Education programs include the Don “Moose” Jamison Heritage School of Music, the HSM Beginners program, the Tom Dent Congo Square Lecture Series, the Class Got Brass competition for school brass bands, workshops in music production, vocal classes at recreation centers around the city and more. Economic Development initiatives include Community Partnership Grants, the Catapult Fund accelerator program and the Sync Up entertainment industry workshops. Cultural enrichment programs include the Jazz & Heritage Concert Series and the annual Foundation Festivals: the Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival, the Congo Square Rhythms Festival/Treme Creole Gumbo Festival, and the Louisiana Cajun-Zydeco Festival. The Foundation also owns radio station WWOZ 90.7-FM, the Jazz & Heritage Archive and the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center – an education and community facility named for Jazz Fest founder George Wein and his late wife Joyce. During the pandemic, the Foundation created the Jazz & Heritage Music Relief Fund to support Louisiana's music community whose livelihoods had been adversely impacted by COVID-19.  More than 4,000 grants were awarded to musicians, music industry workers and Black Masking/ Mardi Gras Indians.  For more about the Foundation, please visit www.jazzandheritage.org.

The Jazz & Heritage Foundation Gala kicks off the Jazz Fest season with a celebration of New Orleans music and cuisine. After the cancelation of two festival seasons due to Covid-19, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell made a triumphant return, as 475,000 festivalgoers attended the event over seven days and two weekends, Festival organizers announced today.

“Jazz Fest fans make the Festival come to life,” said Quint Davis, Producer/Director of the event. “Thanks to everyone who was in that number. This was Jazz Fest at its very best.”

The Festival once again celebrated the rich culture of Louisiana and the best of American roots and world music on 13 stages at the Fair Grounds Race Course. Equally stunning is the Festival’s remarkable presentation of New Orleans and Louisiana’s amazing cuisine culture, a great food Festival in itself, in addition to three museum quality arts and crafts expos.

With more than 500 New Orleans groups, covering the full range of street culture, Gospel, Blues, Jazz, R&B, and more, Jazz Fest’s showcase of this incredible musical community continues to set the Festival apart. Highlights included: Tributes to artists central to New Orleans culture and to the Festival legacy—Festival founder George Wein; Dr. John, Art and Charles Neville; Ellis Marsalis, Dave Bartholomew, and others. The tradition of hosting the highest level of special guests included the second Jazz Fest appearance by The Who; the Red Hot Chili Peppers closing out the first weekend; Ziggy Marley performing the songs of Bob Marley; Luke Combs headlining locals Thursday; a signature return to performing after three years by Stevie Nicks, joining Lauren Daigle, Erykah Badu, and Mavis Staples, all on the second Saturday. Also a part of the Festival musical family is the wide variety of international music, which this year featured Cimafunk of Cuba, Bombino of Niger, Lakou Mizik of Haiti, Son Rompe Pera of Mexico, and DakhaBrakha of Ukraine.

Next year’s event is scheduled for April 28 – May 7, 2023. For the most up-to-date Jazz Fest info, visit www.nojazzfest.com and follow the Festival on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The 2023 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell drew 460,000 festivalgoers to this year’s event, Jazz Fest organizers announced today, as the Festival once again transformed the Fair Grounds Race Course and the entire city into a cultural destination for music lovers from all over the world.

“The success of Jazz Fest owes everything to the magic of New Orleans and to all of the culture bearers of the state of Louisiana,” said Quint Davis, Producer/Director of the event. “We’re already working on next year’s Festival. Let’s do it again!”

Over its two weekends Jazz Fest presented seven days of the region’s best music—blues, gospel, rock, R & B, traditional and contemporary jazz, Cajun and zydeco, brass band and Mardi Gras Indian music, and much more—along with an unparalleled mix of the greatest American roots and world music. As always, Jazz Fest served up more than 100 different dishes of Louisiana’s famously irresistible cuisine from an only-at-Jazz Fest menu that offers fine-dining quality food in a festival setting. Three acclaimed arts and crafts fairs also showcased the handmade crafts of Louisiana and beyond.

Highlights this year included: An opening day Festival Stage show of back-to-back-to-back all-stars—Big Freedia, Tank and the Bangas, and an exhilarating Jazz Fest debut by Lizzo; farewell tour appearances by both Dead & Co. and Kenny Loggins; Ed Sheeran’s return to the Festival as an international superstar; the “Locals Thursday” guitar legend double bill of Louisiana-born blues hero Buddy Guy and Jazz Fest favorite Santana; reggaeton sensation Farruko, among the many musical highlights from Puerto Rico, as the Festival’s Cultural Exchange Pavilion celebrated the rich culture of the U.S. territory; a jazz funeral in honor of the late, great bluesman Walter “Wolfman” Washington; and a redesigned exhibit tent area named the Bruce Brice Art Village, featuring artists Richard Thomas, Terrance Osborne and Brandan “Bmike” Odums. After being the subject of the 2022 poster but unable to perform last year due to a scheduling conflict, Jon Batiste returned to Jazz Fest for an epic performance on Friday, May 5, featuring members of the St. Augustine Marching Band and the Gospel Soul Children. On the final Sunday, Batiste also made surprise appearances with both Mumford & Sons and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, helping to bring the Festival to a climatic conclusion.

Next year’s event is scheduled for April 26 – May 5, 2024. For the most up-to-date Jazz Fest info, visit www.nojazzfest.com and follow the Festival on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
