Keller Williams

A BackYard Barbeque with Keller Williams

Richmond, Virginia is one of those southern cities where one can ‘feel’ the history.. It’s everywhere you look.. There is Monument Avenue, with statues of the heroes -- from a Civil War that is still described by some old timers, as ‘the recent unpleasantness.’ There is the statue to the great African-American tap-dancer and performer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson.

Later this month, the enigmatic Keller Williams will release his 756th album. Okay, that number may be off by a few.

Keller Williams Announces "Keller on Your Couch"; new album out May 25

Keller Williams releases his first-ever all-covers collection, amusingly titled Thief, on May 25, 2010. Recorded with the Keels—husband and wife duo Larry and Jenny KeelThief includes songs originally written and recorded by as wildly diverse an assemblage as anyone’s ever likely to dream up.

Now, with the announcement of his “Keller On Your Couch” contest, Keller and the Keels are on the lam, and they have no idea where they'll end up. The reward for assisting in their capture is a 90 minute private acoustic performance by Keller and The Keels in the winner's living room for them and up to 49 of their friends.

Those who purchase Keller’s new album, Thief, at Keller’s Official Merch Store by August 31, 2010 will be automatically entered into the contest. Those who pre-order Thief through www.kellerwilliams.net before its May 25, 2010 release date will receive two entries into the contest.

Thief offers up Keller-versions of songs by an [almost] unthinkable collection of artists: from Amy Winehouse (“Rehab”) to the Grateful Dead (“Mountains of the Moon”), the Butthole Surfers (“Pepper”) to Kris Kristofferson (“Don’t Cuss That Fiddle,” which opens the album, and “The Year 2003 Minus 25,” which closes the album). The set is filled out with tunes by Ryan Adams, the Presidents of the United States of America, the Raconteurs, Patterson Hood, Danny Barnes, Cracker, the Yonder Mountain String Band and Marcy Playground. All over the place, indeed, but that’s the way Williams likes it. And in his hands it all makes sense—like everything he’s ever touched, whether from his own pen or someone else’s, it all becomes Keller Williams' music.

Keller is on tour this summer - at solo shows, with The Keels, and even for a run of gigs as vocalist/guitarist in The Rhythm Devils, the project by Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann and his partner percussionist Mickey Hart.

Keller Williams | The Egg @ The Heart Theatre | Review

Long before you and I ever went to see our first concert and even before our parents went to see their first, live music performances appealed to a different sense. In the time of the Greek tragedies, the rise of opera and even in the fledgling years of Broadway, the patron’s vision was the equal of his auditory sense. Theatrical music was the medium through which many of the most famous musical compositions were first delivered to an audience.

Keller Williams is Albany Bound

kellerThe weather in the North East iis warming up and so is the live music scene, as Keller Williams is set to bring his enigmatic one man show to The Egg, Albany’s world renowned musical hotspot, inside of The Hart Theatre this Friday, March 20th. Keller, who has toured as a part of a bluegrass trio (Keller & The Keels) a jamband super group (Keller Williams and the MDS), a Grateful Dead tribute band (Grateful Grass) and even led The String Cheese Incident at some of their most memorable shows is returning to what he does best. A multi-instrumental virtuoso, Williams is able to loop two, three, hell- a symphony’s worth of instruments until, if you closed your eyes, you would be sure that he was not alone at all. Rather your ears would tell you that he had been joined by dozens of other performers.

But that is the genius that is Keller Williams. With the help of longtime soundman Lou Gosain, William’s is able to release all of the accompaniment he hears in his head on the crowd of eager listeners. Rarely in the jam scene can such a dichotomy occur- one man’s vision explored by the sound of countless players. And The Egg, known for its odd egg-like shape and near perfect acoustics, will be the perfect compliment for William’s show. But don’t fret if you miss out on one of the few remaining tickets for this Friday’s show. Keller is continuing to meander through the northeast before looping back down south. Check out kellerwilliams.net for more details. See you at the show!

Keller Williams on Tour this Fall

Keller @ the Fox - photo by Sam Holloway- for the Grateful Web

Keller Williams has built a career on his uncanny ability to captivate a packed house-all by himself.  So why now, after fifteen-years as a solo artist, is he releasing a live album-simply titled, Live-with three other names on the cover? It turns out that since he first picked up a guitar, this troubadour has wanted to front a band.

On Live (September 16, 2008 / SCI Fidelity Records), Keller taps into the world-class talent of Keith Moseley (bass - The String Cheese Incident), Gibb Droll (guitar - Marc Broussard, Brandi Carlile), and Jeff Sipe (drums - Aquarium Rescue Unit, Leftover Salmon). The musical horsepower of four friends playing together on stage proves stronger than even Keller had dreamed. Recorded at select live shows during a winter 2008 tour, and featuring seventeen tracks that span Keller's career, Live is a testament to how a band, with the right chemistry and chops, can take a song to places even the writer couldn't have imagined.

"What a treat after so many years of being in control," Williams says. "The band has a knack for hanging a sharp left that I don't see coming." As the principal singer/songwriter, Keller may be driving this musical train, but he doesn't always know where it's headed. Williams puts unyielding faith in Moseley, Droll, and Sipe's ability to sustain the conversation. And, as with every live recording worth a damn, the audience is an integral part. On Live the crowd sizzles with energy; they know they're witnessing something special.

Catch Keller Williams featuring Keith Moseley, Gibb Droll, & Jeff Sipe on tour this fall, making stops on the West Coast for the first time ever.
