Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, not only are they full of funk and spunk, but they are also one of the fastest growing Jam Bands today. Promoting their new album “Pizazz”, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong kicked off their rather large tour at the Boulder Theater last night, October 6th. All of their fans, or as they like to call, their “Flock”, migrated into the theater for what they didn’t know was going to be one epic dance party.

Greg Ormont | Pigeons Playing Ping Pong

Pigeons opened up with an older song of theirs, “Pop Off”, and then into the best version of “Zydeko” I personally have ever seen. Mid song, they burst into an epic jam that had every single person moving their feet to the music. Special guest, Casey Russell from Magic Beans, came on stage for a special version of “F.U.N.K”. His keyboarding skills brought in extra depth to the song, and they clearly had a great time jamming out together. Casey was not the only special guest though. “The Flock” was overcome with emotion when percussionist Chuck Morris from the band Lotus decided to grace the stage for nearly an entire set. Playing songs such as Princes’ “1999” and “Penguins”, his addition to the stage put a fun twist on some old favorites. During the song “Upfunk”, Chuck Morris and Pigeons drummer Alex Petropulos shared a legendary drum solo that had the crowd going wild.

Also, what’s a show without lights? Lighting Director, Manny Newman really pulled out the big guns last night with stunning visuals and lighting effects that engulfed the entire theater. His eye for color and in depth knowledge of their music really put that final touch to a perfect show. Wrapping up their second set, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong played “Time to Ride”. Of course, this left the crowd wanting more, but they headed off the stage.

Jeremy Schon | Pigeons Playing Ping Pong

As the crowd roared for an encore, they finally came out to play their final song. “Horizons”, one of their most loved songs, closed out the night leaving the crowd on cloud 9. They really left it all on the stage here in Boulder, Colorado, and we all look forward to their return and wish them the best on the rest of their tour. “Pizazz” comes out October 20th, so keep an eye out for some new tunes from one of your favorite funkiest bands!

“Epic Psychedelic Funky Jams”. The only four words to sum up the high-octane sounds of the Supernatural Beings shows this weekend at Be On Key Psychedelic Ripple in Denver.  February 23rd and 24th, four extraordinarily talented artists joined together to create one super band. SuperNatural Beings, originated by Shred is Dead guitarist, Marcus Rezak, is composed of members from several bands in the jam community.  This time around, we were graced with the presence of keyboardist Joel Cummins and drummer Kris Myers of Umphrey’s McGee. More artists include guitarist Marcus Rezak, and last but not least, Ashish Vyas of Thievery Corporation on bass.

Be On Key

Night one started with a flooded bar full of energetic fans.  From the moment the members walked on stage, I knew we were in for something special. The chemistry between the artists was undeniable.  With no setlist in their plan, the artists vibed off each other's energies to create one beautiful psychedelic sound.

Ashish Vyas | Denver, CO

Seeing artists doing improvisational music always blows me away.  Especially when it's a group of people who do not typically play together.  Watching their clear communication on stage as they switch from riff to solos and back to more jams was hypnotizing.

Supernatural Beings | Denver, CO

On night two, which was more crowded than night one, the fans did not hold back their killer dance moves as the band played some progressively funkier music throughout the night. I believe what took everyone by surprise was when the group busted into "Glory", one of my personal favorite Umphrey's McGee songs.  I heard over and over again in the crowd "This is one of the best versions of Glory I have ever heard." I must say, I have to agree! Rezak took shape of Jake Cinninger for a while. He nailed every part of that song, making Joel and Kris proud, I'm sure.

It was a real treat for Umphrey's Fans, that is for certain.

Nicholas Gerlach | Be On Key Psychedelic Ripple

The second set of night two, they brought in a special guest Nicholas Gerlach of Pretty Fantastics. He left it all on the stage with his accompaniment on the saxophone, as well as some funky solos.

Marcus Rezak & Ashish Vyas | Be On Key Psychedelic Ripple

It is crazy to think that those two shows are the only of their kind.  Those who were there definitely felt incredibly lucky to be witnessing these specific artists playing together. It was an unforgettable two nights, and I speak for everyone when I ask... when is the next SuperNatural Beings show?

Kris Myers | Denver, CO

About two years ago, I heard my first BIG Something song. It was an unforgettable moment when the song “Undertow” played on the radio station “Jam On,” on Sirius XM. I remember thinking they were going to become something big. From then on, my obsession with this unique funk, rock, jam group grew tremendously.

Nick MacDaniels | BIG Something | Denver, CO

BIG Something is a 6-member band from Burlington, North Carolina. A powerhouse of sound with exotic instruments and a unique blend of sounds and genres. Members of the group consisting of Nick MacDaniels, playing guitar and also lead vocals. Doug Marshall, a laid-back bass player who packs a big punch of sound. Josh Kagel, playing not only Keys but also Trumpet. Casey Cranford who also plays not only Saxophone but also EWI. On drums, we have the talented Ben Vinograd. Last, but certainly not least, Jesse Hensley on lead guitar. Jesse threw down some incredible guitar solos had the crowd locked into every note... The unique talent of this group is never-ending as they show off their multi-talented musical abilities on stage.

Bluebird Theater | Denver, CO | 3/29/18

On Thursday, March 29th, BIG Something took the stage by storm at the Bluebird Theater in Denver, Colorado. The lines were long, and the fans were anxiously hustled into the venue. The euphoric musical energy that BIG Something projects made for one of the best crowds I have ever been around.

Josh Kagel & Casey Cranford | BIG Something | Denver, CO

Being my first BIG Something show, I was taken back as most of the crowd knew every word to each song. It truly was a dance party and a sing-along to every song they performed. The band opened up with a classic crowd favorite of theirs, “A Simple Vision.” Following that, they went into my favorite song, “Song for Us.” Performing hit after hit, they then managed to break into an impressive Talking Heads cover of “LIfe During Wartime.” Despite the song’s lyrics, the show was a party, a disco, and they certainly were fooling around. Swapping instruments, jumping around the stage, and pumping up the crowd with mind-blowing solos. There was not a dull moment in this entire show.

BIG Something | Bluebird Theater | Denver, CO | March 29th, 2018

Special guest performance on dual keys with Josh Kagel was Rhett Huffman. His chemistry with the band was undeniable, as he has sat in with the band several times in the past.

Gavin Hamilton sitting in with BIG Something | Denver, CO

The band ended their show with yet another special guest. From their opening band, “Funk You,” Gavin Hamilton came on stage singing a cover of “Sing a Simple Song” by Sly & The Family Stone. Following that, ending it with yet another hit song of theirs “Megalodon.”

Jesse Hensley | BIG Something

After attending this show, it would be no surprise for me to see them headlining a Red Rocks show in the near future. If you have not given them a listen yet, I certainly recommend it, as their reputation soon will be something big.

BIG Something is a 6-piece jam band who has been taking the jam scene by storm. Saturday, April 14th, BIG Something took the stage at a Hodi’s Half Note in Fort Collins, Colorado. The night started off as excited fans strolled into the bar. Not only for Big Something, but big fans of the opening bands as well. I personally never heard of these bands before that night, but I was blown away. Vintage Pistol and Diego’s Umbrella pumped the crowd full of energy with their unique sound and contagious positive energy. Diego’s Umbrella in particular was so connected with their crowd they even came onto the dance floor for a few songs. There was some serious dancing and singing during both opener sets.

Diego's Umbrella | Hodi's Half Note

Once it was time for BIG Something to come on, the crowd moved up. Everyone was inching forward to get as close to the front row as possible. I do not blame them. Watching Big Something perform, especially up close, is mesmerizing. Their chemistry on stage is undeniable and they play such incredibly complex music, all with the biggest smiles on their faces the entire time. They clearly love every bit of what they do, and it shows. I could watch Casey Cranford play the EWI all day. It is such a fascinating instrument. Casey had several impressive solos throughout the night. His talent to be able to switch from Saxophone to EWI and then back again in just seconds is extremely mind-blowing to see.

Casey Cranford | BIG Something

BIG Something opened up their show with Tumbleweed. Being a big hit off their last album, the fans were singing along to every word. Following Tumbleweed was Sundown Nomad, Amanda Lynn, and Saturday Night Zombie. All songs that of course had everyone moving their feet to the beat. Big Something did manage to give the crowd an amazing sneak preview into their new album. The song Plug had amazing lyrics and stuck to their unique blend of sound. After amping the crowd up with a new tune, they tapped into their inner Talking Heads and played a cover of “Burning Down the House”. Easily, the best cover of that song I have ever heard. I am an avid Talking Heads listener, and even I was truly impressed.

Jesse Hensley | Big Something

They ended their show playing Love Generator and The Curse of Julia Brown. They encored with a cover of Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel. Of course, they end on a perfect song to sing along to. I absolutely love the energy they create at shows.

BIG Something’s new album “The Otherside” releases Friday, April 20th. Pre-order is on sale now. For information on pre-ordering their album, or just seeing if their playing a show near you soon, go to BIGSomething.net.  In my opinion they are “The top must-see” band in 2018.

Aqueous is an improvisational groove rock 4-piece powerhouse band from Buffalo, New York.  Grateful Web got the opportunity to sit down with Mike Gantzer of Aqueous to discuss the band, future albums, their summer/fall tour, and debut performance at Denver's Bluebird coming up on June 9th.

GW: Hey everyone! I am here with Guitarist and Vocalist of Aqueous, Mike Gantzer. How are you doing today?

MG: I'm doing great! How are you doing?

GW: Pretty great myself. So, I read somewhere that you began playing guitar around age 11. Is that right?

MG: Yes, I think it was somewhere around there: 11 or 12. I was naturally drawn to it. You know, my dad had one kind of lying around the house. It was funny because I had played trumpet in more of a traditional jazz band style growing up but really was not taken with it too much. I just didn't really like the structure of it, and it just was not super fun for me. I started feeling around with the guitar at my house when I was a kid with my Dad. I just connected with it right away. I used to sit with the guitar on my lap and use a penny and go up and down the strings. It was this whole fun time of my life discovering this instrument, and I just connected with it. I kind of dropped all of my other hobbies and dove head first into playing guitar.

Mike Gantzer

GW: That's amazing. Very impressive. Who would you say your biggest musical influences are that made you who you are today?

MG: I'd probably have to say one of the biggest ones would have to be Pink Floyd. I think that their music just really spoke to me on an emotional level. Even in an artistic and theatrical level, everything that they did really resonate with me. It was powerful, emotional and purposeful.  David Gilmour, the guitarist, is one of my favorites because one of the lessons I learned is that it's not always about speed and technicality. It's just more about finding the right notes and trying to get through to somebody with that. Saying more with less, I suppose. I think that's probably one of the biggest ones.

GW: Aqueous has such a unique blend of sound. You guys can get away with playing any genre across the board. I wonder who were some of Aqueous' biggest musical influences? Would you think Pink Floyd falls into that category?

Aqueous | Boulder Theater

MG: Yeah. I think that when we were young, that was probably the first bands that really brought us together. I think we all had a common interest with that group, so we would start to learn their songs and dissect their music. I remember being 15 or 16 and the other guitarist, Dave, and I were discovering vocal harmonies by singing Pink Floyd’s “Echoes” and just having our minds blown. It was so exciting, and it's funny because, over the years, there has been so much from this Classic Rock genre. [There were] bands like Supertramp, or, of course, The Beatles. Steely Dan and even the side projects The Beatles did like George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Wings. All that. They were, of course, big influences. Then we went through a period where we were all obviously really into jam music. For a lot of the structure of our band was from seeing other bands like Phish, Moe., and bands of that nature. Then, of course, we all really love the band Lettuce. More funky, almost hip-hop style with groove. It's really interesting, all of us are super into hip-hop. I love Kendrick Lamar, Nas, Beastie Boys and MF Doom. We also have a big cornerstone of music with the 90's. Influenced by 90's alt-rock and 90's pop-rock. Ween was a huge band for me. Also, bands like Incubus, Cake, and The Violent Femmes. I feel like we love everything. Recently, I've been on a folk kick: Fleet Foxes, Wilco, Simon and Garfunkel and John Mayer. Everything and anything you can imagine. We're like sponges open to whatever resonates with us.

GW: There are so many great bands you just named there. So, in 2017, you guys released your new single Weight of the Word, which is a beautiful song with great lyrics. I happen to wonder, do you guys all write for the band? Also, what inspired this song?

Aqueous | Boulder, Colorado

MG: Absolutely! I'm glad that you asked it that way because actually our bassist player, Evan, wrote that. I mean, we certainly, especially with the music side of it, all really collaborate. He had a few just ideas, like a section, some of the chords for the intro he had, and then he had some of these grooves. I then added something to the chorus, and he had the whole end section. So, the four of us will get together and work out whatever pieces feel best. He wrote those lyrics, too. I think that the general content seen is just about expressing a feeling of frustration and almost hopelessness about continuing to read the news every day and not being sure how to respond or how to help.  We try to not be specific with political messages, and on that particular one, it was us trying to express that feeling of “what now?”. Things are getting crazier and crazier, so I think there was a lot of emotion in that tune. It's interesting. We were listening to a lot of Steely Dan at the time and took some production cue in terms of mixing it and graphing it, so we had a lot going on there. I am very glad that you like it.

GW:  So with this NEW single, does this mean we can expect a new album from Aqueous in the near future?

Mike Gantzer | Aqueous

MG: In the very near future, honestly. I’d probably say within the next month and a half you will start seeing singles being dropped from the new album. We're really excited because we've been working on it for over a year between touring. It's like one of the first times we ever recorded an entire album mainly [consisting of] brand new songs no one has ever heard. Songs that never have been played out that we held to our chest. Bringing brand new completed songs to our tour fanbase is something we had always dreamed about and that we've never really been able to execute out before. Trying to work with new material and have everything be fresh all the time. Finally, we were able to get to the point where we have been a band long enough that we can dive into our catalog for touring and play everything and jam on everything and integrate new covers. All while working and chipping away at this new album. We’re all really psyched about how it came out. We spent a lot of our time working on the production aspect of it and making sure the sounds are exactly right. The songs themselves this time have a real emotion to them. A lot of them are expressing really personal and honest situations and circumstances we have had in our personal lives. All kinds of things in the spectrum of life, and there was a lot covered here. So yeah, it is really soon on that you’ll start seeing and hearing a lot about what it will be called and singles coming out and such, but we’re very excited.

GW: That’s really exciting to hear. I actually remember my first time seeing Aqueous. 2013 Summer Camp Music Festival. I got pulled away from my campsite because needed to know who this incredible band was. I feel like when I look at festival lineups now, your name is moving higher up towards the headliners. How does it feel to know your band is rapidly growing in popularity over the last 5 or so years?

Mike Gantzer | Aqueous

MG: Its one of the best feelings. It’s very exciting. We’re just grateful and its awesome for us to connect with all these new people, and have our music resonate with people. That was our first Summer Camp, and I remember it was pretty cold and rainy and I think that we played at the Campfire stage around 11:00 AM on Sunday.  It was awesome to build our sets over the years and, like you said, kind of move up the line up a little bit and get our opportunities for set times and branch out. Example: last Summer Camp we did a Green Day set with the guys from Umphrey's McGee and actually ended up playing three times that year. I think Summer Camp feels the most like home for us. It’s where we seem to connect most with our fans. Midwesterners just seem to get our music really well, and we just love it.

GW: Now you guys actually played Bohemian Rhapsody at that Summer Camp. I’ve also seen Dr. Dre covers, Elton John, and so many other different genres. You guys really can do anything. Is there a specific cover you play that you love the most or means the most to you?

MG: Great Question. We have played Slayer covers. We recently did a Gorillaz set which was really fun. It feels incredible to be able to dig into the songs, and playing covers is really fun. I would have to say for me, Shine on you Crazy Diamond would be the most meaningful. A few years ago my Dad actually passed away, and it was a song that we really bonded over. He introduced me to Pink Floyd, and it really hits me deep and means a lot to me when we play it.

Mike Gantzer

GW: Now, with the Summer/ Fall tour underway, are there any shows or festivals you’re most looking forward to?

MG: A lot of them, actually. Summer Camp Music Festival this week definitely. We are playing two sets at 2:00 AM. It’s all about the energy. We are actually playing both weekends at Electric Forest. We are really excited about that. We’re playing the Bluebird Theater in Denver soon: June 9th. There are so many more. We’re really excited!

GW: That’s amazing! Well, thank you for spending your time with us. I really look forward to the new album, and good luck on your tour!

MG: Thanks, Melissa!

Kicking off their “Stay Human” tour,  Michael Franti & Spearhead had a soul shining performance at Red Rocks Amphitheater on June 1st.   The evening started off with Franti leading a yoga jam session at Red Rocks. Taking in all the beautiful views of Colorado, this put out some great vibes for the beautiful Colorado night.

Red Rocks Amphitheatre | Morrison, CO

First opener, Victoria Canal, is touring with Michael Franti & Spearhead all of June and July. She is a world traveler who performs benefit concerts for causes such as SERV, AIS, and t-oigo. Her piano playing skills and voice are stunning. She even came on stage to sing with the band during the end of their performance. The crowd’s phones were illuminating the night sky as they sand in breathtaking harmonies.

Xavier Rudd | Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Xavier Rudd came in strong with his full band ready to rock. Rudd let it all out by showing off his several musical talents. People who did not know his music in the crowd were amazed at his talent. His performances playing the Didgeridoo are always a favorite. His performances are jaw-dropping, and I can never manage to figure out how he can multitask so many instruments at once.

Xavier Rudd | Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Michael Franti & Spearhead started with a compelling video on the big screen. Promoting love, equality, and acceptance, it was a beautiful piece about their message and where their musical inspiration stems from.  They had a few fans dancing on stage as they played the song “Once A Day.” I have never seen so much love in one space. I was engulfed in a sea of love. It was heartwarming watching couples, families, friends, and even strangers hugging and kissing each other during this song.

Michael Franti introduces some wonderful young singers to the stage

This show was full of surprises. Two young girls got to sing on stage with the band. It was a very family friendly crowd, so watching all these young souls listen to the positive words of his music was a beautiful thing to witness. Franti also always manages to make himself part of the crowd. Climbing around the audience from the front row to deep into Red Rocks, Franti managed to make everyone feel at home and included.  He knows exactly how to captivate an audience with just the power of love.

Michael Franti & Spearhead | Red Rocks Amphitheatre

I have to say my favorite part of the show was when the band brought all their instruments to the center of the crowd and performed a few songs there. It felt like magic. One second, they were on the stage, and the next they were in the center of everyone jamming out! Beach balls flying around, and sing-a-longs, it was such a blast. The energy was beautiful. Watching the sunset in Colorado, looking at all the smiling faces in the crowd, and listening to such a powerful, beautiful message in the music made for a perfect night.

Michael Franti | Morrison, CO

Michael Franti is set to have a new album released this month titled Stay Human 2. Titled after his 2010 album Stay Human, this album with also be the soundtrack to Franti’s soon to come self-directed documentary called “Stay Human.”

Formed in Buffalo, New York, Aqueous has been pushing the limits of the jam world since 2006.  Lucky for Denver, Aqueous hosted a sold-out show at the historic Bluebird Theater on June 9th.

Evanoff | Bluebird Theater

Opening for Aqueous was Colorado based band, Evanoff. With only three members, this band packs a punch of sound with irresistible melodies that make your body move. Described as “dream rock”, their melodic beats are unique. I have to say the song that won me over was their rendition of “Another Brick in the Wall” by Pink Floyd. They put an even more psychedelic twist on the song with their unique electronic rock sound.

Aqueous kicked off their show performing the Super Mario Bros. theme song which soon transformed into their hit song “Second Sight”.

Bluebird Theater | Denver, CO

The first set continued on this upbeat path with several original hit songs such as “They’re Calling For Ya”, “Random Company” and “Don’t Do It.” In addition to an incredibly psychedelic cover of “DARE” by the Gorillaz.

Aqueous | Bluebird Theater

Ready to perform their second set, Aqueous came out and played “The Median”, “20/20”, and my personal favorite song “Complex Pt. II”. The crowd was pumped up ready for a long night of dancing. Playing until curfew, Aqueous closed out their show with the Pink Floyd cover, “Fearless”. As well as their two songs “Aldehyde” and “Triangle”.  Overall amazing two sets highlighting their improvisational talent. This is the must-see band this summer.

With a new album underway we are excited to see what the future holds for this powerhouse quartet.

June 15th at the Fox Theater, two incredible tribute bands took the stage. Pink Talking Fish and Dead Floyd rocked the stage by bringing back old classics by Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, Phish, and Talking Heads.

Pink Talking Fish | Boulder, CO

Pink Talking Fish blew the crowd away with an unforgettable one set show. Starting off with “Frankenstein”, traditionally sung by Phish, the crowd was immediately hooked. Soon after came Talking Heads song “Life During Wartime”.  This bands energy was contagious and had every single person in the crowd dancing and singing.

Eric Gould | Pink Talking Fish

Following that fun dance party, Pink Talking Fish went into the song “Breathe” by Pink Floyd. It was so amazing being surrounded by a crowd that can sing every single word to these songs. The soft melodies of Breathe combined with the sound of the crowd singing along gave me chills.

Pink Talking Fish | Boulder, CO

The band then decided to pump up the energy with some more amazing covers such as “Scent Of A Mule” and “Psycho Killer”. Soon after, the band did a wild mashup of “Wish You Were Here” and David Bowie’s “Space Oddity”. Blending the two songs flawlessly, Pink Talking Fish once again proved their talent in recreating classics and making it their own. Special Guests Charlie Humphreys and Matt Goldberg from Dead Floyd joined Pink Talking Fish to cover Phish’s song “Sand” as well as “Comfortably Numb” by Pink Floyd.

Pink Talking Fish | Boulder, CO

Finishing up the night, Pink Talking Fish performed “Once In A Lifetime” and “Run Like An Antelope” and encored with “Loving Cup”. Overall an incredible night full of energy and dancing.

Our favorite funk jam group Pigeons Playing Ping Pong flew on over to the Boulder Theater this past weekend. October 18th and 19th marked another two night run in Boulder, Colorado.

Cycles | Boulder Theater

Opening for Pigeons was local Colorado band, Cycles. This 3 piece power-house blends several genres’ of music into one cohesive sound. Guitarist, Patrick Harvey, is flawless with speed and precision. Michael Wood takes the stage with his high energy and unique drumming techniques. Finally, bassist Jimmy Herring. With enough energy to fill a stage on his own, this artist uses a loop pedal and amazing bass slapping techniques that really gives this band that special something. Influenced by bands such as Primus, and Rage Against the Machine, they are not afraid to experiment with sound.

Greg Ormont | PPPP

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong took the stage for the 2nd night of their two night run and filled the room with their fun upbeat energy instantly. With the crowd roaring and anticipation building, Pigeons burst into their first jam of the night. Classic tune, Penguins, was their first song of the night. This dance party kept going as Pigeons jumped into their new song Somethin’ For Ya. Keeping the energy pumping, Time to Ride, my personal favorite amped up the crowd. Other hits such as Totally, Doc, and Skipjack led into an epic cover. Just when I thought their show could not get any better, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong burst into Lion King classic hit, Hakuna Matata. Singing along, the crowds energy was full of happiness and laughter. They truly put an amazing spin on such a classic song. Closing out their first set, Pigeons jumped into Moonwalk, Julia, and Beanstalk.

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong | Boulder, Colorado

Second set was bound to keep the energy pumping.  The band played songs such as Too Long, Poseidon, King Kong, and Horizon. Other songs of the set included Overrun, Sunny Day, and closing out the show was all time crowd favorite, Fun in Funk.

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong | Boulder Theater

Encoring with their song Walk Outside, the crowd felt bittersweet as another two night run came to an end. With such amazing energy and talent, Colorado can’t wait to have them back for their Red Rocks show May 2nd.

On June 15th, Lettuce grooved on into Morrison, Colorado for their 4th annual “Rage on the Rocks” show at Red Rocks Amphitheater.

The Soul Rebels | Morrison, CO

The Soul Rebels started off the evening with an energy packed set full of all the vibes needed to set the mood for a fantastic night.

Matt Jalbert | TAUK

One of my absolute favorite jam bands taking over the scene right now, TAUK, came in hot with top favorite hits that had everyone on their feet. TAUK brought in two special guests to close out their set. Nick Gerlach on Saxophone and John Grey on Trumpet came on for an amazing “Pitter Pattern” from their newest album Shiftshaper II: Outbreak. Closing the set with Drummer, Issac Teel, on vocals, the band and guests covered the amazing Stevie Wonder's “Higher Ground.”

TAUK | Red Rocks Amphitheatre

With both openers leaving the crowd with incredibly uplighting energy, it was finally time for Lettuce to take the stage for the first set of the night.

Melvin Seals | Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Now, Let us not forget Lettuce's 2018 Lockn’ Music Festival Jerry Garcia Band set. Due to the overwhelming amount of hype and love that set received, Lettuce figured to give the people what they want and reprise that set at their Rage Rocks show. Clearly, an already amazing set, but just to amp it up, even more, they added the addition of legendary keyboardist Melvin Seals. Melvin Seals, long time Jerry Garcia Band member and what we all know as a pioneer to jam band music as we know it. His happy attitude made us all smile, and his charisma and chemistry with Lettuce was a perfect fit.

Lettuce with Melvin Seals | Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Lettuce delivered a wide variety of JGB favorites by kicking it off with “Finders Keepers.” Following were other loved tunes such as “How Sweet It Is,” “After Midnight,” and “Tangled Up In Blue.”

Red Rocks Amphitheatre | Morrison, CO

My breath was taken away when they closed out the set with two amazing covers of “They Love Each Other” and “Cats Under The Stars” Vocals by Nigel Hall, and Erik Coomes were on point, and this was a perfect way to end a perfect JGB set.

Lettuce | Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Lettuce opened their second set with new song “Trapezoid” from their 2019 album “Elevate.” Followed by other tunes on their new album “Krewe,” “Royal Highness,” ‘Everybody Wants to Rule The World,” “Ready to Live,” and “Purple Cabbage” The crowd really got to enjoy the new funky tunes Lettuce has recently released.

Lettuce | Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Closing out the night was an incredible crowd favorite “Phyllis” and the classic song “Squadlive.” Encored with “The Force,” they left everyone satisfied and amped up. You can tell everyone is already counting down the days until the next Rage Rocks 2020.

Last weekend, Claypool Lennon Delirium took their band to Colorado for a 3-night run. On Sunday, August 18th, they took the Boulder Theater stage for an unbelievable show.

Uni | Boulder Theater

Opening for Claypool Lennon Delirium was New York-based band “Uni.” This glam rock trio captured the crowd's attention immediately with their unique blend of sounds and wild stage presence — a must-see band.

Sean Lennon | Boulder Theater

Claypool Lennon Delirium took the stage with dimmed lights as the sounds of “There’s No Underwater in Space” trickled in as the sound took over the theater louder and louder. They walk on, and the crowd roared with excitement. I always love a Claypool crowd. Everyone always knows how to bring amazing energy to every show.

Claypool Lennon Delirium | Boulder, CO

The band started their performance playing “Little Fishes” which led into an epic “The Court of the Crimson King.” The crowd was mesmerized as Claypool and Lennon both broke into “Easily Charmed by Fools” followed by another crowd favorite “Breath of a Salesman.”

Sean Lennon | Boulder Theater

This one set show summed up with a lineup of a fantastic song after the next. “Cricket and the Genie Movements 1 & 2”. This already had the crowd speechless and begging for more. They powerfully delivered with an incredible rendition of The Beatles “Tomorrow Never Knows” followed by Pink Floyd’s “Astronomy Domine.”  Finishing it off with the encore “Cosmic Highway” and that, my friends, was a perfect show.

Claypool Lennon Delirium | Boulder Theater

I could not have asked for more. Claypool and Lennon closed out their Colorado run with a bang and left everyone happy and ready to see what the band does next!

On September 21st, Thumpasaurus took the stage at the beloved Bluebird Theater located in the heart of Denver, Colorado. Thumpasaurus is an eccentric funk band with a hint of punk that is composed of five members. Members include, Henry Was on drums, Paul Cornish on keys, Lucas Tameran on vocals and guitar, Logan Kane on bass, and Henry Solomon on saxophone. Although Paul Cornish could not attend the Denver show, the band still gave it their all and had an insanely incredible and successful performance.

Bluebird Theater | Denver, CO

Back in 2021, Thumpasaurus was set to tour with former funk band Turkuaz during their summer and fall tours. Due to Turkuaz separating, and the tour cutting short, Thumpasaurus never got to play their December 11th, 2021, show in Denver, Colorado. Lucky enough for us, we were able to see them back in Colorado opening for the extremely high energy rock band, Foxy Shazam. Lucas Tameran (vocals) stated at the show that he has not been to Denver in years and was thrilled to be there and is hoping to make an appearance in Denver come 2023.

Lucas Tamaren and Logan Kane

As the show begins, the lights dim, the crowd roars with excitement, and out emerges from the sides of the stage is the one and only Thumpasaurus. Sporting matching white one-piece jumpsuits covered in doodles with a clear “THUMP” written on the back of each one, their energy the moment they walked on stage had the crowd in a trance. Everyone was ready for this funky dance party to begin. Thumpasaurus opened with a classic fan favorite, “Dance Like It's Your Life” from their first album in 2018, “The Book of Thump”. It was clear to see from the first song that a large amount of this crowd came out specifically for Thumpasaurus, which is incredible for an opening band.

Lucas filling up a fan's cup | Bluebird Theater

Lead singer and guitarist, Lucas Tamaren, is a powerhouse performer that captures the crowd the moment he steps on stage. His stage presence is unmatched as he clearly puts his entire heart and soul into every single song he sings. Lucas Tamaren was even kind enough to pour out his PBR into the cup of an excited fan in the front row who knew every word to every single song. A perfect example of how engaging this band is with their fans.

Logan Kane | Thumpasaurus

Thumpasaurus was heating up on stage playing several fan favorite tunes of theirs such as, “I’m Too Funky”, “Evil”, “Alien”, “What Do I Do”, “You Are So Pretty”, and my personal favorite song “I’m Pissed”. Thumpasaurus even busted out an unreleased song to which is unnamed to the public, but the crowd was screaming in excitement as Lucas Tamaren screams “Pay Attention to ME!” in this eccentric punk song.

Henry Solomon | Bluebird Theater

Just when we thought the show could not get any better, Thumpasaurus pulls out their top hit song “Struttin” from their 2021 ‘Thumpaverse’ album. The crowd went absolutely wild when this song started. The song “Struttin” has taken over social media, specifically on Tiktok with their song being used over 17,200 times in Tiktok videos. While in town, the Denver Zoo even invited Thumpasaurus to strut with their flock of flamingos to make a Tiktok video with their hit song that you can view here. If you have not heard the song “Struttin” yet, take a listen, you’re guaranteed to have a smile on your face and your toes tapping to the beat in no time.

Thumpasaurus | Bluebird Theater | Denver, CO

Closing out their set with one final song, the band took stage and directed everyone to sing and dance along to their song “Space Barn'' from their album ‘Thumpaverse’. Every single person understood that assignment as the theater filled with the amplified sound of everyone shouting “SPACE BARN '' as directed by the band. They truly left it all on the stage with this one as everyone was jumping, dancing, and singing. It was the perfect way to end a phenomenal set and left the crowd wanting more. Several people chanted “one more song” as no one wanted them to stop playing. It was safe to say this show was out of this world.

Henry Was | Thumpasaurus

We look forward to Thumpasaurus returning to Denver hopefully in 2023, maybe headlining their own show? Let us hope so!

ZHU | Red Rocks Amphitheatre

As the lights dimmed and the show began, the stage was set with 200+ crystal clear chairs illuminated with a glowing blue light with smoke drifting beneath the chairs into the cheering crowd. These musical chairs represent ZHU’s latest seven track mixtape “Musical Chairs Mixtape (Vol. 1)” which was released at the end of July 2022 shortly before his tour with Swedish House Mafia. The lights faded to white as ZHU emerged and began his 10th ever Red Rocks performance with the song ‘ID’ leading into ‘Came For the Low” followed by new song “The Fall”, which appears on his newest mixtape. At this point, the crowd was grinning from ear to ear as dancing lights appeared on the rocks and over the crowd. On Friday, December 2nd, 2022, Andy Frasco & The U.N. performed their largest headlining show to date at the well-loved Ogden Theatre located in Denver, Colorado. Opening for Andy Frasco & The U.N. was the one and only, Doom Flamingo, and featured artists such as Nick Gerlach on saxophone.

Ogden Theatre | Denver, CO

Doom Flamingo | Denver, Colorado

This nearly sold-out show kicked off hot and heavy with an epic opening performance from Doom Flamingo. The band opened their set with one of their newly released songs ‘Evil’ which perfectly set the mood for the evening ahead.

Kanika Moore & Doom Flamingo | Denver, Colorado | December 2nd, 2022

Kanika Moore’s vocals and stage presence was nothing short of perfection as she commanded the stage with her powerhouse vocals and incredible dance moves. The crowd was all eyes on her, almost in a trance, but who can blame them. Her performance of ‘Blade’, ‘Stay’, and ‘Runaway’ during this show gave me absolute chills as she showed off her impeccable vocal talent and wide vocal range leaving the crowd's jaws on the floor.

Kanika Moore serenades a Denver audience member

This is true for one fan in particular. During the song ‘Replicant’, Kanika Moore serenaded her in the front row to which that fan then stated after “This is the most romantic thing that’s ever happened to me”.

Doom Flamingo | Ogden Theatre

Doom Flamingo then flowed into one of their other newly released songs, ‘Happy Boi’, which had the crowd movin’ and groovin’ in all directions.

Doom Flamingo | Ogden Theatre

Ryan Stasik | Doom Flamingo

Standout performances from Ryan Stasik (bass), Thomas Kenney (guitar), and Mike Quinn (saxophone, keys, vocals) during songs such as Lux Noir featuring epic solos on all fronts including incredible drums from Sean Bing (drums) and Ross Bogan (keys) on keys.

Sean, Kanika, and Ryan | Denver, Colorado

Thomas Kenney | Doom Flamingo | Denver, CO

Closing out the end of the set was Doom Flamingo's newest single ‘303 Love’. What better place to perform that song than in the “303” itself. Overall, an amazing opening performance to set the night off right.

Andy Frasco & The U.N. | Denver, CO

Andy Frasco & The U.N. kicked off their performance with the feel-good song ‘Make It Work’ which was a beautiful way to begin the show. This flowed right into their song ‘Mature As Fuck’ which is such an iconic song that perfectly set the tone for the entire night ahead. I can't stress enough how loudly the crowd was singing along to this song, myself included. Following that was the song ‘The Walk’ which featured an incredible saxophone performance by Ernie Chang (saxophone) with solos and riffs that almost blew the roof off The Ogden.

Andy Frasco & The U.N. | Ogden Theatre

Ernie Chang | Ogden Theatre

Andy Frasco & The U.N. | Ogden Theatre

Every member of this band has such a unique energy about them and stands out on their own in such a special way that you do not see with most other bands. Shawn Eckels (guitar) on lead guitar blew everyone's minds with his pure talent and ability to shred solo after solo. Following this performance, Shawn Eckels was officially made a “Fender Artist”, which is a huge deal, so congratulations to Shawn Eckels (guitar) for that incredible achievement.

Shawn Eckels and Andy Frasco

Floyd Kellogg (bass) is not only one of the most badass bass players I have ever seen live, but his vocals are incredibly powerful, especially during his made-up song mid-performance. Between that and being able to roll around the ground while still playing and not missing a beat is just incredible in every single way.

Andy Frasco | Denver, Colorado

Andy Frasco’s vocals and stage presence is top notch. His combination of positivity, dark humor, and pure talent is such an amazing energy to be around. You can tell during his performances that he truly gives his whole heart into his shows and loves every second of what he does. That goes for everyone in the band as well. Their passion for their craft is very apparent and a beautiful thing to see.

Nick Gerlach | Ogden Theatre

During the performance of ‘Talk About It’, members of Doom Flamingo, as well as Nick Gerlach (saxophone), came out on stage for an unforgettable performance that had everyone switching and sharing instruments. Doom Flamingo's, Ryan Stasik (bass), and Floyd Kellogg (bass) were sharing a bass which was so impressive to watch people from two different bands play the same instrument at the same time. It was pure talent.

Shawn Eckels | Ogden Theatre

Shawn Eckels & Andee Avila | Ogden Theatre

Shawn Eckels (guitar) and Andee Avila (drums) were absolutely shredding it on the guitar together. At one point, Doom Flamingos, Sean Bing (drums), was sharing drums with Andee Avila (drums). Absolutely epic. A true testament to all of their skills and musical knowledge.

Andy Frasco | Ogden Theatre

Unpredictable is a great way to describe an Andry Frasco & The U.N show as you never know what twists and turns lie ahead, in literally the best way possible. During the middle of the show, Andy Frasco brought out his childhood best friend since he was twelve years old to stage drive with him. First, Andy Frasco tossed a couple of beers to the crowd, to which they then proceeded to gracefully leap into the crowd and chug said beers while getting carried back to stage. Between that, and instructing the crowd on how to dance the horah to “Hava Nagila”, it was all iconic and perfectly represents how fun and wild an Andy Frasco & The U.N. is. Throw in an impromptu performance of ‘Break Stuff’ by Limp Bizkit just to spice up the night a little bit. I truly never know what is going to come next at these shows, and it is the absolute best.

Andy & Kanika | Ogden Theatre

Kanika Moore | Ogden Theatre | Denver, Colorado

Joining Andy Frasco & The U.N. on stage for multiple songs was Doom Flamingo's vocalist, Kanika Moore. Best Friends with Andy Frasco, this beautiful friendship was incredibly heartwarming to watch on stage. They started by performing the song ‘Love Hard’ which was a gorgeous performance that had the love and friendship between them radiating into the crowd.

Ogden Theatre | Denver, CO

Andy Frasco & The U.N. | Denver, CO

Following the recent loss of Fleetwood Mac singer and keyboardist, Christine McVie, Kanika Moore  and Andy Frasco & The U.N. performed a heartfelt Fleetwood Mac cover of ‘You Make Loving Fun’, which was a beautiful memorial to an incredible legend in the music industry.

Kanika Moore | Ogden Theatre

Kanika Moore and other members of Doom Flamingo retook the stage with Andy Frasco & The U.N. with one more close out performance of the song ‘Dancin’ Around Our Grave’. This song highlights the beautiful vocal duo of Andy Frasco (vocals) and Kanika Moore (vocals). This was the most perfect way to close out the show before the encore performances.

Ogden Theatre | Denver, CO

Encoring their performance starting with the song ‘Dream’ felt fitting while closing out their largest headlining show. Andy Frasco always preaches a positive outlook on life and this song is a beautiful reminder that all you gotta do is dream. Performances like tonight are truly a testament to that.

Andy Frasco | Denver, CO

This was without a doubt the most wild, fun, and uplifting concert experience I have ever been to. If you have not had a chance to see Andy Frasco & The U.N. live yet, it's not too late! Their second leg of their tour just started featuring Little Strangers. Learn more about upcoming tour dates here.

In the bustling heart of Denver, beneath a sky promising mischief, the Vortex Music Festival stormed back into action for its 2nd annual jamboree at the funky “The Junkyard”. The imaginative alliance of Meow Wolf and Live Nation sprinkled their sorcery, transmuting The Junkyard from a mere venue to a fantastical dreamscape, a portal to another dimension of art and sound.

Picture this: two iconic stages, the "ARA Stage" and the "ATRIA Stage." Illuminated with psychedelic panache, they were not just stages but portals, ushering in aural escapades from maestros like Parkbreezy, the enigmatic Shady Jones, the cerebral Thought Process, and a host of others. Every artist, like a conjurer, spun their own tale of rhythmic beats, lighting up Vortex’s pulse.

Then, as if scripted by the gods of drama, the heavens wept. But Chase West, that mercurial magician, turned rain into nectar, enveloping the crowd in an otherworldly trance – dancing, laughing, and celebrating in the downpour. And oh, the crowd! An undulating canvas of shimmer, sparkle, and unbridled joy. As you wandered, live art breathed, and larger-than-life sculptures demanded awe at every corner. And lest we forget, mobile florists wafted the calming notes of lavender, a fragrant whisper amidst the auditory storm.

Near the "ARA Stage", festival boutiques blossomed with treasures while food stalls, aromatic and inviting, painted the air with tantalizing hints of the feasts that awaited. This was not just a festival, it was a village fair in the heart of Neverland.

Griz | Vortex Music Festival

The Funk Hunters, never to be outdone, lit the fuse with four incendiary dancers. Their moves? Hypnotic. The crowd’s reaction? Euphoric. Griz’s set was the crown jewel – a mesmerizing trip through time and space, blending “Your Light” and “Mystic Dub” with an unexpected twist of the Backstreet Boys. The crescendo? A heartfelt speech, promising new horizons after a brief intermission in his musical journey.

Mindchatter then stepped in, with a rendition of “I Can Change” that not just touched, but embraced the soul. The xylophone notes, a plaintive echo of memories, left an indelible mark.

And as twilight gave way to the seductive embrace of night, Justin Martin ascended the Atria Stage throne, his beats a siren's call drawing all into the heart of Vortex. As the last note faded and the anticipatory whispers of Vortex 2024 bubbled up, one thing was clear: this wasn’t just a festival. It was an odyssey, a revelation, a promise of magic yet to come. Count me in for next year, because the Vortex beckons!
