G. Love To Release New Album Produced By The Avett Brothers

G. Love's new album, Fixin’ To Die, is set for release on February 22nd on Brushfire Records. Recorded at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, NC, and produced by Scott and Seth Avett (The Avett Brothers), this new body of work is arguably G. Love’s most sincere and candid work to date. After a chance meeting in Boston last fall, G. Love and The Avett Brothers forged a friendship and bonded over their love of back road blues.  After performing together onstage and discovering their shared musical heritage, G. Love invited Scott and Seth Avett to not only produce his new album, but perform on it as well.
The result is Fixin’ To Die, a collection of G. Love originals, rearranged traditionals, and a classic cover, many simmering for over a decade, all sharing a common goal: to strip away all pretense and capture the original spirit and sound G. Love has cultivated over his entire career but never fully embraced until now. From the ragged jangle of its opener “Milk & Sugar” and floorboard stomp of Bukka White’sFixin’ To Die,” over the loping lilt of “Home” and longing for “Katie Miss,” through the greasy fried “Get Goin’” and moonshine reverb of “Heaven,” to the hip shake hootenanny in Paul Simon’s infamous kiss off “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover,” G. Love and The Avetts deliver a life lesson in how to find a song’s sweet spot.
It was an emotional recording session and I was truly blown away by the level of focus, care and passion Scott & Seth brought to it.  It was a tremendously positive and encouraging experience. This is the most inspired I’ve ever felt making a record,” G. Love said.
As Scott Avett says, “There’s a little bit of this record on all the previous G. Love records, you just had to look for it. This is the record we all knew he should make and he could make, but again, he had to open himself to the core to make it. That’s the difference.”
G. Love will tour the U.S. extensively in support of Fixin’ To Die in 2011.

BROTHERS PAST ANNOUNCES SUMMER DATES

Indie-electronic act BROTHERS PAST has announced a round of summer tour dates, which includes a hometown show at the Electric Factory on Saturday, June 26. The band will also be performing at several festivals along the East Coast, including a high-profile slot at Camp Bisco.

Since returning from a one-year hiatus in early 2009, the band has spent the majority of its time working in the studio, crafting a follow-up to the 2005 release This Feeling’s Called Goodbye (SCI Fidelity Records.) “We’ve recorded a bunch of old songs and a bunch of new songs that Tommy Hamilton and I have written together.” keyboardist Tom McKee said. “All of it will eventually get released one way or another, but some of it probably won’t fit with the record. We’re definitely making progress though, and once we get it out there you’ll be seeing more of us on the road.”

Upon releasing This Feeling’s Called Goodbye, BROTHERS PAST received national attention from fans and critics alike. Morgan Wells of Urb Magazine described it as "...a glimpse into the future of pop music... Brothers Past offers a smooth and believable blend of electronica, rock and pop just original enough to place [This Feeling's Called Goodbye] at the top of a growing pile of genre-bending releases." Steven Rosen in HARP echoed the praise: "There's a future in this kind of music." AUSTIN’S STONE RIVER BOYS FLEX THEIR BRAND OF “COUNTRY FUNK”

After tearing it up in the Lone Star State and across the country for nearly two years, Austin’s Stone River Boys will issue their recording bow Love on the Dial on June 1 via Northampton, Mass.-based Cow Island Music.

The Texas-based quintet features the talents of two well-traveled roots music practitioners — guitarist Dave Gonzalez, formerly a driving force in the Hacienda Brothers and the Paladins, and vocalist Mike Barfield, “The Tyrant of Texas Funk” and onetime leader of the Hollisters. Together, Barfield and Gonzalez have fashioned a gutsy crossbreed of country and R&B they’ve labeled “country funk.”

The Stone River Boys’ sound extends the direction of Gonzalez’ previous band, the Hacienda Brothers, who recorded three studio albums with producer and country-soul legend Dan Penn. Gonzalez was partnered in the Haciendas with Southern California-bred singer Chris Gaffney.

After Gaffney was diagnosed with liver cancer in early 2008, Gonzalez organized a benefit tour for his ailing bandmate, drawing musicians from Austin’s fertile talent pool. One of the principal members of the touring group was Barfield, whom Gonzalez had known since the early ’80s, when he fronted the top Southern California rockabilly band the Paladins and Barfield led the Houston bands the Rounders and the Hollisters.

Gaffney succumbed to cancer in April 2008, but the tour went on. “We went and did it anyway, and sent the money home to his wife Julie,” says Gonzalez. “A buddy of mine had a recording studio up in Nebraska, and while we were out on tour he invited us to come over there. We went in and cut a couple. I said to Barfield, ‘If you want to do a record, I’d love to, man.’ And we just started making a record.”

Barfield says, “We really naturally just started keeping it going. The name of the band came from the first place we rehearsed for that trip, in this little subdivision in deep South Austin, on a street called Stone River.”

Gonzalez recalls, “When I hooked up with Barfield, he had a whole pocket full of tunes. I felt, ‘We need to record these things right away.’ We wrote a couple right on the spot together. He had a few that were unfinished I kind of helped him with. But he wrote the majority of the material on the record.”

Produced by Gonzalez, the album was recorded during several sessions in 2008-09 with a band that included bassists Scott Esbeck (formerly of the way-out instrumental combo Los Straitjackets), Hank Maninger (Hacienda Brothers) and Kevin Smith (Dwight Yoakam), pedal steel whiz Dave Biller, and drummers Justin Jones and Damien Llanes. It extends the seamless fusion of country and soul influences essayed by both the Hacienda Brothers and Barfield, whose over-the-top funk shows at Austin’s Continental Club have become the stuff of legend.

“Chris Gaffney was a great Western singer,” Gonzalez says, “but he also had a knack for singing R&B and soul tunes, too. When I hooked up with Barfield, it was the same thing. He’s a country bro’, but he’s a funky soul bro’, too. In that sense, it does lean toward the way the Hacienda Brothers were. Dan Penn called our music ‘Western soul.’ Mike is real funky; I was telling everybody it’s more country soul. Lately we’ve been calling it ‘country funk,’ because we’ve got a little more funk and a little more up-tempo material in this new band than we did with the Haciendas.”

Barfield sees a natural connection between the sounds of country and R&B: “There’s a picture of Solomon Burke and Joe Tex, and maybe James Brown, and they all had cowboy hats on. A lot of those soul performers will talk about how they used to listen to the Grand Ole Opry. Some R&B songs, especially the ballads, are very close to some of the honky-tonk ballads. To me, it’s all very similar.”

Love on the Dial features 10 original songs written or co-written by Gonzalez, Barfield, Esbeck, and Biller, plus four musically diverse covers — the late Stephen Bruton’s “Bluebonnet Blue”; a cover of Tyrone Davis’ 1968 hit “Can I Change My Mind”; Gerry Goffin and Carole King’s “Take a Giant Step” (recorded by the Monkees, the Rising Sons, and Taj Mahal); and Nashville hitmakers Jerry Foster and Bill Rice’s “Special.”

Gonzalez says of the new unit, “I feel really refreshed. We have a different take on the country side of things. Mike is a Gulf Coast country Texas boy, and at the same time he’s got this funky up-tempo R&B thing going. I’m working a new style of guitar that I’ve always loved, but I’ve never had the opportunity to play it. People are saying they love the new band, and they’re glad to hear me playing a lot of guitar again.”

“This is the first band where I’ve had a full-time steel player,” says Barfield. “That’s something in this band I like — there are so many voicings. It gives you what a horn section might do or an organ might do.”

Gonzalez, Barfield, and Esbeck are joined in the current edition of the Stone River Boys by pedal steel guitarist Gary Newcomb and drummer Mark Patterson, who both played with Esbeck in Austin singer-songwriter Bruce Robison’s group. The band will support the release of Love on the Dial with a summer 2010 tour of the Southwest and the West Coast.

Dierks Bentley Shares Details about UP ON THE RIDGE

Multi-platinum singer/songwriter Dierks Bentley will release his artistically daring, acoustic new album UP ON THE RIDGE on June 8, 2010.  His fifth Capitol Nashville studio project is steeped in the bluegrass and roots music that moved Bentley to become a country musician in the first place.  The lead single and title track, inspired by time spent on a plot of land in rural Tennessee, will be released to country radio on April 12.

“I fell in love with this kind of music the first time I walked into the Station Inn with a fake I.D. at 19 years old … these guys, who were my age, were playing their instruments so hard it knocked your head back.   After that, I never missed a Tuesday night there in almost eight years,” explains Bentley.  “Without the whole bluegrass community taking me in, I would have had no place to start from.  It is my foundation.”

The monumental Kristofferson is here as a guest vocalist as well, along with a slate of today’s best traditional country singers, including Alison Krauss, Vince Gill, Jamey Johnson and Miranda Lambert.  And then there are the players, recruited from the top echelons of bluegrass and acoustic music. Truth & Salvage Co. | Debut Album & Tour With Avett Bros.

TRUTH & SALVAGE CO. will release their debut studio album on May 25 through Silver Arrow/Megaforce Records. Produced by Chris Robinson, the self-titled 12 song collection is centered on the band's soaring four-part harmonies and Americana rock ethos. TRUTH & SALVAGE CO. developed much of the material while opening for The Black Crowes over the course of 2009. With four lead singer/songwriters each contributing to the effort, the tracks range from the clever lyrical style of "Old Piano," the epic bohemian rocker "Jump The Ship," to the band's staple set closer "Pure Mountain Angel."

The six musicians of TRUTH & SALVAGE CO. (vocalist/guitarist Scott Kinnebrew, vocalist/guitarist Tim Jones, vocalist/drummer Bill "Smitty" Smith, vocalist/keyboardist Walker Young, bassist Joe Edel and keyboardist Adam Grace) hail from diverse Southern and Midwestern backgrounds. Prior to their conception, the veteran members had been involved in well-regarded regional bands like Scrappy Hamilton and Old Pike, while performing with acts such as The Moldy Peaches, Ben Folds Five, Jack Johnson, and The Squirrel Nut Zippers, as well as members of My Morning Jacket and Rogue Wave.

All six musicians migrated to Los Angeles, meeting at Hollywood's famous Hotel Café where singer Tim Jones served as the venue's talent booker. First performing together during casual late-night jam sessions, they quickly discovered their chemistry was undeniable. It was on that very stage that TRUTH & SALVAGE CO. was born.

TRUTH & SALVAGE CO. return to Hotel Cafe every Friday night for a four week residency that runs through March 12. In April they'll join The Avett Brothers. Plans for an extended tour around the album's release will be announced shortly.

The Barr Brothers To Tour With The Low Anthem

Brad and Andrew Barr, best known as founding members of revered rock bands The Slip and Surprise Me Mr. Davis, are adding a third act to their repertoire. In the long tradition of brothers who've assumed their surname as a moniker, The Barr Brothers introduce themselves with a string of West Coast and Canadian shows opening for The Low Anthem.

The seeds for The Barr Brothers were first sown five years ago when Brad and Andrew relocated to Montreal. Brad's apartment shared an adjoining wall with harpist Sarah Page. The two would hear each other practicing through the cracks. Sarah's gentle melodies began weaving their way into the music that Brad was writing. A friendship was struck and songs were born. This latest endeavor for Brad and Andrew finds them exploring sounds quieter and more ethereal than anything in their previous work. Final touches are currently being added to a debut recording that will be released later this year.

Brad and Andrew Barr remain equally committed to their other bands, as well. Plans will be announced in the coming weeks for Surprise Me Mr. Davis tour dates and EP release, while work is also underway on the next full-length studio album by The Slip.

The Gibson Brothers' new album in stores Now

Bluegrass duo The Gibson Brothers' talk about the "feel" of their new album, Ring the Bell. "It makes me think of being young and growing up in our small farming community in New York," explains Leigh. "It evokes memories of fellowship with the men who knew my Grandfather Gibson at church on Sunday mornings.  We'd see folks at the hardware store or the bank during the week and then see them all again at church each Sunday."

gibsonEric agrees that there is an elated intensity to the album. "There is a lot of joy in the music. I think you can tell in listening that we poured our hearts out - not that you can't tell on our other records - but the joy in our playing and singing. At the same time, it feels like our most hard-driving bluegrass album; there's more thump on it, a bigger sounding record than we've ever had."

That bigger sound comes from having the whole band - Mike Barber (upright bass), Clayton Campbell (fiddles), and Joe Walsh (mandolin guitar), and guest Mike Witcher from Missy Raines & The New Hip (resonator guitar) - playing on every track. "I'm very proud of how the band served each song," agrees Eric.  "There's not a lot of 'look at me' acrobatic playing.  It's more 'let's support the vocals, let's support the message of the song, the feel of the song'."

While Eric admits to loving all of the songs on the album, he cites the title track as one of his favorites. "It feels so uplifting to me," he says "and I love my brother's harmony on it." Leigh adds, "This song is a call to action for coming together in a world that sometimes seems intent on tearing itself apart. More than just nostalgia, it's a song about love of fellow man."

Produced by the two brothers plus bassist Mike Barber, Ring the Bell features six originals (including a co-write with Bob DiPiero) and new songs by Shawn Camp/Paul Kennerly, Chet O'Keefe, Joe Newberry, and Marshall Warwick, and a relatively obscure Tom Petty song, "Angel Dream." Staying true to their upstate New York farm boy roots, The Gibson Brothers recorded two agricultural-themed songs for this record, one written by Leigh ("Bottomland") and one by Eric ("Farm Of Yesterday"). "Bottomland", originally recorded for an unreleased Skaggs record, is given an old-timey treatment here and touches on the lives of sharecroppers. "Farm of Yesterday" was written as a tribute to their parents and the family dairy farm that belonged to the Gibson family from 1865-2000. Eric showed the song to Leigh who was moved but said, "it might be too personal to put on the record."  Eric replied, "Laying it out there could be the difference between a good record and a great record." "Farm Of Yesterday" is Leigh's favorite song on the album: "I told Eric he'd now written one Haggard would sing."

Of the album as a whole says Eric "I think everything about it - from the album cover to the songs - is an attention getter and I hope folks will notice. Brother bluegrass acts are almost as old bluegrass itself, but I feel like we've carved out a special niche for ourselves. We've hung in there and toughed it out - we're still in our 30's but I feel like we're bluegrass lifers."
