Soulive w Shady Horns + Benevento/Russo Duo @ Studio at Colton

duoSince forming Soulive in 1999, guitarist Eric Krasno, organist Neal Evans and drummer Alan Evans have developed a reputation as one of the most sought after instrumental soul-funk trios around, a hard-touring live act that's thrown down everywhere from small rock clubs to opening arena shows for the Rolling Stones. The musical relationships that Soulive has developed, from Chaka Khan, to Dave Matthews, Talib Kweli John Scofield, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Robert Randolph, Joshua Redman, and so many others, speak volumes about how versatile these talented musicians are. Jazz, hip-hop, rock, soul, funk, R & B, Blues - musically, there is not much Soulive hasn't done. Joining the funk powerhouse for a very special performance will be the raging horn section of Lettuce, The Shady Horns, and emerging soul vocalist Nigel Hall.

Following the funky beats of Soulive will be a performance by the essentials of the jam band scene, the Benevento/Russo Duo. The Benevento/Russo Duo formed in 2002 when Joe Russo was offered a Thursday night residency at New York City's Knitting Factory. He enlisted childhood chum Marco Benevento and the two performed as an organ and drum combo for $50 each. With hardly any written material at first, the Duo made a virtue out of necessity by converting loose sketches into 20-minute improvisations. From the very beginning, the group proved that they could also handle instrumental revisions of Led Zeppelin or Radiohead songs with equal skill and audacity. Far from its initiation, when the Benevento/Russo Duo was conceptualized for economy, these days the band remains a twosome of pure artistic desire. The Benevento/Russo Duo was the winner of New Groove of the Year in 2005, at the 5th Annual Jammys. They are an indie-rock band that jams. They are a jazz-combo that rocks.

Don't miss a night of exceptional musical performances at The Studio at Colton Theater!

And remember, this year the Backbeat Jazzfest Series will be offering music lovers and the musicians they love smoke-free environments at all shows.

TORTOISE RELEASE BEACONS OF ANCESTORSHIP

The great majority of artists spend their formative years, if not their entire careers, working to shake off the gravitational pull of their predecessors, and the many masters and masterpieces that came before them. Rare indeed is the artist who outgrows their early influences, and instead become one of the markers by which other groups are measured. Almost alone among bands of the last two decades, Tortoise is a group that resists easy metaphors and analogies, who can be described as sounding like only themselves and no one else. Twenty years after its founding, the band’s signature and singularly inimitable sound—a fluid intersection of dub, dance, jazz, techno, rock, and classical minimalism, with no part overwhelming or dominating the whole—remains an American and international original. Even more unusually, they seem to have arrived at their sound with almost no apprenticeship to speak of; to judge from their early singles and albums alone, they seem to have come into being with their musical identity and DNA fully formed, like Athena from the forehead of Zeus. Further, while the group has spawned countless imitators, heirs, and followers—sincere, flattering, and otherwise—Tortoise remains unique in the world of contemporary music for their boundless intellectual curiosity, their unmistakable compositional voice, and their synthesis of seemingly contradictory sound worlds far from their doorstep.

Beacons of Ancestorship is Tortoise's sixth full-length album, and their first release of new material in five years, since 2004's It's All Around You. In the interim, the group also released and toured behind the 2006 career retrospective box set A Lazarus Taxon, and an album of covers with vocalist Will Oldham by the likes of Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Richard Thompson, and The Minutemen, entitled The Brave and the Bold. Additionally, the individual members have kept busy with various other projects, including but not limited to Exploding Star Orchestra, Bumps, Fflashlights, and Powerhouse Sound.

A characteristic Tortoise album is one that traverses an encyclopedia of styles and reference points, a document of where musical intersections and dialogue are occurring at a given moment in time. Beacons of Ancestorship is no different, with nods to techno, punk, electro, lo-fi noise, cut-up beats, heavily processed synths, and mournful, elegiac dirges. We see these ideas working out in compositions like “High Class Slim Came Floatin' In,” an eight-minute track which playfully references the world of ecstatic rave and dance culture with a curiously ambivalent, multi-part suite overlaid with robotic, machine-sounding melodies that stop and start in several different time signatures before the song’s ultimate resolution; and again in “Yinxianghechengqi,” which begins as a straightforward uptempo math-rocker before steadily accelerating into a wall of fuzzy atonal sqwonk.

There are many moods, styles, and modes in the Tortoise songbook, of course—often, in the course of a single composition. Consistent throughout, however, is what might be called a pervasive element of group play, or ensemble-mindedness, as opposed to emphasis on a virtuoso soloist or frontman. (Think Robert Altman versus Robert Plant.) In the same sense that the string quartet and all small-ensemble chamber music can be thought of as an intelligent conversation among equals—violins, viola, and cello taking turns, expressing opinions, joining voices and then coming apart, as also occurs in elevated discourse—so, too, the calling card of a Tortoise song is the experience of a sound being worked out as a conversation among the individual and interrelated parts—of an ensemble thinking collectively and in group dynamics through the expression of a multi-layered musical thought.

Tortoise's Beacons of Ancestorship is out June 23rd on Thrill Jockey. Additionally, the first track on the album will be included on a Thrill Jockey compilation, Records Toreism, being released on Record Store Day on April 18th, and the band will be releasing a series of 5" records following the album's release. Tortoise will also be playing the Pitchfork Music Festival on Friday, July 17th. Their performance is part of the "Write the Night: Set Lists By Request" series where ticket holders can vote on which of the band's songs they'd like to hear during their set.

Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks Release New Album

hicks In vintage Dan Hicks form, Tangled Tales mashes the outlaw swing music, insightful charm, and brilliant melodies that have endeared him to audiences and fellow artists for four decades with his signature understated melancholy that could only be born from a creative genius. Featuring a world-class collection of musical talent including instrumental virtuosos David Grisman, Charlie Musselwhite, and slide-guitarist Roy Rogers, and produced by Grammy-winning roots music producer Chris Goldsmith, Tangled Tales delivers 8 great new original tunes that feel like instant Dan Hicks classics (and some choice cover tunes too).

Also available is a limited edition vinyl version of Tangled Tales, with cover art and packaging designed - as always - by Hicks himself.  For forty years Dan has created all of his own album art and promotional materials - cutting and pasting and drawing and illustrating - all by hand. Hicks has always had a clear idea of the aesthetics that best compliment his music.  In fact, the visuals are essential for Dan to further communicate the message of the songs, and he considers them an extension of the musical vision of each album. Family and friends who visit his home know this first hand, as remnants from magazine clippings, pieces of his drawings, old photographs, pages from books and atlases, and more can be found on his floors throughout; clippings that, more often than not, find their way into his work.  Need proof?  Check out Dan's new video here.

Tangled Tales is a more-than-worthy addition to Hicks' already massive body of work.  It is an irresistible nod to Dan Hicks' undeniable musical legacy, and a potent reminder of all of the musical inspiration that this Great American Songwriter has spawned. Revered by and also having collaborated with such legendary artists as Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Bette Midler, Brian Setzer, Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffett, Rickie Lee Jones -- Dan Hicks serves up his unique fashion, attitude and swagger that are embodied in his eccentricity and totally unique sound. His counter-culture appeal, which has twice landed him on the cover of Rolling Stone, has always been rooted in his songwriting. His lyrics have been touted as some of the sharpest-tongued, driest-witted, and subtly hilarious bits of irreverence ever committed to rhyme. He sets these lyrical gems to quirky tunes that trade on a bagful of jazz chords and an irresistible rhythm.

This Friday starts Gene Ween Band US Southeast tour

The Five Corners Quintet's 'Hot Corner'

Hot Corner- for the Grateful Web

In 2005, The Five Corners Quintet from Helsinki took the international dancefloor jazz scene by a storm. "Chasin' the Jazz Gone By", their debut for Ricky-Tick Records, a label that was initially conceived of as a vehicle for releasing the very first TFCQ vinyl single, proved out to be both an artistic and a commercial success story. For once and for all, the album proved that it is possible to look back while moving forward. The touch of producer-composer Tuomas Kallio was true to the golden era of modern jazz, and his vision in updating form rather than feeling resulted in music that is truly "postmodern jazz", if there ever was some.

Three years, some 50,000 sold records, and 100+ international gigs later, The Five Corners Quintet are set to return with their sophomore effort. The album, out on Milan Records in April is entitled "Hot Corner", and everything about it indicates that the scene-leading Finnish ensemble has upped the ante. Rather, theirs will be the task of taking 2000 Century dancefloor jazz into another level.

Some things remain, of course. The sports axiom about not changing a winning team reigns true here, with a guest appearance by jazz vocalist par excellance, Mr. Mark Murphy, who also lent his golden voice to three tracks on the debut. This time around, however, it should come as no big suprise that a bunch of Finns manage to lure a living jazz legend to take part in their production, for TFCQ face high expectations when it comes to their return in recorded form.

The enormously successful live band consisting of Teppo Mäkynen (drums/bandleader), Timo Lassy (sax), Jukka Eskola (trumpet), Mikael Jakobsson (piano), and Antti Lötjönen (double bass), also remains. On "Hot Corner", however, the band takes a larger role in comparison to the first album. Tuomas Kallio is the "commander-in-chief" once again, but there's a stronger sense of community also in the studio.

The new sound of TFCQ could be described as leaning towards the "Hot" of the album title more than the cool of their previously recorded work. Here, the impact of the live band is evident. Kallio's compositions also move away from standard jazz into fresh new territories, where even the occasional flirt with genres such as rockabilly is to be expected. The EP preceding the album release already showed marks of the band "rocking" rather than "swinging", and those directions are further explored on the upcoming album.

One thing is certain: The Five Corners Quintet have a knack at searching and finding new directions instead of following paths trampled by others. Of this, their new album "Hot Corner" is an ample piece of evidence.

ABOVE & BEYOND ANNOUNCE U.S. TOUR DATES

Above & Beyond- for the Grateful Web

This February, ABOVE & BEYOND—who are Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness and Paavo Slijamaki—will return to the U.S. for a club tour in support of their compilation album Anjunadeep:01.  Set for release via ULTRA Records on February 16, the double-disc set encompasses a variety of tracks from their respected Anjunadeep imprint.

On this tour, where they will be joined by support act Jaytech,  ABOVE & BEYOND will showcase the Anjunadeep sound in the early part of their sets and before progressing to the quality melodic trance sound for which they are best known.  In a short space of time, Anjunadeep has grown from being a promising sibling to the Anjunabeats label, to a dynamic and influential imprint in its own right, pioneering a sound somewhere between house and trance.  The tour kicks off February 12 in Atlanta and will take the trio throughout many key markets in the U.S. including Houston, Denver, New York, Washington D.C. and Las Vegas, as well as into Canada with stops in Toronto, Calgary and Edmonton.

Winning fans such as James Zabiela, Desyn Masiello, Eric Prydz and Laurent Garnier along the way, Anjunadeep received a nomination for "Best Record Label" at DJ Magazine's Best of British Awards 2008. ABOVE & BEYOND's Tony McGuinness said: "The road between house and trance used to be a dusty, barren path, visited by only the truly brave, but in the last few years it has become an exciting, bustling place with constant traffic going both ways. Anjunadeep is that lovely, shiny building on the left with all the people looking in the window."

The label's debut compilation features Anjunadeep stalwarts Jaytech, Michael Cassette (aka Komytea), Interplay, Joonas Hahmo and recent high profile addition 16 Bit Lolitas.  They are joined by newer faces like Colombia's Liluca, Russia's Proff and Canadian Paul Keeley, as ABOVE & BEYOND conjure up two CD's of spirited melodic house music. A special treat comes in the form of ABOVE & BEYOND's own remix of Radiohead's "Reckoner" officially licensed via XL Recordings for the physical format only.

The So So Glos Announce US Tour Dates

photo by Eddie Brannan- for the Grateful Web

The SO SO GLOS are four brothers who play the punk rock and roll that they believe in. Originally from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, they now live at the Market Hotel in Bushwick- a space they founded that is both their home and community. Brews, smokes and music blasting, the J train crushing along the tracks outside, non-stop. That is their music: aggressive, urgent, and immediate- political and poetic because it has to be. But these Brooklyn kids aren't just touting the same old punk; Graced with electro MPC breaks, surf sounds, gang vox, and a little tambo it sounds fresh. Still though, after the rubble settles and the smoke clears, its unmistakenly punk rock in its spirit.

They started the infamous Market Hotel venue with promoter Todd P because they felt, with the DIY scene getting stronger; Brooklyn needed a larger all ages DIY venue. They were right- The Hotel has gone to host some of the best bands of now (No Age, The Black Lips, Dan Deacon) and some of the most legendary NYC parties in recent memory. Never content to play hometown heroes The SO SO GLOS self-released their S/T full length in 2007 and supported it with DIY touring at house parties and punk clubs all around the US.

In August The SO SO GLOS recorded "TOURISM/TERRORISM" at Staten Islands SOR studios with Adam Reich producing and mixing done by Spidey (Ghostface Killah). At 27 minutes long, the record is somewhere between an EP and an album. It was made a shortplayer "for the trigger happy iPod generation" half-jokes 21 year old lead singer Alex Levine with a grin. These guys are for real.

The SO SO GLOS will begin a new tour in January, with dates lasting until everyone f@cking gets it.
