Blues Traveler's New Album 'North Hollywood Shootout,' Streets 8/26

John Popper- for the Grateful Web

After selling ten million records worldwide, six gold or platinum albums, and 2,000 shows in front of three million fans, Grammy Award-winning Blues Traveler ventured out of its creative comfort zone to explore some adventurous new horizons for its new album (and Verve Forecast label debut). The resultant North Hollywood Shootout is a landmark in the quintet's large and widely loved body of work, demonstrating the enduring strengths of the band's songwriting while capturing the spontaneous spirit of their legendary live shows.

According to frontman and harmonica slinger John Popper, "We're still trying to cultivate what we're individually good at into something that's bigger than the sum of its parts. When we're all playing and it's working, it becomes this separate entity, and that's still the thing that we're chasing."

North Hollywood Shootout — produced by Grammy Award winner David Bianco, whose diverse resume includes work with the likes of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Ozzy Osbourne, Mick Jagger and Teenage Fanclub — draws its curious name from the fact that the band recorded the album in the NoHo district of Los Angeles. Street date is August 26, 2008.

Such memorable tunes as the uplifting road-trip anthem "You, Me and Everything," the playfully romantic "Love Does," and the elegant, evocative "Orange in the Sun" boast infectious melodic hooks while showcasing the interactive instrumental chemistry that originally endeared the band to its rabidly devoted fan base.

The new material also makes a strong case for the introspective side that's always been a key element of lyricist Popper's persona. The heart-tugging lyrics of the opening track, "Forever Owed," were inspired by the singer's recent USO trip to Afghanistan and Iraq, while the poignant "Borrowed Time" is a bittersweet meditation on mortality and transience, inspired both by the recent passing of bandmates Chan and Tad Kinchla's father and by Popper's feelings for his beloved and aging dog. The album's biggest sonic curveball is its closing track, "Free Willis, Ruminations from Behind Uncle Bob's Machine Shop." The six-minute spoken-word  sound collage finds the band jamming over an insistent drum beat, while actor Bruce Willis, a longtime friend and fan, delivers a colorful freeform monologue/rant.

As guitarist Chan Kinchla explains, "On the last few records, we concentrated so much on the crafting of the songwriting and arrangements that we started losing some of the live spontaneity that the five of us created onstage. So on this album, instead of doing the usual pre-production process, where we really worked out the songs before taking them into the studio, we decided to go straight into the studio and do songwriting there. We recorded all the parts as we were working them out, and then built the songs from there."

North Hollywood Shootout also found the band ceding more authority to Popper to create the melodies that carry his lyrics. "The main thing that we wanted to emphasize on this record was melody, and I think that aspect of it turned out very well," Popper states. "The guys took a real risk in trusting me to run with that."

"I think you have to be constantly reinventing things and discovering new aspects of what you do in order to keep things fresh," Kinchla adds. "This lineup (John Popper, Chan Kinchla, Brendan Hill, Tad Kinchla and Ben Wilson) has been together for eight years. We've spent a lot of time sorting out everyone's role and learning how to listen to each other and get out of each other's way. It's funny, but right now the band is feeling a lot like it did in the early days, when we were just playing for the sake of playing, and we were hitting on all cylinders and the communication was fresh and alive. The shows have been really kicking, and the new songs have been going over great."

Rocky Mountain Grateful Dead Revue @ Boulder Theater

Rob Eaton of DSO - photos by Phil Emma- for the Grateful Web

Rocky Mountain Grateful Dead Review is the apex of Colorado's vast cadre of uniquely talented and "Deadicated" musicians. Over the years, many regional bands have offered up their best efforts toward keeping alive the unparalleled music and party spirit of the phenomenon that was the Grateful Dead. From this cross-pollenating web of specialized tribute musicians has shaken out a pool of players deemed most apt, by popular opinion and support, to offer the truest interpretation of the essence of that legendary band.

Unlike many "put a quarter in the jukebox" tribute bands, Rocky Mountain Grateful Dead Review delivers a caliber of genuineness, spontaneity and artistic integrity by weaving their own measure of "X factor creativity" into the songs, jams and transitional interludes.  Chemistry, both personal and musical, is an important ingredient of the musical high generated by RMGDR. This chemistry exists both among the band members themselves and between the band and their all-important audiences. It is a closed-loop of positive energy that feeds on itself and tends to elevate gyrating bones off the floor.

Perfect harmony with this chemistry emanates when the band is joined by their good friend from Dark Star Orchestra, Rob Eaton. The consummate Grateful Dead tribute musician, Rob is proudly presented as special guest of Rocky Mountain Grateful Dead Review at the Boulder Theater. Don't miss what is sure to be a very special evening!

As Umphrey's McGee's sound continues to evolve, each live performance is increasingly a showcase for their "Jimmy Stewart" approach to progressive improvisation, which they utilize as a breeding ground for new material. Fan favorites "In the Kitchen", "Intentions Clear", "Bridgeless", and many more have come from such sessions.  In fact, the newest original to the Umphrey's McGee live repertoire is "Waist Down", a song with firm roots in the Jimmy Stewart 2007track “Eat - 2.17.07 - San Francisco".

Umphrey's is a band always on the cusp of fresh technology and music distribution, and the trendsetting Umphrey's McGee Podcast serves up two 75-minute sets of live UM each month to its 20,000 subscribers. On June 10th, the Podcast offered it's 66th broadcast, a Jimmy Stewart 2007 companion piece of an extra CD's worth of material from the cutting room.  That past weekend weekend, a limited pressing of 2,000 Jimmy Stewart 2007 CDs were available at the Bonnaroo Music Festival, with remaining copies to be distributed at shows and though the band's online store.  Beginning June 17, the record is available digitally via iTunes and UMLive.net.

Also this month, Umphrey's McGee debut a digital-only live series called CompendiUM.  The first ten releases in this iTunes series are comprised of the band's favorite ten shows of 2007, showcasing the incredibly diverse range of the Umphrey's McGee live experience.

photos by Amanda Bell- for the Grateful Web

Coming from the heart of Alabama, BoomBox has announced a two-month tour spanning from the South, Midwest, into the Mountain West and back again. The musical journey into sound and revelation will feature performances at Camp Jam, Asheville's Music Jamboree and an appearance in July at the brand new Rothbury Festival.

Featuring producer-DJ Russ Randolph and singer-songwriter-guitarist Zion Rock Godchaux, BoomBox blends danceable rhythms, hypnotic mixes, and shimmering guitar phrases with an unspoken vibe. Known for the cathartically smooth vocals of the young Godchaux, the BoomBox sound incorporates a unique edge on the trip-hop genre while meshing decades of musical history into one complete package. It's no doubt, wherever BoomBox sets up to play a dance party is sure to follow.

With an eye for creating and building a conscious community, the duo strives to get involved with local non-profits to help benefit each area they visit. During this tour the band will be working to provide support for both Conscious Alliance and The Basics Fund.

New Trey Anastasio Release + preview track

album will benefit the Seven Below Arts Initiative- for the Grateful Web

Original Boardwalk Style, a live album from Trey Anastasio and the Undectet, will be released on June 10th on Trey's own Rubber Jungle Records. Proceeds from the sale of the album will benefit the Seven Below Arts Initiative, established by Trey in 2006 to foster artistic development and support arts education in the state of Vermont.

The album was recorded at the House of Blues in Atlantic City, NJ on December 30th and 31st of 2006, coming at the end of the band's holiday tour. The two shows marked the culmination of a long year of touring and growth as what began as a six-piece sextet in the beginning of the year had progressed into a full-force eleven member Undectet.

The raw energy of a well-oiled band at the top of its game permeated the set as the composer/vocalist/guitarist led The Undectet - comprised of Tony Hall (bass, vocals), Ray Paczkowski (keyboards), Jeff Sipe (drums), Christina Durfee (vocals, synthesizer), Jennifer Hartswick (vocals, trumpet), Peter Apfelbaum (saxophone, flute), Russell Remington (saxophone, flute), Jeff Cressman (trombone), Dave Grippo (saxophone) and Cyro Baptista (percussion) - through electrifying big band arrangements of his classic songs, replete with big horns and dazzling Brazilian percussive stylings.

Original Boardwalk Style features over 75 minutes of music, remixed from the multitrack masters by Trey and Ben Collette at Rubber Jungle Studios and mastered by Fred Kevorkian at Kevorkian Mastering. In addition to CD and digital download formats, the album will be available as a double-gatefold, audiophile grade 180-gram LP Vinyl pressing.

The album is now available for pre-order as CD and Vinyl Trey's online store as well as digital audio downloads (in both MP3 and FLAC formats) at LivePhish.com. All pre-orders will automatically be entered to win a professionally printed photo - signed by Trey and esteemed photographer Jeff Kravitz - of the band on stage at the House of Blues. Color corrected by Jennifer Brown, it will be framed in barn board crafted by Lars Fisk, a creative contributor to The Barn's Artist-in-Residence program. Ten runners-up will receive autographed copies of the vinyl.
