After the sun set on the Tedeschi Trucks Band's inaugural Sunshine Blues Festival, which featured performances by Dr. John and the Wood Brothers, Atlanta's rootsy rhythm & blues quartet Flannel Church hosted the fest's official after party just down the road at the Funky Biscuit. Drummer Duane Trucks and bassist Kevin Scott settled into a hard-hitting groove early, putting new frontman Marshall Ruffin's vocals on display in songs like "Tailor" and "Make It Rain", before surprise guest Susan Tedeschi joined in on a daunting cover of the Bill Withers classic, "Grandma's Hands" and the old gospel tune, "Wade in the Water." Flannel Church will return to Florida April 18-20 for an encore performance at the Wanee Music Festival hosted by the Spirit of Suwanee Music Park in Live Oak, FL.

For Flannel Church tour date information and studio recordings, visit www.flannelchurch.com.

About Flannel Church: Born from an infectious groove drummer Duane Trucks and bassist Kevin Scott discovered at an impromptu jam session in Atlanta's historic Little Five Points district, Flannel Church's lineup initially came together under the watchful eye of rock legend Col. Bruce Hampton. Fronted by vocalists Marshall Ruffin and Lawson Feltman on lead guitars, Flannel Church brings a hard-hitting gospel stomp to their soulful American blues. From swampy late nights on Frenchmen Street to blazing hot shuffles on the Carolina coast, the group leaves an indelible mark on listeners, ushering in a new generation of Southern roots music.

Something about San Francisco feels like a home-away-from-home for the Brooklyn-based Pimps of Joytime, whose infectious, funk-ridden grooves celebrate the simple joy of an all out dance party. The genre-bending ensemble was all smiles when asked about their upcoming back-to-back shows March 22 and 23 at the Independent. "There's something so liberating about the music culture there -- from the jump people are ready to get down," said Pimps of Joytime bandleader Brian J. "The Bay area has been a big supporter of what we do since almost the beginning. It was the initial buzz from our first shows at the Boom Boom Rooms that started us as a national touring act so, thanks San Francisco!"Fans can expect a few new tunes from the band's forthcoming studio album, in addition to classic jams from the PJT archives. With new drummer John Staten behind the kit and a fresh kick in their step, Brian J says their upcoming double-header at the Independent won't leave any note unturned. "We felt that from their extensive touring schedule to far-reaching press in publications like Rolling Stone and charity concert supporting Superstorm Sandy relief efforts, Dumpstaphunk really brought New Orleans to new heights. They had a knockout year and represented our city in such a positive way to a new spectrum of audiences nationwide, that we're eager to recognize their success at this years awards."

"It's probably the most soulful place in the world, New Orleans" said Dumpstaphunk keyboardist Ivan Neville. "The people that live here and the culture our community creates is something that everyone should experience in their life. We are proud to call New Orleans home and share its positivity through our music every day."

Bridging the gap between festivities during New Orleans' Jazz & Heritage Festival, Dumpstaphunk will host a Dirty Word preview party Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at the Louisiana Music Factory. Starting at 6pm, the heavyweight funk collective -- featuring Ivan Neville, Nick Daniels, Tony Hall, Ian Neville and Nikki Glaspie -- will treat fans to an intimate live performance, with the first copies of Dirty Word available for purchase in-store before the album drops worldwide later this summer. The poignant celebration falls on the week of Dumpstaphunk's 10th anniversary since they first stepped onto the Gentilly Stage as a group in 2003. The quintet has since evolved from simply a Jazz Fest side project into what Rolling Stone now calls "one of music's most prestigious modern funk ensembles."Dumpstaphunk's third studio release since they became a full-time project in 2006, Dirty Word offers new forays into blues, gospel, second-line, R&B and straight up rock and roll, with guest appearances by Trombone Shorty, Rebirth Brass Band, Skerik, the Groovline Horns, Art Neville, Ani DiFranco and Flea of the Red Hot Chili PeppersDirty Word also marks the studio debut of new drummer Nikki Glaspie, a staple presence at Dumpstaphunk’s live show since she joined the ensemble in 2011.Prior to Jazz Fest, Dumpstaphunk will also be honored at the 2013 Big Easy Awards with the special recognition honor of "Ambassador of Entertainment" for championing New Orleans music, culture and charity to new audiences nationwide.Dumpstaphunk Performances During Jazz Fest

  • Friday, April 26: Howlin’ Wolf (Parliament Funkadelic cover set), 11:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, April 27: Jazz & Heritage Festival (Gentilly Stage), 3:35 - 4:40 p.m.

  • Sunday, May 5: Tipitina’s Uptown (10th anniversary w/guest horns Skerik, Natalie Cressman and Jennifer Hartswick), 11 p.m.

About DumpstaphunkA decade evolved from their debut at 2003's New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Dumpstaphunk offers fans an unforgettable live experience steeped in the Big Easy tradition of a good time. The quintet features Ivan Neville on vocals, B3 and Clav, the double bass attack and soulful voices of Tony Hall and Nick Daniels III, Ian Neville on guitar, and the monster addition of Nikki Glaspie on drums and vocals. From annual performances at New Orleans' Jazz Fest -- "The colossal low end and filthy grooves they threw down from the Gentilly Stage must have set a Jazz Fest record for baddest bass jams ever." (Bass Player Magazine, 2012) -- to music rooms and festivals across the nation (Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, All Good, High Sierra, Hangout, Jam Cruise and Outside Lands to name a few), Dumpstaphunk continues to spread an unmistakably New Orleans groove with hard-hitting performances that dare listeners not to move.
“We always keep the spontaneity going, that’s something I love about this band," says Ivan. “We can funk it out with the best of them, but we also like to showcase how all sorts of music can come together and push the boundaries of what funk music is."Dumpstaphunk's summer 2013 release, Dirty Word, re-imagines their genre, holding true to the opinionated, vintage funk of Sly & the Family Stone and Parliament Funkadelic, but with a modern edge that forays into gospel, blues, second-line, R&B and straight-up rock n’ roll. True to New Orleans tradition, Dumpsta’s friends and family Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, Rebirth Brass Band, Skerik, the Grooveline Horns, Art Neville, Ani DiFranco and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers kick the Dirty Word sessions up a notch.Ivan continues, "The whole record speaks to the righteousness of music. We’re not necessarily telling a specific story, but expressing how music makes things right for everyone in their own way. Our fans can feel that vibe and let it take them wherever they need to.”“We just hope to spread the good word through funk," adds Glaspie. "If we can create an escape, give people a reason to get down and forget their problems, then we're doing what we set out to do."For tour dates and to download two free songs from Dirty Word, visit www.dumpstaphunk.com

Announced today, West Asheville will bring together four of music's most creative and talented minds Thursday, July 18 when the Grey Eagle hosts a spontaneous super-jam featuring bassist Oteil Burbridge (Allman Brothers), his brother and keyboardist Kofi Burbridge (Tedeschi Trucks Band), pedal steel phenom Roosevelt Collier (Lee Boys) and local legend, drummer Jeff Sipe (Aquarium Rescue Unit).

Friends for years both on and off the stage, the veteran players are arguably some of each others' biggest fans. "The way that Oteil approaches the bass is so soulful -- he has a spirit to how he plays," Collier explained. "Oteil is on another level."

Whether touring together, or sitting in as a special guest when their paths cross on the road, individually the four have collaborated with each other countless times on numerous projects over the years. But on July 18, Asheville will be the first to experience this explosive quartet performing as a single, collective unit.

"Talk about a lineup," Oteil Burbridge said eagerly. "It doesn't get much better than that."

When asked what fans can expect from the July 18 super-jam at the Grey Eagle, Collier responded with a definitive, "I honestly don't know, and that's the whole point. Anything is bound to happen. A lot of amazing things can come out of a jam like this, and that's what people live for."

Boasting the kind of ferocious funk collaborations you’d expect to find in New Orleans during Jazzfest, as opposed to the remote Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, Equifunk sets itself apart this summer -- an unsuspecting gem among 2013 festivals.

For the past 5 years, Equifunk pioneered an all-inclusive two-day tradition at Camp Equinunk in the hills of Northeast Pennsylvania. Essentially a summer camp getaway for adults, that combines the cost of lodging, meals, beverages and unlimited beer into one convenient and affordable ticket ($350 cabins, $225 VIP camping or $185 regular camping for the all-inclusive amenities).

"Each year our attendance has doubled, but it still keeps the intimate vibe we set out for," explained festival creator Eric Kamen. "We may look like a simple festival at first glance, but the joy Equifunk brings to that valley is so much more dynamic. The all-inclusive set up feels like you're are at someone's personal party -- to not have to carry your money around to get a drink or a bite to eat is an invaluable feeling. The pool scene in the afternoons is unreal, and at night the main stage exudes energy of club show within the ease of an outdoor environment." Kamen added, "We take pride in our lineup and really listen to our fans so each year they get the best possible experience."

2012 Equifunk Video Short

2013 Equifunkers will groove to performances by Soulive (featuring the Shady Horns and legendary sax man Maceo Parker), the New Mastersounds w/Artist at Large, saxophonist James Casey (Lettuce, Trey Anastasio Band), Anders Osborne featuring John Medeski, JJ Grey & Mofro, Keller Williams with More Than a Little (his new funk band) and many more -- all while enjoying the perks of a poolside hang, outdoor sports activities and sharing good vibes among friends.

As a special treat to fans in its 6th year, Equifunk will offer its first-ever Sunday Series -- a full day of live music featuring Phish drummer Jon Fishman’s band Pork Tornado, never-before-seen supergroup the M&Ms (Stanton Moore, Maceo Parker, John Medeski, Papa Mali, Robert Mercurio & Marco Benevento), a superjam by the “Equifunk Allstars,” and sets from the Revivalists, the London Souls, the Heavy Pets, Mike Dillon Band and Main Squeeze.

Landmark Sunday Series

By popular request, 2013 will be the first year Equifunk presents live music on Sunday.

"Those two days flew by so fast, people didn't want to leave by Sunday," Kamen recalls. "Our attendees are so loyal, we were eager to evolve with them and make Equifunk better each year as it grows."

Starting early afternoon, the day's lineup boasts some of the weekend's most recognizable upcoming names in rock and jam, such as The Revivalists, The London Souls and The Heavy Pets. Sunday's talent also includes a special Equifunk All Stars super jam featuring Eddie Roberts & Pete Shand (the New Mastersounds) with Stanton Moore (Galactic), Nigel Hall (Lettuce, Warren Haynes Band) and James Casey (Lettuce, Trey Anastasio Band), before an anticipated set from the M&Ms and Phish drummer Jon Fishman's side-project, Pork Tornado.

"I always wanted to book Pork Tornado at Equifunk," Kamen beamed. "I'm a big fan and thought their country-funk style was a perfect fit for what this festival was built on. When I heard they were available, I jumped on it immediately -- that's the kind of bill Sundays were meant for."

Equifunk’s new Sunday lineup comes as free gift to festival-goers in addition to their two-day all-inclusive pass. While meals and drinks are no longer complementary amenities on Sunday, a variety of craft beer, liquor and food offerings will be available for purchase all day as fans enjoy the final sets of the weekend and through gate close Monday.

More Than Just The Music

The grounds of Camp Equifunk enhance the intimate, funk-filled atmosphere presented on stage. Guests can hit up poolside parties with a waterslide, outdoor activities from tennis and softball to 3-on-3 basketball tournaments and yoga, and even more interactive events, including a fan vs. artist tennis match with drummer Simon Allen of the New Mastersounds, and a late-night campfire set with Marco Benevento.

The weekend's lodging accommodations are split between the Equinunk cabins located on the main campground and the Blue Ridge cabins located just a short walk away, with outdoor camping available at each.

Getting to the Funk

Equifunk offers a bus pass from New York City, where fans carpool to the festival grounds leaving Friday and returning Sunday or Monday for Manhattan. The shuttles run in either morning or evening shifts for $70 round trip or $35 one-way.

The entire weekend lineup boasts the kind of ferocious funk collaborations you’d expect to find in New Orleans during Jazzfest. New York’s premiere funk-jazz organ trio Soulive will be joined by the legendary Maceo Parker, former saxophonist with James Brown, and the charismatic horn trio, the Shady Horns. The New Mastersounds will perform with special guest saxophonist James Casey (Lettuce, Trey Anastasio Band), who will also join Sunday's superjam with the Equifunk Allstars -- featuring Eddie Roberts and Pete Shand (New Mastersounds), Stanton Moore (Galactic), Nigel Hall (Lettuce, Warren Haynes Band) and Mike Dillon. And fellow "Artist at Large" Arleigh Kincheloe of Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds will lend her slinky but powerful vocals to several stages throughout the weekend.

"We take pride in our lineup and really listen to our fans so each year they get the best possible experience," said festival creator, and former Equinunk summer camper, Eric Kamen. "Our fans are so loyal to the experience, we’re eager to evolve with them and make Equifunk better each year."

Equifunk’s lakeside campgrounds and on-site facilities ever-enhance the atmosphere presented on stage. Guests can hit up poolside parties with a water slide, outdoor activities from tennis and softball to 3-on-3 basketball tournaments and yoga, and even more interactive events, including a fan vs. artist tennis match with drummer Simon Allen of the New Mastersounds.

Bus passes are also available to shuttle guests to the campgrounds from New York City. The shuttles offer morning and evening departure times leaving Friday from Manhattan and returning either Sunday or Monday from the campgrounds.

In honor of National Recovery Month, thousands of recovering addicts will gather at the Roger Williams National Memorial next Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013 in downtown Providence at Rhode Island's annual Rally 4 Recovery -- a statewide street festival that creates a community of support for people in or seeking recovery from substance abuse. The outdoor event offers an afternoon of live music, food, inspirational speakers and outdoor activities for families, friends and fellow addicts to enjoy together in sobriety, as well as a wealth of access to resources and recovery programs throughout the state.

Last year more than 6,000 gathered at the free, all-ages event, and the 2013 Rally 4 Recovery will be web-streamed live, linking it to other rallies nationwide.

Celebrity guest speaker and performer Ivan Neville will share his experiences as one of the event's keynote speakers that afternoon, alongside David Mineta, the White House's Deputy Director of Demand Reduction for the Office of National Drug Control Policy, and former Rhode Island Congressman Patrick Kennedy, Rally 4 Recovery's official Grand Marshal of ceremonies.

Neville has been open with fans and the press about his long-term recovery from addiction, speaking candidly with Rolling Stone about how alcoholism led him to miss a performance with the Rolling Stones early in his career [2012 Rolling Stone interview]. On August 15, 2013 he humbly celebrated 15 years sober, saying to fans in a Twitter post that day, "A miracle is when something impossible happens anyway .... That is me ... Blessed!!!"

Following the motivational panel, Neville's band Dumpstaphunk -- New Orleans' reigning ringleaders of funk -- will "Raise the House" with their heavy-hitting danceable grooves, performing new music from their New York Times-acclaimed release, Dirty Word ("I don't expect to hear anything funkier this year," Jon Pareles).

Rally 4 Recovery will also boast free eats and family-friendly activities throughout the afternoon, including bouncy houses, face painting, rides, crafts, a reptile show, rock wall and more. Shortly after Dumpstaphunk's live performance, the evening comes to a close with a candle-lit procession to WaterFire along the Providence River at dusk.

“We invite people in recovery, our families and friends from throughout the region to join us in Providence,” said Jim Gillen, Co-Chair of the Rhode Island Rally 4 Recovery committee. “There are over 23 million Americans in recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs. October 1st, millions of people with addiction and mental illness will be eligible for health insurance coverage. We will be celebrating this important victory by getting ready to enroll,” he continued.

“We thank everyone who’s standing up for recovery, offering hope and opportunity for people who still need help to recover,” said Dona Dmitrovic, chair of Faces & Voices of Recovery’s board of directors. “When we recover, we benefit ourselves, our communities and the nation.”

Faces & Voices is the national organization coordinating Rally 4 Recovery events during September, National Recovery Month, and more than 100,000 people are expected to participate in recovery events throughout the state.

EVENT SCHEDULE

  • 2:00 pm: Street festival and celebrations begin
  • 3:00 pm: Rally at the Main Stage
  • 4:00 pm: Ivan Neville speaks about his experiences in recovery
  • 5:30-6:30 pm: Dumpstaphunk performs on the Main Stage

Coupling studio releases Outta Here (2002), Rage! (2008) and Fly (2012) with electrocuting live performances across the nation and overseas, there's no denying that Lettuce is one of the tightest groove juggernauts on the scene today. "We play music that reflects our way of life,” says bassist Erick “Jesus” Coomes, who is joined by fellow Royal Family ragers: guitarist Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff, keyboardist Neal Evans, vocalist Nigel Hall, drummer Adam Deitch and the Shady Horns featuring Ryan Zoidis on alto sax, Eric Bloom on trumpet and James Casey on tenor sax. Starting tonight in Brooklyn, NY, Dumpstaphunk will join legendary soul singer Lionel Richie for several dates on his "All Hits All Night Long" 2013 fall tour, pairing the Grammy-winner's classic pop songs with the dirtiest funk New Orleans has to offer.

Dumpstaphunk will perform new music from their July 2013 release Dirty Word, supporting Richie coast to coast at concerts in Brooklyn, NY (Barclay's Center), Atlanta, GA (Chastain Park Ampitheater), Houston, TX (Woodlands Pavilion), San Jose, CA (HP Pavillion) and Hollywood, CA (Hollywood Bowl).

A decade evolved from their debut at 2003's New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the heavy-hitting ensemble features Ivan Neville, Ian Neville, Tony Hall, Nick Daniels III and Nikki Glaspie. With two bass players, four-part vocal harmonies and a notorious live swagger, Dumpstaphunk will offer fans an infectious groove unseen since trailblazers like Sly & the Family Stone and Parliament Funkadelic.

Richie is not the only star supporting the modern funk movement -- folk singer Ani DiFranco and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers both appear on the band's new record, along with their New Orleans friends and family such as Trombone Shorty, Rebirth Brass Band and Art "Poppa Funk" Neville [founding member of the city's pioneering funk band, the Meters, Art is the father of Dumpstaphunk guitarist Ian Neville and uncle to keyboardist Ivan Neville, son of Neville Brothers frontman Aaron Neville].

Dirty Word has earned universal praise since its July 2013 release -- "I don't expect to hear anything funkier this year," New York Times -- while debuting at #4 on the Billboard Blues chart and currently holding down the #2 spot on the Jambands radio chart.

Dumpstaphunk plans to release their first-ever music video for Dirty Word's "Dancin' To the Truth" when they return from a string of Australian tour dates leading into their west-coast run with Richie in October.

Today, The Nth Power announces their debut national tour, hitting the road Dec. 3-14, 2013 for the first time since the underground ensemble joined forces in New Orleans less than a year ago.Finding a brief window apart from the bandmembers' various other touring projects, fans in Washington, DC; Greensboro, NC; Charleston, SC; Asheville, NC; Raleigh, NC; Atlanta, GA; Nashville, TN; St. Louis, MO; Chicago, IL; New York, NY; Portsmouth, NH and Providence, RI will get a rare first listen of what could easily be the next marquee supergroup of soul music.Few artists pack as much punch in a five-piece, all-analog ensemble as The Nth Power. The formula starts with heavy-hitting drummer Nikki Glaspie (Dumpstaphunk , Beyoncé)'s deep pocket, explosive energy and silky vocals, compounded by bassist Nate Edgar (John Brown's Body), whose quiet confidence lies in perfect contrast to the emphatic, funky low-end he creates. Next, Nigel Hall (Lettuce, Warren Haynes Band, John Scofield)'s unmistakable vocals and innate ability to preach with a keyboard hit the groove in full force. Over the top comes frontman Nick Cassarino (Jennifer Hartswick Band, Big Daddy Kane), oozing more soul in one finger than most guitarists could create in a lifetime, and with a voice that immediately wraps the room in sex appeal. West African percussionist Weedie Braimah (Toubab Krewe, Kreative Pandemonium) is the final X-factor, creating a rhythmic symphony through the djembe that ties the whole equation together with undeniable finesse.Together, The Nth Power wants to change your life through a message of musical love and understanding -- one that will inspire you to dance, groove, make love or just stand there with goose bumps. "Just know that when you hear this music, you're going to feel something -- you're going to connect with something higher than yourself," Braimah explained.December's tour follows the April 20, 2013 release of Basic Minimum Skills Test, a six-song EP the group unleashed on the streets of New Orleans during Jazzfest. There, early buzz about The Nth Power's transcendent live performances first took hold, and the band has since appeared on a handful of festival lineups, including Electric Forest and Gratitude Harvest Festival, as well as Bear Creek Music Festival this coming weekend. Currently recording at Music Shed Studios in New Orleans, The Nth Power plans to release a full-length album in 2014."The sound we create is built on a strong foundation of love," said Hall. "We're just getting started, the best is yet to come."TOUR DATES:12/03/13 - Gypsy Sally's - Washington, DC12/04/13 - The Blind Tiger - Greensboro, NC12/05/13 - Charleston Pour House - Charleston, SC12/06/13 - Asheville Music Hall - Asheville, NC12/07/13 - Pour House Music Hall - Raleigh, NC12/08/13 - The Vinyl - Atlanta, GA12/10/13 - 3rd & Lindsley - Nashville, TN12/11/13 - 2720 Cherokee Performing Arts Center - St. Louis, MO12/12/13 - Concord Music Hall - Chicago, IL (w/Lettuce)12/13/13 - Sullivan Hall - New York, NY12/14/13 - Thirsty Moose Taphouse - Portsmouth, NH12/15/13 - The Spot Underground - Providence, RI

On the eve of the 2013 Warren Haynes Christmas Jam, a handful of world-class funk, jazz and rock musicians will converge on Patton Avenue, in the heart of downtown Asheville, Thursday, Dec. 12, hosting an all-star "get down" at the Asheville Music Hall. The incredible lineup begins with pedal steel master Roosevelt Collier of the Lee Boys, who will also be an honored special guest with the Aquarium Rescue Unit and other Christmas Jam performers throughout the weekend. Collier's slide-driven sacred steel joins the quick-witted guitar licks of Eddie Roberts, British jazz-funk frontman of the New Mastersounds. Tea Leaf Green bassist Reed Mathis (who recently performed on Late Night with Conan O'Brien with Nicki Bluhm) creates the evening's deep-seeded low end, along with funk drummer John Staten of the Pimps of Joytime rounding out the infectious rhythm section. Over the top comes the feminine finesse of the Trey Anastasio Band horns -- trombonist Natalie Cressman and trumpeter Jennifer Hartswick, whose gospel-like vocals will reverberate through the walls of the Asheville Music Hall with resounding soul.Together, these six music lovers and friends will share their passion for performing with each other, and help Asheville welcome yet another weekend of unmatched live music during this year's Christmas Jam.

Dumpstaphunk has been forging a new path for funk music ever since the masters of New Orleans groove burst onto the stage at the 2003 Jazz & Heritage Festival. Today, in support of their new full-length album, Dirty Word (July 2013, Louisiana Red Hot Records), Dumpstaphunk brings their heavy-hitting party funk to life for the first time on film, announcing the music video debut of "Dancin' To The Truth."

Dancin To the Truth Music Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEWv5PElFlo&feature=youtu.be

The video features archival footage from traditional street celebrations of New Orleans, paying a nostalgic nod to the spirit and symbolism of the Crescent City, but with a modern edge delivered from the front row of a Dumpstaphunk concert.

"Every time Dumpstaphunk performs that song, we dedicate it to all the music lovers out there," keyboardist and vocalist Ivan Neville told the Wall Street Journal. "We're talking about the healing power and the righteousness of music, and where better to celebrate that spirit than in New Orleans?"

True to the track, the "Dancin' To The Truth" video couples archival footage of Mardi Gras Indians and candid images of locals dancing in the streets, with live clips from a Dumpstaphunk performance at the Howlin' Wolf during 2013's Mardi Gras celebrations. Its abstract interpretation intends to place the viewer within that experience, providing a brief translation of what it might be like to let loose with Dumpstaphunk down in New Orleans.

"The video reiterates that music is the truth. We are fortunate that there's still an audience out there that wants to hear music like this, from real musicians playing it live," Neville said. "But we also left a lot to the imagination, so that people can feel that groove and let it take them wherever they want."

Production on the "Dancin' To The Truth" video was spearheaded by Silverback and Hubtuit, with archival footage provided by local cinematographer Jay Newby (Big Chief Films). Additional footage by Jeff Pilskin (Raised Fist Propaganda) and Andrew L. Anthony (Best Coast Productions). Final edits, post production and special effects provided by Andrew L. Anthony (Best Coast Productions). Additional special effects by Motohiro Nezu.

Today, The Nth Power announces the second leg of their debut Thank You Winter Tour, illuminating audiences out West in Arizona, Colorado and Utah in late January and early February 2014, before ending on a warmer note with two performances at Best Fest in Costa Rica.Naming the tour in honor of their new single, "Thank You" (released Dec. 3, 2013) 2014's forthcoming performances will build upon a string of landmark live debuts in late 2013 -- including an acclaimed Saturday night set at Bear Creek Music Festival and December's twelve-show Eastern US debut, which garnered a highlight performance with Lettuce at Chicago's Concord Music Hall. Not yet a year old, this new passion project brings together five leading lights in the funk and soul universes to create a sound as distinctive as its message is profound.Video EPK: Welcome To The Nth PowerWith original tunes that share a global message of love and understanding, the ensemble features evangelist Nikki Glaspie (Dumpstaphunk, Beyonce) on drums, the good reverend Nigel Hall (Lettuce, Warren Haynes Band) on keys, shepherd Nate Edgar (John Brown's Body) on bass, bishop Weedie Braimah (Kreative Pandemonium, Toubab Krewe) on percussion and prophet Nick Cassarino (Jennifer Hartswick Band) on guitar. The Nth Power's three-part vocal harmonies evoke chills like a gospel choir, with uncanny instrumentation that layers flavors of world-beat, funk, gospel and jazz in the most seductive, yet ferocious manner. Together The Nth Power proves that soul music can be exponentially greater than the sum of its parts."Just know that when you hear this music, you're going to feel something -- you're going to connect with something higher than yourself," said Braimah."Our sound is built on a strong foundation of love," said Hall, who also recorded on Pretty Light's 2014 Grammy-nominated album A Color Map of the Sun. "[The Nth Power] is one of the things that I'm most proud of out of everything that I've done... We're just getting started, the best is yet to come."

Today, the Pimps of Joytime announce a string of April 2014 tour dates in honor of their new single "Booty Text" and forthcoming 2014 studio album, Jukestone Paradise.

The exotic five-piece will bring their all-analog dance tunes up the East Coast to Baltimore, MD; Washington, DC; Philadelphia, PA; Burlington, VT; Syracuse, NY; Fairfield, CT; Boston, MA and New York, NY before Midwest performances in Columbus, OH; Chicago, IL; Omaha, NE and Minneapolis, MN.

The road warriors are currently charging the West Coast leg of their winter tour, which kicked off over Valentines' weekend with two sold-out shows in San Francisco, CA at the Independent.

Before heading out west, on Jan. 28, 2014, the Pimps of Joytime proudly announced their first single in more than two years, releasing "Booty Text" as a free fan download on their website, pimpsofjoytime.com. The clever holler back anthem is available on limited-edition vinyl 45s that feature a bonus "dubby mix" of the song, for sale exclusively on tour.

The vinyl release is the band's first, a nod towards the remix culture of their native Brooklyn. "Remixes are a huge part of the club culture because they reinterpret and often times revitalize the original. A song comes alive when you’re on the floor experiencing it with your people," said lead vocalist and guitarist Brian J.

"Booty Text" was also produced by Brian J, who has produced all of the band's albums as well as Cyril Neville's last solo record and Galactic trombonist Corey Henry's forthcoming work. In the past he's recorded most of the Pimps' instrumental parts himself, including percussion. But with the addition of new drummer John Staten, Brian J dabbles with live percussion in the studio for the first time on the group's forthcoming album, Jukestone Paradise. "[Staten] brings a lot of fire into the drums, he's a huge part of this record," Brian J explained. "Percussion is really important to me, and with him I'm able to mix them loud and powerful."

Set for release in 2014, Jukestone Paradise will usher the Pimps' most focused groove to date, threading heavy delta blues riffs with intoxicating rhythms and clever songwriting throughout. It will also feature an electrifying collaboration with Alex Toth of Rubblebucket. [Note: "Booty Text" not featured on Jukestone Paradise, single only]

The Brooklyn-based Pimps of Joytime live and breathe an irresistible groove that blurs conventional genre boundaries, creating a highly engaging, funky party that you'd eagerly stumble across on the streets of New Orleans or in a New York nightclub.

Tonight in Washington, DC the soulful outfit kicks of a marathon 17-city April tour across much of the Northeast and Eastern US. At the shows, fans will experience the Pimps of Joytime's new single "Booty Text" and hear music from their forthcoming studio album, Jukestone Paradise, live in concert before anyone else.

The Pimps are known for taking risks in the studio, ever since their debut High Steppin' (2007, Wonderwheel Records) surprised critics at NPR, saying, "This is funky. It has it all: soul, funk, punk, afrobeat, rap. I've not heard anything quite like it." A remix album followed, then in 2011 the group released Janxta Funk! (Wonderwheel Records), which captured their "part janky, part gangsta" groove and solidified the Pimps' place among a new wave of progressive funk artists.

In the years since, the Pimps of Joytime toured almost nonstop coast to coast at major festivals like SXSW, Bonnaroo, All Good, Wakarusa and countless club dates -- more than 100 shows each year since 2012 -- steadily growing a devout fanbase that hinges on the thrill of the live show, and a desire for more.

This spring, fans will get that new chapter from the Pimps when they perform unreleased songs from Jukestone Paradise live on tour before the album's release in early fall 2014. The new record marks the studio debut of new drummer John Staten, who has been a staple on tour with the Pimps of Joytime for the last year, and also holds an incredible songwriting collaboration with Alex Toth of Rubblebucket.

"It's a more mature statement for us and speaks to how we've grown in the last few years," said lead singer and guitarist Brian J, who also doubles as producer on all the Pimps of Joytime albums. "In the past we've gone in a lot of different directions musically, but this record is more focused and takes you to a few distinct places -- it's harder, more blues-driven, and we can wait to see our fans' reaction at the show."

The April tour kicks off tonight in Baltimore, MD at the 8X10 and travels throughout major Northeast hubs including a hometown show in New York City Friday, April 12 at the Bowery Ballroom before the tour continues to the Midwest and Southeast.

In a world full of darkness and chaos, The Nth Power is on a mission to share the light -- announcing their "Fall In Love" 2014 North American tour. The tour's western leg is highlighted by a six-date West Coast concert series with British funk fusionists, The New Mastersounds, which kicks off Sept. 23 in Seattle, WA, before headlining two nights in Portland, OR Sept. 24 and 25, two nights in San Francisco, CA Sept. 26 and 27, and ending in Santa Cruz, CA Sept. 28.

The Nth Power brings together five seasoned talents from the funk, soul, rock, reggae and world-beat universes: guitarist and vocalist Nick Cassarino (Big Daddy Kane, Jennifer Hartswick Band), keyboardist and vocalist Nigel Hall (Lettuce, John Scofield, Pretty Lights, Warren Haynes), drummer and vocalist Nikki Glaspie (Beyonce, Dumpstaphunk), bassist Nate Edgar (John Brown's Body, Rubblebucket) and 110th generation West African percussionist, Weedie Braimah (Toubab Krewe).

Together, the fluid power and raw synergy of their vibe makes audiences want to dance, groove, make love or just stand there with goosebumps. But at the core of that vibe is a deviously simple concept -- the healing power of love.

“Our music is more than just music,” Glaspie said recently. “We’re on a mission to try to help people, and heal the world, and make people feel better about themselves, and just let them know that they are loved. There’s so much hate in the world, we feel that we can use this platform to make the world a better place.”

"Just know that when you hear this music, you're going to feel something -- you're going to connect with something higher than yourself," said West African percussionist Weedie Braimah. "With what's going on all over the world and on the news right now, people need to inspired by love now more than ever, and music is the universal language."

The Nth Power is currently recording their debut full length album, Abundance, anticipated for a March 2015 release date. The group put out an independent EP, Basic Minimum Skills Test, in April 2013 -- a year after they first joined forces in New Orleans for a late night Jazzfest performance on Patton Avenue. After a handful of brief tours and festival appearances since, The Nth Power comes full circle in 2014, sharing their powerful performances with a slew of new cities and venues across the country and overseas.

Today, The Nth Power and Cory Henry & The Funk Apostles announce 16 additional tour dates on their co-headlined "Funkapower" Spring Tour, with new stops in Texas, Tennessee, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky and on to the Mid-Atlantic in May and June.

The tour pairs a funky new solo project from Grammy-winning Snarky Puppy keyboardist, Cory Henry, with veteran soul dream-team, The Nth Power -- whose bandmembers have toured with Beyonce, Big Daddy Kane, John Brown's Body and Toubab Krewe. The two breakout groups will alternate opening and closing sets throughout their 33-city tour, which travels to 21 states throughout the Eastern US March 29-June 5.

The idea to join forces manifested shortly after The Nth Power and Snarky Puppy collided on Jam Cruise in January 2015, where The Nth Power celebrated their 100th live show together performing on the festival's main stage. Both groups' style and experience lent itself to such a beautiful pairing, which plans to blow audiences away with an awe-inspiring medley of mind-melting, intellectual, baby-making music.

"Cory [Henry] is seriously one of the greatest keyboardists of our time," said Hall, who cites legends like George Duke and Herbie Hancock as some of his earliest influences. "Just watching him makes me a better player. I can't wait to share the stage with him again."

The spring partnership marks the first national tour for Cory Henry & The Funk Apostles, who will perform original music in the style of James Brown, Prince, Stevie Wonder and Earth, Wind & Fire. The Nth Power plan to showcase unreleased songs like "Only Love" and "Walk on Water" from their forthcoming full-length studio album, Abundance, as well as slow jams like "Only You" from their 2013 EP, Basic Minimum Skills Test.

Formed from an impromptu performance during the 2012 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, The Nth Power -- drummer Nikki Glaspie (Beyonce, Dumpstaphunk), keyboardist Hall (Lettuce, Warren Haynes Band), guitarist Nick Cassarino (Big Daddy Kane), bassist Nate Edgar (John Brown's Body) and West African percussionist Weedie Braimah (Toubab Krewe) -- exploded onto the live touring circuit in 2014, traveling more than 80 cities across the US and internationally to Costa Rica and Australia. Their melody-centric formula fuses elements of funk, gospel, reggae, psychedelic jazz and world-beat with three-part vocal harmonies and soulful lyrics that testify to the healing power of music.

Following the spring tour with Henry, The Nth Power kicks off festival season at Wanee Music Festival Apr. 18 in Live Oak, FL performing a special Steely Dan tribute set. Other 2015 festival appearances will include Summer Camp Music Festival May 21-22 in Chilicothe, IL; Dark Star Jubilee May 23 in Thornville, OH; Wakarusa Music Festival June 7 in Ozark, AZ; Telluride Jazz Festival July 31 in Telluride CO; Gathering of the Vibes Aug. 1 in Bridgeport, CT; Werkout Music Festival Aug. 7 in Thornville, OH; Camp Barefoot Aug. 21 in Bartow, WV and others TBA.

Proving that soul music can be exponentially greater than the sum of its parts, The Nth Power is transcendence, personified. "When you hear this music, you're going to feel something – you're going to connect with something higher than yourself," the band explains in their mini-documentary, Welcome To The Nth Power.

Forged from an impromptu collaboration during the 2012 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the quintet conceives an other-worldly groove that draw elements of funk, jazz, gospel, reggae and world-beat to create musical energy of a higher power. Their melody-driven songs tap into a force that is simultaneously sexy and spiritual, with three-part vocal harmonies and lyrics that testify to the healing power of love.

The lineup brings together drummer Nikki Glaspie (Beyonce, Dumpstaphunk), guitarist Nick Cassarino (Big Daddy Kane, Jennifer Hartswick Band), bassist Nate Edgar (John Brown's Body), keyboardist Courtney Smith, and West African djembe master Weedie Braimah (Trombone Shorty, Toubab Krewe) on percussion.

They returned to New Orleans to release their independent EP, Basic Minimum Skills Test (April 2013), which quickly earned airplay from the city's legendary radio station, WWOZ, and was named one of the Top 10 Albums of 2013 by KDHX in St. Louis, MO. The Nth Power soon transitioned from part-time passion project to full-time touring machine. They have performed for major music rooms and festivals coast-to-coast and overseas, including Wakarusa, Electric Forest, Summer Camp, Wanee, Bear Creek and Australia's Caloundra Music Festival. Their uplifting live set eventually caught the ear of Sirius XM Radio, which regularly airs live recordings on its "Jam On" rock station.

You can catch Nth Power this week:

Fri, June 12 - Larimer Lounge, Denver, CO

Riding the wave of their 2015 album release, Jukestone Paradise, today, the Pimps of Joytime announce a whirlwind 2015 Fall Tour.

Performing their latest Brooklyn-bred funk and dance tunes, the group's high-energy tour kicks off in Burlington, VT Oct. 1 at Higher Ground. Highlight performances will include Chicago, IL Oct. 9 at Martyrs', Phases of the Moon Music & Arts Festival Oct. 16 in Ozark, AK, Halloween at the Gothic Theater in Englewood, CO Oct. 31, and the Fillmore in San Francisco, CA Nov. 14.

Anyone familiar with the Pimps of Joytime live experience knows the feeling—that moment when a deep bluesy groove morphs into a full-on EDM dance beat; the sensation when the wide-eyed audience collectively elevates to the band’s tangible energy. With the 2015 release of Jukestone Paradise, the Pimps of Joytime raise the bar of their own potential with swagger to spare, crafting songs that ring out like the soundtrack for a ride through Brooklyn's multi-cultural neighborhoods, where their sound materialized.

“It’s a sonic tapestry that’s representative of this time and place that we live in,” says lead guitarist and singer Brian J. “In terms of genres, everything has been done. But, not every combination has been done.”

Pulling Brian J’s deep discography of influences, the magic behind Jukestone Paradise sparked more than a decade ago, when he first penned anthems like “Sky” and “Freedom Dancer.” The album's recording sessions took the energy further, recording with the full band—dual female vocalists and percussionists Mayteana Morales and Cole WilliamsX, bassist and keyboardist David Bailis, and drummer John Staten—over looped riffs on-the-spot, culminating in signature tracks like “Red Golden” and “Body Party.” With the addition of a few friends like Ivan Neville, who adds New Orleans flavor to “Sky,” and Rubblebucket’s Alex Toth, who co-wrote the quirky and infectious “Dance Cardia,” Jukestone Paradise takes the group's undeniable musicianship to a higher plane.

And that’s where the Pimps excel, by mashing up ‘70s funk with a house beat, and then pulling off the whole thing with a live band. In-house samples and creative effects (vocals run through a guitar amp, for example) ensure that every moment is rich with intrigue. For listeners weary of today’s DJ culture but eager to dance with abandon, the Pimps of Joytime is the antidote.

You might accurately call this Brooklyn-bred quintet a ‘post-genre’ band; a group whose sound—even within a single song—mirrors the diversity of our era’s wide musical tastes, like mashing up ‘70s funk with a house beat, or salsa infused hip-hop. It all goes into the Pimps’ pot, over a rich roux built on a foundation of groove.

Just as Brooklyn has changed in the decade since the Pimps landed there, so has the band’s sound. But as Williamsburg gentrifies, the Pimps of Joytime’s continuing multi-dimensional evolution keeps the borough’s true spirit alive.

Florida's king of sacred steel, Roosevelt Collier, will bring his revolving superjam to the West Coast for the first time, announcing the California Get Down Nov. 5-7 in Northern California. With Collier front and center on pedal steel, the all-star lineup features bassist Norwood Fisher (Fishbone), guitarist Eric McFadden (Parliament Funkadelic Allstars) and drummer Duane Trucks (Widespread Panic) performing a free-flowing gumbo of electrifying grooves. The three-day run kicks off Thursday, Nov. 5 in Nevada City, CA at the Crazy Horse, followed by San Francisco, CA Friday, Nov. 6 at the Boom Boom Room with special guests Will Blades and Ronkat (P-Funk Allstars), before closing out the weekend Saturday, Nov. 7 in Chico, CA at Lost on Main.

Known for his legendary “jambushes” at festivals across the country, Collier has hosted a series Get Downs in Colorado, North Carolina and Florida over the past year. Pulling from his deep pool of musical brethren, Collier's superjams feature a rotating cast of talent, including members of String Cheese Incident, the Motet, Umphrey's McGee, Lettuce, Big Gigantic, Leftover Salmon and more.

After the California tour, Collier returns to Boulder, CO Thursday, Nov. 19 to host his third Colorado Get Down at the Fox Theatre, starring Bill Nershi (String Cheese Incident), Dominic Lalli and Jeremy Salken (Big Gigantic), Joel Cummins (Umphrey's McGee) and Matt Lapham (Shak Nasti).

About Roosevelt Collier:

Soft-spoken by nature, South Florida-bred Roosevelt Collier does his hollering on the pedal steel guitar. Raised in the "sacred steel" tradition of the House of God gospel church, Roosevelt built his reputation alongside his uncles and cousins in The Lee Boys, known for their spirited, soul-shaking live performances. Seated front and center, "The Dr." leaves an indelible mark on listeners, flooring audiences with his lightning-fast slide work. A master of the "jambush" Roosevelt has logged hair-raising performances with some of live music's most prestigious acts, from the Allman Brothers to Del McCoury, Widespread Panic to Yonder Mountain String Band, Snarky Puppy to Karl Denson's Tiny Universe. In 2015 he stepped out with legendary bassist Oteil Burbridge to form the Oteil & Roosevelt Band, whose gospel funk brand of Southern soul stunned audiences at festival like Summercamp, Delfest, Peach Festival and Magnolia Festival. Whether hosting superjams, guesting with national acts on tour or as an Artist at Large at festivals,  no matter what the context, when Roosevelt Collier takes the stage, the ear-to-ear grins can’t help but be contagious.

"I got news today that The 1up - Colfax suddenly decided to cancel all future shows, including the Colorado Get Down scheduled for this Fri & Sat in Denver. I just want to apologize to the fans, because this was a real shock to all of us, and encourage everyone to get their refund from the venue. Know that we are working hard to relocate the Denver shows for this weekend... and that Thursday night at The Fox Theatre in Boulder is still on! Please stay tuned, much love - Roosevelt"

Just yesterday, just two days ahead of their Red Rocks debut, Brooklyn's Pimps of Joytime release their lighthearted new music video for "Dance Cardia."

Directed by Jean Shepherd, the video was shot on location in the band's hometown of Brooklyn, NY. It reveals frontman Brian J as "The Hustler" versus his childhood foil, "The People's Champ", as they converge for a climactic game of Jenga by the train tracks.

"Dance Cardia" is the last single from the Pimps' most recent LP, Jukestone Paradise (2015, Write Home Records). Brian J co-wrote the funky dance track with Alex Toth of Rubblebucket.

The Pimps premiered the video this morning through the Denver Post's music blog, Reverb, as a gift for their Colorado fans before they perform on the legendary Red Rocks stage for the first time as a group this Thursday, July 14.

"Colorado has been real good to us over the past 6 years. There seems to be a genuine appreciation for what we do out here," said Brian J. "It's a privilege to be invited to play the amazing Red Rocks Amphitheater and we have our fans to thank for it."

Pimps of Joytime perform next in Telluride, CO tomorrow, July 13, headlining Telluride Mountain Village's free summer concert series at Sunset Plaza. Then they travel to Morrison, CO to open the Red Rocks show with Galactic and Boombox Thursday, July 14

Sacred steel guitarist Roosevelt Collier will join David Shaw's Big River Get Down as a special guest artist at large when the one-day festival, presented by Miller Lite, commences Saturday, Sept. 10 at RiversEdge Amphitheater in Hamilton, Ohio.

Collier will join friends and festival headliners, The Revivalists, with a guest appearance on pedal steel guitar, as well as several other acts on the day's stacked lineup, which already includes The Wild Feathers, Maggie Koerner, The Temperance Movement, The Marcus King Band, and The Trongone Band.

South Florida's resident master of the steel guitar, Collier is known for his lightning fast slide work on the pedal and lap steel. Raised in the "sacred steel" tradition of the House of God gospel church, he built his reputation alongside his uncles and cousins in The Lee Boys. In recent years, Collier as forged his own name in live music as one of the most sought-after guest performers in the jam scene today. A regular "Artist at Large," he has logged hair-raising festival performances with some of live music's most prestigious acts, from the Allman Brothers to Del McCoury, Widespread Panic, String Cheese Incident, and his good friends in The Revivalists.

2016 marks the second annual Big River Get Down and the fifth consecutive year The Revivalists have performed at RiversEdge. For Shaw, hosting this festival in his hometown is about more than just a day of phenomenal music; it's an effort to make the City of Hamilton an even better place to live, work and play.  To help David accomplish this mission, all proceeds from the festival will be dedicated to the City of Hamilton's 4th of July fireworks and to provide additional free concerts at RiversEdge Amphitheater.

"This event is extraordinarily special to me because I believe that music can be the foundation and catalyst for big change and growth, said Shaw.  "Not just for the city, but for the people deep inside at their core.  When others from around the tri-state area get wind of what we're doing here, they're going to take notice. A city like Hamilton has a rich history filled with a lot of interesting characters, twists and turns.  I believe that the Big River Get Down will serve as a turning point for the city in terms of togetherness, morale and pride.  I can't wait to see what the future holds for both the City of Hamilton and the Big River Get Down. We're in this as one, we're in this together."

Big River Get Down Lineup Announcement

David Shaw and his band The Revivalists have garnered major national recognition lately. They made their national TV debut on the Today Show with their new radio hit "Wish I Knew You" and were named as one of Rolling Stone's "10 Artists You Need To Know". The seven-piece band's world-class musicianship is front and center at their renowned live shows as guitar, drums, pedal steel guitar, bass, saxophone, keyboard, and trumpet collide with enigmatic, lead singer/guitarist David Shaw's soulful, swaggering vocals to create a sonic imprint all their own. Boasting many sold-out shows, a #2 debut on the Billboard Alternative Albums Chart, and more than 4 million streams on Spotify, The Revivalists are quickly making a name for themselves with their eclectic Southern mix of jazz-funk grooves, blues rock grit, and warm melodies.

There's something intangible about a first-time festival, and the community it brings together to celebrate the universal love language -- music. Suwannee Rising did just that last week, April 4-6, gifting roughly 3,500 visitors to the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park with a brand new experience under the trees of Live Oak, FL.

THe New Mastersounds

The event was a small miracle in and of itself, having little more than two months to transform from an idea to reality. Since the park's beloved Wanee Festival was absent from its April calendar for the first time since 2005, a new promoter stepped in to fill the void. Suwannee Rising's music lineup boasted a mix of jam, soul, rock and funk from artists like Lettuce, moe., New Mastersounds, Oteil Burbridge & Friends, Ghost Note, Dumpstaphunk, Melody Trucks Band, and more.

Suwannee is a great place for kids of all ages

And while notes of Wanee jams often hung in the air, a palpable and funky energy reminiscent of the late Bear Creek Festival also made its presence known, sparking numerous artist collaborations and spontaneous sit ins throughout the weekend. Fans found their moment of zen at the festival's Sanctuary Tent joining in on morning yoga and guided couples massage. And those who popped for VIP enjoyed a private viewing area with its own bar and lounge.

Melody Trucks | Suwannee Rising

Florida native Melody Trucks set the tone on Thursday, performing soulful southern originals and also paying tribute to her family's legacy and mentor Col. Bruce Hampton. She brought up vocalist Lamar Williams Jr. (son of Allman bassist Lamar Williams) for a powerful version of the Brothers' "Don't Keep Me Wondering." Trucks also made guest appearances of her own throughout the weekend, joining fellow Floridian Kaleigh Baker and Holey Miss Moley on vocals and percussion.

Oteil and Friends | Suwannee Rising

Friday night belonged to Oteil Burbridge & Friends, which featured Jeff Chimenti (Dead & Company), Scott Metzger (Joe Russo’s Almost Dead), Neal Casal (Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Circles Around The Sun) and John Kimock (Steve's son & Mike Gordon Band). Paul Levine introduced the set by reminiscing about his love of Bear Creek, addressing the loss of Oteil's brother Kofi, and expressing his hopes for the future of Suwannee Rising. The group then performed an incredible set of classic covers from the Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead and the Beatles, among others. Later that night, Oteil returned to the main stage for a guest appearance with funk ragers Lettuce, who closed the night out Friday.

Ghost Note | Suwannee Rising

Funk supergroup Ghost Note made a huge splash at Suwannee Rising. It was their first time on the festival grounds, though you'd never know it. Their Grammy-winning percussion duo, Nate Worth and Robert "Sput" Searight, made guest appearances with Lettuce Friday, while the group's flashy bassist MonoNeon jumped in with dirty New Orleans funk act Dumpstaphunk on "Up for the Downstroke" Saturday afternoon.

Dumpstaphunk | Suwannee Rising

In addition to the Melody Trucks Band, Florida natives Come Back Alice, LPT, Kaleigh Baker's Someday Honey, The Difference and The Fritz all represented for their state's vibrant music scene in style.

Suwannee Rising | Live Oak, FL

The camping spirit also rang true at Suwannee Rising, as large group campsites from Wanee and Bear Creek came together for the first time. For those lucky enough to find it, one campsite dubbed the "Shelly Smith n Co's Dirty Poe Disco" boasted a fully rigged performance area where musicians would stop by. Orchestrated by bassist Matt Lapham of Shak Nasti and Roosevelt Collier Band, guest performers included Melody Trucks, Kaleigh Baker, members of Ghost Note and Lettuce, who played quietly so not to get shut down by park security as they jammed into the early morning hours.

Lettuce | Suwannee Rising

All in, Suwannee Rising's warm sense of community and vibrant performances welcomed a brand new spring tradition that fans of the park should look forward to for many years to come.

Multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer James Casey is pleased to announce the launch of Aux Chord (www.auxchord.live), an online music venue offering ticketed live stream events in the wake of COVID-19. Created by musicians for musicians, Aux Chord seeks to reduce distance as a barrier to enjoying live music. The site connects artists and their fans by creating a platform for online performances that emphasize quality audio, video and showmanship.

Aux Chord will roll out its first event this Thursday, June 11 with a showcase starring Casey at 9 pm EST. Tickets are available for purchase now at www.auxchord.live, with other performances coming soon from Jennifer Hartswick and Nick Cassarino, Natalie Cressman and Ian Faquini, Louis Cato and Erin Boyd.

Trey Anastasio Band | Brooklyn Bowl | 2019

“The goal of Aux Chord is to supply a place for the music community to continue to grow and thrive, and supply a place for music fans to be able to see great live music with great picture and sound,” Casey explains. “I doubt we’re the first to do this, and we definitely won’t be the last, but hopefully this can be a positive thing for the artists at large.”

Casey is a resident of New York City and touring member of the Trey Anastasio Band. Towards the end of February, he anticipated the pandemic’s potential to erase nearly a calendar year’s worth of concert dates for many artists like himself. In a brainstorm session with partner Ayla Cobb while quarantined, he decided that a proper online venue could be the solution. With the help of web developer Stephen Small, Aux Chord: A Live Streaming Venue was created.

The site offers a platform for musicians to showcase behind a paywall – a venue to perform on without asking for charity. Musicians who perform on Aux Chord will set their own ticket prices, and receive a majority of ticket revenues. All fees are nominal and transparent, with no gouging or high overhead.

James Casey

“Hopefully this can be a resource for musicians, especially independent artists, in a time where we honestly aren't able to perform and do what we've been working towards our whole lives. But what we can do is these live streams and create art for people to consume, especially considering that everyone is going through a whole lot right now,” Casey said. “This isn’t like going live on Facebook or Instagram and busking. The platform is about elevating that experience and really performing for the people. We’re putting on a show.”

Acclaimed music photographer Michael Weintrob has announced the launch of his new streaming music & art series, Instrumenthead Live. The series comes in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic as an opportunity to provide safe, premium concerts to music lovers everywhere.

Programming is set to launch on August 6th with its first original show, “Music With 5 Questions” featuring acclaimed instrumentalists Jennifer Hartswick (Trey Anastasio Band), Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band), and Kris Myers (Umphrey’s McGee). The Instrumenthead Live streaming platform has a stacked lineup of performances scheduled through the month of August including Daniel Donato, Stolen Faces, Lady Couch, The SloBeats, as well as Mimi Naja & Friends. These concerts will all be available on their newly launched site, instrumentheadlive.com, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Nashville MusiCares.

"I have been fortunate to share space, through my photography, with many musicians around the world. This pandemic has affected us all, in one way or another. This new series is our opportunity to create a safe and fun environment in my Nashville studio for everyone to enjoy high-quality audio and video in a unique gallery where the art is curated specifically for the artist performing. We are empowering live art.” says Weintrob.

Weintrob is no stranger to bootstrapping unique concepts. In 2017 the photographer launched his INSTRUMENTHEAD book, which took home the IPPY-Award for most-outstanding book design that year. Since 2011, Weintrob has been showing his work all over the world. These exhibitions featured live performances that accompanied the artwork on display. Instrumenthead Live is the virtual complement to the immersive music and art experiences that Michael has been curating. By bringing together unique groups of superstars and local legends based in the Nashville music scene we are supporting our musical ecosystem. Award-winning instrumentalist and vocalist Molly Tuttle will perform a very special album release concert on Thursday, August 27 via Instrumenthead Live, a new streaming service created by acclaimed music photographer Michael Weintrob. The stripped-down, acoustic performance will preview Tuttle’s new covers album, ...but i’d rather be with you (out August 28 via Compass Records), with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the National Alopecia Areata Foundation. The concert stream drops at 8pm EST on www.instrumentheadlive.com, and will be available to view afterwards on-demand.

Instrumenthead Live is Weintrob’s streaming platform that launched earlier this month celebrating music and art, together. The multi-cam virtual concert series offers a mix of live and pre-recorded performances from Weintrob’s Nashville photography studio, with fine art prints of the performers’ Instrumenthead portraits available to purchase with tickets. A portion of the proceeds from each show will also benefit a charity chosen by the performer.

Tuttle lives with alopecia areata, a common autoimmune disease that causes hair loss, and chose to benefit a charity close to her heart. She hopes to raise awareness and help normalize alopecia-induced hair loss for the 6.8 million Americans affected by the disease. “The National Alopecia Areata Foundation has helped me and countless other alopecians find a path to self-acceptance and love,” Tuttle said. “I’m thrilled to give back to the foundation by donating a portion of proceeds from the show and auctioning off prints of photos taken by Michael Weintrob that celebrate Alopecia.” To learn more about her journey living with alopecia areata, read here

A virtuosic guitarist with a gift for insightful songwriting, Molly Tuttle has become an integral member of Nashville’s folk, bluegrass and Americana communities since moving to Music City in 2015. The California native is currently nominated for the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) “Female Vocalist of the Year” and “Guitar Player of the Year” at this year’s Bluegrass Music Awards. Tuttle became the first female to win the coveted “Guitar Player of the Year” IBMA Award in 2017. The following year she not only repeated the category, but also won “Instrumentalist of the Year” at the Americana Music Awards; and in 2019, NPR included Tuttle’s original tune “Take The Journey” in their list of the 25 Best Songs of the Year.

Tuttle’s new album, “...but i’d rather be with you” puts her spin on 10 well-chosen tracks from across the musical spectrum and the decades – from FKA Twigs to Cat Stevens, Rancid to Karen Dalton. “With my new record “...but I’d rather be with you” I chose to cover some of my favorite artists who inspire me to be true to myself in my life and in my art,” Tuttle said. “When I play music and when I share my alopecia story with the world I hope to show others that it’s ok to be yourself no matter what.”

Molly Tuttle Instrumenthead Portrait by Michael Weintrob

Instrumenthead is Michael Weintrob's signature portrait series that captures a surrealist look into the soul of a musician – not through their eyes, but through their trademark instrument, which obscures the artist's face in each photograph. To date, more than 600 musicians from around the world have had their Instrumenthead portrait taken – ranging from well-known artists like Derek Trucks, Bootsy Collins, and Billy Strings to cult instrumentalists and eclectic performers of every genre. After presenting a series of pop-up exhibitions at events like the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Weintrob relocated from Brooklyn, NY, and opened a brick and mortar studio in East Nashville in 2016. The following year, he published INSTRUMENTHEAD (Magnet Bound Press), a fine art book that won the Independent Publisher Book Award (IPPY) for Most Outstanding Design. Now during the 2020 pandemic, Weintrob continues to build upon the Instrumenthead experience by showcasing immersive music and art experiences through Instrumenthead Live.

“I have been fortunate to share space, through my photography, with many musicians around the world. This pandemic has affected us all, in one way or another. This new series is our opportunity to create a safe and fun environment in my Nashville studio for everyone to enjoy high-quality audio and video in a unique gallery where the art is curated specifically for the artist performing. We are empowering live art,” Weintrob said.

An estimated 24,000 new songs get released every day. Yet no artist or label has conceived the album-length single before, where one song and theme is reimagined multiple times as a cohesive, collaborative release. Today, Highest Frequency Records announces just that with the March 5, 2021 release of Book of One by Light Warriors.

The Connecticut-based ensemble embraces a message of global unity and positivity on the album’s original single “One”, which is then reworked and reimagined eight times over, featuring guest appearances by indiginous poet and activist Lyla June Johnston, Ruff Scott of Easy Star All-Stars, Ghana’s Kwadjo Spiri, Ethiopian reggae artist Sydney Salmon, and more.

One, volume of unity;

One, divine light shining individually;

One, collectively transforming community;

One, peace in our human family.

“It’s as much an audio essay about oneness as it is a unified musical statement from international artists calling for oneness,” said Erik Rabasca, founding member of Light Warriors and owner of Highest Frequency Records. “These are not remixes, but rather reconstructions that share meditations on topics of unity, inter-spirituality, generational cycles, transformation and, yes, oneness.”

Light Warriors originally released “One” as a Bandcamp-only single on Juneteenth 2020 in the wake of George Floyd’s death and subsequent Black Lives Matter protests. The group then donated its proceeds to NAACP Legal Defense Fund and The Brotherhood/Sister Sol, a social justice development organization offering supportive programs for Black and Latino youth in impoverished communities. The original Juneteenth version of “One” has since been remixed and reworked into nine new versions on Book of One, covering a range of styles from hip-hop, reggae and funk to trap, dub, dance and improvisation.

Light Warriors’ innovative release celebrates Connecticut’s diverse music community and showcases longtime artist relationships as well as newer ones that the group established during a delegation to Ethiopia for interspiritual harmony. The unifying trait among all artists featured on the record is service — service to music, to the collective good of the community and to charities hoping to affect the world through positive change.

In kind with that philosophy, a portion of proceeds from Book of One will benefit WhyHunger, Harry Chapin’s nonprofit organization that strives to end hunger and poverty by connecting people to nutritious, affordable food and by supporting grassroots solutions that inspire self-reliance and community empowerment.

Originally formed as a solo project in 2016 by vocalist and guitarist Rabasca in New York City, Light Warriors now features band members Steven Jean Baptiste (drums), Kris Brewer (saxophone), Jamar Jabari (percussion and vocals), Karen Johnstone (keyboards and vocals), Liz Page (percussion and vocals) and Angel Sanchez (bass). Together, the ensemble discovers an ancient-to-future synthesis of influences that blend rock, funk and reggae with global indie sensibilities to create a sound uniquely their own.

Today, New Orleans funk icon George Porter Jr. and his band the Runnin' Pardners release Crying For Hope via Controlled Substance Sounds Labs and Color Red. Recorded remotely during quarantine, the 12-track album marks the funk-rock group's first full-length studio release in a decade and boasts a mix of unreleased Pardners tunes and new cuts inspired by the social justice movement. It is a snapshot of the modern state of funk — and a testament to its place in the greater social conversation — from one of the most prolific and influential bassists of a generation.

With the release of Crying For Hope, Porter also becomes New Orleans' first musical artist to drop an album art NFT. Also known as "non-fungible tokens", NFTs are unique digital collectibles that offer a new way for musicians and artists to creatively engage fans outside of traditional merch. Created in collaboration with Crying For Hope cover artist JT Lucchesi and Home Team Designs, the lucky bidder of Crying For Hope's NFT will also receive signed memorabilia and an opportunity to have "Coffee With George" during a private meet-and-greet.

Led by Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award-winning bassist Porter — a founding member of New Orleans' seminal funk band, The Meters — the Runnin' Pardners are drummer Terrence "Groove Guardian" Houston, keyboardist Michael Lemmler and guitarist Chris Adkins, with guest vocalist Mia Borders.

George Porter & Runnin' Pardners are scheduled to perform in support of Crying For Hope's release the weekend of April 16-17 at Suwannee Surprise, a socially distanced music festival at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Fla.

Tue, 07/06/2021 - 11:05 am

Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award-Winner and original member of The Meters George Porter Jr. has released his compelling music video for “Crying For Hope," the title track of his recent studio album. The video's dynamic, contemplative visuals evoke the complexities of the song’s call to action. It premiered exclusively via Billboard, who praised the track, calling it, "a powerful anthem that combines the signature sound of Porter's iconic funk group The Meters with a message of resistance and urgency for 2021."

Porter says of the social justice anthem: “‘Crying For Hope’ was inspired by the continued racial tension in our country. I wrote the song from my own pain and experience watching the events of last summer. I really just wanted to be able to feel hopeful for the future. I think the video captures both feelings of the song, the seriousness of the issue and that feeling of hope and change we all wish for.”

Crying For Hope was Porter’s first studio release since 2015 with his longtime touring project the Runnin’ Pardners, which now features Porter on bass, Michael Lemmler on keys, Chris Adkins on guitar and Terrence Houston on drums. Released in March 2021 via Controlled Substance Sound Labs/Color Red, the album showcases a mix of unreleased Pardners tunes, robust new anthems and purely instrumental funk. The band collaborated remotely during the pandemic to re-record and mix the album’s 12 songs, culminating in Porter & the Runnin Pardners’ most compelling release to date.

George Porter Jr & Runnin’ Pardners will perform in support of the new album at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival’s triumphant 2021 return in October. In addition to his weekly hometown shows at the Maple Leaf Bar every Monday, Porter will perform several additional tour dates this month:

Acclaimed drummer and vocalist Nikki Glaspie, founding member of The Nth Power, has assembled a masterful new funk collective known as KAMANI. The group brings together world-class musicians that represent members of Prince, Beyonce, TOTO and more, and today announce their 2021 tour dates.

KAMANI is often spearheaded by one of the most dynamic rhythmic duos assembled in recent years, starring Glaspie and multiple Grammy-winning multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Robert “Sput” Searight of Snarky Puppy, Ghost-Note and TOTO. Their chemistry radiates throughout the center of KAMANI’s soul-thumping sound. Florida bassist and member of the Roosevelt Collier Trio Matt Lapham and guitarist and vocalist Kat Dyson, a longtime member of both Prince and Cyndi Lauper’s live acts, round out the group’s core with Glaspie; while a rotating cast of acclaimed keyboardists and synth-masters, which includes Nigel Hall of Lettuce, Xavier Taplin of Ghost-Note and Shaun Martin of Snarky Puppy, complete the group’s fluid lineup.

On a mission to “heal America with the funk,” KAMANI’s music embodies the therapeutic tree for which it is named. Drawing influence from The Gap Band, Prince and James Brown, vocals of Glaspie and Dyson harmonize with gospel-like intent, while deep funk, soul and jazz permeate their groove. Although the group is a relatively new project, their interplay and cohesiveness on stage evokes the air of a band that’s been together for decades.

“We play the funk a bit differently because we’ve played with the masters. We’re taking that knowledge and keeping it alive,” said Glaspie. “I’m a purist when it comes to funk music. There’s no water in this — it’s real, unfiltered, uncut, unadulterated funk. We show up and do what we do best, which is make people dance for two hours. It’s a dance party. That’s my main job playing drums in general, but specifically relating to this band, is to get people moving. Anybody can relate to us because you can’t help but dance.”

KAMANI first assembled in October 2020 and then embarked on a six-night run in Winter Park, Florida the following November. “I have never heard a set of music that moved me more,” said reviewer Scott Hopkins for MusicFestNews. “The outpouring of love going from band to audience and back was palpable all evening.”

After a two-week spring tour in May 2021, KAMANI returns to the stage this summer for a string of performances across the Southeast in August. Live music fans in Charleston and Raleigh will be treated with a special opening set by virtuosic 14-year-old multi-instrumentalist Justin Lee Schultz, who will also open a show with The Nth Power this fall. KAMANI then returns to the stage in October with special guest Nigel Hall for the much-anticipated return of Hulaween Music Festival, while stops across the deep South and Midwest round out the year.

Today, soulful roots-rock trio The Nth Power announce tour dates for their “Fall Back In Love Tour.” Kicking off Aug. 27 at the Utah Arts Festival in Salt Lake City, the 20-date tour features performances at festivals and music rooms in 11 states coast-to-coast — ending with a special performance at Suwannee Hulaween Oct. 30 featuring original band members Nigel Hall and Weedie Braimah.

The new dates mark The Nth Power’s first return to active touring since the start of the pandemic. The celebrated collective — which features guitarist and vocalist Nick Cassarino, drummer and vocalist Nikki Glaspie and bassist Nate Edgar — believes in music as a higher power, tapping into vibrations that are both spiritual and sexy. The band’s simple-yet potent messages of love are spoken in a language that anyone, on any continent, can easily understand.

The Nth Power reunited for the first time in more than a year for a performance at the 2021 Peach Music Festival in July. They are eager to reconnect with fans as they look ahead to releasing a new studio album in the near future. “Something very special happens when the three of us get together, and we can’t wait to show everyone what's next,” said Glaspie.

With the recent surge in Covid cases nationwide, The Nth Power asks those in attendance to do their part to keep live music safe as possible for everyone involved, and check with local venues for admission policies. “Our fans are like family — everyone's health, safety and happiness is our highest priority. Please wear a mask at our shows or, even better, get tested before you walk in the door,” the band says. "Regardless of how you choose to stay safe, remember that we're all in this together — and that The Nth Power loves you."

Celebrated soul collective The Nth Power proudly announce their long-awaited album, Reverence, will release Wednesday, Sept. 29. The trio, featuring guitarist and vocalist Nick Cassarino, drummer and vocalist Nikki Glaspie and bassist Nate Edgar, have emerged from a quiet pandemic to drop their first studio release in six years. Co-produced by the band with additional production from Rick St. Hilaire (Alicia Keys, Tribe Called Quest, Earth Wind and Fire) and Will Bradford (SeepeopleS, theWorst), Reverence was recorded at legendary Tree Sound Studios in Atlanta and Chillhouse Studios in Boston and offers 11 transcendent originals that represent the group’s most profound and inspired work to date.

Praised for their world-class musicianship and intensely charismatic live performances, The Nth Power hails from diverse musical backgrounds, races and creeds. The trio brings together some of the most coveted backing musicians in the game: renowned funk drummer and vocalist Nikki Glaspie, Beyonce’s former world-touring drummer who’s worked with Maceo Parker, Chaka Kahn, Ivan Neville, Robert Randolph and has been a guest drummer multiple times on Late Night With Seth Meyers; bassist Nate Edgar, longtime member of legendary reggae Billboard chart-toppers, John Brown's Body; and guitarist and lead vocalist/songwriter Nick Cassarino, known for his work with Big Daddy Kane and collaborations with Jennifer Hartswick and Christian McBride. The Nth Power has garnered praise from Relix, Consequence, Huffington Post, Okayplayer, Modern Drummer and more for their passionate anthems and intense live performances.

Both musically and lyrically, Reverence presents a full-circle evolution in the trio’s distinctive sound, which taps into an energy that is often both sensual and spiritual, infusing high doses of rock, soul, funk, reggae, gospel and rhythm and blues. The new songs spread a deep message of hope, empathy, gratitude, self-forgiveness and, above all, attest to the universal power of love.

The Nth Power dedicates Reverence to the memory of their longtime friend and musical brother Kofi Burbridge of the Tedeschi Trucks Band, who passed away in February 2019. The Grammy-winning keyboardist blesses 10 out of 11 tracks on the album with his presence, elevating the robust new songs with some of the final musical recordings of his career.

“It means everything that Kofi was playing with us before his transition,” says Cassarino. “He brought the same energy to the studio that he brought to the stage, that he brought to rehearsal, that he brought to dinner — greatness.”

The Nth Power dives deep out of the gate on Reverence with the album’s lead track “Reach Out”, which offers a mission statement of hope and strength through self-doubt. “A New Day” presents one of the band’s most approachable melodic moments to date while “Joy” is an uplifting tune that dabbles in both bossa nova and jazz flourishes and features a delightful flute solo by Burbridge.

The Nth Power reprises two classic songs from previous albums — “Spirits” and “Holy Rain.” The new treatment on “Spirits” features guest vocalists Ivan Neville and Nick Daniels III of Dumpstaphunk as well as an appearance by legendary saxophonist Maceo Parker. Celebrated vocalist Cheryl Pepsii shines as a guest on “Holy Rain” and the gospel-leaning “Freedom.” “I Will Never Leave You” slows down with a heartfelt promise of steadfast support through adversity. Cassarino wrote the song shortly after he and the band connected with the Harold Robinson Foundation (of which Glaspie is now a board member) and experienced the organization’s first-hand efforts to change the lives of at-risk youth in metro Los Angeles. “Take My Soul” tells the story of a runaway slave and brings an Americana-blues departure for the group, while the infectiously funky vibe on “Tribe” returns to the band’s rhythmic roots — and reinforces the album’s overall message of empowerment and appreciation.

Acclaimed soul-rock trio, The Nth Power, will extend their “Fall Back In Love Tour” with nine additional Midwest tour dates in November and a three-night Northeast New Year's Eve run, the band announces today. The esteemed collective, which features guitarist and vocalist Nick Cassarino (Jennifer Hartswick Band), bassist Nate Edgar (John Brown’s Body) and drummer and vocalist Nikki Glaspie (Beyonce) performs in support of their newly released studio album, Reverence.

Described as “a live band to truly adore” by Glide, the versatile and genre-bending group will bring their explosive live set to music rooms across the Midwest throughout the first two weeks of November – with notable performances in Detroit, Chicago, Cincinnati, Columbus, Indianapolis and Memphis – following festival performances at Hangtown Festival in Placerville, California Oct. 22-23 and Suwannee Hulaween in Live Oak, Florida Oct. 30. The Nth Power then returns to the Northeast to ring in 2022 with a trio of shows in Waterbury, Vermont; Albany, New York and Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Both musically and lyrically, The Nth Power taps into an energy that is often both sensual and spiritual, infusing high doses of American rock, soul, funk and rhythm and blues. Reverence presents a full-circle evolution in the trio’s distinctive sound, offering a more mature expression of their collective talent that shares a deep message of hope, empathy, gratitude, self-forgiveness and, above all, the universal power of love. Watch The Nth Power perform “Reach Out” live at Paste Studios HERE.

Independently released on Sept. 29 and distributed by The Orchard, Reverence is dedicated to the memory of Grammy-winning keyboardist Kofi Burbridge, who guests on keys and flute throughout. Other featured guests on the album include renowned saxophonist Maceo Parker, vocalists Ivan Neville and Nick Daniels III of Dumpstaphunk, vocalist Cheryl Pepsii Riley and keyboardist Amy Bellamy.

Concert attendees to The Nth Power’s live set will experience compelling new songs from the new record – songs like “Reach Out” which encourages listeners to build a better world for those around them, and “I Will Never Leave You,” which was inspired by Cassarino’s first trip to a camp run by the Harold Robinson Foundation, a charity that supports at-risk youth in metro Los Angeles. Arguably the most intriguing new departure for the band’s live act is the Americana-driven “Take My Soul” which dives head first into traditional blues treatments with a tale of a runaway slave. But fans will also enjoy some of the band’s beloved anthems, like “Only Love” and new treatments to signature songs like “Spirits” during the live show.

No matter the night, The Nth Power spreads a message of love and understanding with a world-class amalgamation of talent that will inspire audiences to dance, groove, make love or just stand there with goosebumps.

Nikki Glaspie's all-pro funk tribute KAMANI will come together for a trio of Colorado dates in December, the band announces today. The fluid collective is set to perform Dec. 16 in Vail at Shakedown Bar, Dec. 17 in Nederland at the Caribou Room and Dec. 18 in Denver at Cervantes. Their explosive live show pays homage to the masters of funk music – The Gap Band, James Brown, The Meters, Prince and more – as performed by musicians who've studied under many of the masters themselves.

KAMANI's lineup features drummer and vocalist Glaspie (Beyonce, Dumpstahunk, Maceo Parker, The Nth Power), drummer and percussionist Sput Searight (Ghost-Note, Snarky Puppy, TOTO), guitarist Kat Dyson (Prince), keyboardist Xavier Taplin (Ghost-Note) and bassist Matt Lapham (Roosevelt Collier, Shak Nasti).

On a mission to “heal America with the funk,” the group's tribute set delivers deep cuts and reimagined classics from artists like The Gap Band, Prince and James Brown – and showcases arguably the most compelling rhythmic pairing of the year in Glaspie and Searight.

“We play the funk a bit differently because we’ve played with the masters. We’re taking that knowledge and keeping it alive,” said Glaspie. “I’m a purist when it comes to funk music. There’s no water in this – it’s real, unfiltered, uncut, unadulterated funk."

KAMANI is a pandemic project that came together in fall 2020 in Glaspie's current city of Austin, Texas and first performed for a six-night run in Winter Park, Florida the following month. “I have never heard a set of music that moved me more,” said reviewer Scott Hopkins for MusicFestNews following their first live shows. “The outpouring of love going from band to audience and back was palpable all evening.”

The group's core trio features Glaspie, Dyson and Lapham with a rotating lineup of players that often features Searight and Taplin, but has also included Shaun Martin and Nigel Hall. After a series of spring and summer 2021 tour dates and October 2021 festival performances at Hangtown Music Festival and Suwannee Hulaween, KAMANI is set to finish their year in the Rockies with a bang.

Today, The Nth Power proudly announces their partnership with the live music streaming and download platform, nugs.net, with live recordings streaming now. The acclaimed trio, whose studio album Reverence made the first-round list of 2022 Grammy nominations, today released 12 archival sets that reveal the progression of The Nth Power’s songs and lineups across nearly a decade of incendiary live performances – from their debut show as a band in 2012 to their first post-pandemic concert in 2021.

Hand-picked by longtime bandmates Nikki Glaspie, Nick Cassarino and Nate Edgar, the curated archives showcase former members Nigel Hall, Weedie Braimah and Courtney Smith, as well as special guests like beloved keyboardist Kofi Burbridge (to whom The Nth Power's new album is dedicated), legendary New Orleans percussionist Bill Summers and Jennifer Hartswick and James Casey of Trey Anastasio Band.

In a video posted to the band’s socials this afternoon, Glaspie said: “I’m super happy to be releasing this music to you guys today – the evolution of The Nth Power. Man, it brought up so many memories and just confirmed something that we already knew. We always give a thousand percent whenever we perform, write songs or put shows together, and we believe that it can be heard in these archived shows. So download the app, go to nugs.net and check it out. The Nth Power loves you.”

Their landing page, nugs.net/TheNthPower, offers a 30-day free trial offer for fans who want to listen to the newly released live volumes. Anyone already subscribed to nugs.net can login straight into the app and listen now. Highlights from today's launch include:

• November 2012 – The Nth Power’s first official gig ever at The Blue Nile while in New Orleans to record their EP, Basic Minimum Skills Test. You can hear the group working out some of their earliest versions of “Only You” and “Only Love."

• November 2014 – Their triumphant return to Bear Creek Music Festival at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park, where The Nth Power performed their first-ever festival set the previous year. The park's Amphitheatre Stage is sacred place for the band to perform, and this set showcases the band’s formidable "OG" touring lineup with Nigel Hall and Weedie Braimah.

• May 2016 – A murderous set from their time with new addition Courtney Smith as the band opened for Turkuaz for a string of shows that year. The set features a unique arrangement of “I Want You She So Heavy” by the Beatles.

• March 2018 – One of the group’s landmark tours as a trio. Early versions of “Joy” and “I Will Never Leave You” from their then-unreleased sophomore album, Reverence, are unveiled live from the Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, California.

• June 2018 – An abundance of special guests join The Nth Power for a very special Steely Dan tribute at Nectar's in Burlington, Vermont, including keyboardist Kofi Burbridge and a horns section comprised of trumpeter Jennifer Hartswick and saxophonists David Grippo and Brian McNamara.

• July 2021 – After a 18 months away from the stage, The Nth Power performs live for the first time since the start of the pandemic in this emotional, raw experience at Peachfest in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

The Nth Power also plans to release additional archives to the nugs.net platform in the coming weeks and months, including tribute sets from some of their most memorable ensemble performances to date. They will also drop regular live sets from the road as the band tours in support of their sophomore studio album, Reverence (released independently Sept. 29, 2021 and distributed by The Orchard), which is currently in consideration for the 2022 Grammy Awards nominations and garnered airplay from Sirius XM.

Tonight, celebrated drummer Nikki Glaspie returns to Late Night With Seth Meyers to begin her four-night residency behind the kit with the 8G Band Dec. 6-9. This marks Glaspie’s third in-studio appearance on the show, and she performs in support of her band The Nth Power’s new album, Reverence.

"I'm so happy to be back in studio this week with The 8G Band. What Eric Leiderman has created with these sit-ins is so cool and fun. It's an honor," Glaspie says.

Glaspie – who has toured the world and cut albums with Beyonce, Maceo Parker, Tim Reynolds and more – is among a long list of talented drummers to perform with Late Night’s house band, including Tim “Herb” Alexander (Primus), Abe Laboriel Jr (Paul McCartney), Glenn Kotche (Wilco) and Matt Cameron (Pearl Jam).

The accomplished performer and recording artist will be featured in the 2021 Modern Drummer Festival later this month, and actively tours with her bands The Nth Power, Punkadelick and KAMANI. Glaspie's talent, and explosive drumming style with The Nth Power, has garnered national praise from Relix, Okayplayer, Huffington Post, Curve, Consequence, Sirius XM and VH1.

The Berklee College of Music album burst into the national spotlight in 2006, when she began a five-year stint in Beyonce’s all-female backing band. Her credentials included artists like Chaka Kahn, Jay-Z and Kanye West and Destiny’s Child before she went on to form her own original band, The Nth Power, in 2012. To learn more about Glaspie's impressive career, watch an interview with Berklee HERE or view a docu-short HERE.

The Nth Power, which features guitarist Nick Cassarino (Big Daddy Kane) and bassist Nate Edgar (John Brown’s Body), is a genre-bending trio that uses element of jazz, soul and rhythm and blues to pay testament to the healing power of music. The group independently released their sophomore full-length studio album, Reverence, in September 2021. Distributed by The Orchard, the album features some of the final studio recordings of keyboardist Kofi Burbridge’s career, who passed away in 2019, and is dedicated to his memory. Other guests on the album include Maceo Parker, Cheryl Pepsii Riley, Ivan Neville, Nick Daniels III, Courtney Smith and Amy Bellamy.

On Wednesday, Dec. 22 at 10 a.m. PST, acclaimed singer and solo artist Elan Atias will release his new music video for “You Are Not Alone,” an anthem of empathy and hope inspired by the ongoing homelessness and mental health challenges in his hometown of Los Angeles.

The former lead singer of The Wailers, whose previous solo works have been featured on soundtracks for HBO’s Sex and the City and the hit movie 50 First Dates, released the heart-warming single Nov. 19 to tease his forthcoming 2022 EP.

LA Weekly named Atias’ new song one of their Top 10 Singles by Rising Artists in November, saying, “‘You Are Not Alone’ [is] becoming the top play on every listener’s playlist… If you are feeling down, you should listen to it. Once you do, you will always remember it in your hard times because it gives you courage.”

Filmed in Los Angeles County, the music video was directed by B. Earl and edited by Director of Photography Tyler Forrest. Scenic, heartfelt imagery evokes the ballad’s call to solidarity, which the Moroccan-American songwriter said applies to universal struggles currently facing our society.

"I specifically wrote this song addressing the homeless epidemic and the mental health crisis we have been experiencing in Los Angeles for the past 20-plus years. I also was influenced by a friend who was going through a break-up, and the fact that the pandemic has brought feelings of isolation, loneliness and despair to the forefront of many people's consciousness. The important thing about this song is that it can have many different meanings and everyone can relate to it in their own way," Atias said.

About Elan Atias

Elan Atias' comforting voice has been charming hearts and minds worldwide ever since the Wailers discovered his talent at age 21. Themes of amity, social responsibility, reverence and growth permeate Atias' career, and led the acclaimed singer to perform for former U.S. Presidents and cultural icons like Muhammad Ali.

His diverse studio collaborations include Gwen Stefani, Kenny Chesney, Snoop Dogg, Sly & Robbie and Carlos Santana, in addition to his own reggae chart-topping solo albums and songs featured on popular soundtracks for Sex and the City and 50 First Dates.

The Moroccan-American songwriter and vocalist returns to his Los Angeles roots with the new single “You Are Not Alone.” Released in November 2021, this gentle and uplifting anthem of hope addresses serious topics like homelessness and mental health as it preludes Atias’ forthcoming solo record – a call of solidarity wrapped in a cool island beat from one of our community's most genuine voices.

Acclaimed drummer Nikki Glaspie of The Nth Power will perform on Live with Kelly and Ryan with fellow Austin-based artist Max Frost today, Tuesday, June 7. Recorded live, the performance airs at 9am local time, nationally.

This marks Glaspie's return to national television following her week-long stint as a sit-in drummer on Late Night With Seth Meyers in December 2021 in support of The Nth Power's recent studio album, Reverence. Glaspie is one of the touring circuit's most respected talents, who's recorded with Beyonce and toured nationally with artists like Maceo Parker, Dumpstaphunk, GRiZ and countless others.

Glaspie is a longtime board member of the Harold Robinson Foundation, an LA-based charity that works to bring positive experiences to inner city kids. Acclaimed saxophonist and vocalist James Casey will make his solo recording debut with the release of a special holiday album, A Little Something For Everyone, on Monday, December 5th, via 12/23 Records.

Pressed on limited edition blue vinyl, the 7” EP offers a heartfelt Christmas collection from Casey that features two holiday staples, one funky original song and a beloved gospel hymn. Created in partnership with Nancy Langhorne Foundation, proceeds will benefit the Colorectal Cancer Alliance and Eastern Virginia Medical School’s HOPES Clinic to help provide free colon cancer screenings for the uninsured.

A multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer and producer based in New York City, Casey is widely known as the saxophone player and vocalist for Trey Anastasio Band. He’s recorded with Phish, toured with Meghan Trainor, performed on the Tonight Show with the Jonas Brothers and shared the stage with Dave Matthews Band, Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Billy Strings, among others.

Casey was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2021, which made this holiday EP project an extremely personal undertaking.

“When I was approached with the opportunity to record, I jumped at the chance,” Casey said. “Although we had a lot of setbacks while recording due to chemotherapy, being able to make a fun, holiday record with my friends to help people get access to screening for something that I am currently battling was a no-brainer. The fact that it’s the first music released under my own name is definitely an added bonus!”

Produced and arranged by Casey, A Little Something For Everyone was recorded at Creamery Studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, mixed by Jack Mason and Michael Coffman and mastered by Doug Krebs. The album features top New York session musicians including Randy Runyon (guitar), Ian Faquini (guitar), Matt Owens (trumpet), Steve Jenkins (bass), Corey Bernhard (keys) and Derrick White (horns), who arranged the album’s rendition of “Joy to the World.”

Vinyl production will be limited to 300 copies, with silk screened and numbered album jackets designed by Brooklyn based artist Nate Cepis. The album is available for pre-order on Nov. 7 at 1223Records.com, with vinyl shipping in mid-December. Singles from the EP will roll out on streaming services throughout November.

A Little Something For Everyone marks Casey’s first recording under his own name, and preludes his forthcoming solo EP Kauai, due to release in early 2023.

Track Listing:
1. Christmafunk
2. Christmas Time Is Here
3. Joy To The World
4. His Eye Is On The Sparrow

Acclaimed saxophonist and vocalist James Casey of Trey Anastasio Band has released a special Christmas album – A Little Something for Everyone – available on streaming services now via 12-23 Records. After the initial vinyl pressing sold out in under 12 hours and raised $6,000 for colon cancer charities, today Casey announces a second run of vinyl and limited-edition merch store to continue to support the colorectal cancer community, of which he is a member.

Created in partnership with Nancy Langhorne Foundation and recorded in between chemotherapy treatments, A Little Something for Everyone offers four songs of holiday joy across funk, jazz, R&B and gospel tributes, including Casey’s original track, “Christmafunk.” The EP also features a special instrumental saxophone version of “Joy To The World,” available exclusively on vinyl.

Vinyl copies of A Little Something for Everyone will be available for pre-order via 12-23 Records through Dec. 25 and will ship in 4-5 months due to production timelines. Meanwhile, Casey’s online merch store offers t-shirts, hoodies, beanies and pins available for purchase now to ship before the holidays. All proceeds from vinyl will be split between the HOPES Clinic and the Colorectal Cancer Alliance (CCA), with an additional 15 percent of all merchandise sales benefiting CCA.

Casey discovered his late-stage cancer diagnosis in July 2021 when he fell ill after a Red Rocks performance with Bill Kreutzmann’s Billy and the Kids ensemble. Emergency surgery days later removed a tumor in his colon, and Casey was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer at just age 38. While he kept the diagnosis private initially, Casey was inspired to use his platform to help others after learning that Black Americans are not only more likely to get colon cancer, but also more likely to suffer from early onset and late stage diagnoses, like himself. As part of the CCA’s #TheyDidntSay campaign, Casey seeks to raise awareness for colon cancer and change the narrative of how Black Americans discuss medical histories within their families.

“The thing about colon cancer, at least in the Black community, is that it’s hereditary and it hits us 20 percent more than anybody else. And once we get diagnosed, we have a 30 percent chance more of dying, which is really unfortunate,” Casey explained while speaking about his involvement with the #TheyDidntSay campaign during a recent interview with WNYC. “Had I known that I had cancer in my family, I would have gone to get checked before… If there’s cancer in your family, please let the people know so they can get tested and they won’t have to deal with this.”

A Little Something For Everyone marks Casey’s first recording under his own name. Recorded at The Creamery in Brooklyn, the album features top New York session musicians including Randy Runyon (guitar), Ian Faquini (guitar), Matt Owens (trumpet), Steve Jenkins (bass), Corey Bernhard (keys) and Derrick White (horns), who arranged the album’s rendition of “Joy to the World.”

While Casey has recorded on albums with many other artists, including Phish, Talib Kweli, Michael Kiwanuka, J. Cole, Lettuce and Chromeo, A Little Something for Everyone is the first music released under his own name. Following the holidays, Casey plans to release his first original EP, Kauai, in early spring 2023. For more information, visit jamescaseysax.com.

In anticipation of his forthcoming full-length solo debut, The Kaua’i Project, critically acclaimed saxophonist James Casey will release the album’s first single “New Bloom” on March 14, with its accompanying music video dropping March 21. The song and video share a message of manifesting positivity to overcome obstacles, and will both poignantly release during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

“New Bloom” is a remarkable example of music as medicine – encapsulating how Casey refused to let a stark colon cancer diagnosis prevent him from making his mark on the world. Wrapped in inspiration from a year of self discovery on a remote Hawaiian island, the song brings to light a mantra of soulful jazz, smooth beats and earnest emotion.

The music video for “New Bloom” was created with the support of Olympus Corporation of the Americas, a global medical technology leader. It tells a visual story of hope alongside fellow New York City creatives who are all living through – and beyond – cancer as a community. Directed by Brad Hasse, each person featured in the video is, today, persevering against cancer in their own intimate and personal ways.

No matter what problems come your way
You’ve got today
And no matter what happens today
You’ll be ok

Casey is an outspoken advocate for colon cancer awareness, especially among his more vulnerable Black community. He was a guest speaker at The Atlantic’s People V. Cancer summit as an ally with the Colorectal Cancer Alliance’s “They Didn’t Say” initiative, which is also in partnership with Olympus, along with Charlamagne Tha God. The campaign aims to start conversations about family history and colon cancer awareness among African Americans, who suffer higher mortality rates and are greater at risk for being diagnosed with late-stage disease at a younger age.

Casey first melded music and advocacy in 2022 when he released a holiday EP, A Little Something For Everyone, which garnered praise among NPR staff picks for the Best Songs of 2022. The album’s limited-edition vinyl pressings raised thousands of dollars for the cancer community via the Colorectal Cancer Alliance and the Nancy Langhorne Foundation.

Today, while undergoing regular chemotherapy treatments, Casey is preparing for the April-May 2023 roll out of his debut LP, The Kaua’i Project.

The Kaua’i Project developed over the past two years following a somewhat serendipitous sequence of events. Releasing his own music was never a priority for Casey, even as an accomplished multi-instrumentalist who tours the world with many top acts – most recently with members of the Grateful Dead and the Trey Anastasio Band. That perception changed abruptly when he was diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer at just 38 years of age. This shocking news in August 2021 served as an awakening in so many ways. Casey decided to make the most of his time – both for himself and for others. He let go of all limits to his musical career and, for the first time, began writing and recording music under his own name.

Musician James Casey, 40, died on Monday, August 28, 2023 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York following a two-year battle with colon cancer.

Casey was an accomplished saxophonist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, musical director, and colorectal cancer awareness advocate. He was a solo artist, longtime member of the Trey Anastasio Band and beloved regular guest with Grateful Dead ensembles Billy and the Kids and Phil Lesh and Friends. Additionally, Casey was a prominent ally with the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, the leading national nonprofit organization for colon cancer, which has created a memorial fundraiser in his name to help save lives and end this disease.

A statement shared on Casey's social media reads, "It is with profound grief and a broken heart that we confirm the passing of James Casey. He died peacefully in the early morning of August 28, 2023, surrounded by his wife and family. James persevered through his colon cancer battle for two years, and it was the honor of his career to release solo music and perform during that time. James brought joy to everyone around him and his legacy will live on, both through his music and the advocacy work that’s become so integral to him. It was so important to James to help others avoid his fate – to learn the importance of early colon cancer screenings, know your family history, and be an advocate for your own health. When detected early, colon cancer is almost always curable. He shared his diagnosis publicly and illuminated his ongoing battle to raise awareness and help others. James was a remarkable human being, beloved for his wit, humility, kindness and generosity. He will be dearly missed."

Born in metro Washington, D.C. and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Casey grew up in a musical family. He started playing drums at age 3 and by 9 he had already discovered his love of the saxophone. After graduating from Desert Vista High School, his passion led him to pursue a degree in music business at Berklee College of Music in Boston. There, Casey made lifelong bonds of friendship with fellow students and musicians such as Igmar Thomas, Louis Cato and Eric Krasno, performing at Wally's jazz club before he made the jump to become a full-time musician in New York City. A serendipitous 2012 sit-in with Krasno's band Soulive at Brooklyn Bowl introduced Casey to trumpeter Jennifer Hartswick, who became the catalyst for him to join the notable Trey Anastasio Band horn section of Casey, Hartswick and Natalie Cressman.

Following a performance at Red Rocks with Bill Kreutzmann, Casey was diagnosed with Stage III colorectal cancer in August 2021 at just 38 years old – well under the recommended age of 45 for first-time colonoscopy screenings. Despite undergoing surgery to remove a tumor and enduring rigorous chemotherapy, Casey stayed devoted to his music and continued to perform. Furthermore, he went public with his diagnosis in the hopes of bringing awareness to a disease that is increasingly affecting young people at alarming rates.

Unfortunately, Black Americans are 30% more likely to develop young-onset colorectal cancer, and one in four is diagnosed in the later stages. In addition, the Black community has the second-highest mortality and incidence rates in the U.S., and is 35% more likely to die from the disease. Casey appeared on the Today Show in March 2023 to share his story and discuss the importance of knowing your family history and getting tested early. To learn more about James Casey's cancer battle and advocacy efforts, watch "Music as Medicine: a James Casey story."

As Casey's cancer progressed to Stage IV despite chemotherapy treatments, he was inspired to finally record and release music under his own name. In November 2022, he announced his first solo work, a holiday EP titled A Little Something For Everyone, which garnered praise among NPR staff picks for the Best Songs of 2022. The album’s limited-edition vinyl pressings raised thousands of dollars for the cancer community via the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, the Nancy Langhorne Foundation and the Eastern Virginia Medical School's HOPES Clinic to fund colon cancer screenings for the uninsured.

Casey continued to record and release music prior to his passing. In March 2023, he dropped "New Bloom," his first true single as a solo artist in what he hoped would be part of his debut album, The Kaua'i Project. Inspired by a year of self discovery on a remote Hawaiian island during the pandemic, the soulful jazz tune's lyrics reflect Casey's personal mantra throughout his colon cancer battle – "No matter what problems come your way, you've got today. And no matter what happens today, you'll be okay." In the months that followed, and with nothing promised for the future, Casey dripped out two more singles, "E.J.B.M." and "Outside," as he was able.

Casey's numerous other contributions to the music community include collaborations with renowned artists. Recording credits include J. Cole, Talib Kweli, Jesse McCartney, Sabrina Claudio, Phish, Michael Kiwanuka, Melody Gardot, Chromeo, Danger Mouse/Karen O, Nigel Hall, Lettuce, The Shadowboxers and Brady Watt. He performed with Meghan Trainor, Dave Matthews Band, Jonas Brothers, Lauren Hill, Wu-Tang, The Roots, John Legend, Anderson .Paak, Maceo Parker, Carly Rae Jepsen, Leslie Odom Jr., Roy Hargrove, Shawn Mendes, 5th Harmony and countless others. Other solo projects include his band Animus Rexx and his virtual concert company, AuxChord.

Casey persevered through chemotherapy treatments and continued to perform in spring 2023 with Phil Lesh and Friends, Billy and the Kids, Trey Anastasio Band and Busta Rhymes as he was able – which, following a second abdominal surgery in May 2023, would become a single and poignant encore appearance. Casey took the stage for the last time with Phil Lesh & Friends at the Westville Music Bowl in New Haven, Connecticut on July 23, 2023.

On August 16, 2023, Casey announced that he was hospitalized and no longer able to perform due to his deteriorating health. A GoFundMe fundraiser was established to assist with his mounting medical and living expenses, which incredibly reached more than $150,000 in 24 hours.

Casey is survived by his wife Ayla Cobb Casey, mother Gina Casey, father Duane Casey, sister Rachel Cato and brother Stephen Casey. Memorial services will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Colorectal Cancer Alliance.

"It was important to James to spread awareness about knowing your family history, the significance of early screening, and being an advocate for your own health," says Michael Sapienza, CEO of the Colorectal Cancer Alliance. "Colorectal cancer is highly treatable when caught early. The Alliance is committed to continuing James' advocacy efforts, spreading these messages, and addressing equity and access in healthcare, with a focus on the Black community."

Brooklyn Bowl in Williamsburg will host a special memorial concert Monday, Nov. 6 to honor the life and music of late saxophonist James Casey, who passed away in August at age 40 following a two-year battle with colon cancer.

Rather than a traditional memorial service, Casey wanted his loved ones to throw a party. About James Casey:

Born in metro Washington, D.C. and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Casey grew up in a musical family. His passion for music led him to pursue a degree in music business at Berklee College of Music in Boston. There, Casey made lifelong bonds of friendship with fellow students and musicians such as Igmar Thomas, Cato and Eric Krasno, performing at Wally's jazz club before he made the jump to become a full-time musician in New York City. A serendipitous 2012 sit-in with Krasno's band Soulive at Brooklyn Bowl introduced Casey to trumpeter Jennifer Hartswick, who became the catalyst for him to join the notable Trey Anastasio Band horn section, comprised of Casey, Hartswick and Natalie Cressman. He became an in-demand session player and toured the world many times over with many different artists. When not on the road, Casey dedicated time in the studio as a producer and performed with his own band, Animus Rexx.

Following a 2021 performance at Red Rocks with Bill Kreutzmann, he was diagnosed with Stage III colorectal cancer at just 38 years old – well under the recommended age of 45 for first-time colonoscopy screenings. After surgery and rigorous chemotherapy, Casey stayed devoted to his music and continued to perform. Furthermore, he went public with his cancer diagnosis in the hopes of bringing awareness to a disease that is increasingly affecting young people at alarming rates.

As Casey's cancer progressed, he was inspired to finally record and release music under his own name. In November 2022, he announced his first solo work, a holiday EP titled A Little Something For Everyone, which garnered praise among NPR staff picks for the Best Songs of 2022 and raised thousands of dollars for the cancer community. In March 2023, he dropped "New Bloom," his standout single as a solo artist on his forthcoming album, The Kaua'i Project. In the months that followed, and with nothing promised for the future, Casey dripped out two more singles, "E.J.B.M." and "Outside," as he was able.

Following Casey's passing on August 28, 2023, musicians and friends shared words of reverence for Casey's elegant play, kind personality and enduring spirit. He was also honored by the Colorectal Cancer Alliance with the creation of the James Casey Memorial Fund to raise money and awareness for colon cancer prevention.
