Camper Van Beethoven packed The Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco on Saturday night to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Telephone Free Landslide Victory, their debut album. The 80s indie stalwarts played a two-hour show that started with the entirety of the 1985 record (played in the original track order) and then moved on to a retrospective of their entire catalog.

Anticipation has been running high since the announcement in February that acclaimed banjo player and singer Gena Britt of the GRAMMY-nominated ensemble Sister Sadie had been signed to pre-eminent bluegrass label, Mountain Home Music Company. Now, the veteran artist is releasing her first single for the label, a new rendition of an under-appreciated favorite that, like Britt herself, brings together past and present in the service of a compelling musical vision.

North Carolina duo Watchhouse (Andrew Marlin & Emily Frantz) have shared new single “Firelight,” the final advance offering from their forthcoming album Rituals (out May 30). A delicate and intimate reflection on the inevitable cycle of both change and consistency, “Firelight” finds Frantz stepping into the spotlight for vocals on this track, framed by bouzouki, harmonium and mandolin (Marlin) and graceful accents of pedal steel (Matt Smith). 

Kansas City-bred, New Orleans-based musician Samantha Fish – “a genuine force of sonic prowess” (Rolling Stone) and one of the most electrifying guitarists of her generation – has unleashed her new solo album Paper Doll, out now on Rounder Records.
