Canadian Electro/Folk Duo Moontricks Release New Single "Animals" Off Upcoming Album 'Currents'

With four singles in four months under their belt, Canadian electro-folk duo MOONTRICKS are back today (7/29) with their latest release on Westwood Recordings. A slow burn track, “Animals” infuses a powerfully evocative vocal performance with the boot-stomping spirit responsible for bringing the pair from a local Kootenay act to an internationally recognized fan-favorite. Exercising production poignance in restraint while simultaneously offering up electronic accents, Moontricks collect yet another dimension into their growing dynamism as artists and performers.

“‘Animals’ is an ode to the divine feminine,” the band shares. “It carries a pulse and rhythm bridged by raw acoustic strings and haunting choral sections as if from the rafters of a house of worship and veneration.”

In addition to “Animals,” Moontricks has been unveiling a series of singles leading up to the release of the duo’s first full-length album release, Currents out September 9. Vast, intimate, and dazzling, Currents is an album about settling into feeling comfortably lost and being okay with not knowing it all. It’s about finding joy and inspiration in the act of seeking.

Recent singles include “The Edge,” a soulful collaborative track with Dirtwire, “Embers,” and its corresponding ethereal animation video by Jesse Stasiuk at Kuro Cabra Studios, the hypnotic “Forest Of My Soul,” (with an acoustic version of the track released via video) and “Parting Ways,” a track featuring multi-instrumentalist/producer KR3TURE. The band’s releases have been featured in some of Spotify’s top editorial playlists including: wanderlust, Boho + Chill, New Music Friday Canada, Run Wild, Nu-Blue and Roots Rising.

Additionally, Moontricks--who had been establishing themselves on the festival circuit before the pandemic--are touring this summer to support their new music. Look for Gurley and Rodman to appear at many major and boutique Canadian festivals, as well as select U.S. gatherings this summer and into the fall. Confirmed dates thus far are:
