The second day of the 2022 Skull and Roses Festival dawned bright and sunny. By mid-afternoon, the festival grounds swelled with a much larger crowd than the first day, with many day-trippers arriving for the first time. The temperature soared into the mid-'80s, a near-record for the day, but luckily a stiff breeze from the ocean cooled things off in the late afternoon. Kitesurfers began to replace the small army of surfers who had dominated surfers' point earlier in the day.

One microphone, a Wurtlizer electric piano, and the acoustics of Lucy’s Meat Market were all Jeff Babko (keys) and Woody Mankowski (vocals, saxophone) needed to record and film Ebunctions’ new single “She Don’t Love Me” (out now). The studio just happens to be run by the band’s longtime friend and engineer Pete Min, who mixed their upcoming debut This Just In right in house.

Returning to the stripped-back, string band sound of their busking years, Lost Dog Street Band’s new album Glory is a searing testament to recovery, redemption and resolve. Fronted by songwriter Benjamin Tod and his wife, fiddler Ashley Mae, the DIY band began out of desperation on the sidewalks of Nashville roughly a decade ago, but now sustains a significant national audience that’s drawn to their authentic songwriting, old-time instrumentation, and hard-won independence.

Steely Dead is a musical hybrid of the Grateful Dead and Steely Dan. Sonic worlds collide, between the structure, arrangement and precision studio recordings of rock legends Steely Dan, cross-pollinated with the Grateful Dead’s free-flowing, melodic improvisation and masterful song segues. Steely Dead merges these major concepts together while infusing the influence unto each band.
