Inspired by Robertson’s 2016 bestselling memoir Testimony, ONCE WERE BROTHERS: ROBBIE ROBERTSON AND THE BAND is a confessional, cautionary, and sometimes humorous tale of Robertson’s young life and the creation of one of the most enduring groups in the history of popular music. The film blends rare archival footage and interviews with many of Robertson’s friends and collaborators, including Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Scorsese, Taj Mahal, Peter Gabriel, David Geffen and Ronnie Hawkins, among others.

When you walk outside, in the light, and the sparks in your head define your map of the world, your relation to time and thoughts that lead and follow, full of light, discharging constantly. When you talk to others, an exchange of pleasantries, the flow of humanity, breath through a flute, bow on string, colors, sounds. How you never feel it all at once, the best you can do is hop on a wave and ride it.

Our age has us filled to bursting with anxiety, recriminations, separations and segregations, categories, colonies, tribute, miniscule compensation, tokenism, lip service, creeds, dogmas, easy answers, false hopes, compromise, disappointment, emperor's new clothes, and wolves in sheep's clothing.

Spires That in the Sunset Rise have wandered these woods for nearly twenty years. Psychic Oscillations (FPE Records, due October 9) is an active meditation, an album that probes how time works and reworks itself through cyclical structures, loose improvisation, and wordless vocal play, plaints and praises. While at times celebratory, there is also a palpable urgency underlying the entire record. In the worldless vocalizations of sound and breath it is unabashedly body and at the same time entirely transcendent.

Spires That in the Sunset Rise come together with this crisis point in the now and offer this vessel, filled with psychic energy made physical in time. Psychic Oscillations was written over a span of time which included a condensed period of focus during an artist residency at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn, summer of 2018. The instrumentation on this record hones in on cello, alto saxophone, flute, synthesizers, and voice. It is the Spires' twelfth album. Here and now.

Jeff Feuerzeig & Henry Rosenthal, the director / producer team behind The Devil and Daniel Johnston, and Author: The JT LeRoy Story, announces a new documentary project, currently in production, focusing on The Legendary Stardust Cowboy.

Feuerzeig and Rosenthal revealed the news of their new documentary via an exclusive interview with Rolling Stone (read the full interview here). They spoke with RS about how The Legendary Stardust Cowboy (real name: Norman Odam) inspired David Bowie to create the Ziggy Stardust character:

Odam was all but oblivious to his impact on Bowie and the history of glam rock. “David Bowie and the Ledge were Mercury Records labelmates in 1972 when Bowie created his Ziggy Stardust persona,” Feuerzeig says. “The thematic link was Bowie’s fascination with space travel, already transposed onto his hit song ‘Space Oddity,’ and with the Ledge’s song, ‘I Took a Trip on a Gemini Spaceship,” which captivated Bowie, who would cover it 30 years later on his Heathen album. But it wasn’t until 1985 that Norman learned that he, in fact, inspired Bowie.”

The filmmakers hope that the Legendary Stardust Cowboy’s unusual story and wild music will fascinate the same people who latched onto Daniel Johnston’s story. “Norman and Daniel Johnston are both singular artists,” Feuerzeig says. “What they both have and had going for them is that they lived lives and went on journeys that most mere mortals can never imagine. Actual sagas with uncommon twists and turns and poignant emotional blows that a Hollywood narrative film could never have scripted. Daniel ran away from home on a moped and joined a carnival. Norman hopped freight trains and rode the rails as a hobo looking to recapture his fame. These guys are movies.”

SYNOPSIS:

Today, The Reds, Pinks & Purples announce their second LP, Summer at Land's End, to be released Feb. 4, 2022. You can pre-order it here.

Summer at Land's End is not an interlude or tangent for The Reds, Pinks & Purples but rather a perfect fourth movement following the albums Anxiety Art, You Might Be Happy Someday, and Uncommon Weather. As with these self-recorded records (the primary work of songwriter Glenn Donaldson), the songs on Summer at Land's End were crafted slowly and then drawn together to make a unified statement. But here, and more than before, Summer at Land's End combines Donaldson's rueful pop sensibility with a parallel musical universe, one composed of pictures, dreams, and feelings without words. Even if the underlying theme of this collection is one of conflict or unhappiness, the vision of the music presents an escape to a new world, always fading in and out of sight. Check out 'Don't Come Home Too Soon' below for a delightful taste of The Reds, Pinks & Purples' Slumberland.

For listeners who may not be familiar with Donaldson's corner of San Francisco–– the Richmond district––or the current wave of hazy, melodic DIY pop groups performing in the city, Summer at Land's End pulls in images and scenes that feel like a collision of the mundane and the sublime of this present landscape. But settings such as these are the backdrop for personal narratives, expressed as a struggle with love, with companionship and the conflicts of home. With this record, The Reds, Pinks & Purples give less focus to the vanities of a subculture and more to the challenge of connecting with someone, to the ordinary goals of being human and finding harmony with others.

This deliberate saturation in drama and ambiance, along with some of Donaldson's best songwriting to date, is what gives Summer at Land's End its special class in the project's discography. Of the album's cinematic mood, Donaldson refers to films like Summer of '42 and the influence of the classic 4AD catalogue of the 1990s. This style informs much of Donaldson's prior and current ventures of course (The Ivytree, Art Museums, Vacant Gardens, and a dozen projects in between) but now The Reds, Pinks & Purples have taken the mantle, embracing this instinct for instrumental or dreamier modes of pop songwriting. It's a pleasure to experience Summer at Land's End, as this record finds a thrilling balance between songs and sounds, instruments and voices, and the ironic twin poles of art and life.

Portland band The Builders and The Butchers recently announced its seventh official full-length album, Hell & High Water, due May 6 on Badman Recording Co. You can stream the third single "Montana" here and pre-order the album here.

The Builders and the Butchers were formed in the fall of 2005 in Portland, Oregon. The band’s first two years consisted of busking, playing house shows, and showing up unannounced anywhere around Portland where people were gathered. Folks began to take notice and the band transitioned slowly, going from playing on the floor of venues unplugged to gradually adding a mic here, an amp there, until they organically grew into one of the most exciting live acts in the Pacific Northwest. Even when plugged in, a cornerstone of almost every builders show is playing on the floor at some point during the set.

Touring relentlessly from 2007-2012 The Builders gathered a cult dedicated fan base across the US and Europe. Playing dozens of music festivals like Sasquatch and Lollapalooza, as well as supporting artists like Portugal. The Man, Amanda Palmer, Murder By Death, and Heartless Bastards.

In the past few years the members of The Builders and the Butchers have laid roots all around the world, coming together for shows, writing and tours whenever they can. The members are all originally from Alaska. Justin bought a home in Colorado and makes Gin and Whiskey for a living.  Willy has been a captain on a ship based in Malta for the past couple of years. Harvey lives with his family in Washington state and Ryan, Paul and Ray reside in Portland, Oregon.  With all of the logistics and facing a pandemic, wild fires and massive rioting in their hometown, Hell & High Water was a challenging, yet cathartic record to make. The Builders wrote Hell & High Water together as a band in a boat house in the marina where Willy lives.

Frontman Ryan Sollee explains further: “Through the fall and winter of 2019, we would gather weekly, make a fire, drink beer and whisky and try to find some cohesiveness in these tunes. This gathering place was the most inspiring we have had in any creative process for any album up to that date.” It ended up being a stark contrast to the year that followed.  After laying down the initial studio drum tracks with Badman label head Dylan Magierek for the album in February 2020, the band was forced to create remotely - which was a massive challenge, and pushed the band way past its usual comfort zone.

Multi-instrumentalist Ray Rude and Engineer Edgar McCrae, molded and formed this album into life over the course of 2020, and hopefully made something that reflects the struggle, the pain, as well as some really amazing moments from the past year.

The Builders have scheduled their first US and Europe tours (details coming soon!) in several years to support their latest release Hell & High Water.  They hope to make music that brings people together for many years to come.

"For more than a decade, the members of The Builders And The Butchers have specialized in a kind of white-knuckle Americana: Their acoustic folk-rock sound is shot through with nervy, hellfire-and-brimstone intensity. The Portland-born band's hometown brethren in The Decemberists provide a useful reference point — singer Ryan Sollee has a wide-open bellow and a gift for vivid imagery.” - Stephen Thompson, NPR Music

"A truly brilliant artist... Zack’s songs are astonishing and original. He had a peculiar, poetic, and playful mind."  -  Sean Ono Lennon

For years, my friend Connor (aka Tongues Unknown) would tell me about a musician he knew named Zack Rosen, who wrote what he said were some of the best songs he’d ever heard. People gas up their friends all the time so at first I didn’t pay much mind. I even met Zack once at a show but hadn’t heard any of his songs so I didn’t have much to say. I wish I had because looking back I realize it would’ve been a rare chance to speak with a truly brilliant artist.

Zack’s songs are astonishing and original. He had a peculiar, poetic, and playful mind. His chords and words never let you settle for long—taking a surprise turn here, an about-face there, yet it never feels jarring; you’re always left pleasantly surprised. His world is both familiar and strange. His music is infused with fantasy and surrealism, yet it is always grounded by genuine emotion and real life experience. The only artists I can even loosely compare him to are Syd Barrett, and Tamerlane Phillips, (son of John Phillips), both of whom, like Zack, struggled with mental illness. I think Einstein said something about genius and insanity and there being a fine line between them…

The brain of another human being is perhaps the most inaccessible place there is. I don’t know what was going on with Zack, but for whatever reason he wasn’t able to remain in this world, and tragically chose to leave it. He left behind an incredible catalogue of music, much of which was unknown to even his closest friends and family.

I can tell you from personal experience that life has a way of blending beauty and tragedy together into a kind of pain-love continuum; you never get much of one without the other. Zack’s story is as wonderful as it is horrendous, as terrible as it is joyful. In a way that could be said about any of us I guess, so in that sense his music speaks for everyone.

I feel lucky to be a part of bringing these songs out into the world. When you listen to them I know you’ll feel lucky too.

- Sean Ono Lennon

Zachary Golub Rosen suffered with schizophrenia and the effects of medications meant to treat the illness during the last years of his life. He died by suicide May 18, 2019, at the age of 30. Zack grew up in upper Manhattan and attended Fieldston High School and Wesleyan University, where he earned a BA in philosophy in 2011. He was an exceptional acoustic and electric bass player and is credited on more than a dozen albums.

Zack picked up the guitar at around age 12 and was largely self-taught. He wrote instrumental music throughout his life, but he did not start writing songs until his twenties. In his last decade, he wrote and recorded over three dozen songs, many of them while in the throes of his illness. He continued to perform with excellence as both a singer-songwriter (under the name Syzygy) and as an accompanist on bass until a few hours before he died. Late that afternoon he performed in a concert celebrating the end of Ramadan with a Turkish orchestra at Columbia University.

Zack’s songwriting was largely unknown outside a small circle of friends and family. He played about ten Syzygy gigs in small New York City venues, sometimes solo, sometimes with a band that included his friend Connor Grant on guitar. Connor, also a guitarist in Sean Ono Lennon’s band, The GOASTT, is himself a singer-songwriter who goes by the nom d’arte Tongues Unknown, and Zack was his regular bass player and accompanying singer. In 2018, Zack approached Connor about producing his Syzygy project. They were deep into that project at the time of Zack’s death, leaving the record to be finished posthumously. Throughout that process, as Connor combed through Zack’s home bedroom recordings, many more songs were unearthed that no one had heard but Zack.

Schizophrenia did not give Zack the gift of music; it tried to steal it from him. His life was destroyed by a disease he was unable to acknowledge. The shame, stigma, and fear of it made him choose to battle alone until it was too late to stop the progression. While there are glimpses into Zack’s internal battle in the lyrics of some of his songs, to attribute his creativity to his illness sells him short as a writer, an artist, a man. Zack fought his "demons" for years, until he could simply bear it no more. What is truly remarkable, and a testament to his fortitude and determination, is that he was able to keep writing and performing right up until the end, despite the ravages of the disease. In a song (“Find Your Place”) that he wrote and recorded just a week before he died, he sang, "This is no time to die.” He lost his battle eventually, but he was a mighty warrior. And the evidence of that is written all over his work.

Profits from his music will be donated to several non-profit mental-health organizations, including Brain & Behavior Research Foundation, National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI), and Treatment Advocacy Center. To support young musicians, Zack’s parents have endowed a music scholarship in Zack’s name at Wesleyan University, and established a fund that pays for teaching and performance opportunities for adjunct and visiting music faculty beyond their usual responsibilities. Zack's parents will also match and donate every dollar spent on downloads.

A limited vinyl edition (500 copies) was released on Joyful Noise’s White Label Series last month, with 8 additional demos and covers. Just twenty subscriptions are still available here.  Lennon was one of the six 2022 curators for the White Label Series along with Julien Baker, Helado Negro, Sadie Dupuis (Speedy Ortiz), Jasmine White-Gluz (No Joy) and David Yow (Jesus Lizard).

Chapel Hill's Waldo Witt shares the new single, "Without A Sound" from the forthcoming LP, Long Daze, Dark Nights which will be self-released on Feb. 24, 2023.

"This was one of the last songs I wrote for the album, I was really embracing some of my earlier musical influences - the ones that first got me really excited about music like Syd Barrett and Brian Wilson. So it's kind of this psychedelic journey through time, looking through a lens of bright eyed bliss and innocence, and using that lens to try to make sense of or understand the chaos of recent years."

Long Daze, Dark Nights is the upcoming album from Waldo Witt. The artist embraces 60s and 70s psychedelia inspirations like Todd Rundgren, King Crimson, and Brian Wilson, alongside a continued adoration of 80s soft rock and disco, resulting in a vibrant sounding record, full of hooks and charismatic structural twists.

Even in its nostalgic glow, Long Daze, Dark Nights doesn’t linger too long in the past. Hook-heavy throwback odes are abundant, though also resonating with modern production and thematic pursuits. Offering poignant reflection following the past several years of tumult, the release explores themes of uncertainty, instability, and unpredictability. Waldo, his wife, and their van road-tripped through much of the pandemic, and many of the release’s lyrics were written while traveling in isolated areas throughout the country, like rural Montana and Colorado.

The result is filled with introspection and soul-searching, representative of how artistic creation can lead to great self-discovery. The release, in particular, pursues how one feels the need to create and make art. “It leads you to the experience of being completely in the moment, which is what it’s all about,” Waldo says. “The ups, downs, in betweens – all are expressions of the aliveness of being.”

The creative process for Long Daze, Dark Nights began in the summer of 2020, in Taos, New Mexico. Waldo and his van trekked to a variety of studios and ensuing musical collaborations, with new and old friends alike. Much of the recording took place at the late Radio Milk studios in Austin, owned/operated by James Petralli (White Denim). Ample work was also done at Waldo’s home in Chapel Hill, NC.

Waldo’s debut EP, Randall, released in 2019, unveiling his atmospheric and melodic sound. Spanning from the punchy pop of “Crystal Ball” to the emotively lush “Carteret,” Randall was also written primarily out of Waldo’s van, while he was traversing cross-country. The release drew praise for its approach, which paired hypnotic psychedelic production with hooky synth-pop charm. A second EP, Inner Paths, released in 2020.

Today, In The Q Records, along with the Women of Rock Oral History Project proudly announce the release of a new benefit album, The Faithful: A Tribute to Marianne Faithfull featuring 19 cover songs from artists including Shirley Manson, Peaches, Lydia Lunch, Tanya Donelly, Cat Power, Iggy Pop, Bush Tetras, Donita Sparks and more! The full album will be available on streaming platforms Dec. 8 and special edition vinyl variants can be pre-ordered now via IN THE Q RECORDS and BANDBOX. The double LP features original artwork by Jill Emery (Hole, Mazzy Star).

The Faithful is a massive love letter to Marianne Faithfull. Everyone involved with this tribute album has graciously and enthusiastically donated their talent, time, and energy so that all profits can go directly to assist Marianne as she recovers from Long COVID.

The first single from the album, featuring Tanya Donelly & the Parkington Sisters taking on "This Little Bird" is streaming HERE.

"Marianne’s voice has always been one of my favorite instruments, from childhood through today, and her music and spirit have been life-long inspirations. I wanted to cover “This Little Bird” for its fragile and beautiful musical arrangement and melody, and the bittersweet story the lyrics tell. A total honor to get to sing and play this lullaby, and the Parkington Sisters elevate with their vocal and string magic. We’re so grateful to be able to pay tribute to this amazing singer/songwriter and woman." -Tanya Donelly

"I published a book, that was more of a love letter, about Marianne Faithfull in 2021. The depth of my gratitude and devotion can be found in that 40,000 word document, but that was before I got to know the woman behind the icon--or 'the muse', as the boys say. Marianne is funny, smart, intensely creative, an avid reader, and a normal human being who has been through some shit--haven't we all? To me, the fact that Marianne is a regular-ass person who has struggled, overcome addiction, health problems, has experienced love and loss, and continued to amass a musical catalogue as expansive as hers is a testament to her genius. When she lost her voice after contracting Covid, she recorded a spoken word poetry album with Warren Ellis (She Walks in Beauty).

The thing about being an icon or a muse is that it doesn't pay the bills--even if you have over 50 records under your belt. Even if you were the It Girl of the swinging sixties. Even if you're Marianne Faithfull. Marianne built a career as a counter-cultural artist, exploring a multitude of genres and styles. She's worked with countless collaborators, musicians, and producers. As a result, her catalog, and career, can't be easily categorized which basically means she never had a chance of reaching the kind of widespread commercial recognition she deserved. My hope with this record is that Marianne sees how loved, respected, and appreciated she is by her successors. I hope that these versions of her songs introduce a new audience to Marianne Faithfull and inspire them to buy her records. I hope that Marianne Faithfull gets the respect she deserves; preferably in this lifetime." - Tanya Pearson, Founder, Women Of Rock Oral History Project
