The Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival is proud to announce large scale greening initiatives for its 2008 event, set to take place June 12-15 in Manchester, TN. Festival organizers continue to take aggressive steps toward mitigating the event's environmental impact and raising awareness about green issues. By focusing on drastic carbon reduction at the festival and in the lives of its patrons, Bonnaroo continues its long time commitment to providing a first-rate entertainment experience while creating a community that cares for our planet. Clean energy initiatives, responsible product consumption, superior waste management, local sourcing and education programs are all part of the festival's aggressive environmental plan outlined below. "We work tirelessly to reduce the impact this festival has on the environment," says Bonnaroo sustainability coordinator Laura Sohn, "and we inspire the Bonnaroo community to do the same."

In partnership with the Clean Air Conservancy, Bonnaroo will buy enough carbon reduction credits to offset all emissions, making the festival a carbon neutral event. Attendees will be encouraged to enhance the effort by purchasing "Clif Cool Tags" wind energy credits to make up for emissions produced by their travel. The festival is also running a carpooling contest offering a chance to win VIP camping upgrades to vehicles with four or more people. To fight global warming throughout the year, Bonnaroo welcomes Carbon Shredders on site to help fans track their personal carbon reduction. Fans will be invited to make a pledge to reduce their energy usage and carbon footprint by 10 percent by 2010, a shift that will keep hundreds of millions of pounds of CO2 out of Earth's atmosphere.

As always, Bonnaroo will run an extensive recycling and composting program in partnership with Clean Vibes, an organization that has diverted 50 percent of the festival's waste from landfills over the past two years. This year, the festival will start a compost processing site right on the festival property, which will eventually be used to nurture new life on the grounds. "With no offsite hauling, we can reduce fuel consumption and close the loop on the festival's biodegradable waste cycle," says Clean Vibes owner Anna Borofsky.

Bonnaroo 2008 brings back the popular Planet Roo village, an area dedicated to preserving the environment and promoting healthy living. Non-profit organizations, eco-friendly vendors and performers will gather to educate patrons about what they can do to protect their own health as well as the planet's. Fans who stop by Planet Roo will have the chance to learn about alternative fuels and energy sources, eat organic food at a waste-free restaurant and hear festival artists discuss topics related to the theme "Social Change Through Music." Representatives from dozens of organizations such as Rock the Earth, Headcount, Farm Aid, and Oxfam will interact with fans and artists to raise awareness about environmental and political issues.

Recognizing that green issues are of paramount importance to the organization, its patrons, and the world at large, Bonnaroo is proud to present an event that is not only a good time, but also an example of an environmentally sound gathering that helps our planet remain hospitable to life.

Hailing from Athens, DEAD CONFEDERATE's psychedelic-meets-grunge sound created quite the buzz at this year's SXSW and Sasquatch festival with a number of well-attended shows, including a much-coveted opening slot for R.E.M. at SXSW.  They have been getting strong support from such influential radio stations as KEXP/Seattle, WOXY/Cincinnati and WXPN/Philadelphia and NPR recently said, "Dead Confederate's wall of sound feels cinematic and atmospheric, loud and beautiful." Their debut eponymous EP is currently available digitally and at retail now and a full-length album (that they are working on with Mike McCarthy) will be released later this year.

DEAD CONFEDERATE will be playing the Bonnaroo on Saturday, June 14th at 1:30AM in the Cafe Tent.

Wed, 06/04/2008 - 8:47 pm

THE LEE BOYS will bring their blazing, inspirational live show Bonnaroo on Sunday, June15th from 1:15-2:15 in Tent 2 (That Tent).  They will also perform on the Sonic Stage that day from 6:00-6:30 PM (following Solomon Burke).

2008 is promising to be a big year for the band.  They just performed SIX TIMES over the course of one weekend this year's New Orleans' Jazz Fest.  In addition to BONNAROO, thy will be performing at the Austin City Limits Fest, Summercamp, High Sierra, DefFest, Cornerstone Festival, Keystone Blues Fest, and most of the country's most prestigious festivals.

This sextet from Miami transcends the boundaries set by musical genres.  An energetic blend of R&B, gospel, hip-hop, rock and country driven by the pedal steel guitar, The Lee Boys win over audiences at jamband fests such as Live Oak and Wannee, folks fests such as Merlefest and the National Folk Fest, and blues/jazz fests such as Chicago Blues Fest and the JVC Jazz Fests. They have jammed with the Mississippi Allstars, Bob Weir, Victor Wooten, Derek Trucks and Susan Tesdesci and opened for Los Lobos, The Black Crowes, Gov't Mule and more.

From USA Today (May 2, 2008):

"The Lee Boys, from Miami, rocked the blues tent with their rollicking You've Got to Move. The song started slow and low but steadily picked up pace, taking on the feel and sound of a runaway train. As guitarist Roosevelt Collier plucked at his pedal steel guitar, an electric guitar mounted on a stand and played from a sitting position, audience members danced in the aisles, jumped up and down and waved their arms to the mounting melody."

From the September 2007 issue of OFFBEAT in New Orleans:

"The Lee Boys guitarist Alvin, vocalists Derrick and Keith Lee and their nephews steel guitarist Roosevelt Collier, bassist Alvin Cordy, Jr. and drummer Earl Walker bring their version of sacred steel to the Maple Leaf September 9 for what promises to be a raucous night of guitar stringbending and rhythmic undulation. Though their music was born in the House of God Church in Perrine, Florida, their sound has become a sensation with a secular audience that responds to its happy foot groove and virtuoso guitar technique."

The Lee Boys' Say Yes! is available on Arhoolie Records.  Their newest release is Live At Telluride.

Released to critical acclaim, Hand Built By Robots, the debut album by Newton Faulkner, is available now on Aware/Columbia Records. Billboard says, "His debut album is a confident, impressively kaleidoscopic effort…" while the Chicago Sun-Times says, "A guitar virtuoso, he has mastered a unique technique that allows him to use the instrument as guitar, bass and drums all at once." The double platinum-selling album debuted in the top five in the U.K. combined album charts, spent two weeks at Number One and secured the Number One spot on the U.K. iTunes chart for six straight weeks. Faulkner is currently headlining his own U.S. tour. Please see reverse for a complete list of dates.

Additionally, Faulkner has been honored with a 2008 Brit Award nomination in the "British Male Solo Artist" category and has earned support slots for acclaimed artists The Fray, Paolo Nutini and James Morrison plus appearances at Glastonbury, V Festival and the Cambridge Folk Festival. Faulkner will be touring the U.S. this spring. Please see reverse for a complete list of tour dates.

On Hand Built By Robots—which includes the single "Dream Catch Me"—Faulkner combines finger-picking, string-tapping and percussive drumming on the guitar's body to generate both melody and rhythm on the same instrument. "Tapping," explains Faulkner, "is prodding the strings really hard with your other hand, your picking hand. You can have stuff coming from both sides of the strings—you get two notes and they harmonize themselves."

In addition to the high-profile supporting roles mentioned above, Faulkner has also headlined his own sold-out U.K. tour, progressing from smaller venues to consistently filling 2000-seat rooms in ten different cities. The 23 year-old's approach to performing live has earned him a growing legion of passionate fans including a following amongst the surfing community. Of his love for touring, Faulkner says, "Everything makes more sense on the road…you have a clear understanding of what people like and want."

After proving a highlight at Coachella this year, internationally acclaimed Gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello performs today at Bonnaroo on Saturday, June 14 at 4:00 PM on the Which Stage. Come see why Q Magazine calls Eugene Hutz, "a great performer of our times," with what the New York Press is calling "a band that everyone should see live."

Currently on tour in North America and fresh off the heels of Coachella, Gogol Bordello will continue the festival circuit with their "Forces of Victory Tour 2008" with electrifying performances at Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits. Their Coachella performance had the Wall Street Journal raving that "Gogol Bordello mashed punk energy with Eastern European modes for a set that received the wildest reception of any show I saw" and the Los Angeles Times was left impressed by the celebration of "sensuality in both words and raucous, joyful internationalist dance rock." Proceeding the US dates, Gogol Bordello will make their way through Europe and Asia including performances at the Alive Festival in Portugal, Exit Festival in Serbia, Sonic Art Festival in France and Fuji Rock in Japan.

Gogol Bordello's 2007 release SUPER TARANTA!, their most prolific album to date has earned them glowing praise from the press worldwide. Punkbands.com says "Super Taranta! stands as a testament to the great (and unique) songwriting of the band, which is better than ever."

Gogol Bordello front-man, Eugene Hutz will also be seen this fall in the Madonna-directed film, 'Filth & Wisdom' in which he stars in the lead role and is the inspiration for the movie. Madonna and Eugene's first collaboration was this past summer when they performed together at Live Earth in London. Eugene and Sergey performed a Romanesque version of "La Isla Bonita" that combined Gogol Bordello's gypsy-stomper "Lela Pala Tute" with Madonna singing in Romanes.

Superfly Productions and A.C. Entertainment are excited to announce the initial lineup for the 2009 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. The eighth annual four-day camping and music festival will be held on June 11 - 14 on the same beautiful 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee, 60 miles south of Nashville. Every year Bonnaroo seeks to make history by offering unique and exclusive performances by rock's greatest legends as well as its most significant newcomers. A full list of confirmed acts follows, and more will be announced in the coming weeks. The final Bonnaroo 2009 lineup will total over 120 bands and over 20 comedians performing on 13 stages over four days. Tickets go on sale exclusively through www.bonnaroo.com on Saturday, February 7 at 12:00 PM Eastern.

Continuing the Bonnaroo tradition of diversity and dynamism, the 2009 lineup draws top-flight acts from a staggering range of musical worlds. This year the festival features Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Phish, Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails, TV on the Radio, Wilco, Al Green, David Byrne, Snoop Dogg, Merle Haggard, Animal Collective, Lucinda Williams, Femi Kuti, Mars Volta, Coheed and Cambria, The Del McCoury Band, Alejandro Escovedo and Rodrigo y Gabriela to name a few. This will be Springsteen and his band's only North American festival performance this year. This also will be Phish's only festival performance in 2009, and their presence at Bonnaroo holds a great deal of significance - besides the fact that each of its members has shown the event great support, performing at the festival in various incarnations over the years, Phish's own festivals were notably one of the major inspirations for Bonnaroo's creation and operational strategies. Many of the organizers of those events (large scale, multi-day camping festivals with Phish as the solo performer) were brought on to help birth Bonnaroo in 2002, and continue to play a major role in the festival to this day. Phish will play two shows at the festival - a full two-set performance as well as an additional late-evening set.

As part of this initial Bonnaroo 2009 artist announcement, festival organizers have teamed up with Ghost Robot to create an innovative video that incorporates a new experimental process called stratostencil animation.   The video can be viewed at Bonnaroo.com and here.

The largest and most revered music and camping event in the country, Bonnaroo has elevated the American rock festival to an unprecedented level. As the only round-the-clock major U.S. music festival, Bonnaroo packs an unparalleled amount of entertainment options into its four days. The event has offered its attendees the amenities and community spirit of a small city, with 24 hours of activities including a comedy theater, cinema festival, jazz club, silent disco, arcade, Internet cafés, restaurants, yoga classes and hundreds of high quality craft vendors. Since its inception, Bonnaroo swiftly earned its status as the country's premier music and arts event. According to the New York Times, "Bonnaroo has revolutionized the modern rock festival." The event is famous for the incredible energy that emerges from its crowds, who make the Bonnaroo pilgrimage to immerse themselves in its unique camping community and witness four days of historical music moments. Honoring the festival's unique spirit, Rolling Stone called Bonnaroo "one of the 50 moments to change the history of rock and roll." The festival was also just voted the Best Festival in the magazine's Readers' Poll, and won similar honors at this year's Billboard Music Awards.

This year, Bonnaroo has created a couple of unique ticketing options for its fans. The festival is now offering a special payment plan in which tickets will be available for five (5) payments of $50.00 plus applicable fees. In addition, fans will have the option to purchase a Bonnaroo Green Ticket that will help to support the development and implementation of sustainable improvements at the festival for years to come. Festival organizers are constantly looking for ways to be aggressive with mitigating the event's environmental impact and raising awareness about green issues.

As part of Fuse's three-year deal with Bonnaroo, the network will be the exclusive television partner of the festival.  It will continue to be the only place to watch Bonnaroo on national television and will include live on-air coverage as well as OnDemand and online content. On-air, Fuse will bring viewers live hits, backstage interviews, "Best of Bonnaroo" concert specials and a highlight show of this year's greatest performances.  The network will once again have their headquarters set up in its landmark barn in the middle of Centeroo, enabling them to bring the Fuse experience directly to fans onsite. Leading up to the event, Fuse will run four 60-second news packages that will air throughout the day on Tuesday, February 3rd, providing an insider's look at the 2009 Bonnaroo lineup. Online, at fuse.tv/bonnaroo fans can find essential information on tickets, further line-up additions and interviews from last year's festival.

In addition, ATT Music will be hosting a live webcast of the event.  After the festival is over, you'll also be able to relive your experience with exclusive featured content only online at ATT Music.

Over the past two weeks, Sam Williams brought his energy across town and played with countless talented musicians from around the world. Sam played at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival with Allen Toussaint, the Funky Nation, and as part of the ephemeral all-star brass ensemble, The Midnight Disturbers featuring Stanton Moore, Mark Mullins, Skerik, Ben Ellman and more.

As a band, Big Sam's Funky Nation shared jam-packed jazzfest night-time bills with Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Jamie McLean Band, Soul Rebels Brass Band, Miami's Suenalo and more.

In addition to his many sit-ins and the Funky Nation, Big Sam led two all-night jam sessions, dubbed the "Funky Butt Revisited," named in honor of his famed club on Rampart Street. Sam hosted an array of special guests including friends Nicholas Payton, Luther Dickinson, Jonny Lang, Brian Coogan, Calvin Turner, Jesse McBride, Maurice Brown, Nikki Glaspie, Kirk Joseph, Terence Higgins, Topaz, and more. Read more about the shows via NewOrleans.com here and here.

Big Sam Williams is an exemplary frontman, even NPR has taken note:"You can't thrive in New Orleans unless you put on a show. The dominant culture is showmanship: people who actually address the audience, people who sing and howl and shout, people who wear their passions on their sleeves. It's the Irvin Mayfields, the Big Sam Williamses, the Trombone Shorties. ... Whatever the case, New Orleans is not impressed by introverted, mopey-looking bearded dudes. Today's strong, silent jazz types could learn something from how wildly the energetic are embraced there." - Patrick Jarenwattananon, NPR

After four rounds of BMI's Road to Bonnaroo competition, four sonically distinct bands – The Non-Commissioned Officers, How I Became the Bomb, Caitlin Rose, and Space Capone – have each earned a coveted spot at the 2010 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. Sponsored by BMI, the competition gives Nashville the chance to show off some of its most-praised indie acts on a global stage.

“The Road to Bonnaroo” competition took place over the course of four 8 off 8th shows—February 22, March 22, April 19 and May 17— at Nashville hot-spot The Mercy Lounge. The shows revitalized—and even redefined—Monday night music, as the venue consistently filled to capacity and late-comers braved one-in/one-out lines after 10 p.m.

As the contest’s live-action litmus test, eight bands performed three-song sets during each installment of the series. To select the evening’s top contender, an industry panel comprising local music journalists, bloggers, and 8 off 8th hosts contributed one half of the verdict, while fan-voting through on-site ballots determined the other half.

BMI’s involvement underscores the organization’s vital role as an early career counselor and support system for aspiring songwriters and bands. As an initial point of contact for burgeoning artists, BMI serves as a fundamental bridge, connecting promising talent with industry decision-makers, as well as invaluable opportunities, including performance slots on stages at SXSW, the Austin City Limits Music Festival, Lollapalooza, and of course, the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival.

Grace Potter & the Nocturnals have been chosen to headline the inaugural Bonnaroo Buzz Tour.  Support acts include fellow Bonnaroo acts Futurebirds and Gary Clark Jr.  The band, who proved their mettle as road warriors soon after forming at St Lawrence University, have kicked it up a notch following the release of their highly praised self-titled album last June.  Powering through a nonstop run of sold-out North American tour dates and TV appearances, their kinetic, captivating performances have brought the band increasing momentum and critical acclaim from around the country.

The latest single “Paris (Ooh La La)” is quickly rising on the Hot AC charts, while a performance on Conan two weeks ago generated sales jumps of 26% on the album and 36% on the single. That appearance followed Grace’s featured slot on Carson Daly's “Women Who Rock” week, along with Florence + the Machine and Lykke Li.

Coming up next will be an April concert as part of the Emmy-nominated music series Live From the Artists Den—filmed at sunset in Manhattan’s Bryant Park—which will air repeatedly throughout the summer (check local listings or www.artistsden.com). A live performance of “Paris (Ooh La La)” is featured on the just-released digital album Live From the Artists Den: Season 3, also containing tracks from the likes of Elvis Costello, Robert Plant and Ray LaMontagne.

GPN are not about to slow down now, with a full touring schedule stretching deep into 2011. They’re headlining the first-ever Bonnaroo Buzz tour, presented by Stubhub! kicking off May 17 culminating on June 10 with the band’s return to the Bonnaroo Festival, where they’ll share the main stage with a stellar lineup that also includes The Decemberists, My Morning Jacket and Arcade Fire. Later this summer, Grace will perform solo with Stevie Wonder and Janelle Monáe at the Hollywood Bowl on July 24.

Upcoming GPN tour includes dates with the Avett Brothers and Ben Harper. More dates to be announced. (Festival performances are denoted with asterisks.)

Superfly Presents and AC Entertainment are excited to announce that Bonnaroo now has an official theme song. The song, titled "Bonnaroo (Feel the Magic)," was written by the Del McCoury Band and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. This will hereby serve as the festival's National Anthem, its howl of joyous pride, its exclamation of exuberance, its own rally cry of sorts.

The video below was actually captured the third time this song was ever performed by the artists and was taken backstage at a gig on their "American Legacies Tour" that Del McCoury and Preservation Hall are currently in the midst of.  An official studio version is available for download thru iTunes via this link.

The video can be seen via this link. Bloggers feel free to share and embed.

Legendary hip-hop producer Mannie Fresh (Lil' Wayne, Juvenile) is currently working on a hip-hop remix of the song.

This is the way the song was written as recounted by Preservation Hall Creative Director and Tuba Man Ben Jaffe:

"Del's bus broke down outside of Chicago at 3am following our 'American Legacies' gig. Pres Hall turned around, picked up the stranded McCoury's on the side of the highway in the snow. Once aboard the bus, Ronnie McCoury presented the idea that the two groups work together to create an original Bonnaroo theme song in celebration of the 10th year anniversary. The melody and lyrics came to Preservation Hall vocalist Clint Maedgen as if the song had already been written.  An hour later, the first version of it was recorded on an I-Phone and this video was recorded backstage the following night."

The festival is very proud of its new theme song, and considering that Del and the McCoury's performed on the very first Bonnaroo as well as the festival's close connections to New Orleans, this song could not be more appropriate.

BMI will dispatch three of the freshest voices from Nashville’s thriving independent rock scene to the 2012 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. The 4th annual Road to Bonnaroo contest victors By Lightning, Wild Cub, and Fly Golden Eagle each earned slots in the festival’s Great Taste Lounge Brewed by Miller Lite, where they will serve as ambassadors of Nashville’s spit-polished Southern eclecticism.

BMI’S ROAD TO BONNAROO WINNERS

Saturday, June 9 – 2:40 p.m.
Led by singer/songwriter/film score composer Keegan DeWitt and young Nashville music mainstay Jeremy Bullock, Wild Cub made their official debut at SXSW this year at the Billy Reid & K-Swiss Shindig. The young band, who only officially formed last November, came together after touring over the past year around DeWitt’s prior solo releases as part of Daytrotter’s 4th Barnstormer tour, supporting Jeremy Messersmith. Wild Cub is currently putting the finishing touches on their debut LP, recorded in a makeshift studio in Bullock’s home and due out later this summer.

Sunday, June 10 – 12:00 p.m.
Ben Trimble has spearheaded Fly Golden Eagle for over five years, first playing shows with a boombox, and since evolving into a full-fledged band that has released three hook-laden albums and an EP. They've played a relentless amount of shows, both in their hometown of Nashville, as well as out and about, sharing bills with JEFF the Brotherhood, the Alabama Shakes, White Denim, Ranch Ghost, Strange Boys, Bear Hands, PUJOL, and Stardeath and White Dwarfs. They also played VICE magazine's day party at SXSW, and were one of three bands from across the world to be accepted for the Banff Indie Band Residency in 2011. Fly Golden Eagle’s full-length album, Swagger, was released last year.

Sunday, June 10 – 2:40 p.m.
By Lightning! is a Nashville-based collective of artists featuring Joel J. Dahl and Serai Zaffiro of De Novo Dahl, Kat Brock of Dixie Dirt, Matt Moody of Hands Down Eugene and Rod Kelly of Paris, Ontario, as well as Stanton Edward and Jerry Pentecost. Voted the Best New Band of 2011 by The Nashville Scene, the band released their debut LP, Left Hand Right Hand, in February 2012. The Nashville Scene praised the effort, saying, "Joel Dahl and Serai McAnulty’s revved-up hooks are served well by Brock’s rollicking-to-reflective juke-joint Americana. The result is a record rife with baroque pop that effortlessly shifts from a speedy, me-against-The-Man power-pop fist-pumper like 'New Union Tune' to the closing country weeper 'City.’"

Sponsored by BMI, Mercy Lounge, the Nashville Scene, and the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, BMI’s Road to Bonnaroo competition took place over the course of three 8 off 8th shows – February 27, March 26, and April 16 – at Nashville hot-spot The Mercy Lounge. As the live-action litmus test, eight bands performed three-song sets during each installment of the series. To select the evening’s top contender, an industry panel comprising local music journalists, bloggers, and 8 off 8th hosts contributed one half of the verdict, while fan-voting through onsite ballots determined the other half.

BMI’s involvement underscores the organization’s vital role as an early career counselor and support system for aspiring songwriters and bands. As an initial point of contact for burgeoning artists, BMI serves as a fundamental bridge, connecting promising talent with industry decision-makers, as well as invaluable opportunities, including performance slots on stages at SXSW, the Austin City Limits Music Festival, Lollapalooza, and the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival.
