Grateful Dead

While thankfulness is inherent to a Deadhead’s makeup, oftentimes, we don’t stop and fully let our gratitude overwhelm us. The Skull & Roses Music Festival in Ventura, California this April 2nd-5th will easily remedy that. Offering a most wonderful setting in a most sacred spot, Skull & Roses provides the perfect opportunity to allow our appreciation to soar. I sense the familiar thrill rise within me as I digest this year's lineup— Billy & the Kids, Oteil & Friends, Jeff Chimenti, Steve Kimock, and George Porter Jr.

Today they pay tribute to the Grateful Dead with the release of their video version of “Brokedown Palace.” The song will be available at all streaming platforms on Friday, February 28.

The Aggie Theatre and the home town crowd of Fort Collins welcomed the second show of Dead Floyd’s Shine On Your Crazy Fingers Tour with open arms last night. Soon after the two opening acts completed their sets, Dead Floyd took the stage and never gave it back. From the opening notes of Help On The Way, the evening vibe was set.

During the mid-1970s, the Grateful Dead saga was unfolding like a Greek classic. The Sisyphean Wall Of Sound had nearly broken the band. From it spawned a Medusa head of countless side projects, all deliciously fruitful but woefully not the same as the whole. The chorus lay in wait, pondering the reemergence of their heroes, and wondering if "THE LAST ONE" had really been it...

One of the highest moments in Grateful Dead history came on September 16, 1978, in front of the Great Pyramid of Gizeh, when a rhythm and percussion choir led by Mickey Hart’s friend Hamza El Din opened for the band’s second set  by playing his song “Ollin Arageed.” As they sang and percussed, the moon went into eclipse.  One by one, the band members drifted on to the stage and joined them, eventually going into “Fire on the Mountain.”  It was pure magic.
