Porter Batiste Stoltz w/ Special Guest Page McConnell to Release 'MOODOO'

photo courtesy of Madison House- for the Grateful Web

George Porter Jr., Russell Batiste Jr., and Brian Stoltz are part of the rich history that is New Orleans' musical ancestry. Today, Porter Batiste Stoltz announce the hard hitting trio's first-ever live release MOODOO, featuring special guest keyboardist Page McConnell (Phish) sitting in on select songs.

The recording offers highlights from an epic November 2, 2007 gig at Burlington, Vermont's Club Metronome, where McConnell joined PBS on stage for part of their performance. Documentation of the evening has been highly sought after by fan communities, yet there have been no known recordings of the show - until now.

MOODOO, which will be available at retail stores and online beginning September 30, documents an evening ripe with musical mojo.  What else could happen when New Orleans' funk royalty blends utterly with one of Vermont's finest? Page McConnell and Russell Batiste have a musical history - playing together in Vida Blue, a band that Page formed in 2001. Most recently, Page also performed with PBS at the 2008 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on the Acura Stage (main).

In conjunction with the release of MOODOO, Porter Batiste Stoltz featuring Page McConnell will perform select shows this fall.  Confirmed dates include:

September 24  Revolution Hall Troy, NY

GATHERING OF THE TRIBE

Wow, it's hard to believe that it's August already and the shows just keep on coming! With a summer that included Bonnaroo, All Good Festival, Mountain Jam, 10,000 Lakes Festival and most recently Gathering of the Vibes, we've been a busy bunch. At GOTV, the band offered a thunderous take on the 11/6/77 set from Binghamton, NY. Donna Jean Godchaux herself joined DSO for a few songs as did The Zen Tricksters' founder and guitarist Jeff Mattson. As a birthday tribute to Jerry Garcia, DSO closed out the night with an extended "Don't Let Go" > "We Bid You Good Night" featuring both Donna Jean and DSO's own Lisa Mackey - what a great time! Whether you were able to join us there or at another festival or club show, thank you for making it such an amazing summer!

HEADING WEST

After putting the finishing touches on this year's festival season, DSO will be heading out west for a series of shows to take us into the Fall. Highlights include three nights in San Francisco as well as shows in Tulsa, Dallas, Austin, Sacramento and many more. See where DSO is stopping near you and get your tickets ahead of the rush at DSO Ticketing: http://dso.inticketing.com/.

Umphrey's McGee Coming to Colorado

photos by Phil Emma- for the Grateful Web

Umphrey's McGee released Jimmy Stewart 2007 this past June.  This digital-only release features the band's best improvisations of the past year.  Jimmy Stewart 2007 is a limited edition release, first available at the Bonnaroo Music Festival and thereafter available digitally through UMLive.net and itunes.  Plus the UM download will offer up a companion piece podcast offering an additional 70 minutes of material that did not make the Jimmy Stewart 2007 album.

Jimmy Stewart 2007 is an ambitious effort to compile a year's worth of the band's inspired improvisations into two seamless 70-minute "mixtapes."  At over 100 shows a year, Umphrey's McGee delves into these spontaneous compositions, engaging their fans as they feed off each other's energy.  A Zappa-inspired language of body gestures and hand-signals allow the band to break structure while creating an entirely new arrangement.  As Umphrey's McGee's continues to evolve, each live performance showcases the band's "Jimmy Stewart" approach to structured improvisation.

Also, Umphrey's McGee released a digital-only live series titled CompendiUM.  Available through itunes and UMLive.net, CompendiUM offers live recordings of the band's favorite ten shows of 2007.  Included in the series are the band's Boulder, Colorado show from March 6th, their Portland, Oregon show on June 7th, and the Chicago Show from December 30th, among others.

In the ever-changing music industry, Umphrey's McGee has proven adaptive and inventive both in music and in business.  Through grassroots promotions, an intensive touring schedule, open taping policies and music sharing among fans, Umphrey's McGee provides a new approach to media, entertainment, and music distribution.  Tape trading in the jam-band scene was one of the earliest examples of free music distribution and Umphrey's has harnessed the internet's momentum to spread their music far and wide.  With an extensive variety of downloadable formats, UMlive.net offers more music than any other indie label with download stores, and Umphrey's McGee basically gives away the equivalent to 40,000 CDs each month through their podcast program.  The band has also been releasing soundboard recordings at the end of each night's concert for immediate sale since 2001 and typically sells anywhere from 120 to 180 CD-Rs per night.  Their unique approach to online and digital distribution, paired with word of mouth buzz, has helped Umphrey's McGee sell out shows nationwide while keeping their fans their top priority.

Bonerama Hits Colorado

Bonerama at the 2008 10KLF - photo by Janie Franz- for the Grateful Web

When Bonerama struts onstage with its four-trombone frontline, you can guess it's not quite like any rock 'n' roll band you've seen. When they tear into some vintage New Orleans funk, there's no questioning from which city these guys hail. And when those 'bones start ripping into Hendrix and Led Zeppelin licks, all stylistic bets are off.

Bonerama carries the brass-band concept to places unknown.  Hailed by Rolling Stone's David Fricke as "The ultimate in brass balls" last Fall, the band served as the House Band for the live all-star comedy event COMIC RELIEF.  The 2006 event, which featured a long list of A-talent including hosts Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams, was recorded live from Ceasar's Palace last November. Recently, Bonerama snagged the coveted "Best Rock Band" honor from the 2007 Big Easy Awards.

Since live performance is what Bonerama is all about, it's no coincidence that their third album, Bringing It Home, is also their third consecutive live disc. It also testifies to the amount of tightening-up the band's done in recent years. Joining another stack of Bonerama originals are covers ranging from the Meters and George Porter Jr. to the Beatles (two from the White Album, no less) to Thelonious Monk. And when they take on Led Zeppelin's "The Ocean" - with trombones doing the familiar backing vocals along with the big guitar riff - you can practically hear the audience's jaws dropping.

The current list of confirmed Bonerama tour dates is as follows:

July 29 Fox Theater Boulder CO
July 30 The Eldo Crested Butte CO
July 31 Snowmass Village Snowmass CO
August 01 Cervantes Denver CO
August 02 Copper Triangle Bike Race Copper Mountain CO
August 14 Gerald Veasleys Jazz Base Reading PA
August 15 Chenango Blues Festival Norwich NY
August 16 Hot August Blues Festival Cockeyville MD
August 17 Town Point Summer Concert Series Norfolk VA
August 20 GottRocks Greenville SC
August 21 Smith's Old Bar Atlanta GA
August 22 The Nick Birmingham AL
August 23 Two Stick Market Oxford MS
August 29 On The Waterfront Rockford IL
August 30 Detroit International Jazz Festival Detroit MI
August 31 The Livery Benton Harbor MI
September 12 Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival Fredericton NB
September 26 Skippers Smokehouse Tampa FL
September 27-28 Hollywood Beach Clambake Festival Hollywood FL
October 03 The Green Room Music Club Covington LA
October 05 Gretna Hertitage Festival Gretna LA
October 10 The Loki Festival Millers River NC
October 25 VooDoo Music Experience New Orleans LA
November 08 Berlin Jazz Festival Berlin Germany
January 04 Jam Cruise 7 Ft. Lauderdale FL

More dates will be announced.

Even in a city that doesn't play by the rules, New Orleans' Bonerama is something different. They're not a traditional brass band, but they've got brass to spare-even with no trumpets or saxes in sight. Bonerama features a dizzying display of trombone talent; four trombones, to be exact. Band leaders Mark Mullins and Craig Klein (of Harry Connick's band) shelf any jazz subtlety for Bonerama, opting instead for heavy funk, rock 'n' roll, and pure horn muscle.  Mullins and Klein are joined by fellow boners Steve Suter and Rick Trolsen, imaginative and dynamic sousaphone player Matt Perrine and edgy experimental guitarist Bert Cotton. The band also features a rotating cast of New Orleans' finest drummers, including Russell Batiste, Stanton Moore, Eric Bolivar, and Terence Higgins.

Following the enormous success of 2007's Country Ghetto, JJ Grey & Mofro hit the studio this summer and have emerged with a new album proving to be an instant classic.  ORANGE BLOSSOMS (August 26, Alligator Records) is a collection of down-home, soul-shaking music produced by long-time cohort Dan Prothero.  The album features 12 songs (including 11 Grey originals) inspired by Grey's life experiences and visionary observations. With long-time friend and guitarist Daryl Hance, bassist/organist Adam Scone, drummer Anthony Cole, and the Hercules Horns of saxophonist Art Edmaiston and trumpeter Dennis Marion, Grey moves effortlessly from gospel-tent fervor to Southern-fried rockers to deeply emotional soul. ORANGE BLOSSOMS is a groove-driven masterpiece fueled by JJ's gritty, smoldering vocals and intense, funk-infused guitar and keyboard work.

FENNARIO – SONGS BY JERRY GARCIA & ROBERT HUNTER

FENNARIO – SONGS BY JERRY GARCIA & ROBERT HUNTER (out August 19 on Iris Records), an album  that pays tribute to the Grateful Dead's principal songwriters.  Joseph previously released a critically acclaimed American music album and also has written album tracks for friend and fan Bonnie Raitt.
