Sat, 06/21/2008 - 11:28 am

Thanks to all of you who were able to come out and see DSO this spring on our winding road to Manchester, TN. Along the way we were honored to welcome two very special guests as Rob Eaton Jr. joined DSO for "Easy Wind" on the first night and Phish's Mike Gordon sat in for a few tunes on both nights at Higher Ground in VT. The end of the road brought DSO to Bonnaroo greeted by thousands of fans under 'The Other Tent' for their Late Night slot on Thursday night. Highlights include a highly energetic and crowd-participated Tennessee Jed, and a mega-sandwich to end the show: I Need a Miracle> Shakedown St> Drums> Space> Alligator> Attics of My Life> Not Fade Away (reprise).

All Good Vibes Tour Kicks Off

If Bonnaroo and Langerado didn't tip you off yet, it's festival season! We'll also be playing quite a few Midwestern and mid-Atlantic shows scattered between this year's All Good, 10,000 Lakes Festival, Gathering of the Vibes and Mighty High Festivals - so we hope to see you soon! Visit our website for DSO dates in your area.

A Slingshot On Mars Tour Preview

Following a stellar summer tour full of great festivals and friends we are excited to hit the road again for the Slingshot On Mars Tour starting September 9th. Upcoming dates include stops in Knoxville and Memphis, TN, Terrapin Hill Farm in KY and the Orange Peel in Asheville, NC. Then we make first time stops at the Greenfield Lake Amphitheatre in Wilmington, NC and the Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville, VA before a weekend run through some of our favorite east coast stops including The Norva, Rams Head Live and 9:30 Club. Along the way we will celebrate our time in Baltimore and DC with a Cap Centre Weekend. On 9/17 and 9/18 DSO will choose from the legendary Grateful Dead Capital Centre shows and will recreate that show in its entirety. We will then round off our tour with a special acoustic set at Mexicali Live along with stops in Munhall, PA, Wilmington, DE, Philadelphia, Albany, Toads Place in New Haven, CT, Syracuse, Northampton and Lowell, MA before closing out the tour in the 'Big Apple' at the Nokia Theatre.

Visit our Tour Dates Page for complete details.

From A City Near You Tour

DSO is celebrating our return to the West Coast by recreating shows From a City Near You. Each night Dark Star will choose a Grateful Dead show from a city close to that venue and will recreate that show in its entirety. This will be the perfect time to gather your tour buddies and relive the experience or for you to see that show for the first time that you have only heard stories about.

The tour kicks off in the "Golden State" with 2 nights in good ole San Francisco at the Regency Ballroom. From there we head up to Sacramento then over to the banks of Lake Tahoe for a stop at the Crystal Bay Club Casino before returning to Cali for shows in Anaheim and LA before a Saturday night stop in 'Sin City' and a Sunday/Monday run at the Belly Up Tavern in Solona Beach. The last week of tour brings us back to the Mile High City with stops in Tempe and Flagstaff AZ, Salt Lake City and the tour Closer at the Fillmore in Denver.

Visit our Tour Dates Page for complete details.

The Rex Foundation and DSO

In addition to continuing the Grateful Dead concert experience at our shows we are working with The Rex Foundation to continue their legacy of giving. We have recently created a donation module on our fanclub-ticketing page that allows you to make a donation to the Rex Foundation while purchasing tickets to our shows.

For our summer tour former Grateful Dead tie-dye artist Courtenay Pollock designed a backdrop for us. We are pleased to raffle this off with part of the proceeds benefiting the Rex Foundation. If you would like to bid on this one of a kind tie-dye design on 4 10' x 10' panels, please send your bid and contact info to: [email protected].

August 9, 2010 marks the 15 year anniversary of legendary musician and Grateful Dead co-founder Jerry Garcia's death. As a way to honor his musical and community legacy, the gifted musicians on this compilation have generously contributed stirring live performances of Jerry Garcia songs to benefit the Rex Foundation. The album includes four exclusive previously unreleased live Garcia songs from Phish, Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers, The String Cheese Incident, and Keller & The Keels. Other artists in the order they appear on the album are: Railroad Earth, The Black Crowes, Moonalice, Yonder Mountain String Band, The Waybacks, Widespread Panic, Hot Buttered Rum, and Steve Kimock Crazy Engine. All proceeds are a contribution to the Rex Foundation.

Dark Star Orchestra has announced a pair of year closing shows at Montclair, NJ’s Wellmont Theatre on December 30 and 31. The group’s Cosmic New Year’s Eve Celebration will feature three sets a night: on December 30, the group will kick off its three-set show with a special, rare acoustic set and on December 31 the group will recreate classic sets from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. VIP Tickets for the December 31 performance include an exclusive poster, access to VIP section with private bar and an express line into venue. The members of Dark Star Orchestra will perform their first ever recreation of a historic Jerry Garcia Band set, with special guest Donna Jean Godchaux (who sang with Jerry Band at the original show) at The Werk Out Festival this weekend in Bellefontaine, OH.

While the Grateful Dead performed approximately 2300 concerts over 30 years, the Dark Star Orchestra is closing in on their 2000th show, in just over 14 years, about half the time it took the Dead to complete that cycle. DSO’s 2000th performance will take place at the State Theatre in Ithaca, NY on November 19. Additional tour highlights include a free performance at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco; a two-night stand in NYC at the Nokia Theater over Thanksgiving weekend; an all-acoustic show at the intimate Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, NY; a two-night stand at the 930 Club in Washington DC, and many more.  Details on these special shows are forthcoming and tickets for all DSO’s fall tour and NYE Run shows are available at www.darkstarorchestra.net.

2,000 Show Retrospective

Just over 14 years ago, on November 11, 1997 at Martyrs in Chicago, Dark Star Orchestra unveiled its first ever Grateful Dead historic show recreation by performing the 10/8/81 set from Copenhagen. At the time, the band was thrilled for the weekly series of four gigs - no one knew the long strange trip would surpass this epic 2000 show milestone. Within months after forming, the relatively new cultural phenomenon known as the world wide web helped spread the word of DSO's stunningly accurate continuations of the live Grateful Dead experience when band's page on the now-defunct site MP3.com started getting countless hits.

Millions of road miles later, DSO has toured the world and along the way, they've featured guest performances from original Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, Donna Jean Godchaux-Mackay, Vince Welnick, and Tom Constanten. Longtime Dead soundman Dan Healy even toured with the band, mixing them and said " "There are moments where I can close my eyes and go back 30 years and have it be every bit as rewarding and satisfying."  Over the years, many other notable guests have joined Dark Star Orchestra on stage including Mike Gordon and Jon Fishman of Phish, Warren Haynes, Steve Kimock, Peter Rowan, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Keller Williams, Martin Fierro, David Gans, David Nelson, Henry Kaiser and many more.

Dark Star Orchestra is honored to cross the threshold into the 2000s - since the Grateful Dead performed in the neighborhood of 2300 shows - the milestone is more than noteworthy. Without the support of the vast community of Deadheads young and old, as well as fans that have traveled countless miles to see them, DSO could not have made it here; it's this support that keeps them going. The respect is mutual and comes across in that invisible space between the PA speakers and the ears of the audience: the real living love is that intangible music which makes us all so happy.

Cosmic New Year's Run

We are excited to welcome 2012 with a 4 night east coast NYE run. On the 30th we will play a special 3 set show that will kick off with an acoustic set. Then, on NYE we will bid good night to 2011 with a GD decade retrospective, recreating a classic set from the 60's, 70's and 80's.

Tickets to the 28th and 29th are available now via DSOtix.

Tickets for the 30th are available HERE and NYE tickets are available HERE.

2012: Across The Pond and Beyond

It seems fitting, only a week from our 2,000th show we would be announcing a show at the venue where this long strange trip began. While in Chicago for our show at The Vic we will also play a special show as Terrapin Nation at Martyr's on Monday February 6. Stay tuned as more dates for our Southbound Winter Tour will be announced in the coming weeks.

In addition to that stateside show we have also added a show to round out our trip to Amsterdam for Jam in the Dam VI. We will be playing The Garage in London on Sunday March 18. For this special show we will be recreating a historic London show in it's entirety from the Grateful Dead's Europe '72 Tour.

A Grand Introduction

What a great way to kick into our 2nd set in the nation's capitol: Dark Star was proud to welcome Senator Al Franken to the stage of the 9:30 Club on Friday December 2. Adding humor and history, the Senator introduced the band with allusions to the intro he gave to the Dead at Radio City Music Hall in 1980. Maybe you were there in New York and remember...but if not, you can watch last Friday's introduction here.

Spring Tour West

We are excited to announce our Spring Tour, following on the heels of our trip to Europe! Back to some of our favorite haunts on the Left Coast, we'll travel from Seattle south to Solana Beach, including 3 nights at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. See the full list on our tour page.
Cosmic New Year's Run

Don't have plans for New Year's Eve yet? How about joining us for a 4 night East Coast Party? Our Cosmic New Year's Run starts in Baltimore at Ram's Head Live on December 28th. From there we'll take it into the 29th at the Electric Factory in Philly, where we'll recreate a 3-set show including acoustic and electric sets. The 2 nights at the Wellmont in Montclair, NJ will both be 3-set shows - including an acoustic first set on the 30th. On NYE we will bid good night to 2011 with a GD decade retrospective, recreating 3 classic sets from the 60's, 70's and 80's.

Tickets to the 28th and 29th are still available via DSOtix.

Tickets for the 30th are available HERE and NYE tickets are available HERE.

Helping Hungry Strangers

At the Dark Star shows on Dec. 5th, 7th, 9th, and 10th, good fans from all around the Northeast brought food and other necessities to be delivered to local food banks, pantries, and shelters. Thanks to you, and to the awesome people who organize Strangers Helping Strangers, music fans who have been helping end hunger locally since 1997.

Dark Star Orchestra is thrilled to announce the band’s first Jamaican excursion entitled ‘Jam in the Sand.’  The event is anchored by a partnership with Island Gigs, who will be hosting the event at the five-star, adults-only, all-inclusive Breezes Grand Resort in Negril, Jamaica, March 1-5, 2013. After performing in Japan in 2011 and with their quickly approaching March 2012 shows in London and Amsterdam, Dark Star Orchestra continues their international touring with this announcement of their first ever land-based shows in the Caribbean. Having performed to sold out audiences at home and abroad, Dark Star Orchestra is the world’s most talented and acclaimed Grateful Dead tribute act. Over their nearly 15 years and more than 2000 shows together, the band has performed with many talented artists, including five original members of the Grateful Dead, and their live performances have been acclaimed by Rolling Stone, USA Today and National Public Radio. Esteemed looping soloist, Keller Williams, will be joining DSO on the sandy beaches and performing three sets at Jam in the Sand. Breezes Grand Negril is the flagship of the Breezes fleet of super inclusive resorts and commands an impressive stretch of Negril's breathtaking beach. During the daytime the unbelievable beach invites lovers of water sports to windsurf, scuba dive, sail a sunfish or simply do nothing at all. At night attendees will be treated to intimate concerts by Dark Star Orchestra and Keller Williams - right on the beach, under the stars and moonlight. Other amenities include six classic restaurants offering French, Italian, Japanese, Jamaican cuisine, and continental menus, plus breakfast and luncheon buffets galore. From great live music and bottomless booze to all the meals, snacks, and watersports, it will be an amazing experience Deadheads will never forget. Now one of the hottest destinations in the Caribbean, the seven-mile beach of North Negril offers laid back charm for people looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Uncover Negril's best kept secret, five miles of winding coral cliffs. Spend a free day cliff-diving, snorkeling and exploring underground caves at places like Rick's Cafe and The Rock House. Then, be ready for one of the most impressive sunsets you've experienced as you kick back with a Jamaican rum punch and watch the sky turn pink before it falls dark. The magic of Negril is that it still has kept its laid back charm after all these years.Island Gigs is the producer of such noteworthy music events in Jamaica including Gov’t Mule’s ‘Island Exodus,’ Little Feat’s ‘Feat Fan Excursion,’ and many more.

Legend Valley, Central Ohio’s premier festival grounds, is once again buzzing with activity with the announcement of the Dark Star Jubilee – a multi-day, multi-stage music festival happening August 31 – September 2 in Thornville, Ohio. The new home of Dark Star Orchestra’s own summer festival – which is the former home to some of the most legendary outdoor Grateful Dead concerts (at the venue formerly known as Buckeye Lake Music Center) - will feature three nights of full DSO sets. Additional artists national and regional acts, including some of everyone’s favorite Grateful Family members, will be announced on the lineup in due time. The Dark Star Jubilee is the fourth major music festival to be hosted within one of the most beautiful concert settings in the U.S. The comfortable confines of Legend Valley’s soft hills and mellow woods is where DSO’s six guys and a girl will celebrate the end of summer with three nights of Dark Star Orchestra, as well as plenty of food and artisan vendors, on-site camping, and two alternating stages to keep fans of all ages rockin’ all weekend long. Make plans to wrap up the summer festival season at the Dark Star Jubilee August 31 - September 2.

With some of the festivals already announced, it's time to tell you about Dark Star Orchestra's Meet Me At The Jubilee Summer Tour 2012, an over two-month trek that guarantees you'll want to hit the road and won't be back til the fall. When do the gates open?

Gates to the Dark Star Jubilee open at 12:00pm on Friday, August 31 and Close at 12:00pm on Monday, September 2.

I ordered my tickets online, how do I get them?

All tickets for Dark Star Jubilee will need to be printed at home. After you complete your ticket purchase, Log In to MissionTix to print your tickets. Your print at home tickets will be scanned at the gate and you will receive a wristband for each ticket purchased. Please contact MissionTix at [email protected] for any questions.

Can we leave the festival grounds and re-enter?

Yes, but you will need to go through the main entrance each time you leave and return. To re-enter you will need your wristband. You will not be able to leave by car from within the concert venue. If you park and camp outside of the concert venue, you are permitted to leave by car and return.

What will you be providing?

Expect good and simple camping on a grassy knoll with fellow music lovers. On-site provisions will include port-a-johns, designated water stations, first aid medical unit, children's activities area, ATM's and shower trailers (for a nominal fee), Ice, Food concessions (of many dietary preferences), Arts & Crafts, and Camp supplies will be available for sale from official vendors. Please do not buy from unregistered vendors. No electricity or public phones are available. This is a rain or shine event. Pack for possible inclement weather.

What emergency services will be available on site? What should I do if I need emergency assistance (medical, towing, locksmith, etc.)?

There will be 24-hour security and EMT's. If you need emergency medical attention, contact the nearest security official, go to the medical tent, ask a Dark Star Jubilee staff member or volunteer or check at the merchandise booth for assistance.

Where should I go if I lose track of my child, or if I find a child who is lost?

If you find a lost child or cannot locate your own, please go to the medical te nt or locate a staff person.

Where should I go if I lose my keys, my wallet or my friends?

What should I do if I find someone's stuff? The Lost and Found will be located at the Dark Star Jubilee merchandise tent until after the show Sunday night. We suggest you bring an extra key to your car and/or your key code - this makes getting a replacement should yours be lost a lot easier.

Will pets be allowed in the venue / camp grounds?

NO PETS!!! PLEASE LEAVE YOUR PETS AT HOME. If a pet is found in your car you will be turned away - regardless how long you have waited in line or if you have tickets or not. Here is a list of local dog kennels. - Benchmark Pet Services- 30 mins away in Reynoldsburg, OH 614-328-8768 - Broadway Kennels- 35 mins away in Pataskala, OH 740-964-0050 or [email protected] - Bark Ave. Boarding Kennel- 40 mins away in Zanesville, OH 740-459-7352

What kind of handicap facilities will you be providing?

There will be a designated ADA parking/camping area for people with special accessibility needs near the medical tent. Anyone with a state-issued vehicle endorsement (license plate, placard or decal) is welcome to camp in the ADA Camping area with their car. We also honor any visible disability such as a broken leg or a wheelchair. There will be accessible restroom facilities and a wheelchair accessible space inside the concert area. Please Register for ADA Camping here…must purchase ticket prior to registering. Register Here

Can I bring my RV?

Yes. There is a designated RV area just outside the concert venue though it does not have hookups. You must purchase a $50 RV Pass in advance to bring your RV on site. RV Passes will be available at the gate for $75. Tents and cars are not allowed in the RV area.

What's the deal with the VIP option?

VIP includes camping with your car or RV, a private area in the middle of the concert venue, easy walking access into the concert area, expanded facilities, a VIP separate entrance, private bathrooms and showers. VIP's with cars must keep cars in VIP Camping for the duration of the event. VIP Day Parking will be available in the backstage area. Everyone camping in or visiting the VIP area will need a VIP ticket.

What will we be allowed to bring into the campgrounds?

You can bring your own food, beverages (but NO glass), and gear into the campground areas. Acoustic music is welcome. Campfires are fine as long as they are knee-high (no larger) and a safe distance from your tents. Don't bring your own firewood….due to local embers law.

Will bands be allowed to play in the camping area if not affiliated with the festival?

Acoustic music is great but no amplifiers are allowed. Please be respectful of your neighbors.

Will there be any electricity in the camping area?

No. Is there cell phone service available at Dark Star Jubilee? There are numerous cell phone towers in the area so service should be consistent. Walkie-talkies work well for finding friends too.

What can I bring into the stage area? What can't I bring?

You can bring everything that's allowed in the campgrounds into the stage area, except your tent. We suggest bringing water and something to sit on. Backpacks, lawn chairs, blankets, drinks are all OK. No glass bottles will be allowed in the stage area or campgrounds.

What is the taping policy going to be?

Dark Star Jubilee Festival allows audio recording of the event. A Tapers section will be provided with limited area, first come, until full basis. Soundboard patches are NOT PERMITTED. Please be self-sufficient (bring your own batteries & power) and be respectful of patrons and sound crew. At any time, Dark Star Jubilee Festival may change, modify or close the taper section without warning if problems arise. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Will cameras be allowed in the concert (venue) area?

Generally yes. Avoid using your flash - most bands find it distracting and the flash won't help you in concert photography conditions anyway.

What types of vendors will be there?

The Dark Star Jubilee Festival Vendor Villages will showcase clothiers, jewelers, painters, potters, special imports, retailers and more. There will also be concessions of beverages, beers, and good eats ranging from well-prepared vegetarian to options for the carnivorous connoisseur. We hope you will enjoy them as much as we did selecting them.

General Rules:
*Come with Ticket or Money for Festival Pass:
Do not arrive empty handed.
* Respect your neighbor. We think kindness is contagious.
* NO Violence/or Weapons: Aggressive conduct towards festival patrons or staff will result in immediate ejection from event.
* NO Glass bottles: Extreme danger w/ broken glass. Do not bring glass bottles as they are subject to confiscation. Plastic containers and cans for personal consumptions only.
* NO Under Age Drinking
*** NO illegal substances
* NO Dogs:
No exceptions. Leave your pets at home. Abandoning your pet or tree-tying is unacceptable! .
* NO Fireworks: You don't want to hurt yourself or be responsible for a forest fire.
* Keep the Scene Clean: Please clean up your area during and after your stay. Recycle centers, trash containers and trash bags are readily available.
* NO Unregistered Vending: Selling of ANYTHING to anyone without prior vendor permit is prohibited.
* NO EZ-UPs or shade tents along pathways and walkways:
* Do Not Buy from unregistered vendors:
Please help us with this problem.
*** NO NITROUS - Dark Star Jubilee strictly prohibits any use of or sales of Nitrous Oxide. Nitrous and the criminal element that tends to sell Nitrous at this type of an event is a virus to our community. We ask you, the average fan, to think twice before supporting this virus that is eating away at our lovely community. The best way to chase these folks away from our scene is to cut off the demand. Please, for the sake of our festival community, DO NOT purchase or sell Nitrous Oxide.

After Dark Star Orchestra follows the summer down so many roads that all lead to the Dark Star Jubilee, our six guys and a girl will need a few weeks to patch their bones, but once summer fades into fall they'll be ready to ride, heading west for the first leg of Fall Tour 2012. After starting in Texas and taking a short swing through the southwest, DSO jets to the promised land on the coast, playing everywhere from Solano Beach to Napa, including a two-night stop at The Fillmore in San Francisco. Talk about some long, long, crazy, crazy nights! Tickets for most shows on Fall Tour 2012, as well as the Meet Me At The Jubilee Summer Tour, are available here.

After having so much fun traveling all over with their fans in the last few years (remember trips to Japan, Alaska, Amsterdam, England, Canada and just about every corner of the continental U.S.?), it's time for DSO to head to the islands for Dark Star Orchestra's Jamaican Jam In The Sand, March 1-5, 2013, at the Breezes Grand Resort & Spa in Negril, Jamaica. For one all-inclusive price you'll get three full 2-set DSO shows, plus an acoustic set and three nights of our friend, Keller Williams, plus ground transportation to and from the airport, all inclusive meals in a variety of restaurants, beverages, water sports and so much more, including a golf tournament hosted by Rob Koritz (greens fees extra). Rooms are filling up fast, so check here to make sure you claim yours while you can!

The night was a special one as Grateful Dead founding bassist Phil Lesh joined the band for the entire set performing everything from “Jack Straw” to “Feel Like A Stranger” with a highlight of the ‘musical sandwich’ of “Dark Star > Playin’ In the Band > The Stranger > Eyes of the World > Morning Dew > Playin’ Reprise.”

This was the first time Lesh joined DSO on stage, joining five other Dead alumni who’ve sat in with the band: Bob Weir, Donna Jean Godchaux, Bill Kreutzmann, Vince Welnick and Tom Constanten. Fans can download or stream the mastered show with Lesh joining DSO on bass at http://archive.org/details/DSO2012-10-13.SBD.flac.

As the pre-eminent Grateful Dead spirit band, and after 15 years together, Dark Star Orchestra will eclipse the 2200 show mark later this month; and for perspective, the Grateful Dead did 2315 shows in 30 years. Bassist Kevin Rosen is the longest running member of Dark Star Orchestra having performed over 2000 of the bands live shows since forming the group with a four-night stand at Martyrs’ in Chicago in November 1997.Citing health issues of his aging mother and a need for an extended break from touring, Rosen will perform at the band’s 2ndannual Dark Star Jubilee Festival before finishing his low end duties for DSO at the June 1 tour-ending performance at Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom in Portsmouth, NH.A variety of bassists have stepped up to fill the vital role beginning with Skip Vangelas filling in May 9 – 14. Skip played with DSO rhythm guitarist/vocalist Rob Eaton in the NJ-based Border Legion and filled in on bass for four DSO Colorado shows in the Spring of 2001. Kevin returns to the road to handle the low end from May 15 to June 1. Starting with DSO’s summer tour, bassist Jim Allard will fill in as Dark Star Orchestra bassist staring June 28 through the summer tour dates.Kevin’s note to Dark Star Orchestra fans and his band mates:Dear friends,After all my years of touring with Dark Star Orchestra, I find myself in need of an extended break from life on the road.  In addition, my mother’s declining health makes it even more important to be home at this time. For the first five shows of our May tour,  our good friend, Skip Vengelas will be filling the bass role.  I will be returning for the rest of the tour, culminating with my last performance at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom on June 1.  Please know that I am leaving with a heavy heart.I would like to thank all of the fans for your support throughout the years.   I would also like to express my gratitude to all the members of the DSO family.   Over the years,  you have become my family.  It has been one of the great pleasures of my life to be a part of DSO and I know that I am going to miss it.  I will surely miss my band mates, all of my friends in the audience and the many great people I have met along the way. Rest assured that the train will keep on rolling and the bass position will be in capable hands for years to come.May all of your days be good ones!Peace –Kevin Rosen

Fri, 10/11/2013 - 10:46 am

Following the Spring departure of longtime bassist, Kevin Rosen, the Chicago-formed Dark Star Orchestra offered temporary spots to a handful of talented performers. Today, the band announces the formal, permanent bassist role goes to Skip Vangelas who is currently on tour with the band. Vangelas previously played with Dark Star Orchestra guitarist/vocalist Rob Eaton in the band Border Legion and was briefly in DSO himself in 2001.In addition to the bassist announcement, Dark Star Orchestra this week released numerous live, soundboard recordings of the band mastered by Rob Eaton on the band’s Nugs.net / LiveDownloads.com page here. DSO is offering a streaming version of their 17-minute plus take on ‘Turn On Your Lovelight’ recorded May 26, 2013 at the 2nd Annual Dark Star Jubilee Festival that took place at Legend Valley over Memorial Day weekend. The ‘Lovelight’ recording can be found here.As the band performs their 2250th performance this weekend at a two-night stand at San Francisco’s The Fillmore, DSO’s show count lays less than 100 shows away from eclipsing the approximately 2318 shows that the original Grateful Dead did over 30 years. As Dark Star Orchestra gets ready to say hello to 2014, they would like to take a minute to thank all of their fans for a successful 2013! The band had a record year, with many highlights including the first ever Jam In The Sand in Jamaica, and the second installment of Dark Star's very own festival, the Dark Star Jubilee, both of which will take place again in 2014.2013 saw the departure of bassist Kevin Rosen and the entrance of Skip Vangelas as a full time member of the band. Skip and the rest of Dark Star Orchestra are thrilled to be back at The Paramount in Huntington, NY to ring in the New Year once again, and hope that you will join them as they get ready for a bright 2014. A limited amount of tickets remain for our two-night celebration – get yours now!As Jerry once said, "the live show is still our main thing", and Dark Star Orchestra will be out on the road in 2014 coming to a city near you!

Fri, 02/07/2014 - 10:29 am

Dark Star Orchestra and All Good Presents announce today the return of Dark Star Jubilee to Legend Valley in Thornville, OH, just 30 minutes east of Columbus, on Memorial Day Weekend May 23-25.

Hosted and curated by Dark Star Orchestra, world-renowned re-creators of the Grateful Dead live experience, this third annual Jubilee festival features these artists:

Dark Star Orchestra (3 nights)

Yonder Mountain String Band

Galactic

Keller Williams with More Than A Little

New Riders of the Purple Sage

The Wailers (performing the Bob Marley album Legend in its entirety)

Anders Osborne

The Werks

Toubab Krewe

Cornmeal

UV Hippo

Rumpke Mountain Boys

The Ragbirds

Aliver Hall

plus additional artists still to be announced

The Dark Star Jubilee features an intimate setting within hallowed and historic grounds, offering up nearly 36 hours of music, all with non-overlapping sets. The stages are set up side by side allowing fans to see and hear the entirety of each and every artist listed on the lineup without having to hike between stages or choose between bands.

Attendees can camp within the concert bowl, a few hundred feet from the stage, making the experience that much more up close and personal. The Erie Reader summed up the Jubilee experience well with this passage from its review of the 2013 event: “Along with that certain electricity in the air that comes at the front of every good, long outdoor music fest, some of the first things I encountered when arriving on the Valley's grounds last weekend were a noticeable lack of hassles, a noticeable abundance of playful little kids, and a whole lot of friendly Deadheads – all there to share in the getting-down.”

Having just welcomed a new member and celebrated their 16th anniversary, Dark Star Orchestra have an exciting year ahead of them with a return to Jamaica and the oncoming milestone of surpassing the Grateful Dead’s 2318 shows played. Ever committed, the band has been endorsed by critics, fans and even all the living members of the Grateful Dead themselves have joined and played with DSO on stage. A quote by their own soundman of three decades Dan Healy puts it clear as he once said of DSO: “I can close my eyes and go back 30 years”.

Drawing from the vast Gospel and R&B scene of Richmond, VA, Keller Williams with More Than A Little is blazing new ground in the world of funk. Keller describes the project as, “funking up some of my favorite songs mixed with some interesting, familiar covers done the ‘More Than A Little Way.’ I’m proud to say that this band brings it. It’s no typical white boy funk that one may expect from this typical white boy.”

Dark Star Jubilee tickets are available now with discounted ‘Early Bird’ tickets for a 3-day GA festival pass for $109 ($40 off gate price) and for ‘Good Lovin’ VIP’ festival admission at $225 ($65 off gate price). ‘Little Star Kids’ is a $25 ticket for pre-registered children ages 4-12, who must be accompanied by a festival ticket-holding adult. Festival attendees ages three and under are free while youth above age 13 must have a full price festival pass. Gates open at noon Friday, May 23. Celebrating their 17th year performing, Dark Star Orchestra has now played more Grateful Dead shows than the Grateful Dead themselves. Their performances have been endorsed by critics and fans, and the band has played alongside every living member of the original Grateful Dead as well as toured with their soundman of nearly three decades (“I can close my eyes and go back 30 years”).

More than three decades have passed since Los Lobos released their debut album, Just Another Band from East L.A. Since then they’ve repeatedly disproven that title—Los Lobos isn’t “just another” anything, but rather a band that has consistently evolved artistically while never losing sight of their humble roots. The band has a special place in the hearts of Deadheads nationwide as the band opened up numerous shows for the Grateful Dead in the late 1980s.

Railroad Earth has released six critically acclaimed studio albums and one hugely popular live one called, “Elko.” They’ve also amassed a huge and loyal fan base who turn up to support them in every corner of the country, taking advantage of the band’s liberal taping and photo policy.

Over a number of records and tireless touring and unforgettable performances at such festivals as Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Robert Randolph & The Family Band have won an expanding and passionate fan base.

Dark Star Jubilee Early Bird tickets are available now for the discounted rate on a 3-day GA festival pass at $119 ($50 off gate price) and for ‘Good Lovin’ VIP’ festival admission at $245 ($75 off gate price). ‘Little Star Kids’ is a $25 ticket for pre-registered children ages 4-12, who must be accompanied by a festival ticket-holding adult ($15 off gate price). Festival attendees ages three and under are free while youth above age 13 must have a full price festival pass. Gates open at noon Friday, May 22. For over 17 years and nearly 2500 shows played, Dark Star Orchestra has embodied the Grateful Dead’s live experience, keeping it alive for nearly two decades. Continuing the live concert experience has been DSO’s strong suit with members of the Grateful Dead sitting in with them including Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, Donna Jean Godchaux & others.

Steve Kimock’s ability to articulate tone, melody and emotion into music combined with technical brilliance has earned him the title “Guitar Monk” for his commitment to guitar, and his ability to make it speak with its own original voice.  Joining him are some of the most talented musicians to incorporate the Garcia and GD songbook and features keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, drummer Jay Lane, bassist Reed Mathis, and guitarist/vocalist Dan Lebowitz.

Grammy-award winner and six-time Grammy nominee, Peter Rowan is a bluegrass singer-songwriter with a career spanning over five decades. From his early years playing under the tutelage of bluegrass patriarch Bill Monroe, Peter’s stint in Old & In the Way with Jerry Garcia and his subsequent breakout as both a solo performer and bandleader, Rowan has built a devoted, international fan base through his continuous stream of original recordings, collaborative projects, and constant touring.

Among other milestones it’s crossing this week, Dark Star Orchestra is finally old enough to vote. The band enters into its 18th year of performing on 11/11/15, the anniversary of their first performance in 1997; while later this same week, the band will perform its 2500th show at the House of Blues in Boston, MA on November 18. This milestone is just one of many that Dark Star Orchestra has crossed, having already eclipsed the actual number of performances the Grateful Dead shared in their 30-year career.

The numerical milestones aside, the band today announces noteworthy plans for its New Year’s Eve at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia with a duo of nights December 30 & 31. In the spirit of Bill Graham’s classic NYE celebrations, DSO has joined forces with the legendary West Coast festival design team at Peak Experience Productions. The key to the celebration is participation in DSO’s theme of “Let It Shine!”. The band wants to know what you are grateful for and what you want to shine some love and light on in 2016. There are creative plans to include each fans’ thoughts and wishes as part of the New Year’s show. Various engaging activities including a costume contest, all while presenting a multi-media journey featuring cirque performers, audience participation and a musical exploration for all who are present. More details are at http://bit.ly/DSONYE2015. Tickets for both nights at the Electric Factory are available at http://bit.ly/DSO_Philly.

Soon after 2016 rings in with a four night, Cosmic New Year celebration run, Dark Star Orchestra returns to Jamaica for their fourth incursion of the Jam in the Sand Festival. Less than twenty rooms remain at press time for the event happening January 19 – 23, 2016 at the Jewel Paradise Cover in Runaway Bay, Jamaica. DSO performs four full nights, two sets per night and they’re joined by Steve Kimock’s Tribute to Jerry Garcia and Peter Rowan’s Bluegrass Band. Details on remaining available packages for the all-inclusive event can be found at www.DSOJamInTheSand.com. A video showing footage from this year’s Jam in the Sand Festival can be viewed below.

Continuing the Grateful Dead concert experience in its 20th year, Dark Star Orchestra today announces special plans for The 40th Anniversary Shows as a celebration of the Dead’s infamous May 1977 tour.

Through this upcoming May Tour, DSO is recreating five historic show setlists from the Grateful Dead’s 1977 Spring tour on the exact 40th anniversary of the respective shows’ dates. Unlike last week in New Orleans, where the band announced they’d recreate the GD’s 4/27/77 show on its four-decade-to-the-day anniversary, this May, DSO is not divulging which exact dates those shows will fall. Rather, the band is letting the fan base guess the dates as the tour progresses.

With the Grateful Dead’s official release this week of the famed 5/8/77 Barton Hall show and the band’s May 1977 box set, DSO is excited to bring these classic Grateful Dead setlists to life on the 40th Anniversary this month.

DSO rhythm guitarist/vocalist Rob Eaton offers “The Spring 1977 GD is special because it's when I truly ‘got it.’ Not that I wasn't a Deadhead already, but what I witnessed in May of ‘77 changed my life forever.”

“For the first time in DSO's history the dates and times have collided and it's given us an opportunity to honor the great GD Spring 77' tour. We plan on playing five of the Dead's set lists on the exact dates 40 years to the day and quite frankly to the hour. Ten days on our spring tour fall on dates The Dead played in May, of those ten we chose five dates where we will honor those sets. We are calling them The 40th Anniversary Shows. We aren't announcing which dates those will be just that we will be doing some. I’m really looking forward to this special tour!”

DSO’s keyboardist Rob Barraco also attended more than a handful of these dates in May 1977 including the 5/8/77 Barton Hall performance. “Spring ‘77 is considered by many the highwater mark for the Grateful Dead. Having attended a huge portion of these shows, I concur! We are pleased to play these shows on their 40th anniversary,” said Barraco.

August 1, 1973. Jerry Garcia’s 31st birthday. That was the last show that his Fender Stratocaster guitar – nicknamed ‘Alligator’ - was used in a concert performance.

Thanks to the generosity of the guitar's new owner Andy Logan, Dark Star Orchestra guitarist Jeff Mattson will be the first to perform with the instrument since Garcia set it down following that summer evening's show. Alligator returns to the stage Saturday, February 15 when Dark Star Orchestra performs at The Warfield in San Francisco.

On Friday, February 14, Jerry Garcia's Martin D28 acoustic guitar (also made possible by the generosity of Andy Logan) will join DSO for another highly notable stage addition when they perform the acoustic portion of the recreation of the original Grateful Dead 2/14/70 show that the band is performing on the show's 50th anniversary. Additionally, this is the acoustic guitar that filled train cars with its vast tones alongside Janis Joplin, The Band and more on the infamous Festival Express tour in 1970.

These opportunities are made possible by the work of these guitars’ owner and benefactor Andy Logan, who notes “I was three years old when Alligator was last on stage, and drooled over Europe ‘72 bootlegs and videos never dreaming I would get to see Alligator played live. Thanks to Rick Turner and Dark Star Orchestra, we fans will all get to hear Alligator’s return to the stage with its unique tone cutting through the room. Other than the Grateful Dead, there’s no band that has put in more time studying and playing this material, than Dark Star Orchestra, so I am thrilled they will have the honor to kick off the next chapter for this time-tested instrument that is dripping with Grateful Dead history.”

Tickets for the two night run at The Warfield in San Francisco are available at https://www.axs.com/series/10024/dark-star-orchestra-two-nights-tickets?skin=goldenvoice&aff=ebprom

The story behind one of the most technically decorated and carefully crafted bass instruments in music history is one of true Grateful Dead lore. As one of Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh’s most iconic instruments, ‘Mission Control’ was built at Alembic by luthier Rick Turner in 1973 not just for, but as part of, The Wall of Sound.  Featured in The Grateful Dead Movie, this instrument was on stage with the Grateful Dead from 1974 until 1979.  Shortly after Phil stopped playing her in 1980, she was gutted of her pickups and lost for 40 years, she has been found and restored and is ready to be heard again.

After being out of public view for nearly four decades, the bass landed in the hands of Jason Scheuner, Deadhead and Artist Liason for Telefunken. “We are thrilled to be the new custodian of the most significant bass guitar in Rock n Roll History!  The Rick Turner/Alembic/Phil Lesh “Mission Control” bass, aka “Osage Orange”, aka “The Omega”. It was important to us that it go to a Deadhead, it has and now can be shared with the world. Dark Star Orchestra was the obvious choice to debut the stage return of this historic instrument, and will be played by DSO bassist Skip Vangelas.” To complete the final steps of the restoration to get the instrument back to create its quality, stage-ready sound, Scheuner continues, “Rick Turner will be flying down to San Diego to complete the final step of the restoration before the first show.  The neck and bridge pickups removed some 40 years ago have now been found and recovered (from Fred Hammon of Dark Star Pickups) and will be installed to complete the restoration of this historic instrument.”

The instrument’s creator Rick Turner states "Ahhh, the return of the prodigal bass!  ‘Mission Control’ is likely the ultimate four string electric bass as a combination of lutherie and electronics.  She disappeared decades ago having been frightfully abused, but she lives again!  I'm so happy to have been the luthier who built her and to be participating in the restoration to stage ready.  I can’t wait to hear her in her full glory with Dark Star Orchestra in San Diego & Los Angeles next week!”

‘Mission Control’ will appear at Dark Star Orchestra shows at Friday, February 21 at the House of Blues in San Diego, CA and Saturday, February 22 at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, CA. DSO is in the midst of the Winter Tour winding down the Pacific Coast with a two-night stand at The Warfield in San Francisco coming up this weekend; where notably, two of Jerry Garcia’s early 70s instruments will join Dark Star Orchestra on stage for their first appearance on the stage since 1973. Complete information and tickets for all shows are available at https://www.darkstarorchestra.net/tour-dates/.  More information on Rick Turner is available at www.rickturnerguitars.com and Alembic at www.alembic.com.

Today, music fans can tune in for the first time to The Music Plays the Band podcast from Dark Star Orchestra Drummer Rob Koritz. Highlighting and focusing on the influence of the Grateful Dead on the life and career of professional musicians within the jamband world and beyond, the podcast is available now on all streaming platforms including Apple Music, Spotify, iTunes and more via the landing page https://themusicplays.buzzsprout.com

Given that musicians who like the Grateful Dead really love talking about the Grateful Dead, Rob goes deep and delves into long form conversations with some of the scene’s most respected musicians detailing how they got turned on to the band and the impact it had on their life, music and careers. Koritz notes "I get to talk with some of my favorite musicians, getting to connect on why and how the Grateful Dead influences their music, their work ethic and other insights you’ll want to tune in to hear!"

Featured special guests in the first batch of episodes include Keller Williams, Rob Barraco (Dark Star Orchestra, Phil & Friends, The Dead), Kenny Withrow (New Bohemians), Vinny Amico (moe.), and Ben Kaufman (Yonder Mountain String Band). In addition to the featured artist interviews, each episode will have three mini-segments:

The Black Music Moment highlighting the monumental influence of Black Music on the sound of the Grateful Dead. Rob states “I'm very excited to be able to delve deeper into the musicians, the music and the stories of those black artists who had immense inspiration on the Dead’s music.”

The Sarno Music Solutions Breakdown with audio guru Brad Sarno about ideas and techniques that shed light on the sonic secrets from the Grateful Dead audio world.  Known for his Sarno Music Solutions and Blue Jade Audio Mastering, Sarno is an authority on the equipment and audio world of the Grateful Dead, as he was behind the crafting of the unique guitar rig used by Trey Anastasio for the ‘GD 50’ celebration in Chicago in 2015.

There's a Grateful Dead Cover Band in Every Town featuring conversations with local Grateful Dead bands from around the country, discussing different approaches to covering the music and the communities that have developed around these scenes.  Koritz notes, "we all know the cover band in our area, I am happy to shed a little light on these hard-working artists in communities all over the country."

In addition to the streaming sounds of the podcast, The Music Plays the Band today launches its Patreon site offering a wide variety of limited-edition, fan exclusives ranging from outtakes to monthly one on one video conversations with Rob Koritz. Complete details and experience levels are available at https://www.patreon.com/TheMusicPlays.

The genesis of ‘The Music Plays the Band’ podcast begins with Rob, finding himself in the unusual place of having lots of time at home, with Dark Star Orchestra unable to tour due to the global pandemic. Not being able to bring the music to the people, Rob began engaging with fans on social media, offering question and answer sessions, as well as some live interviews, which inspired the evolution of taking things further.

As is the norm when dealing in all things Grateful Dead, events started taking on a life of their own, as Rob was approached by old friends and St. Louis songwriting/production team, Brothers Lazaroff, about supporting him in elevating his offering further to create a formal podcast available to a wider audience.

Pulling from his lifetime as a professional touring musician specializing in the music of the Grateful Dead, Rob is excited to bring conversations he feels are largely missing from the cannon of Grateful Dead inspired content.

“I hope you’ll take a listen to our initial episodes! We have great conversations with tremendous musicians, plus we have some really great bonus content and opportunities to get to know me a little better."

Greetings fellow Deadheads, family, friends and all ~

A recent injury left Dark Star Orchestra musician Rob Eaton with a fractured ulna and radius in his left wrist. He currently is keeping these bones all together with pins, screws and a plate.

With guitar playing still on the horizon, Rob is expected to make a full recovery and return to the stage with DSO in the near future.

However, the healthcare system in our country & insurance providers have neglected this human repair and Rob is currently looking to the support of the community to help chip away at the over $75,000 medical bill for his mending.

All GoFundMe donations raised from this fundraiser will go directly to offset this exorbitant expense.

Rob is expected to make a full recovery and continue to perform in the future, but significant healing is needed in the meantime.

Any donation is greatly appreciated, no matter the size.

For fans who choose to add camping to their online ‘pod ticketing’ order, the two night camping fee is a total of $150 per campsite (to host your pod crew of two to five patrons only).

The socially-distanced evenings modify the Jubilee to Jubilation as current times and live events have transformed and reshaped according to public health policies with safety for the fans, artists and staff as the primary focus. Tickets for the Dark Star Jubilation range from $40 to $85 per person, per night and go on sale Fri. February 19 at 10am ET at http://tkpro.ticketspice.com/darkstarjubilation

The Grateful Dead tribute act Dark Star Orchestra formed in Chicago, Illinois and offered its first public show on November 11, 1997, has performed 2997 shows since that time. The band today announces the return to its Windy City birthplace roots by hosting a pair of shows in downtown Chicago at Soldier Field.

While the Chicago performance may fill the souls of fans within the Midwest, things get really interesting as the band heads to the West Coast for a trio of shows in Felton, CA at Roaring Camp May 7 - 9. The first night of these sold out performances will mark the band’s 3000th live performance together and some very special, inanimate guests join the celebration.

Thanks to the generosity of the instruments’ owners, both Jerry Garcia’s ‘Alligator’ guitar as well as Phil Lesh’s massive ‘Mission Control’ bass will channel The Music once again via the hands of DSO’s guitarist Jeff Mattson and bassist Skip Vangelas respectively. Both instruments return to the stage with Dark Star Orchestra following their use on a handful of California shows on the band’s last tour before the COVID-19 crisis hit and forced touring to cease.

The live experience is ultimate in the world of The Grateful Dead which lead the band to recording its shows from its legendary 1972 European tour. It was unknown at the time that the album would go on to become the band’s landmark live statement, a 3 LP live album, known worldwide as Europe ‘72.

The latest statement comes from Dark Star Orchestra, announcing its celebration of 50 years since that game-changing 1972 tour of Europe, with a tour of its own. Uniting a global fanbase of Grateful Dead fans, the hallowed music will once again ring in the halls and theaters across the continent September 13 - 25, 2022, as every show will be a recreation of a historic Europe ‘72 tour performance. DSO’s European itinerary weaves from London to Paris, Germany to Italy, each night exposing the band’s crafting of hyper-accurate live Grateful Dead music to an entirely new audience. The European tour’s itinerary has DSO performing in four of the exact cities from Europe ‘72; notably in Paris, France, the band is performing at The Olympia - the very same venue the Grateful Dead performed on May 3, 1972.

Before heading to Europe, Dark Star Orchestra’s Europe ‘72 recreations come to life in the States - 50 years to the day - as the Dead’s 4/8/72 show from Wembley Empire Pool London, England will be performed at the Skull & Roses Festival on April 8 in Ventura, CA. Additionally, the band will take the Europe ‘50 Years Later’ recreation to The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY on May 13, offering the Dead’s performance from Lille, France from 5/13/72.

Adding to the band’s authentic sound at these two stateside performances is the presence and participation of Jerry Garcia’s ‘Alligator’ guitar; a 1955 Fender Stratocaster originally used by Jerry on the Europe 1972 tour, shared with DSO’s lead guitarist Jeff Mattson to handle and elevate the specific tones from this legendary instrument.

This historic Jerry Garcia instrument is provided for use with a special thanks to Grateful Guitars Foundation’s Andy Logan. Logan states "Grateful Guitars is thrilled that Dark Star Orchestra is celebrating the Grateful Dead’s legendary Europe ’72 tour’s 50th anniversary. We’re excited to celebrate some specific show anniversaries this year in the United States and especially to ‘take that ride again’ and tour Europe with the band and our loving tribe. We know this will enliven Deadheads around the world and will help ensure this music thrives for generations.”

Dark Star Orchestra keyboardist / vocalist Rob Barraco summarizes the magnitude of experience stating, “It is an honor of my lifetime to pay tribute to such a transformative event that we all have come to know as Europe ‘72.”

Tickets for all European shows go on sale Friday, March 25 at 6 AM ET are available via DarkStarOrchestra.net.

While the 25th year of live DSO shows notches a huge milestone for the band, also happening this week is the kick off of the band’s Europe ‘72 50th Anniversary Tour as they headline a nine-show run across the continent in honor of the Dead’s legendary romp across the pond. Shows in England, France, Germany and Italy will broaden the global Deadhead experience, some for the first time ever.

Foreign lands are familiar to the group as the 10th DSO’s Jamaican Jam in the Sand event happens January 10 to 13, 2023 in Runaway Bay, Jamaica. Returning to the Jewel Paradise Cove’s familiar beaches, hundreds of fans gather oceanside for four nights of music and celebration under the stars and palm trees, an easy going venue for the dead of winter.
