EOTO Announces July & August Dates

hannThe left coast breakbeat, glitch-hop and house duo known as EOTO is set to play nine momentous shows through the end of August, on top of their already jam-packed festival schedule. Since the new year rolled around, EOTO has toured relentlessly, playing more than 100 shows and making a name for themselves as pioneers of a new sound, an innovative blend of live instrumentation and digital mixing. The duo descends on Denver on July 16 for Thunk: A Live Art Exhibition at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom, before heading northeast to Pennsylvania. Then it's back across country to Idaho, Washington and up into Canada, before coming back through Colorado, Utah and ultimately, Missouri.

Featuring Jason Hann and Michael Travis, formerly of the progressive jam outfit The String Cheese Incident, EOTO is a shot of adrenaline to the heart of the music industry. Differing in sonic stature from their mixing forefathers, the typical EOTO live experience is 100% atypical, meaning nothing is pre-recorded, nothing is pre-looped and no set is pre-planned. Every night is a distinctive journey into the musical minds of Hann and Travis, each feeding off of the other’s creativity and the audience’s vibes. EOTO combines cutting-edge technology with live instrumental performance to create truly original and melodic dance music in the moment.

No group on the circuit tours as hard as EOTO and nothing has changed for the foreseeable future, save a few festival dates in exchange for the night-after-night venue spots they have played so far in 2009. Hann and Travis have been from west to east and everywhere in between in just seven months and are primed to play at least 35 shows between now and the end of September. It will be a nice break for the two to venture back indoors for July and August dates, where the bone-quaking and mind-rippling beats they create spontaneously are well at home. By the time they reach Missouri, EOTO will have more than proven they are big enough and calculated enough for the wide open spaces of the festival tour, but refined enough for the Theater.

Ellnora Guitar Festival Announces 2009 Event

The return of Krannert Center for the Performing Arts' biennial guitar festival Ellnora | The Guitar Festival at Krannert arrives September 10-12, 2009. This newly renamed, three-day, round-the-clock guitar extravaganza will emerge with over 30 guitarists, scores of musical collaborators, innovative engagement events, 11 free performances, and global perspectives on all things guitar.

Propelled by the extraordinary success of the Wall to Wall Guitar Festival in 2005 and 2007, the 2009 festival promises an astonishing collection of genres and artists, the return of the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, a Guitar Hero gaming station, community engagement programs with Dan Zanes and Friends, and numerous opportunities to delve deeper into this truly international instrument through commentaries, discussions, and interactive workshops-all assembled by Krannert Center's director Mike Ross and his staff in collaboration with the festival's artistic advisor, David Spelman. Spelman, the founder/director of the New York Guitar Festival, also launched the Adelaide International Guitar Festival in South Australia in 2007 and has served as the artistic advisor for all three biennial Krannert Center festivals.

Plans to rename the festival, now dubbed Ellnora | The Guitar Festival at Krannert Center, first began as the Center embarked on preparations for this third biennial event. The festivals in 2005 and 2007 had served as microcosms of the Center's strong commitment to diversity, quality, and distinctiveness in programming. In approaching its latest incarnation, the staff realized that the first party had grown into an internationally recognized arts event and were concerned that it might be confused with other endeavors that had "wall to wall" in their titles. The decision to change the name also rested on a desire to better reflect the festival's distinctiveness and the unique micro-urban setting of Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. This examination ultimately led organizers back to the inception of the Center in the 1960s, when philanthropists Herman and Ellnora Krannert first envisioned the multifaceted facility that has become a leading university-based performing arts center. Key to that vision was Mrs. Krannert's captivating plan to utilize the central lobby as a crossroads for audiences, artists, academics, and community members to meet, mix, and mingle in celebration of the arts. Ellnora Krannert's exceptional foresight has continued to lead the Center in the more than 40 years since. It was with this lineage in mind that the Wall to Wall Guitar Festival was reborn as Ellnora-to honor the philosophy, philanthropy, and powerful leadership of the Center's first patron.

The 2009 artist roster includes Ani DiFranco, the Keb' Mo' Band, the Derek Trucks Band, Bill Frisell's Disfarmer Project, The National, Chicha Libre, Junior Brown, The Jerry Douglas Band, Dan Zanes & Friends, Alex de Grassi, the Leni Stern Quartet, the Frank Vignola Trio, the Brasil Guitar Duo, Debashish Bhattacharya, The Long Count, The Sisters Euclid, Nigel North, Paul Galbraith, the Brazilian Guitar Quartet, Erin McKeown & Natalia Zukerman, the Jake Hertzog Trio, Richard Julian & Jim Campilongo, the Laurie Morvan Band, and Luciana Souza & Romero Lubambo.

Regular updates will be posted at EllnoraGuitarFestival.com. Single tickets and festival passes go on sale July 16 at 10am. Festival passes include all eight events; passes must be purchased by August 2 for priority seating. Festival pass prices range from $80 for students to $192 for standard admission.

A Story of Floating Weeds with live music by Alex de Grassi
In this 1934 silent film, an aging leading man takes the "floating weeds" (itinerant actors) of his failing troupe to his hometown in the hopes of achieving triumphs in his professional life but instead suffers personal setbacks. Alex de Grassi's inspired fretboard work, divine arrangements, and delicate fluidity perfectly escort Yasujiro Ozu's contemplative visual style in an exploration of family and love.

Afterglow: The Sisters Euclid
Fronted by Grammy Award-winning Kevin Breit, the musicians of The Sisters Euclid aren't sisters-or brothers for that matter-but they are connected to the bone through luxuriously rough and jaggedly lustrous melodies. You'll be "transfixed" when this group pulls out every conceivable six-string sound (and some seemingly impossible ones) to end this exquisite Ellnora evening (JazzReview.com).

Bachfest
Nigel North, lute
Paul Galbraith, guitar
Brazilian Guitar Quartet

Ellnora takes a classical turn with this celebration of the Baroque master. Nigel North's gentle soul and "unfailingly stylish" playing is a perfect match for the subtle beauty of the lute (Gramophone), while Paul Galbraith brings a "soaring dignity" to Bach's work through his peerless and revolutionary approach (Los Angeles Times). Then the members of the Brazilian Guitar Quartet will add their "irresistibly driving" energy to conclude this tribute (Los Angeles Times).

Bill Frisell's Disfarmer Project: Musical Portraits from Heber Springs
Featuring Viktor Krauss, Greg Leisz, and Eyvind Kang

Known for a quiet demeanor and ever-present humor, Bill Frisell is a six-string giant who's been tapped by DownBeat as Guitarist of the Year five times over since 1998. His Disfarmer Project sprouts from outsider artist Mike Disfarmer's biting and intimate portraits taken in small-town Arkansas during the height of the Great Depression. Disfarmer's shimmering projected images play counterpoint to the unpretentious original music rooted in the heart of the Ozarks.

The Goddess with live music by the Leni Stern Quartet
The harrowing tale of a mother-turned-prostitute set against the backdrop of 1930s Shanghai becomes palpably taut through the "haunting power" of German-born guitarist Leni Stern's original score (Washington Post). Her "beautifully drawn vignettes" musically express the struggle, solace, and hope of director Wu Yonggang's masterful film (Washington Post).

Umphrey's Releases Live DVD & Announces Summer Dates

Umphrey's McGee is gearing up for a busy summer. On June 2nd the band releases their new DVD, Umphrey's McGee - Live.  Recorded during their 2007 performance for PBS's Soundstage, Umphrey's McGee - Live is offers an incredible 13-song set on DVD, including six favorites not shown during the PBS broadcast, which premiered this past February.   Also this summer, Umphrey's McGee celebrates the European release of their highly acclaimed new studio album, Mantis. Look for the band on tour this summer, including a just-announced ROTHBURY appearance, a run of co-bill dates with Matisyahu, two nights with Dave Matthews Band, and even some stops at Chicago's baseball fields (it wouldn't be summer for Umphrey's McGee without baseball!).

umLegendary on the live music circuit, Chicago-based Umphrey's McGee has perfected the art of progressive improvisation.  With swirling guitar textures, multi-faceted arrangements and their signature blend of power and finesse, the sextet brings jamming to a new level.  During the summer of 2007, Umphrey's McGee came home to Chicago to record a special live performance for the award-winning PBS music series Soundstage at WTTW's Grainger Studio. UMPHREY'S McGEE - LIVE features over two hours of dazzling music presented in High-Definition and mixed in 5.1 Surround Sound, plus two bonus tracks (including "Made to Measure" off their most recent studio album Mantis).  A visual showcase of the band's spontaneity and innovative prowess, UMPHREY'S McGEE - LIVE, is a must-own for all music enthusiasts and progressive rock fans, and is available in stores and online for $19.99 SRP.

Also this summer, Umphrey's McGee's skips across the pond with the European release of their new studio album, Mantis. The special 2-disc European edition of Mantis, released by Floating World Records/Evangeline, is now available in Holland, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Scandanavia, and the UK. Mantis is Umphrey's fifth studio release, and their most successful to date.  Here's what U.S. critics had to say:

"...the sleekly constructed tunes...sparkle with a sweetness and soul that's more than the sum of their influences."- Entertainment Weekly

"...meticulous... If complexity is the standard by which it should be judged, Mantis warranted the buildup [of its release]." - New York Times

"A beautiful music gumbo... The band pulls off the trans-genre trick without a hitch."
- Associated Press

"...their slickest and most ambitious tunes yet." - Rolling Stone

Look for Umphrey's McGee on tour this summer, including an unlikely pairing - Notre Dame alums Umphrey's McGee with Hasidic reggae-man Matisyahu, two nights with Dave Matthews Band, plus festival stops including ROTHBURY, All Good, High Sierra and others.

Of personal note for the Chicago natives are their confirmed appearances at Chicago's baseball fields. The band will sing the National Anthem and "God Bless America" at Wrigley Field on Sunday, May 31st, when the Cubs host playoff rivals the Los Angeles Dodgers. Then, on June 8th, the band heads to the South Side for their fifth performance at US Cellular Field for the Chicago White Sox versus the Detroit Tigers. On this official "Umphrey's McGee Fan Appreciation Night," the band will deliver a three-song acoustic set from home plate, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. Need more baseball? Catch Umphrey's McGee's music in a new movie about the Chicago Cubs. Titled "We Believe," the movie will be out in late spring and will premiere at the Chicago Theater on June 12th.

This 10-track gem, available for free download only at www.1320records.com, combines hard-hitting dance beats and booming bass lines with lush electronic landscapes and unforgettable melodies. Big Gigantic, hand picked for 1320 Records by members of STS9, is the latest project from Dominic Lalli (Motet saxophonist/producer) and drummer Jeremy Salken.  The two-man sound-machine of Lalli and Salken showcases an array of gripping compositions by combining elements of a DJ and live band setup while mixing thoughtful melodic ideas with pulsating dance tunes.  Big Gigantic flavors the electronic music scene with powerful sax solos and soulful synth lines on top of super hot beats.

Marco Benevento Announces New Dates

Having just wrapped a ten city east coast tour, Marco Benevento quickly announces a new run of summer club shows and festival appearances in June and July. The Brooklyn-based pianist's upcoming dates will be highlighted by his first ever appearance at Carnegie Hall in New York City on June 20, opening with his trio by invitation of the evening's headliner Jamie Cullum.  Benevento will also play a series of rare solo piano shows, including June 11 at John Zorn's downtown New York City music performance space The Stone and two nights on the west coast opening for Surprise Me Mr. Davis in the week following his trio sets at High Sierra Music Festival on July 2 and 3. Other highlights include an opening slot with S.M.V. at The Keswick Theater in Philadelphia on June 10, a headline slot at The Museum Of Fine Arts in Boston on July 1 and festival appearances at Discover Jazz in Burlington on June 12 and New Mexico Jazz Festival in Albuquerque on July 18.

In the live setting, Benevento fans get to hear him joyously explore the songs from both Me Not Me and its predecessor Invisible Baby with the juxtaposed stances of innocent child-like curiosity and subversive sound manipulation, all while remaining firmly rooted in the jazz trio tradition. New material continually finds its way into Benevento's sets as well, such as the recent debut of the Disney classic "Pink Elephants On Parade" and original tunes, "Greenpoint" and "RISD."

ROCK THE EARTH ANNOUNCES 2009 PLANET DEFENDERS

Colorado-based environmental organization Rock the Earth has announced its 2009 Planet Defender Awards, in conjunction with their national Rock the Earth Day celebration. Grammy-nominated rock band Incubus, Green For All Founder Van Jones, and Jessy Tolkan, Executive Director of the Energy Action Coalition, were selected as the winners in three categories. Planet Defender recipients are nominated by Rock the Earth members and chosen by Rock the Earth's National Volunteer Staff.

This year's winner in the ARTIST category, Grammy-nominated Incubus, funds the Make Yourself Foundation , which has raised over One Million dollars to date. The band funds the foundation by donating a portion of the proceeds generated from touring, record royalties, online auctions of concert tickets and memorabilia, and special events, to support various causes and charities both locally and around the world.  Fueling their tour buses with clean-burning biodiesel, printing posters and flyers on 100-percent post-consumer recycled paper with soy ink, serving organic food backstage, offering fans organic cotton T-shirts and working with venues to increase recycling are just a few of the other steps the band has taken to ensure it stays green.

Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd said: "We are so fortunate to have this amazing opportunity to share music with so many people! And we are very proud to share Earth consciousness with those who come and listen. Thank you very much! And may this be just another rung in the ladder towards a brighter, more aware planet."

Van Jones is thefounder of Green For All.  He is also a TIME Magazine 2008 Environmental Hero and one of Fast Company's 12 Most Creative Minds of 2008. The author of The Green Collar Economy: How One Solution Can Solve Our Two Biggest Problems, Van was recently appointed Special Advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality.  Green For All is a U.S. organization that promotes green-collar jobs and opportunities for the disadvantaged. Its mission is to build an inclusive, green economy - strong enough to resolve the ecological crisis and lift millions of people out of poverty.  A tireless advocate, his commitment to creating "green pathways out of poverty" and expanding the coalition fighting global warming, has earned Van our Planet Defender award as COMMUNITY LEADER.

Jessy Tolkan, Executive Director of the Energy Action Coalition is this year's Planet Defender award winner for GRASSROOTS ACTIVISM. Led by and for young people, the 50 leading organizations, 700 local groups, and hundreds of thousands of supporters that make up the Energy Action Coalition leverage their collective resources to create a clean and equitable energy future. The Energy Action Coalition is winning clean energy victories at the local, state, national, and international level - all while growing and strengthening the clean energy movement among young people from all walks of life in the United States and Canada.

Says Jessy Tolkan, "Young people are building a powerful grassroots movement that is leading the way towards the more sustainable, equitable, and prosperous future we deserve. We started by making our campuses and communities living models of sustainability and possibility. Now we are redefining what is politically possible in order to pass bold federal climate and energy legislation this year."

This year's Planet Defenders join last year's winners: Dave Matthews Band; Author and businessman Andrew Winston of Winston Eco-Strategies and Karen Cragnolin, Executive Director of Riverlink- as we continue to honor those individuals we feel embody Rock the Earth's drive to Defend the Planet One Beat at a Time .  Each Planet Defender recipient will receive a one-of-a-kind award collectively created by artists Joe Benvenuto, Jason Garrett and Chico Raskey (Chico Artglass).

Bill Kreutzmann Announces BK3 Tour Dates

Bill Kreutzmann, Grateful Dead drummer for the band's entire thirty year career, tours this summer with his potent new trio project, BK3.  For the summer run, BK3 features bassist James "Hutch" Hutchinson (Bonnie Raitt) and guitarist Scott Murawski (Max Creek).  This BK3 announcement comes as Bill is wrapping up a highly anticipated Dead reunion tour.  An art exhibit, The Art of Bill Kreutzmann and the Grateful Dead, has popped up in various cities along The Dead tour, including a showing at Café Le Cave in Des Plaines, Illinois on May 4th and 5th.

With BK3, Kreutzmann finds himself lined up and locking into a powerful new wave of musical freedom.  In all its lineup variations (Phish bassist Mike Gordon and Allman Brothers' bassist Oteil Burbridge have both done gigs with BK3) Kreutzmann is thoroughly enjoying making music with such great players, and is driven by musical chemistry that is simply "over the top." This run of shows, which begins on the east coast on May 29th and includes festival stops such as Mountain Jam Festival, Oregon Country Fair, and All Good Music Festival, is the first with Hutch Hutchinson on bass.

The list of currently confirmed tour dates for BK3, Bill Kreutzmann featuring James "Hutch" Hutchinson and Scott Murawski is as follows:

May 29 Port City Music Hall Portland ME
May 30 Toad's Place New Haven CT
May 31 Mountain Jam Festival Hunter NY
June 03 The National Richmond VA
June 04 Cat's Cradle Carrboro NC
June 05 The Music Farm Charleston SC
June 06 Wanee Music Festival Live Oak FL
July 10 Oregon County Fair Veneta OR
July 12 All Good Music Festival Masontown WV

Bill Kreutzmann is a man of many passions, and today in addition to drumming, he is also an artist.  Look for his artwork on display for a very special exhibit this May, when The Dead's tour stops in Chicago. The current exhibit, titled Bill Kreutzmann and the Art of the Grateful Dead, shows on May 4th and 5th at Café Le Cave in Des Plaines, Illinois (across the street from the Allstate Arena, where The Dead play).  In addition to the artwork of Bill Kreutzmann, also featured are a collection of rare signed prints by Jerry Garcia, a selection of Grateful Dead photography by Herb Greene and Baron Wolman, and Grateful Dead poster art by Richard Biffle.

The Art of Bill Kreutzmann and the Grateful Dead

(Across the street from Allstate Arena)
Free and open to the public
For more information visit www.walnutst.com or call 800.562.3387

Kreutzmann's psychedelic and surreal body of work combines his love of photography and digital media. At his first public showing in 2001, during a one man art exhibit at Walnut Street Gallery in Colorado, he received glowing response to his works and praise from collectors. Kreutzmann was first inspired to create art by longtime friend and Grateful Dead band mate Jerry Garcia, who would paint and draw while the band toured. On a day off from performing, Jerry invited Bill to his room to show him how the digital process worked. Bill was hooked. After Jerry's death in 1995 Kreutzmann moved to Hawaii and began expanding on what Jerry taught him, experimenting with 3-D software, animation programs and Photoshop. Today, he equates creating his digital art to playing drums. Sitting at his computer, he just lets his imagination flow. Kreutzmann's deep passion for all things oceanic is evident throughout his art.
