Welland, Ontario-based reggae-rock band Street Pharmacy, hard at work putting the finishing touches on their follow-up to 2015’s Pharmanomics, have announced an upcoming single, “Roaming Souls,” due out this January 2018. The power trio, made up of Ryan Guay (vocals/guitar,) Jesse Robitaille (bass/vocals,) and Isaac Thompson (drums/vocals,) will follow the release with a winter tour throughout Ontario.

Street Pharmacy has built an impressive career with five full-length albums, including breakthrough album Free Delivery and the self-funded release The Legacy of Rudy, recorded on-site with Cuban musicians. Their appearance on Much Music’s TV series disBAND where they received a unanimous “thumbs up” votes from the judges, spawned the rock-fueled album Divorce. Frontman Ryan Guay’s close connection with megastars Walk off the Earth has led to multiple collaborations, including Street Pharmacy’s single “Old Time Beat,” as well as reinforcing the band’s DIY mentality. Street Pharmacy’s brand of hip-hop infused reggae is well represented by the 2012 track “It Ain’t That Crazy”, a collaboration with A-Plus from Souls of Mischief and Hieroglyphics.

“Roaming Souls” will be the first single off the band’s forthcoming album, due out in 2018. The song uses playful Christmas-time metaphors as a tool to inspire the inner-pariah. Carefully constructed lyrical contrast places the listener right into the unique mind of frontman Ryan Guay, who was misdiagnosed with a plethora of mental illnesses after an episode of prolonged brain swelling brought about by adult chicken pox before being properly diagnosed with encephalitis. The song’s subject matter tackles self-acceptance, even when you find the rest of the world nearly unrelatable, as the first step towards healing and growth.

With the steady growth of the modern American reggae scene, showcased by major genre-focused festivals and countless national tours, the emergence of a new wave of Canadian reggae bands, like MAGIC!, Bedouin Soundclash, Darenots, illScarlett, and Street Pharmacy, has highlighted the genre’s widespread appeal across geographical barriers. The upcoming release of “Roaming Souls” will serve as an inspiration call-to-action for the struggler inside us all.

North Carolina-based rockers Of Good Nature have returned from their studio time at White Star Sound with legendary producer Danny Kalb (Beck, Ben Harper, Foster the People, The Movement) with a handful of polished singles. The first of which, “Take Me Anywhere,” is set to be released on February 23rd of this year.

The east coast reggae scene has been responsible for some of the most fusion-friendly bands, constantly pushing their music beyond the traditional “island” sound. Of Good Nature stays true to this tradition of innovation with “Take Me Anywhere”. Mixing elements of funk, soul, pop, rock, and jazz with twists of reggaeton and hip-hop has spawned a truly unique and approachable sound, bound to push the band to a mainstream market.

The band has garnered quite the reputation, impressing fans with back-to-back appearances aboard Train’s Sail Across The Sun Cruise, as well as opening for top-tier headliners Sublime with Rome, Slightly Stoopid, Dirty Heads, Keller Williams, Blues Traveler, Common Kings, Steel Pulse, Iration, Passafire, The Movement, Tribal Seeds, Ballyhoo! and more. They’ve also received recognition for their studio work, seeing their debut album, Just Add Water, won Indie-Ville’s Reggae Album of the Year.

“Take Me Anywhere” tells a story sure to resonate with anyone craving new experiences. The use of perspective switches from verse to chorus act as refreshing tool to tell a well-rounded story with themes of wanting to escape from feeling stuck and calling out for help. Melodic horn lines, precise technically-exquisite drumming, and a vocal style reminiscent to the warmth of turn-of-the-century alternative combine to create an authentic style, all their own.

Passion motivates. It drives people to persevere. And passion makes great music. Case in point: the upcoming EP, Way Down Deep, from Chicago funk, soul, and R&B group Bumpus. The new EP will drop April 6th, 2018, and will be celebrated with a hometown release show at Martyrs’.

The Bumpus name has spawned a musical family, steeped in Chicago’s thriving music culture. Its hard-working current and former members contribute wholeheartedly to offshoots spanning the musical spectrum. Bandleader James Johnston was aiming to do just that by writing songs for a groove-friendly project titled Dance Floor Plans until his plans got derailed by a serious case of vocal cord polyps. Not to be sidelined from his passion, James rerouted his energy. He set his mind on bringing a new perspective into the mix.

The earthquake-adaptable foundation laid by Johnston and the rest of the band served as the perfect platform for a new star to emerge, and that star is Tina M. Howell. Ms. Howell’s lyrical substance and powerhouse vocals have become the clear focal point of Way Down Deep, reinvigorating Bumpus along the way. From the EP’s opener “Already Mine,” a stalker-themed retro funk burner, to the soul-searching “Anything,” Way Down Deep marks a bold new direction for the band expressed through heavy doses of Ms. Howell’s unfiltered personality.

The band will be playing around the Midwest in support of the album, with more dates in the works for the summer and fall. Way Down Deep showcases a new direction for an entity that has stood the test of time and has become a staple in the Chicago scene. With veteran leadership and a young core, Bumpus have built a new beginning, set to launch on April 6th, 2018.

Way Down Deep Tracklist:

1.) Already Mine
2.) Way Down Deep
3.) Deeper Still
4.) Keep Standing Up

Welland, Ontario based reggae-rockers Street Pharmacy have teamed up with east coast industry veterans and Rochester, New York legends Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad on their newest single “They Don’t Give a $$$$.” The song, available for streaming starting July 3rd, 2020, tackles the root of the world’s rising tensions amid a year full of crises. The song also cleverly outlines the ongoing manipulation of power and modern corruption over humanity-focused ambitions.

“They Don’t Give a $$$$” mixes two genres deeply rooted in social commentary and calls to action, reggae and punk, while adding a modern rock anthem-edged chorus that serves as a rallying cry. The relevant subject matter and serious tonal qualities of the composition makes for a timely song that addresses current world issues head on while calling on the people to demand change from the top down. “They Don’t Give a $$$$” sees Street Pharmacy frontman Ryan Guay showcase his penchant for cheeky lyrics with double-edged meanings throughout the song’s chorus and outro. His lyrical versatility allows him to appear unafraid to venture into new territory when society is screaming for it. “The chorus lyrics and the use of the cash register sample was intentional from the very beginning,” said Guay. “Using the cash register sample in the midst of a heavy, alternative rock-oriented chorus allows for a two-fold meaning to co-exist: the pseudo-use of profanity for the purpose of hammering home the severity of the message and, more obviously, the issues of corruption and wealth distribution that has plagued marginalized and poverty-stricken people for far too long.”

Guay’s lyrical and sample-based hook are perfectly augmented by Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad frontman and bassist, James Searl’s call to action in two reggae-rock infused verses. “It’s impossible to squeeze all of our world concerns into a verse chorus verse, so we thought it important to stress the call to action and awareness. I think we both had our political compasses tuned by the rock, reggae, and the hip hop of our youth.”

The collaboration between artists promotes further dialogue between changemakers within society, calling for a unification of citizens across the globe to promote a broad expansion of human rights and an end to oppression.

Street Pharmacy and Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad have both helped grow the American reggae scene, garnering critical acclaim, countless media placements across trendsetting blogs, national television, and festivals around North America. The latest effort “They Don’t Give A $$$$” executes a fusion of genres and lyrical relevancy that is bound to garner attention from ears all over. Florida-based groove phenoms, The Ellameno Beat, have returned with their follow-up to 2017’s acclaimed album Surface with a new single “Break Through,” due out October 30th, 2020. The track sees The Ellameno Beat mix their signature grooves and dub elements with a heavy psychedelic edge, signaling an expansion of their sonic vision.

Similar to the band’s current catalog, “Break Through” was written, performed, recorded and mixed by frontman Reggie Froom at his home studio. Finishing touches were provided by GRAMMY Award-winning mastering engineer Greg Calbi. The homegrown nature of the recording helped Froom navigate the societal complications of COVID-19, providing an extended period of introspection and instant access to a creative playground of gear. Seeing the DIY spirit through to the full extent, Froom has begun implementing homebuilt gear in the recording and mixing processes with this single, providing a unique sound signature.

Lyrically, the song pairs with the recording method and sonic soundscape, weaving a thematic thread of self-realization throughout. Froom explains “In this time of isolation, I’ve had the opportunity to reflect extensively on my life, and really take in where I am right now. This song is the result of that reflection, and my belief that, though it may sometimes feel impossible, we really can break through to the other side of the massive obstacle that seems to be in front of us all right now.”

The young group has seen considerable success with prior releases, selling out hometown shows, and garnering opening spots on national bills, as well as reaching #3 on the iTunes Reggae Album Charts and #5 on Billboard’s. Isolation brought many touring musicians back to the songwriting table, and “Break Through” is just a glimpse of the thoughtful music sure to come out of this period. Signal Fire and The Ellameno Beat have teamed up to release a new single, “False Reality,” due out February 12th, 2021. A sign of the times, this anthemic wake up call to the mislead was born as a remote collaboration between the two artists. Following up from prior releases late last year, both entities show a continuation of their prolific nature in contrast to the current period of industry stagnation, brought on by COVID-19.

“False Reality” tackles the disruption of political and societal progress caused by the combination of absurd conspiracy theories, op-eds-as-news, and selective framing from authority figures. The events of January 6th served as the catalyst to speak out, take action, and turn the song from a series of stems into a full-fledged musical calling-out of dissidents.

Addressing the increasing tensions and volatility head on, Reggie Froom, frontman of The Ellameno Beat stated “I’m directly voicing my feelings and frustrations about the current state of society. My statements are aimed directly at particular media sources, personalities, political figures, and citizens of this nation who have chosen to follow the lead of baseless conspiracy theory, and abandon any and all truth that does not serve their own self-interest.” Signal Fire bandleader Sean Gregory adds, “Corruption runs deep and always has. I think in the age of social media and information we are just starting to see it surface more.”

COVID-19 has accelerated our adaptation of technology, with working from home becoming the new normal. This trend, combined with increasing accessibility of high-powered tools, has seen a surge in the utilization of home studios and remote collaboration, allowing artists 24/7 access to studio time and instant access to like-minded collaborators. “False Reality” marks the first project produced and mixed primarily in Froom’s new custom-built home studio.

Signal Fire and The Ellameno Beat look to continue their roll of notable recent releases with “False Reality.” What started as sharing of ideas between Gregory and Froom blossomed into a topical and timely song, layering and producing an interwoven blend of the two’s inputs. Be sure to be on the lookout for more from these two as 2021 looks to shape up as a bounce back from a notorious year.

The Ellameno Beat, manned and armed by frontman Reggie Froom, released “Jump The Gun” on July 30th, 2021 across streaming services. The genre-warping track releases with an accompanying music video, both of which were created entirely in Froom’s home studio. An artist of multiple mediums and an avid music lover, Froom’s found inspiration in psychedelic rock, roots reggae, and funk, creating an output that is a personal blend all his own.

“Jump the Gun” showcases polished production and effects at its exterior, lyrically focusing on reflective ebb and flow of time’s passing, with Froom elaborating “My perception of time seems to be drastically changing day by day, and something about that absolutely terrifies yet excites me. ‘Jump the Gun’ is the anthem to those ever-evolving feelings.” The song continues a musical maturation of the artist’s non-complacent mindset, always looking to push their sound into new realms.

The Florida-based artist has seen considerable success early on in their career, garnering notable milestones and praise in charting, blogs, and live shows. Most recently, the band has evolved their surf-rock reggae roots incorporating modern synthesizer techniques on top of deep driving rhythms blending into a multidimensional soundscape. “Jump the Gun” marks the band’s third release in the past 12 months, further strengthening their new direction, while continuing to stay grounded in familiar foundations.

Froom’s home studio and DIY spirit have created a creative canvas that is sure to continue to blossom with the coming months and years. Follow the band below to stay up-to-date on upcoming shows and releases.

Giraffe Aftermath, a reggae/rock outfit from Vancouver, BC, are set to release “Trying to Change”, a brand new single, on November 13th, 2021. The single sees the band returning from a hiatus of almost seven years. The song oozes with reflection and acceptance, admitting to our faults and shortcomings while committing to make proper adaptations moving forward.

Giraffe Aftermath is a duo made up of longtime friends and creative collaborators Steve Hack and Luke Deville. The group incorporates elements of reggae, dub, rock, and hip-hop into a blend of full spectrum sound all within their home studios.

Lyrically divulging into psychological analysis of observations on self we can’t help but notice during our personal journeys, “Trying to Change” takes an approach against the mainstream grain, digging deeper for substance while balancing soothing melodies in an easily digestible format. With increased isolation during the past couple of years, self-reflection has become commonplace, creating an instantly resonatable message with most listeners. While the theme appears universal, the song's catalyst comes from personal experience.

“The song is about coming to the realization that you were having a negative outlook on life, bumming people out and always finding the problem in everything. Getting to a place where it was hard enough to be around myself, let alone other people being around me. I was finally seeing myself from outside of my body and thinking ‘yo that guy sucks!’” explains Hack. Bringing the theme to a full story arch, DeVille advises to “Take it slow and reward the small changes. If there’s something you’re trying to learn or change, find the smallest thing you can do and build from there.”

“Trying to Change” sees Giraffe Aftermath reemerging with an impressive sound and powerful message likely to catch the radar of music fans around the world. While November 13th marks the next chapter of Giraffe Aftermath, the band appears to have more surprises in store. Be sure to check them out below to stay up-to-date and future musical developments.
