Festivals

Us Coloradoans are blessed with the summer opportunity to attend so many wonderful destination music festivals. From Telluride to Lyons, from Aspen to Nederland, the amount of music and fun available is really endless. Anybody considering moving from their ordinary neck-of-the-woods to Colorado could assure himself or herself that the music scene out here is at a peak in the summer months.  I have two summer favorites that I never miss.

The schedule for Shoe Fest 2012 is now online. Shoe Fest is a three day outdoor music camping event being held on September 7-9, 2012.

A week removed from Outside Lands and I can still hear ringing in my ears, feel a subtle ache in my body, and play music sets over and over again in my mind. While my previous write-up mainly had commentary about the environment the festival was in, this article’s focus is on the music.

DeLuna Fest is proud to announce the daily performance schedule for their third annual music and beach festival. Headlining the festival Friday, September 21st, Pearl Jam will be joined by Ben Folds Five, Gaslight Anthem, Trampled by Turtles and DJ Jazzy Jeff.

RIOT FEST–the music festival which celebrates rock, indie, punk and underground artists from every era--has announced the line-ups and venues for the after-parties for the Chicago festival (see full line-ups below). The official on-sale begins today, August 21 with a limited number of single-day tickets available. All after-parties are open to 3-day pass holders (subject to capacity).

The wait is over! The third annual Catskill Chill Music Festival at Camp Camp Minglewood in Hancock, New York has unveiled the 2012 music schedule.

Coming up at Yonder Mountain String Band's Kinfolk Celebration in Lyons, CO on August 24-25, 2012, a silent auction will take place to benefit the Colorado Fire Relief Fund. Fans will have an opportunity to place a bid and win exciting prices such as archived posters and signed merchandise, tickets to upcoming events, and instruments and gear from the band's vault. Separate auctions will take place on both August 24 and 25, 2012.

The last day of this festival began slowly with the contemplative music of Tony Vines. Visitors like me new to Rhythms on the Rio might not fully appreciate what they were hearing from this talented young man. A skilled guitarmaker and musician, Vines struggled with bipolar disorder for two decades, often diving deep into depression and near suicide. He sat on the stage on a cool Sunday morning in South Fork, Colorado, unmedicated for his disorder, healed by the power of his faith, singing songs of hope and belief.

With a positive weather forecast and a backpack full of blankets, I wandered into Golden Gate Park for my second Outside Lands Festival. This was the first year in which all tickets sold out, so the park was filled to capacity. I didn't know what it would look like, but I was ready to experience it. The first day always has a kind of anxiety to it, whether it's dealing with Muni not being able to handle the amount of passengers on the bus or deciding which band to favor during a schedule conflict.

Fresh water and blue skies await me this weekend at the 10th annual Hoxeyville Music Festival.  Life has been rough for me the past few weeks.  I’m gonna pack my rain gear, a few hoodies, my golf bag, and for this special weekend, I am actually going to skip the sandals and bring some real shoes.

Work sucks. Bill collectors are calling.  I’m ready for an escape.
