Otis Taylor Examines the Darker Dimensions of Love

No one ever accused blues singer/composer/multi-instrumentalist Otis Taylor of overindulging in the happier aspects of the human condition. His songs are often peopled with characters whose emotional landscape — no matter how raw or dark — is laid bare for all to experience, and the story is often less than pretty.

otis taylorBut if love — in any or all of its joyous and painful variations — is somewhere amid that confusing emotional swirl, he’ll go there too. The result will by no means be syrupy ballads obsessing over romantic love. Instead, Taylor’s love songs take a hard, realistic look at the relative benefits and costs of what is perhaps the most unnerving of forces within the human heart.

Taylor’s new recording, Pentatonic Wars and Love Songs, throws a light on the complexities of love in all of its forms. The album is set for June 23, 2009, release on Telarc International, a division of Concord Music Group. In addition to Taylor’s trademark haunting vocals and simple but stirring guitar riffs — a combination often referred to as trance blues — the album also features guest appearances by Irish blues-rock guitarist Gary Moore (previously heard on Taylor’s Definition of a Circle in 2007) and jazz/hip-hop pianist Jason Moran.

Within these songs of love are tales of tragedy and loss, misunderstanding and deception — but there’s often a glimmer of hope as well. “That’s just my nature,” says Taylor. “I may write love songs, but they aren’t always going to be happy and pretty. Look at songs like ‘Teen Angel’ or ‘Ode To Billy Joe.’ Those are love songs, but they aren’t exactly happy. So why shouldn’t my songs be considered love songs?”

The set opens with the pensive “Looking for Some Heat,” the story of a man looking for some love and sunshine. Moran and cornetist Ron Miles provide enough subtle riffs to serve as counterpoint to Taylor’s more edgy vocals. “I met Jason in Germany once, but I didn’t really pay that much attention to him at first,” says Taylor. “Then I saw him in concert in West Virginia, and I was really amazed. I wanted to get him on one of my records.”

The melancholy “Sunday Morning” features lead vocals by Cassie Taylor (Otis’ 21-year-old daughter), backed by Gary Moore’s understated but potent flamenco guitar lines. The power of the song lies in the simplicity of the lyrics, as they draw attention to the images and rituals of what is often the most introspective day of the week.

“Lost My Guitar” was inspired by the tragic true story of Emma K. Walsh, whose preschool-age daughter was killed in a car accident in Boulder, Colorado, in 1974. The singer in the song laments the loss of his guitar, but “the guitar is a metaphor for the child,” says Taylor.

“I’m Not Mysterious,” a tale of puppy love between two eight-year-olds, seems innocent enough, but the difference in race between the two children makes for an undercurrent of tensions. “That’s something I’ve lived, so I decided to write about it,” says Taylor, who grew up in Denver in the ‘50s and ‘60s. “When I was a little kid, this little girl sent me a note telling me she loved me. So I followed her home to see where she lived. Then one time I visited her at her house. That was when I had to stop seeing her.”

otisThe hypnotic “Mama’s Best Friend,” sung by Cassie and fueled by the odjembe drumming of percussionist Fara Tolno, is a glimpse into the life of Taylor’s mother — a sort of follow-up chapter to “Mama’s Selling Heroin,” a track from his 2004 recording, Double V. “My mother was gay, and she eventually hooked up with one of her girlfriends,” he explains. “My father left and went to California. I put these stories out there for my children.”

The closer, “If You Hope,” is a story about a ghost who wants his lover to join him in the afterlife. “If you listen to the very end, you hear it build up beautifully,” says Taylor, “sort of like a grand finale to the entire album. It brings the various elements of my music together — the jazz, the blues-rock, all of it.”

Pentatonic Wars and Love Songs follows Taylor’s 2008 opus Recapturing the Banjo, an album that celebrated the African roots of an instrument whose origins have been largely obscured by its subsequent associations with Appalachian folk music.

“This is a different kind of endeavor for me,” he says of the new recording. “I found myself saying, ‘What can I do after making a banjo album? What will people want to listen to?’ My answer was love songs. I’m doing things here that I didn’t have the opportunity to do on previous albums, things that people wouldn’t normally expect from me, compared to what I’ve done so far. I think it’s one of my best works because it has such unusual elements.”

Tom Brosseau Announces U.S. Tour Dates

Right on the heels of Tom Brosseau's European tour with PJ Harvey and John Parish, as well as playing select dates with Mice Parade, Brosseau is announcing a U.S. tour in support of his June 23rd FatCat release, Posthumous Success. This new buoyant and well-crafted album is a huge stylistic shift away from the spare acoustic arrangements of his previous releases though Brosseau's earnest wit and captivating, vibrato-soaked voice is unchanged. These songs - and selections from Brosseau's catalog - will be fully realized live by the trio of Brosseau, album co-producer and multi-instrumentalist Ethan Rose, and vocalist/instrumentalist Shelley Short. The ensemble will bring Brosseau's live sound closer to the full-band richness captured on Posthumous Success than previous solo outings. All tour dates are listed below.

Additionally, we are giving out a free mp3 of "You Don't Know My Friends" off of this new album. Download/listen to the song here:

Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers @ Boulder Theater

Legendary rock and roll revolutionaries Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers (RCPM) bring their high-energy nationwide tour to Boulder Theater (2032 14th St.) with Railbenders on Friday, June 19, 2009 at 9:00 p.m.  Tickets ($21.50) for the 21+ show are on sale now and can be purchased at Boulder Theater and online by visiting here.

RCPM’s 2009 Tour has included stops at the acclaimed Tempe Music Festival April 3, The Pima County Fair in Tucson April 26 and will include the annual band-hosted celebration of life and music, Circus Mexicus in Rocky Point, Mexico, June 6.  With an intriguing array of unrivaled songs (laced with flavorful melodies, etched-in-your-brain hooks and inventive lyrics), RCPM injects a signature brand of high-energy showmanship into each of its live performances.  Fans of the band know there’s nothing quite like a live Peacemakers show.

Glow In The Dark, RCPM’s new live web-only release, captures the spirit and vigor of RCPM live.  The band once again loaded their guitars, drum sticks and amps onto the tour bus and traveled thousands of miles across North America in ‘08, delivering the kind of high energy rock show night after night that has become a Peacemakers' trademark. Music fans can experience the energy and excitement from one of the standout shows of the year with Glow In The Dark, which was recorded at Mexicali Blues in Teaneck, New Jersey.  To commemorate this memorable performance, RCPM is raising one more round with fans to celebrate with the unconventional release of the new live album.

Beginning on February 2, fans were given a unique opportunity to not only hear the show, but to watch the band perform a different song, both from the RCPM and Refreshments catalogs, each week for a consecutive 14 weeks. Producer extraordinaire Clif Norrell, the man behind The Refreshments' classic Fizzy, Fuzzy, Big and Buzzy as well as RCPM's No More Beautiful World and Turbo Ocho, was also there with trumpet in hand to work his magic on and off the stage.

Similar to 2008’s Turbo Ocho VivaCast, a page has been set up on www.azpeacemakers.com where fans will find one new song from the show as well as the accompanying concert footage, each week through May 2009.  Each song and video will be streaming from the site to enjoy free of charge. As soon as a new song is posted on the site, it becomes available for purchase in RCPM’s digital download store. Fans can either buy a new song each week, or at the end of the 14 weeks, purchase the entire Glow In The Dark album at once. Glow In The Dark will not be released in standard CD form – only as a digital download available only through the RCPM website.

In March 2008, RCPM released the ambitious CD/DVD Turbo Ocho.  Featuring rock and roll in its purest form – edgy, careless and celebratory – the release was a result of the first-ever RCPM “VivaCast” (a term the band self-coined), which included a web cast that brought daily audio and video updates to thousands of homes during the recording process, culminating with a sold out concert in Cholla Bay, Mexico. With Turbo Ocho and now, again with Glow In The Dark, RCPM continues to break through old definitions of what is expected of a rock band to forge its own path directly to what matters most – the fans.

It’s no wonder RCPM’s out-of-the-box approach to recordings and releases garners a lot of attention, but at the end of the day, creating great music and making the live music experience an unforgettable one is the band’s primary focus.  Clyne’s songwriting is often compared to the greats of Rock and Americana music, including Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, John Mellencamp and Steve Earle.  As frontman for mid-90s The Refreshments, Clyne scored hits with the singles “Banditos” and “Down Together” and also secured a place in TV history when he penned and performed the theme for the hit animated FOX-TV show, King of the Hill.

The Avett Brothers @ Boulder Theater

North Carolina's Avett Brothers play acoustic music that has roots in traditional folk and bluegrass, but also captures the high spirits and no-boundaries attitude of rock & roll -- which is appropriate, since rock is where Scott Avett and Seth Avett cut their teeth as musicians.

avettTheir songs are honest: just chords with real voices singing real melodies. But, the heart and the energy with which they are sung, is really why people are talking, and why so many sing along.

They are a reality in a world of entertainment built with smoke and mirrors, and when they play, the common man can break the mirrors and blow the smoke away, so that all that's left behind is the unwavering beauty of the songs. That's the commotion, that's the celebration, and wherever The Avett Brothers are tonight, that's what you'll find.

Reed Foehl CD Release @ Boulder Theater

Reed Foehl will celebrate on June 11 the release of Once an Ocean at the Boulder Theater with a concert featuring Frazey Ford and Trish Klein of the Be Good Tanyas and formerly Boulder-based guitar hero Jefferson Hamer.

Opening the special evening of music will be Lyons' own Moody Sisters, followed by a set from Ford and Klein's band.

The new CD, recorded with Tanya's producer John Raham in Vancouver, Canada, is a new chapter in Foehl's already successful performance and songwriting career going back to his days with Acoustic Junction.  Once an Ocean, Foehl's third solo release, features a deft weaving of folk-rock, country and indie pop that reveals an edgy look at love and loss that never sinks into saccharine sentimentality or cold remove.

Advance copies of Once an Ocean, produced by Foehl, Hamer and Raham, are already making waves among industry insiders as a masterfully performed and produced collection of excellent new songs.  The record sparkles start-to-finish with the performance of Hamer on guitar and Raham on drums, and Ford and Klein lending both vocal and instrumental support.  Expect an equally energetic, powerful performance June 11.

Tim Reynold & TR3 w/ On the One @ Tipitina's French Quarter!

timTim Reynolds has been playing music all of his life. Starting as a bass player in a gospel band in his hometown of St. Louis to his break through band in the 80's, TR3 and forward to recording and touring with Dave Mathews Band, Reynolds is a guitarist who rises above the mere mastery of chops to a virtual state of communion with his instrument. Since earning the reputation as a musical virtuoso alongside Dave Matthews, Tim Reynolds has been recognized for his mind-bending guitar techniques, his trademark ability to improvise on any instrument, and his uncommon command of melody and dissonance. He makes use of every capacity the guitar possesses from progressive rock, straight-up jazz and high-powered funk fusion guitar. Tim Reynolds founded TR3 in the 80's and brought back a new version of the band in 2008 to rock and funk the house down. Don't miss this master of psychedelic improvisation on the acoustic guitar!

Opening for the funky rock of Tim Reynolds and TR3 will be San Diego Music Award Winners for Best Jazz Album (2007), ON THE ONE. Drum King John Staten (Karl Denson's Tiny Universe) teamed up with long time friend and sax aficionado Jesse Molloy (Giant People) to create ON THE ONE in the summer of 2006. Bassist Andy Irvine (Giant People) and the recent addition of guitarist Pete Lombardo square this funky soul rock quartet. With music industry heavy hitters calling him one of the best drummers in the business, Staten's hard hitting hip-hop beats drive ON THE ONE's sound. Sax, groove bass, and effortless guitar team up to bring generations of music lovers to the dance floor.

Don't miss the Funkdown at Tipitina's French Quarter!

And remember, this year the Backbeat Jazzfest Series will be offering music lovers and the musicians they love smoke-free environments at all shows.
