Jeff Tweedy, best known as the founder of the pioneering Chicago rock band Wilco, will release a new album Sept. 16 through his own dBpm Records. The album, Sukierae (sue-key-ray), is not quite a solo effort. It is the debut release by the aptly-monikered duo, Tweedy, which features 20 new Jeff Tweedy-written songs, performed by Jeff in a musical collaboration with his 18-year-old son and drummer Spencer Tweedy.

“When I set out to make this record, I imagined it being a solo thing, but not in the sense of one guy strumming an acoustic guitar and singing,” Jeff said. “Solo to me meant that I would do everything – write the songs, play all the instruments and sing. But Spencer's been with me from the very beginning demo sessions, playing drums and helping the songs take shape. In that sense, the record is kind of like a solo album performed by a duo."

With Spencer on drums, Jeff handles his usual guitars and vocals, as well as bass and keyboards. Backing vocals on Sukierae come courtesy of Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of the Brooklyn-band Lucius. All can be heard here on the album’s first streaming track “I’ll Sing It” and on wilcoworld.net.

Musician Scott McCaughey (R.E.M., The Minus Five, The Baseball Project) lends additional keyboard support on Sukierae.

Jeff embarks on a summer of North American touring this week in Detroit, backed by a new band that includes Spencer plus bassist Darin Grey, guitarist Jim Elkington and keyboardist Liam Cunningham. Jeff and his newly-formed band will tape an episode of Austin City Limits on June 20 as part of the acclaimed PBS series’ 40th anniversary season and be guests of Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show on July 24.

Jeff Tweedy is a Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and producer. Spencer Tweedy, despite his young age, is a longtime member of the Chicago band The Blisters and handled drum duties on the latest album by soul and gospel legend Mavis Staples.

Nonesuch Records will release two new Wilco collections on November 17 in conjunction with the influential Chicago band’s 20th anniversary. The first, Alpha Mike Foxtrot, is a 4-CD/4-LP/DIGITAL-box-set of rare studio and live recordings collected from the band’s extensive audio archives. The second, What’s Your 20, is a 2-CD/DIGITAL compilation of essential tracks culled from the band’s previously released studio recordings.

Both collections are produced by Grammy-nominated producer Cheryl Pawelski, co-founder of Omnivore Recordings, whose credits include Big Star’s Keep an Eye on the Sky, The Band’s A Musical History and Townes Van Zandt’s Sunshine Boy: The Unheard Studio Sessions and Demos 1971–1972. These are the first compilations of Wilco music of any kind. They are available now for pre-order at Wilcoworld.net, Nonesuch.com, iTunes and Amazon; Alpha Mike Foxtrot orders include a free instant download of “A Magazine Called Sunset,” a rarity that Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy calls “a mysterious omission from an official recorded output and a real attempt at complete pop music.”

“Like a lot of fans, I had collected these straggling tracks over the past two decades of following Wilco’s every move,” Pawelski said.  “Alpha Mike Foxtrot includes almost every unique, essential performance that appeared on soundtracks, tribute albums and B-sides—and there are probably a few surprises for even the sharpest collector. This set presents an alternate history of the band, kind of a sideways view, and ultimately, it’s a super-fun listening experience.”

Alpha Mike Foxtrot features 64 pages of liner notes that include track-by-track recollections from Tweedy, notes by band members Nels Cline and John Stirratt, and reflections from members of Wilco’s extended professional family. The booklet also showcases dozens of archival and never-before-seen photos from a wide array of photographers chronicling all phases of the band’s career.

What’s Your 20 gathers songs from Wilco’s eight studio albums plus two songs from Mermaid Avenue, the collection of Woody Guthrie-penned tunes set to music by Wilco and Billy Bragg.

In early December, Wilco will play six shows at Chicago’s Riviera Theatre, adding to the string of anniversary concerts that include performances at The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY and more. Set lists will change each night and feature songs from every era of Wilco’s two-decade career.  Tickets for the Chicago concerts are on sale this Friday and a complete list of dates is below.

Wilco appears on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday, October 27.

Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival returns to the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) in North Adams, MA on June 26-28, 2015. A limited number of specially-priced $124 early bird tickets go on sale Friday, at 10 a.m. ET through solidsoundfestival.com, massmoca.org and the MASS MoCA box office (413.662.2111). Kids tickets (ages 7-10) for $50 also go on sale Friday.

The three-day event, conceived by Wilco and inaugurated in 2010, will again present Wilco as hosts and headliners, as well as a wide range of soon-to-be-announced musical performances on four stages, plus Wilco-member-side-projects, a comedy cabaret hosted by John Hodgman and much more.
“We want to make it unique every year, something you can only experience here,” Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy told Rolling Stone at the 2013 festival.

The 2015 festival will continue in the tradition of previous festivals, which have, in addition to offering a broad range of musical performers and comedians, included falconry and birds of prey demonstrations, a dunk tank, an all-covers set by Wilco, a naturalist hike, axe-restoration instruction, a live version of NPR’s Radiolab and more, all set amidst the sprawling campus of the country’s largest contemporary art museum.

In addition to tickets, this Friday opens reservations for campsites at Solid Ground, the festival’s official campsite, and for seats on the Peter Pan chartered- bus service to and from the festival from New York City.

Wilco’s just released Alpha Mike Foxtrot: Rare Tracks 1994-2014 and What’s Your 20?: Essential Tracks. Alpha Mike Foxtrot is a 4-CD/4-LP/DIGITAL-box-set of rare studio and live recordings collected from the band’s extensive audio archives. What’s Your Twenty? is a 2-CD/DIGITAL compilation of essential tracks culled from the band’s previously released studio recordings.

Fans attending this year’s Solid Sound Festival (June 26-28 at MASS MoCA in North Adams, MA) will be treated to a unique Wilco performance. On Friday evening and for the first time ever, band members will unplug their instruments to perform a full set of Wilco tunes acoustically. On its recent tour Wilco performed brief, intimate acoustic sets within the concert’s encores, but this will be the first time the band unplugs for an extended performance.

“Right now we’re thinking about playing somewhat mirrored sets on Friday and Saturday nights – on Friday, the main set will be stripped down and acoustic and the encores will be electric,” Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy said. “On Saturday we’ll flip it. Start big and loud and finish acoustically. We’ll see how it goes. It’ll be a bit of an experiment, but the Solid Sound audience is usually game for whatever we throw at them.”

He continues, “It’s been a great experience for the six of us to perform our songs this way. It’s a bit of a rediscovery of the songs and a way for us to reconnect musically with one another. I found myself really looking forward to this part of the set every night on the most recent tour.”

Hear Wilco's acoustic performance of "Casino Queen" on May 7 in Indianapolis.

Limited quantities of three-day and single-day tickets still remain for the upcoming festival, with fewer than 250 tickets available for Saturday. Tickets are available through solidsoundfestival.com.

In other news: Wilco’s dBpm Records will release Beyond The Fleeting Moment: Wilco Concert Posters 2004-2014 on June 26. An archival poster book, which will be available for the first time at the Solid Sound Festival, is available for pre-order now through the Wilco store

The 224-page hardcover book features more than 200 concert posters reprinted on heavyweight paper and richly reproduced to accurately reflect each poster’s original detail. Included are posters from more than 50 designers plus rare live photographs by Zoran Orlic. Beyond The Fleeting Moment also features a foreword by designer Lawrence Azerrad of LADdesign and an introduction by MASS MoCA’s Founding Director Joseph Thompson.

Every Other Summer, a full-length documentary film about Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival, is available to buy or rent now via Vimeo On Demand. Directed by Christoph Green and Brendan Canty of Trixie Films and shot in 2013, it documents the Chicago band’s three-day music and arts gathering that takes place at MASS MoCA in North Adams, MA. The film’s title references how frequently the festival is held.

In addition to performances by Wilco, Neko Case, Yo La Tengo, The Dream Syndicate, Lucius, Foxygen, White Denim, Sam Amidon, Sean Rowe, The Relatives and more, plus appearances by comedians Reggie Watts, John Hodgman and Jen Kirkman, Every Other Summer offers a behind-the-scenes look at the festival’s utopian vibe and the impact it has had on the small Rust Belt town where it takes place.

“We came into the project knowing that there would be music and art in a beautiful location,” co-director Green said. “We also knew from years of working with Wilco that there is a very close bond between the band and their fans that really transcends any musician/audience relationship that we have experienced. What we really didn't expect was the way that the town itself and its people, the museum, the musicians, the volunteers and the area’s history all came together to create something sublime and beautiful.”

In 2013, the population of North Adams, MA was 13,533 a number that has steadily decreased for the past two decades. This year Solid Sound will bring upward of 10,000 attendees, artists and supporting personnel to The Berkshires, a number that has steadily increased with each summer.

"Festivals like this which don't have the bottom line as their primary motivator almost have to exist in towns like North Adams, co-director Canty said. “Long neglected by the corporate oligarchs and then abandoned by the people formerly known as the working class (now known as the unemployed), the remaining citizens are hungry for anything to come in to fill the void. MASS MoCA and the Solid Sound Festival fill that void.”

“When you are looking at a painting you aren’t so mesmerized by that one piece of art as much as you are by the thought that someone created it,” Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy said. “That’s the part that is inspiring and beautiful. As long as there are people making things, there will always be a community where people find what they need. Solid Sound is a part of that community.”

“This is a generous film: lots of great music, quirky characters and authentic sense of place,” said Joseph Thompson, Director of MASS MoCA.

Every Other Summer is a Trixie Films production in association with dBpm Records.

Single-day tickets for Saturday, June 27 are sold out. Limited quantities of single-day tickets for Friday, June 26 and Sunday, June 28 remain. Tickets are available through solidsoundfestival.com.

Wilco fans have much to anticipate and band members will soon see their frequent flier account balances rise rapidly with imminent performances on four continents, including a long-anticipated tour of South America in October.

“It’s not an understatement to say our South American fans are among our most enthusiastic in the world,” Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy said. “We hear from them often, and many of them have made trips to see Wilco in places far from their homes. They’ve been waiting patiently a long time for us to come there, and I am happy to say the wait is over. Get ready South America! We’ll be there soon!”

In its 21-year history Wilco has performed just once in South America, in 2005 at Rio de Janeiro’s TIM Festival. The October tour combines festival appearances and headlining concerts in Brazil, Uruguay, Chile and Argentina.  (Full dates below.)

Just prior to the South American tour a brief headlining run in September brings Wilco to the legendary Fillmore in San Francisco for a five-night stand, as well as three shows at Los Angeles’ Ace Theatre, plus additional concerts in Salt Lake City, Boise, Seattle and Portland.

Wilco’s summer touring kicks off in a couple weeks, with shows in West Virginia, Hunter, NY and Philadelphia before the band heads to Europe for much of June and July. Among many concert dates, the band makes debut appearances in Montenegro and Poland. In late July, Wilco takes a quick visit to Japan for a headlining spot at Fuji Rock and then finishes the summer with a run of dates in the North American Midwest including a homecoming show at Chicago’s Millennium Park on August 21. Later in the year Wilco returns to Europe with a tour that culminates in a special night at London’s Brixton Academy on November 19.

Wilco’s latest album, Star Wars, is out now on the band’s own dBpm Records. Praised by fans and lauded by critics, the album earned a perfect 100 in UK’s The Independent newspaper and 4.5/5 stars in Rolling Stone.

The Chicago band Wilco will release their 10th studio album,Schmilco, on Sept. 9, with a special early release for vinyl on Tuesday, Sept. 6 in the US. Schmilco features 12 new songs written by Jeff Tweedy and it is the third release on the band’s own dBpm Records. It follows Star Wars, which was released for free and as a surprise in July 2015.

Mostly an acoustic collection,Schmilco bears neither the vicious, fuzz-glam guitars of Star Wars, nor the dazzling, baroque-ish arrangements that fans have come to expect from Wilco. But in their place is a spaciousness and chaos that might feel welcome after 20-some years of enjoyed but now-familiar Wilco releases. It is an intentionally loose affair.

Schmilco finds band leader Tweedy in a state of alienation: how to cope with dissonance between self-identity and the public perception of his band – to maintain an innocence and earnestness even as some have come to see him as more (or less) than human, and Wilco as something other than six musicians?

“I think this record is ‘joyously negative’,” Tweedy said. “It’s sad in a lot of ways but not in any that reach a conclusion of doom or hopelessness… I just had a lot of fun being sour about the things that upset me.”

On Thursday, Wilco shared “Locator” from the forthcoming album and today shares “If I Ever Was A Child.” Both songs are available as an instant download upon pre-ordering the album via Wilcoworld.net.

Recorded at the band’s Chicago studio the Loft,Schmilco is produced by Jeff Tweedy and Tom Schick.

Wilco is Jeff Tweedy, John Stirratt, Nels Cline, Glenn Kotche, Patrick Sansone and Mikael Jorgensen.

Wilco fans can have an early listen to the band’s forthcoming album Schmilco on Tuesday, Sept. 6, three days before the album’s official worldwide release Sept. 9. But it won’t be via an early online stream; instead, the Chicago band is showing its support for independent record stores — and the vinyl format in general — by encouraging fans to attend I Heard Schmilco listening parties at locations across the US and Canada. Hosting stores will play the album in its entirety, on vinyl, and offer attendees a chance to win unique prizes including slipmats featuring album-cover artist Joan Cornellà’s artwork. A list of participating stores is HERE. Vinyl copies of Schmilco will be available for purchase on Sept. 6 across the US at all retail outlets (physical stores and online shops) and all formats (CD & online) will be available Sept. 9.

As Wilco’s summer tour continues the band returns to St. Louis on Wednesday to play The Fox Theatre. While in town, Wilco makes a pre-show stop at band leader Jeff Tweedy’s former employer Euclid Records for a special in-store performance and signing. Preorder for Schmilco is available now at Euclid for guaranteed entry.

Tweedy’s insider guide to Chicago is currently featured on the men’s e-commerce retail site Huckberry. Field Guide: Chicago is a conversation and photo essay about Chicago that features intimate photos of Tweedy in and around the city, as well as a look into Wilco’s recording studio The Loft. The site also features a dedicated Wilco shop with exclusive Wilco products and autographed vinyl.

Schmilco is Wilco’s 10th studio album and features 12 new songs written by Tweedy. It is the third Wilco release on the band’s own dBpm Records, and it follows Star Wars, which was released for free and as a surprise, in July 2015.

Mostly an acoustic collection, Schmilco bears neither the vicious, fuzz-glam guitars of Star Wars, nor the dazzling, baroque-ish arrangements that fans have come to expect from Wilco. But in their place is a spaciousness and chaos that might feel welcome after 20-some years of enjoyed but now-familiar Wilco releases. It is an intentionally loose affair.

Recorded at the band’s Chicago studio the Loft, Schmilco is produced by Jeff Tweedy and Tom Schick.

Wilco is encouraging fans to gather together on September 6 at local independent record stores across North America to hear Schmilco for the first time. Stores hosting “I Heard Schmilco” parties are currently located in 48 US states, with additional locations in Canada and a special listening engagement at the End of the Road Festival in North Dorset, UK. Stores will play the album in its entirety, on vinyl, and offer attendees a chance to win unique prizes including slipmats featuring album-cover artist Joan Cornella’s artwork. A current list of participating stores is HERE. Vinyl copies of Schmilco will be available for purchase on Sept. 6 across the US at all retail outlets (physical stores and online shops) and all formats (CD & online) will be available on Sept. 9 worldwide.

Wilco is unveiling a series of short video clips this week through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to promote the in-store events. The first clip was created by John Hodgman and features the comedian in the Bangor, ME airport with a giraffe. See it HERE and watch for more videos this week.

Every band member talks Schmilco with the online music publication Consequence of Sound. Read the story HERE and watch the site for additional Wilco-related content and interviews throughout the week.

Nonesuch Records releases The Following Mountain, the newest solo album by experimental folk artist, singer and multi-instrumentalist Sam Amidon, on May 26, 2017. Created with producer Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, Regina Spektor) and Amidon’s frequent collaborator Shahzad Ismaily, the album represents a new approach for Amidon, who shifts here from his previous norm of re-working traditional folk songs and presents nine wholly original compositions, with some lyrics drawing on traditional sources. The album features a rare guest appearance by drummer Milford Graves, known initially for his work in the 1960s with free jazz legends Albert Ayler, and Sonny Sharrock. The Following Mountain is available to preorder from iTunes, the Sam Amidon Store and the Nonesuch Store, with an instant download of the album track “Juma Mountain.” Nonesuch Store pre-orders also include a limited-edition print autographed by Amidon. Spring tour dates for Sam Amidon are listed below.

The Following Mountain was made during two distinct recording sessions: an initial weekend in Brooklyn where Ismaily and Amidon brought in Graves, percussionist Juma Sultan (Jimi Hendrix), and saxophonist Sam Gendel for a heavily improvised session; followed by time in the studio over the summer in London, where Amidon worked with Abrahams to shape and develop the songs.

“The Following Mountain is a walk through the thickets of the imagination,” Amidon said, “... a personal mythology of sounds and visions and characters. It is my first album of original music, but is still linked to the Appalachian music I love, as well as improvisation, beats, Don Cherry, Vermont, London."

The Following Mountain is Amidon’s sixth album and follows Lily-O, his 2014 Nonesuch Records collaboration with guitarist Bill Frisell.

Wilco will play mid-November concerts in St. Louis, MO and St. Paul, MN to close out their 2017 touring schedule. The shows – at The Pageant in St. Louis on Nov. 13 and at The Palace Theatre in St. Paul on Nov. 15 and 16 – will be the last chance for fans to see the band perform for a while, as it takes a hiatus from touring for most, if not all, of 2018 to record new material and for individual members to pursue other projects. Tickets are available to purchase Friday, Sept. 15 via wilcoworld.net.

In other news, Wilco leader Jeff Tweedy has once again partnered with soul and gospel singer, activist and Kennedy Center Honoree Mavis Staples on her new album, If All I Was Was Black.

“An incendiary soul album that wrestles with racism, violence, and division but ultimately insists on hope” (Entertainment Weekly), If All I Was Was Black will be released by Anti- Records on Nov. 11; its title track is streaming now at NPR Music. The album marks Tweedy’s third production collaboration with Staples and the first of songs composed by Tweedy entirely for Staples’ legendary voice.

Wilco is back on the road this month with concerts resuming Sept. 22 in Lincoln, NE and continuing with stops in Oklahoma, New Mexico, multiple concerts in Texas and more. Full dates follow.  The band’s latest album, Schmilco, is available now on dBpm Records. Hailed as “emotionally resonant” and “quietly wondrous ” by The AV Club, it is the band’s 10th studio album.

Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy will embark on a solo acoustic tour of North America in April in support of his recently released album Together At Last. The tour goes on sale tomorrow (Feb. 9) via Wilcoworld.net and includes performances in multiple Canadian cities rarely visited by Tweedy as a solo performer or with his band Wilco, as well as concerts in several Eastern US cities including the High Water Festival in Charleston, SC and later, in June, at the Clearwater Festival in Croton-on-Hudson, NY.

Tweedy touring then resumes in September with several European solo performances including End of the Road Festival in Wiltshire, UK and Into The Great Wide Open in Vlieland, NL. A complete list of tour dates is below.

Working with no set list, the Wilco frontman offers reworked versions of familiar fan favorites as well as deep tracks from his expansive catalog. Equipped with only an acoustic guitar and a droll sense of humor, Tweedy frequently encourages audience participation, resulting in a concert experience that is as intimate and compelling as it is entertaining.

Recorded at Tweedy’s Chicago studio The Loft and released in June 2017, Together At Last (dBpm Records) features intimate renditions of 11 songs previously released by Wilco and by Tweedy’s occasional side projects Loose Fur and Golden Smog.  It is available everywhere now.
