filled lyrics that shape not only the song, but the perspective of their devoted 'super-fan' listeners. Yet, this is not just another touring band to hit the scene with a large fan base that follows them from show to show. They are a group of deeply grounded musicians sharing a story that has been woven through a living counterculture since the 1960's --- when tuning in and dropping out was part of the daily norm.

Featuring an unusual cast of characters and instruments the Railroad Earth sound is made up of 6 parts, including: Todd Sheaffer (Lead vocals, acoustic and electric guitars), Tim Carbone (Violin, electric guitar, vocals), John Skehan (Mandolin, bouzouki, vocals), Andy Goessling (Acoustic and electric guitars, banjo, dobro, lap steel, mandolin, flute, pennywhistle, saxophones and vocals), Carey Harmon (Drums, hand percussion, vocals) and Andrew Altman (Upright and electric bass). The project features soaring arrangements, touching ballads and the kind of on the spot mid-song improvisation that leaves fans clamoring for more, and steady ticket sales growth in every market they visit!

For more information about Railroad Earth or tickets go to: www.railroadearth.com or check out their Electronic Press Kit

Up until the release of their October 2010 self-titled album (which gained great reviews in publications such as: Vanity Fair, Men's Health, Blurt, New York Time Out and, most recently, the esteemed music review blog, Daytrotter), Railroad Earth has nearly skirted the limelight - favoring the kind of success that connects them directly with their fans in a near instant communal experience. And in turn, the group has grown vastly over the years, primarily on rock solid national ticket sales and word-of-mouth grassroots marketing. And while Railroad Earth has made cameos on the pages of indie and mainstream journals as recently as last month, their dedication to the grit of American life and the road as traveling minstrels prevails.

2010 was a remarkable year for The String Cheese Incident, with more than 15 years of touring under their belt the band entered a new phase where select events and special destinations took the place of long stretches on the road. This new touring model was highlighted by sold out stops at Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Horning’s Hideout, and monstrous “Hulaween” Incidents at Hampton Coliseum. 2010 also found SCI launching the acclaimed classic archival series Rhythm of the Road, which kicked-off with the legendary Vol 1: Incident in Atlanta - 11.17.00 show from Atlanta, GA.

The Black Ryder Announce Tour Dates With The Cult

Straight from the land of OZ, The Black Ryder are set to release their full length Buy The Ticket, Take The Ride on September 21st via Mexican Summer. Harping a comforting 90's sound of rhinestone drone, this amazing record is a true trip from start to finish and will be released digitally, on CD, and vinyl.
Previously released only in Australia in 2009, Buy The Ticket, Take The Ride is chock full of brooding vocals and dark mysterious paths on a pitch black open road. Complimented with comfort by a tambourine beat of dreams, singer Aimee Nash's voice is a soothing romp, effortlessly partnered with guitarist Scott Van Ryper. TBR is a carefully thought out process of melody, sound, texture, time, space, dynamics, mood, and effect. Says Nash "It is a labor of love that is carefully constructed with particular emphasis on melody, harmony, and placement. This makes more sense to me than trying to draw comparisons or categorizing ourselves into any one genre or style of music." Standouts like "All That We See" and "Gone without Feeling"  are psychedelic markers of calm on this strong debut.
Whilst this collection of recorded works was all done by the band themselves, The Black Ryder has had the great pleasure of working with Peter Hayes & Leah Shapiro of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Graham Bonnar (ex-Swervedriver). The band made their live debut on the B.R.M.C Australian tour (January 2008) and have since opened for The Raveonettes, The Brian Jonestown Massacre & The Charlatans.
