As a music journalist for a decade and a half, I see a lot of live music. But every once in a while, I catch a concert that gives me a special feeling of knowing that I have seen music history and something sonically special. This was one of those moments. A few years ago here, it was Lana Del Rey who captivated her sold out show. This summer, it was her male musical soul mate Father John Misty.

Monterey’s inaugural First City Festival came and went this weekend in a flurry of sunshine, carnival rides, and nonstop music (accompanied by some seriously impressive light shows). With a solid lineup of newer and established indie bands and a prime location between Los Angeles and San Francisco, chances are this won’t be the last year for First City.

Great music, great venue, great weather. The Newport Folk Festival has succeeded in reinventing itself in recent years, adopting a broader definition of “folk” that has allowed for the inclusion of a wide range of what might be called “folk-inspired” bands, while still paying homage to its acoustic guitar-strumming roots.

Trudging into the Independent on yet another cold, appropriately misty San Francisco night, I was quite honestly exhausted and wishing I was in my bed. While I had been wholly captivated by Father John Misty at Outside Lands last month...my bed was so warm. However, I made the adult decision to stay and enjoy the show. Thank God I did.

The fog didn’t let up for day two of San Francisco’s Outside Lands festival, and neither did the crowds. It seemed that no matter where you stood, there was a constant stream of people passing you either way. I set off to play fangirl today, and I succeeded.
