Actor and activist George Takei has started a Care2 petition to gather support for the Muslim community and allow signers to speak out against Trump policies that would target them. Takei plans to deliver the petition signatures in person to the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) and government officials as a show of support.

On his Care2 petition, Takei writes about how when he was just five years old, his family was rounded up at gunpoint and forced into a Japanese American internment camp.

“During that time, fear and racism drove government policy, creating a living hell for over 120,000 innocent Japanese Americans, most of whom were U.S. citizens,” Takei writes. “I have spent my life trying to ensure something like this never happens again. But dark clouds once more are gathering.”

In mid-November, a former spokesperson for a major super PAC backing Trump said the mass internment of innocent Japanese Americans sets a “precedent” for Trump to follow through with his plan to create a Muslim registry.

Takei’s Care2 petition was launched just days before Wednesday’s confirmation hearing is set to take place for Trump’s Department of Homeland Security pick, John Kelly.

Trump’s 100-day plan includes a commitment to suspend immigration from “terror-prone regions.”

“It starts with a registry, with restrictions, with irrationally ascribed guilt, and with fear,” Takei writes. “But we know well where it might lead.

“National security must never again be permitted to justify wholesale denial of constitutional rights and protections,” he continues. “If it is freedom and our way of life that we fight for, our first obligation is to ensure that our own government adheres to those principles. Without that, we are no better than our enemies.”

A new Care2 petition from Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, actor on the HBO series Game of Thrones and goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme, is calling on fathers to unite and empower women and girls by promoting literacy and education around the world.  Nearly 17,000 people have taken the pledge.

“Millions of girls and women are living in poverty right now. Half a billion women around the world can’t read, 62 million girls are denied the right to education, and 155 countries still have laws that discriminate against women. It's our collective responsibility to do what we can to help,” said Coster-Waldau.

“A key part of my mission, in collaboration with Care2 and UNDP, is to fight for gender equality and the empowerment of women. When we empower women, everyone benefits: more children go to school, incomes rise, and families are healthier and happier.”

Coster-Waldau’s Care2 petition, which coincides with International Women’s Day on March 8 calls on fathers to help end gender inequality for all women and girls by:

●       Reminding our daughters regularly that there is absolutely nothing they cannot achieve.
●       Empowering our daughters to be leaders and to give a voice to those who are less fortunate and forgotten.
●       Speaking out against child marriage, forced marriage and female genital mutilation.
●       Supporting policies and legislation that combat violence against women all over the world.

“My petition asks fathers around the world to dedicate themselves to empowering young women and girls by reminding their daughters that there is nothing they cannot achieve; to help ensure young women and girls have just as much opportunity as their male counterparts; to encourage young women and girls to voice their opinions loudly and often.

“I’m also asking fathers to speak out against practices like  child and forced marriage and female genital mutilation, and to support policies and legislation that combats violence against women all over the world,” added Coster-Walduau.
