Mahjongg Announce Winter 2009 US TOUR

Mahjongg- for the Grateful Web

Originally formed in the great bounteous Midwest region of the United States "Mahjongg" began as a simple experiment between The Grid and The Sphere.  To attract the brood orientation of the young mind, Mahjongg knew the only way to spread Kontpab's message was by forming a musiK band.  This ever-expanding Sect uses "irratainment" to teach the warnings and Revelations of the almighty god Kontpab. Kontpab basically warns the human race of the mass "funneling" of the populace minds into The Grid.

Once trapped in The Grid themselves, Kontpab instructed Mahjongg to make a pilgrimage to Chicago, IL., where they would form their first "warning orbs," at local art spaces and bars, and in turn be shown the light that is The Sphere.  It was during this time that the Machinegong EP was recorded, and their first attempt to leave Kontpab's message sublimated in the patricians of the clubs was a success.  Kontpab showed Mahjongg that The Grid's seemingly well-defined rules and laws could in fact be used against The Grid itself.

Many not briefed on the vast Kontpab religion will never fully understand Mahjongg during their "Warning Orbs," so they cut another album to set into stone what Kontpab had clearly shown them: Raydoncong 2005. Again using The Grid's vast amalgam of mathematical tools against itself, The Sect were able to demonstrate to the brood, for instance with prime numbered polyrhythms, that not only was the path to The Sphere full of spectacle and self awakening, but pharmaceuticals, beer, and dancing as well.  It was here that Mahjongg became not only teacher, but student, and this is where The Chicago Sects association with the Water Babies began.

Born into the great Chicago winter of '06 in the septic rivers of the Magikal Forest, the Water Babies used Kontpabs undivided and all seeing power to unlock The Sphere's greatest secret: improvisation. With these new teachings from the almighty Kontpab, Mahjongg was able to create a new church and recording studio for the Chicago Sect.  Soon the tapestries of aural chaos were tempered and perfected.  Software was upgraded and drums tuned.  With nervous but relevant hair follicles and motley threads, Mahjongg hit the scene.  Many eons of "Warning Orbs" have since commenced, but the human race still chooses to "funnel" into The Grid.  It is because of this that Mahjongg is left with no choice but to invoke the name of our great God almighty itself.  And it is with this name they proudly present to you their new album, Kontpab.  For we are all Kontpab.

Elliot Murphy: Back in the USA for a West Coast Tour

Elliott Murphy- for the Grateful Web

Rock troubadour Elliott Murphy and multi-cultural singer-songwriter Jann Klose continue their U.S. tour this week, with shows in San Francisco, Felton (Santa Cruz), Tehachapi (near Bakersfield and Edwards Air Force Base), Los Angeles, Long Beach and San Diego.  The two will also be performing at the NAMM Convention.

Elliott Murphy first came to prominence 35 years ago with the release of the now-more-relevant-than-ever album, AQUASHOW.  That, along with NIGHT LIGHTS, LOST GENERATION, and JUST A STORY FROM AMERICA were played on mainstream radio throughout the United States.  These albums were also picked up internationally, especially in Japan and Europe, where Elliott has found international stardom.  19 years ago he moved to France. He last played the United States in 2000 at New York City's Bottom Line, and his last west coast dates were in 1996.

Elliott has released 30 albums, his latest is NOTES FROM THE UNDERGROUND, which has received 5 stars from ALLMUSIC.COM.  Some of the musicians who've collaborated with Elliott on his recordings are Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Phil Collins, and the Rolling Stones' Mick TaylorElliott was also honored with a monumental exposition, LAST OF THE ROCK STARS-RETROSPECTIVE at Paris' Town Hall, and has been cited in literature in the work, SAVAGE DETECTIVES by the late Roberto Bolano, who now has a best-seller book called, 2666.

Elliott, who is already played on Sirius-XM's the LOFT, will be the subject of a story on an upcoming Bob Edwards' show on the satellite station, and he will be releasing his 31st album this March 16, his 60th birthday.  And this spring, he'll be acting in the French movie "La Ligne Blanche" out in spring 2009.

Opening all dates will be Jann Klose, whose new album REVERIE is an independent release that has been picked up by 90 AAA radio stations in North America, a variety of folk and jazz stations, some European stations including regional BBCs and Radio Caroline, and played on a mixture of formats including talk, classic rock morning and "Acoustic Sunrise"-styled shows, and Sirius-XM's The Loft.  KMMT-Mammoth Lakes, a top 40/modern rock station, has also picked up on Jann's album.  Born in Germany, raised in Kenya and South Africa, Jann has collaborated on stage with Renaissance's Annie Haslam, songwriters Rosanne Cash, Marty Stuart, and Roger McGuinn.

The tour has received praise in every city it's played so far from Boston, MA to Larchmont, NY.  THE WASHINGTON POST'S Christopher Porter notes, "Murphy engaged his campfire crowd with direct eye contact, making the evening's intimacy even more intense. His textured voice - as with his songwriting, it's equal parts Bob Dylan, Lou Reed and Bruce Springsteen - also exhibited tonal strength and beauty."

The Schenectady Gazette's Brian McElhiney writes, "Murphy gives hungry cadre of stateside fans what they came for."  Indeed the fans also are receiving more than their money's worth.  One Boston fan blogged, "Murphy sang with the resilience of a survivor who will always continue to grow and change. His performance let us in on a taste of what his journey has been like. I know I felt changed by it. Murphy's show was a true rock 'n' roll baptism."  A female working in Washington, DC media had never heard of either artist, and her boyfriend was curious about the venue they played in.  She said, "This was the most memorable night of rock & roll I've ever had.  Both artists are great."

Fujiya & Miyagi Announce 2009 US Winter

Fujiya & Miyagi- for the Grateful Web

Imagine that Fujiya & Miyagi are mask-wearing technicians dissecting music, keen to magnify particles of sound to create a pulsing antidote to the ordinary. They speak in tongues, using language as a rhythm, picking words that sound good, rhyming 'jigsaws' with 'carnivores'.

Their songs are incisive snapshots of real lives that make household appliances sound threatening. They are steeped in vintage music from evocative krautrock to deep soul, with wafts of early Human League synth, Floydian Englishness and the throbbing groove of Tom Tom Club, all filtered for modern times.

In total, Fujiya & Miyagi don't really sound like anything. Instead, they sound like everything condensed into perfectly arranged three minute chunks of infectious pop music, a strange hybrid of James Brown on Valium and Wire gone pop. Or maybe Serge Gainsbourg with a PhD in electronics backed by David Byrne's Eno-produced scratchy guitar mixed by MF Doom. Its Darwinism gone mad.

Formed in 2000 as an electronic duo of David Best (guitars and vocals) and Steve Lewis (synths, beats, programming), they released Electro Karaoke In The Negative Style two years later, a minimal electronic set it hangs eerily on Best's distinctive whispered vocal. Adding bass player Matt Hainsby in 2004, they released a series of ten inch EPs that took them to the hearts of fanzineland. Gathered together these parables of personal injury, both physical and mental, made up three quarters of the well-received (Pitchfork, NME, MOJO, etc) album Transparent Things in 2006. Named after a Nabokov brain dump on the relationship between the past and the present. It sums them up.

A Regal seven-inch, "Uh", further concentrated their sound. A set of vocal ticks, a funky bass and a storyline about a relationship as prickly as two porcupines, it made small talk sound sinister over an infectious groove. It was the perfect set up for their second US Album, Light Bulbs – imagine 11 classic ideas clicking on above your head, now with real drums in places, courtesy of Lee Adams, and the picture is complete.

Fujiya & Miyagi stay away from lyrical themes that have been done to death. Using old synths to punctuate their beautifully-observed anecdotes on romantic triumphs and disasters, heroes and villains and the world at large, their rhythms palpitate to produce modern symphonies like no-one else. Light Bulbs is a journey littered with fragmented images, anecdotes from the sublime to the ridiculous, blurry stories that you feel you shouldn't have overheard. Each track an aural contamination set to itch your inner ear every waking moment.

Incus - 'Fire and Bone'

Incus- for the Grateful Web

Drawing on influences from Middle Eastern, Native American, African and Eastern European musical traditions, Incus is redefining the American Tribal music movement. The combination of keyboards, accordion, violin, and cello with male and female vocals creates a beautifully haunting soundscape, replete with mesmerizing rhythms capable of inducing trance-like states.

Incus expresses a willingness to embrace the totality of human emotion, both light and dark. An Incus performance is a gathering of people who come together to live and breathe the challenge of being alive, to raise the energy to move toward ecstasy. The element of fire both illuminates and transforms, and it is this energy that Incus embodies while holding space for people to acknowledge the dark and move toward the light.

Incus' music has moved many a dancer since the band's formation in the mid-nineties. Indeed, the band's live act has featured performers of many stripes for years, particularly belly dancers, fire and flag spinners, and shadow dancers, among others. More than just a band, Incus has become an important anchor for a community of creative performers, providing the musical and energetic foundation for creative expression both onstage and in the audience.

Their newest single, "Dancer Through Time," is set to a video that portrays some of the Incus experience, featuring the band and many other performers. A teaser can be seen on the band's website. The song is also featured on a recently released DVD as part of the Fantasy Belly dance Series: Desire, produced by World Dance New York. The song accompanies a dance performed by Naraya of Vadalna Tribal Dance Company.

This embrace and transcendence of duality extends to the very modes of performance themselves. Incus is equally at home rocking out onstage at clubs and bars "plugged in" and electrified as they are performing in their acoustic power at fire festivals around the country. They have gained appreciative followings from these diverse settings. During the last four summers, Incus toured over 20,000 miles, making music at over 100 fires, and at various festivals and venues.

The core members of the tribe include composer Jason Cohen on vocals, keys, accordion, and percussion; Jacob Sirois on drums and percussion; and Chris Baum (Dropkick Murphys) on violin and vocals. For the summer of 2008, they will be joined at different shows by Billy Woods, Michael Wall, and Liron Peled (Raquy and the Cavemen) on percussion; Eli Carlton-Pearson on guitar; Kellianna and Katy Q. on vocals; and Kira Meade.. Dancers Naraya of Vadalna Tribal Dance Company and Sarah "Jezebel" Wood will accompany the musicians.

Jason Cohen, the visionary force of the band, has experienced numerous healing and expressive arts rituals around the United States, Mexico, and recently, Costa Rica. His knowledge, experience, and training as a ritual facilitator becomes a part of every Incus performance. Jason is also known for his work developing the interfaith spiritual Forestdance Gatherings, which have taken place in 5 US states as well as in Costa Rica. These are powerful transformational ritual gatherings designed to bring people into their full power through sacred fire circles. As the facilitator for these events, Jason is a community organizer, deeply committed to empowering people and communities while doing his best to honor all life on the planet.

Guerilla Union Partners w/ HipHopOffical for RTB Charity Auction

gweb says: support charity auctions!- for the Grateful Web

Guerilla Union, the promoters for the 2008 Rock The Bells International Festival Series, has partnered with Hip Hop Official to present the first-ever Rock the Bells online charity auction. All proceeds will benefit the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

From December 1 through December 15, 2008—just following Diabetes Awareness Month (November)—fans can go online to bid for various pieces of memorabilia from the 2008 tour.  Featured items include two custom limited-edition Rock the Bells skateboard decks signed by all 2008 RTB artists including Nas, Mos Def, members of De La Soul, The Pharcyde, ATCQ and more.  In addition, several 2008 RTB artists and labels are getting involved by donating special autographed pieces, such as sneakers from Supernatural, a prize pack from Duck Down Records, plus many more.

Inspiration for getting involved with this great cause is Phife Dawg, member of A Tribe Called Quest and a diabetic. During the 2008 Rock the Bells festival series, he displayed tremendous strength and resilience through his current battle with the disease. According to Phife Dawg, "Believe it or not, diabetes affects us all.  Until we find a cure it will continue to affect us. I was lucky to have a 2nd chance at life, others aren't so lucky, so please help us find a cure for this madness we call DIABETES!"  Chang Weisberg, Guerilla Union founder, states, "Phife was an absolute inspiration to myself and our staff.  His courage and strength to perform night in and night out for Rock The Bells was nothing less than extraordinary.  We are extremely excited to join his fight against this serious and deadly disease by giving back to the community through this auction.  With November being Diabetes Awareness Month, our goal is to bring national attention by sharing a piece of hip-hop history with our fans."

To read more about the auction and learn about diabetes, people can visit the official website or visit www.hiphopofficial.com. Instant updates about new items up for bid will also be available by texting CHARITY to 44688.

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's BEWARE Streets 3/17/09

Bonnie

Breaking through the dirt and shooting upward into our atmosphere is a new variety of exotic Bonnie 'Prince' Billy plant. Stronger. Stinkier. It blooms in low light and cold but thrives in the sun as well, showing enticing spots and eating small creatures as they wander into its jaws. They had it coming, they were weak…and you're next! Beware.

Though Beware shares spit with its immediate predecessor released this past summer, Lie Down in the Light, it's reach is longer and stronger, more grandiose. Where fiddle and steel contribute their rustic timbre alongside guitars and voices, a thickening thud of low tone rolls beneath, giving the record a bottom that's fun to watch bounce in new clothes. This indensifies the air and heralds Beware as Bonny's biggest, most ambitious record to date – yea, bigger and more ambitious than even The Letting Go! A listen or two through and you too may conclude that this could also be the great Bonnie 'Prince' Billy contempo-country record – though, as always, the 'Prince' goes his own special way, even when climbing the charts with brawny arms and classic titles like "I Don't Belong to Anyone," "You Can't Hurt Me Now," and "I Am Goodbye."

Though the title (and catalog number - DC666!) portends horror, Beware is a much more measured exploration of the soul's frailty and the sorry state of human relationships than your typical, everyday, bleaked-out, all-and-nothing roots rock platter. Song titles suggest half of a heated dialogue, perhaps just one side of a super-apocalypto phone call. Yet, there's humor here as well, some of it too cute to call black. Lyrically, domestic ripostes are mixed with I-thou asides, statements of lusty selfhood and subtlety in between the lines, examining culpability and the need for release and rebellion, if you must know. Basically, if you haven't learned already, love goes down mazy, anfractuous paths, on some days giving rise to irritations (both spiritual and physical) and the difficult consideration of an alternative fate. Sometimes all you want to do is f**k. Then there's the times of fun, laughter and learning, and the sudden appreciation of your partner, your only friend. And with all these things in hand, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy says Beware.

Joining Bonny deep in the mix of Beware, the roll-call of top players include the band (Josh Abrams, Jennifer Hutt, Emmett Kelly and Michael Zerang) and special guests (Dee Alexander, Leroy Bach, Jim Becker, Robert Cruz, DV DeVincentis, Jon Langford, Greg Leisez, Rob Mazurek, Nicole Mitchell and Azita Youseffi)!

Beware will be released on Drag City on March 17, 2009. Bonny does not tour in support of records, however he will tour simultaneous with the record release, even in major markets. Beware!
