Goose Makes Their Allianz Amphitheater Debut With “Chocolate Town,” Funk, and Ferocity

Goose played their first show ever at the Allianz Amphitheater at Rivermont in Richmond, VA, nestled by the James River, on October 2nd, 2025. The brand-new 7,500-capacity venue is wrapping up its first concert season by hosting two nights of the indie groove quartet. Their show included a first-time-played cover, "Chocolate Town" by Ween, as well as seasoned jams to crush their inaugural show.

The show began with “Everything Must Go.” Multi-instrumentalist Peter Anspach began on the Nord keyboard. Drummer Cotter Ellis found a nice rhythm on the cymbals. As the band shifted into a short layered jam, guitarist Rick Mitarotonda delivered some tension and release early.

As the song ended, Ellis moved the microphone into singing position as they hopped into “Draconian Meter Maid.” Mitarotonda continued to soar as the band went into a dark, funky section that saw Anspach on the clav. Bassist Trevor Weekz took the helm as the Constitution State quartet found a nice groove. Anspach was back on the Nord as the jam culminated.

And the slow, melodic “All I Need" was up next. Another abridged “Same Old Shenanigans" followed, which did not include the commonly paired counterpart “(dawn).” “S.O.S.,” from their 2021 release Shenanigans Nite Club, flowed next. “Chocolate Town,” a first-time-played Ween cover, followed with a bluegrass-inspired cadence. Anspach picked up his guitar while Ellis contributed whistling.

Anspach returned to the Nord as they floated into “California Magic.” Mitarotonda sailed into a delicious blues-rock jam. A six-string slinger, he's a saint and he's a sinner. Weekz took over the jam as they went into a euphonious and thumping groove. Anspach was dialed in on his Rhodes electric piano.

The vintage “Indian River" was up next from their first release Moon Cabin. This ’80s synth version brought a retro feel to this great set. Anspach colored the tune on the Nord with piano-like effects. The band glided into a “Welcome to Delta” tease. This song is a Goose original that was played once on March 2, 2022, at the 9:30 Club. A happy groove evolved and ended this thirteen-minute gem.

The band shifted into "(dawn),” which, as we mentioned, is normally paired with “S.O.S.” The band has recently played the two separately. Anspach pivoted to the Rhodes and added an upbeat vibe as Ellis drove the rhythm train. Weekz picked up steam slapping the bass as Anspach toggled the Rhodes and B3. Mitarotonda brought this ripping sequence home to end Set One.

Set Two kicked off with an "Animal" that went dark quickly. Anspach added an ambient feel with a Roland Juno-60 synth. Weekz once again took over during the melodic soundscape that followed as Mitarotonda delved into prog-rock noodling. This jam was Goose at their finest.

A seamless transition took the boys into a red-drenched "Red Bird." Anspach played Rhodes electric piano while singing this heartfelt tune. The band dropped into an ambient texture jam as Ellis and Weekz were locked into a funky groove. This grew into a raging inferno of clever jam rock that was arguably Type II.

Anspach continued on the Nord as the band approached an electrifying blues-rock transition that landed in "Atlas Dogs.” Ellis crushed a resonant pattern on the drums as the band took flight during this Vasudo original tune. Lighting Director Andrew Goedde saturated the stage with a sheet of light. An intricate guitar jam took a dark turn into a layered jam that included the starburst effect on the lights and transitioned the song into “Dim Lights.” This tune was played with an electric setup for the first time in their career and the third time by Goose as a band. This heartfelt tune originated with the Goose side project Orebolo. They have played the song with acoustic instruments twice as Goose, in both Cincinnati, OH, and San Juan Del Cabo, Mexico.

With the starburst lighting effect still applied, the band softly moved into a different groove that brought a huge smile to Anspach’s face. The drum beats slowly increased and Mitarotonda cleverly pulled the band into a disco dance party. Anspach made industrial sounds on the Rhodes as the band firmly moved into “Sinnerman” by Nina Simone. This song has quickly evolved into one of their premiere jam vehicles. A soft jam grew into a raging, EDM-inspired inferno that the Goose community has collectively titled “Goontz.” This jam delved into minor-chord territory with an evil bass line. The lights circled the stage like a curtain as the band brought the groove back to “Sinnerman” to end this stellar set.

Goose returned with a looming curfew approaching and dropped into a short but rocking version of “Love Light” by Bobby Blue Band. Anspach joined Mitarotonda on guitar to end this bubbly tune on a high note.
