After a backbreaking weekend of live music, I strolled into Shine for a performance by self-professed “quirky folk” band, The Shook Twins. Shine is a glimpse into what Boulder was and in some circumstances still is, and the complete antithesis of the growing corporate model seen along Pearl Street and recently highlighted by the emergence of Wal-Mart.

Identical twins Laurie Shook (vocals, banjo, percussion and beatboxing) and Katelyn Shook (vocals, guitar and mandolin), are at the heart of the quirky folk band, Shook Twins. Rounding out the quartet is Niko Daoussis on bass/mandolin & Anna Tivel on fiddle. The Shook Twins intertwine gorgeous “twin” harmonies with an eclectic and eccentric blend of folk, roots, pop and fun. But don’t be fooled. The Shook Twins are not your average folk trio. They have a few tricks up their sleeves.

The Shook Twins sophomore release, Window is full of frolic and romp. The Portland, Oregon, "Quirky Folk Trio" features identical twins Laurie Shook (vocals, banjo, percussion and beatboxing) and Katelyn Shook (vocals, guitar and mandolin), with Kyle Volkman on bass. Released in April 2011, Window redefines Folk with hair-raising harmonies and an eclectic blend of resonating roots, precocious pop and foolhardy fun.
