For the first time ever in the United States, revered Hawaiian taiko master Kenny Endo joins forces with Japan's trad-pop musical virtuoso Hiromitsu Agatsuma on tsugaru-shamisen (the three-stringed banjo-like instrument which originated in Northern Japan) for a one-night only live performance.Endo's adrenaline-pumping performance is a natural fit with Agatsuma's fast and aggressive style, as they push the limits of one another's skills in concert. Known internationally for border-crossing fusion and audience-pleasing expressions of contemporary takes on these venerated instruments, these musicians promise to deliver a dazzling and unforgettable evening in their much-anticipated return to the Japan Society stage. Tickets are available online or by phone through the Japan Society box office at 212-715-1258. The Japan Society box office is open Monday through Friday from 11:00AM to 6:00PM and on weekends from 11:00AM to 5:00PM. Japan Society is located at 333 East 47th Street, between First and Second Avenues. The venue is easily accessible by the 4 / 5 / 6 trains via the 42nd Street-Grand Central Station or the E / V at Lexington Avenue and 53rd Street. Led by Rod Argent on piano and Colin Blunstone on vocals, the band scored US hits in the mid and late 1960s with "She's Not There," "Tell Her No," and "Time of the Season." Their 1968 album, Odessey and Oracle is ranked #80 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time." In 2011, The Zombies released their fifth studio album, Breathe Out, Breathe In. This latest album enhances the legacy of this monumental rock group with The Independent declaring, "...an authentic 1960s prog-pop tone is sustained through Argent's surging organ and sly piano, combined with the layered harmonies of Blunstone, whose voice seems impressively unravaged by time."Artist Website: http://thezombies.net/Coming together in 2009, Django Django is a British group that met at art school in Scotland and has its roots planted in London, England. This adventurous Rock group melds indescribable electronic flourishes to live instrumentation. Consisting of four members, Django Django's debut self-titled album, has been voted by Rolling Stone Magazine as 26th in its "50 Best Albums of 2012" list. Each track contains its own nation of harmonies, rhythms and textures. Django Django's story looks set to be a long and compelling one. By banging together their thirst for adventure and their exacting high standards, they've produced an album that seems to have everything, but on which everything never seems too much.Artist Website: http://www.djangodjango.co.uk/Just one listen to Adam Green & Binki Shapiro is enough to become enchanted. With deceptively pretty arrangements that echo the emotions of late-sixties Folk-Pop and an easygoing rapport between singers, this duet's collaboration may seem like the perfect accompaniment to a sunny summer's day, Southern-California style. But it works even better as a comforting soundtrack at the end of a dark, lonely night in the big city. The atmosphere the pair conjures up with strummed guitars and discreet layers of synths indeed suggests romantic possibility, but the lyrics are more sweetly melancholic, gently but candidly addressing betrayal, incipient heartbreak, and conjugal discord. It's an approach that makes for compelling repeated listening, as the intimate dramas reveal themselves, and it's one that surprised even Green and Shapiro as their self-titled debut album went on sale in January 2013.Artist Website: http://www.adamandbinki.comA New Yorker by birth and Albanian by roots, DJ Modest P is best known for his long time Saturday night residency at the legendary East Village club Nublu. He is also known for being one of the founders of the seminal Easy Lover loft party and the now defunct Water Taxi Beach party in Long Island City, sharing the decks with world class DJs such as Carl Craig, Grandmaster Flash, Prins Thomas, and many more. He has performed at many venues in NYC and around the world. Modest P, or Petrit Pula as he is known by his real name also heads the Nublu record label.Artist Website: http://www.myspace.com/djprobus
Femi Kuti and The Positive Force have blended Funk, Jazz, and African Folk throughout their 27 year career to create a colorful and distinctive sound in the music world. The records tell their story: After a short spell at Motown, Femi Kuti took on the Afrobeat sound with his first international album in 1998 Shoki Shoki, before rubbing shoulders with the modern urban style of his American peers such as Mos Def and Common on the album, Fight To Win. In 2004 he opened The Shrine, the club where he recorded the live album Africa Shrine. He re-emerged in 2008 with Day by Day and Africa for Africain 2010, for which he received two GRAMMY nominations. In 2012 he was both inducted into the Headies Hall of Fame (the most prestigious music awards in Nigeria) and was the opening act on the Red Hot Chili Peppers' European Tour.Artist Website: http://www.femikuti.tvWebsite: http://www.cityparksfoundation.org/summerstage/Twitter: @SummerStage #SummerStage13 #ThisIsHipHopFacebook: http://www.facebook.com/summerstagenyc
Big Star's Third is a full performance of the iconic album by an astonishing who's who of rock music featuring famed vocalists including Sharon Van Etten, Kurt Vile, Marshall Crenshaw, Pete Yorn, Reeve Carney (Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark), Jonathan Donahue (Mercury Rev) and Becky Stark (Lavender Diamond), supported by an all-star band including Mike Mills (R.E.M.) on bass; Mitch Easter (Let's Active), Chris Stamey (The dB's), Ken Stringfellow (The Posies, Big Star) and Richard Lloyd (Television) on guitar; Dale Baker (Sixpence None the Richer) playing percussion; Charles Cleaver on keys; Django Haskins (The Old Ceremony), Brett Harris and Skylar Gudasz on harmony and guitar; and original Big Star member Jody Stephens on drums, all backed with a twenty-piece chamber orchestra including famed cellist Jane Scarpantoni and the Uptown Horns. In addition, the concert will feature a selection of earlier songs, including the much-hailed "September Gurls" and "In The Streets" (which was used as the theme of the popular TV sitcom "That '70s Show," performed by Cheap Trick). Originally released in 1978, Third was written and recorded when the band was primarily a studio project consisting of Alex Chilton and Jody Stephens of the legendary Memphis rock band Big Star. The original members drew on the musical styles of British Invasion groups while adding their own dark, cathartic themes to Carl Marsh's groundbreaking string arrangements. The album, while long out of print, inspired the alternative rock bands of the 80s and 90s via shared mixtapes passed hand to hand. The Replacements famously released a song "Alex Chilton" that paid tribute to his songwriting genius. R.E.M.'s Peter Buck said, "Big Star served as a Rosetta Stone for a whole generation of musicians." Third is included on Rolling Stone's "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time". Experience this classic of late 70s power pop through the prism of a one-of-a-kind collective of immensely talented fans of one of the most influential American rock bands ever.Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me - the first documentary ever made about the legendary band opens July 3rd at the IFC Center.
For decades Bobby McFerrin has broken all the rules. The 10-time GRAMMY winner has blurred the distinction between pop music and fine art, goofing around barefoot in the world's finest concert halls, exploring uncharted vocal territory, inspiring a whole new generation of a cappella singers and the beatbox movement. His latest album, spirityouall, is a bluesy, feel-good recording, an unexpected move from the music-industry rebel who singlehandedly redefined the role of the human voice with his a cappella hit "Don't Worry, Be Happy," his collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma, Chick Corea and the Vienna Philharmonic, his improvising choir Voicestra, and his legendary solo vocal performances. The spirityouall project embraces Bobby McFerrin's folk, rock, and blues influences without abandoning his fearless improvisational approach or his never-ending exploration of the human voice. He moves seamlessly between lyrics and wordless lines, trading phrases with his band, inviting the audience to sing along. Bobby loves to sing this music, and it shows: spirityouall raises the roof with joyful grooves.Tonight's performance features Bobby McFerrin (vocals), Gil Goldstein (piano, electric piano, accordion, arranger), David Mansfield (violin, mandolin, national resonator guitar, and lap steel), Armand Hirsch (acoustic and electric guitar), Jeff Carney (acoustic bass), Louis Cato (drums, guitar, bass ukelele, vocals) with special guest vocalist, Madison McFerrin.
Between the potency of his richly detailed songwriting, his intensely emotional, soulful vocals and his piercing, expert guitar work, New Orleans' Anders Osborne is a true musical treasure. He is among the most original and visionary musicians writing and performing today. Guitar Player calls him "the poet laureate of Louisiana's fertile roots music scene." New Orleans' Gambit Weekly recently honored Osborne as the Entertainer Of The Year. OffBeat named him the Crescent City's Best Guitarist for the third year in a row, and the Best Songwriter for the second straight year. Osborne also won Song Of The Year for his composition, "Louisiana Gold". Since his recording debut in 1989, Osborne has written virtually all of his own material and contributed memorable songs to a wide variety of artists. Two tunes co-written by Osborne appear on Keb Mo's Grammy-winning 1999 release Slow Down. Country superstar Tim McGraw scored a #1 hit with Anders' song "Watch The Wind Blow By". Osborne's compositions have been covered by artists as diverse as Brad Paisley, Tab Benoit, Jonny Lang and Kim Carnes. His songs have appeared in multiple feature films. He can also be seen performing in an episode of HBO's New Orleans-based drama, Treme.
moe., the preeminent progressive rock band on the music scene today and a quintet of world class musicians, whose creative output equals that of their longevity, will perform an intimate show on Wednesday May 28th at Stage 48 in midtown Manhattan. The band will perform a rare acoustic set in the early part of the evening as part of a VIP ticket package that also includes a top shelf open bar, buffet stations, a commemorative show poster, a meet and greet with the band where fans will get their posters signed, and more. The band will perform a full two-set show for both VIP and general admission audiences beginning at 10pm.Over a journey spanning nearly a quarter-century, moe. has let their knack for dynamic, democratic improvisation influence nearly every facet of the band's existence. In concert, they stretch the boundaries of their source material into intricate, set-long suites where distinct songs seamlessly segue into one another in exhilarating fashion. In the studio, their eclectic, wide-ranging sensibilities manifest in playful, varied albums that spotlight both their fluid musicianship and their incisive, hook-laden songwriting.Available May 27, 2014 on Sugar Hill Records, moe.'s new album No Guts, No Glory finds moe. at their most inventive and resilient. The album's eleven songs (fourteen on the deluxe CD, digital, and double vinyl editions, featurin artwork by Emek) took a winding path. "These songs were written with an acoustic album in mind," says guitarist and vocalist Chuck Garvey. When that original intention fell victim to logistical hurdles, Garvey says, "we ended up making a whole different thing."STAGE 48, located at 605 West 48th Street in Hell's Kitchen NYC, is a four floor, multi-use venue that hosts concerts, nightlife, private and corporate events. Built in the 1950s as a horse stable, the building has been completely remodeled based on the classic beauty of the original industrial architecture while incorporating complementary modern elements to create an ambience that is at once intimate and grandiose. A large horseshoe balcony overlooks the main floor, providing excellent site-lines of the 34-foot wide stage. Multiple elevated VIP areas are located throughout the venue. A newly installed state-of-the-art sound, lighting and video system ensures an A/V experience as powerful and inspiring as any in the city. Tickets to all shows are available in person at the Stage 48 box office Monday through Friday from 11AM to 6PM and two hours before any showtime. Tickets may also be purchased online at Ticketweb.com
In June of 1986 Sun Ra and the Omniverse Jet Set Arkestra performed a free concert in the Naumberg Bandshell in Central Park, and the summer music landscape in New York City changed forever. Today, nearly 30 years later, SummerStage is New York City's largest free performing arts festival, presenting work in all performing arts disciplines, with a focus on New York's unique neighborhoods. SummerStage has touched the lives of more than six million fans from around the world.
In celebration of this milestone, City Parks Foundation, the independent nonprofit organization that produces the festival, plans to deepen the impact the festival has in neighborhoods throughout New York City. The 2015 season will feature more shows in Central Park and 15% growth in the number of performances offered in neighborhood parks around the city, creating 6-day "mini-festivals" in 8 parks, featuring music, dance, theater, film, circus and family days. In total this new model will add over 20 performances to the fourteen parks SummerStage presents in, bringing more than 140 unique artists to these stages around the city.
"As an organization we are dedicated to working in traditionally underserved neighborhoods across the city," said Heather Lubov, Executive Director of City Parks Foundation. "By presenting artists and genres that reflect the cultures and communities in these parks, introducing disciplines such as dance or theater alongside musical performances, and providing all of this fantastic art free of charge, we are building new audiences and fostering a broader interest in the arts here in New York City."
SummerStage's artistic mission is to celebrate the cultural legacy and diversity of New York City. In our 30 years, we have presented such legendary performers as Youssou N'Dour, Curtis Mayfield, David Byrne, Max Roach, Patti Smith, Gil Scott-Heron, Lou Reed, James Brown, Pete Seeger, Celia Cruz, Miriam Makeba, Jimmy Cliff, and Hugh Masekela, as well as once lesser-known artists, influenced by these icons, who have gone on to become famous in their own right. Vampire Weekend, Alabama Shakes, The Black Keys, The xx, Sarah McLachlan, Thievery Corporation, Jack Johnson, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, and Florence & The Machine are just some of those now-famous performers.
"SummerStage is the festival that truly celebrates New York City," said Director of Arts & Cultural Programs for City Parks Foundation, Ian Noble. "From the iconic to the avant garde, from opera to hip-hop, film to circus, there is no other festival like it. Not only do we select our artists to reflect the nature of each neighborhood, but each park and audience becomes part of the adventure and charm of each and every show."
"Capital One Bank is proud to support SummerStage as it showcases the diversity and artistic vitality of New York," said Michael Slocum, President, Commercial Banking and Northeast Regional President, Capital One. "The arts play an important role in building strong, healthy communities, and we are pleased to help the festival reach new audiences across the city."
The 2015 30th Anniversary Season will open with a free concert in Central Park featuring the Tedeschi Trucks Band. Other notable talents include: Angelique Kidjo, the iconic African singer-songwriter; London's soul-funk collective Jungle; Canadian folktronica artist, Caribou; Franco-Norwegian circus duo, Magmanus; and a special celebration of dance and music from the legendary Broadway musical The Wiz. Additionally, Brazil's pioneering mangue-beat superstars, Nação Zumbi, will return to SummerStage 20 years after their historic and epic U.S. debut. A number of parks will welcome neighborhood heroes to their stages, like Staten Islander Mack Wilds, and a screening of Time is Illmatic, the documentary that follows Queensbridge prodigal son Nas, as his life leads up to his critically-acclaimed, seminal album, Illmatic. Oliver Lake Big Band will premier a commissioned piece during the expanded Charlie Parker Jazz Festival weekend, and a 30th Anniversary DJ commission with Quantic, Gilles Peterson, and Afrika Bambaataa, will take audiences through the decades of SummerStage.

Formed in 2010 with a spirit of adventure that saw Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks shelve their equally successful solo careers, Tedeschi Trucks Band, an 11-piece tour-de-force, has quickly become the vanguard of modern roots music. Driven by Trucks, #16 of the top 100 Guitarists of All Time (Rolling Stone), and Tedeschi''s impassioned, blues-soaked vocals, the group enlists dual drummers, two vocalists, a three-piece horn section, bass, and a multi-instrumentalist keyboard player for what is a greater-than-the-sum-of-its-

Tom Rush's impact on the American music scene has been profound. Tom helped shape the folk revival in the '60s, starting with the now legendary Club 47, and helped spur on the folk renaissance of the '80s and '90s. His music has influenced and left its stamp on generations of artists including James Taylor, Garth Brooks, Shawn Colvin and others. His early recordings introduced the world to the work of Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne and James Taylor. Tom's shows are filled with the joy of terrific story-telling, the sweet melancholy of beautiful ballads and the passion of gritty blues and much loved songs like "No Regrets," "Urge For Going," and "Rockport Sunday." Experience the distinctive guitar style, wry humor and warm, expressive voice that have made him both a legend and a lure to audiences around the world. Now celebrating his 52nd year on stage and in the studio with a show that is as timely as ever, Tom is still doing what audiences love him for: writing and playing passionately, tenderly ... knitting together the musical traditions and talents of our times.
Matt Nakoa is an internationally touring singer/songwriter, recently appearing at The White House, throughout India, and regularly with folk legend Tom Rush. Matt was accepted as a vocalist to Berklee College of Music where he studied alongside soon-to-be Grammy winners St. Vincent and Esperanza Spalding among others. After school, Matt landed in NYC's vibrant piano bar scene. There he quickly became a star performer at Manhattan's famous Brandy's Piano Bar, with lines waiting outside the door each Saturday night. As if illustrating two sides of himself, Matt's first album, Light In The Dark (2012), is a sweeping pop opus, while A Dozen Other Loves (2014) explores an intimate acoustic palette. Across the board his song craft has garnered awards, including a win at Kerrville Folk Festival's prestigious New Folk Competition.
Despite his relatively young age, Grammy-nominated MPress recording artist Seth Glier is a seasoned troubadour. A singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist who averages over 150 live performances annually, Seth has gone from opening act to headlining his own shows and playing major festivals. He's shared the stage with artists as diverse as James Taylor, Ani DiFranco, Martin Sexton, Emmylou Harris and Ryan Adams, and has quickly become known for his passionate live sets and powerful command of both piano and guitar. His music has also caught the ears of fans, industry and critics alike, with USA Today stating that his "exquisite tenor echoes Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel." His first Daytrotter session was called "a genuine revelation" by Blurt Magazine, and was praised by M Music & Musicians Magazine for its "shimmering, seductive melodies."

In addition to being the name of this trance-inducing musical style, the term "gnawa" also refers to the people originally from kingdoms spanning Mali to Ghana who were enslaved by the Moorish rulers and brought North to present-day Morocco. The Jewish presence in Morocco dates back to over 2,500 years ago and upon interaction with the gnawa community, a bond formed over appreciation for gnawa music and its healing powers. Gnawa music pre-dates Islam and originally centered around animistic, spiritual, mystical concepts sung in sub-Saharan languages such as Bambara, Fulani, and Sudani. Upon embracing Islam, gnawa songs began to incorporate Arabic language and themes around the Muslim prophets. "Sebitiyin," meaning The Saturdays in Moroccan Arabic, is the collection of songs that grew out of the gatherings hosted by the Jewish community for the revered gnawa maalems whom they deeply respected. Themes of these songs still include the original elements of spirits and the natural world, and later came to incorporate shared saints from their Abrahamic traditions. Today, it is still rare to find a maalem that knows this full repertoire so we are especially lucky to have Maalem (Master) Hassan Ben Jaafer, son of the late Abdallah Ben Jaafer, lead us through a powerful moment of unity in music.
Innov Gnawa is a young musical collective dedicated to exploring Morocco's venerable gnawa music tradition in the heart of New York City. Formed in the summer of 2014 by Moroccan expat Samir LanGus, the group draws on the considerable talents and expertise of Hassan Ben Jaafer, a Maâlem, or master gnawa musician, originally from Fes, Morocco. Under the guidance of Ben Jaafer, Innov has delved deep into the roots and rituals of gnawa music, and made a big splash in New York City, playing some of the city's most prestigious rooms including Lincoln Center, Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn Bowl and the storied backroom of Brooklyn's Barbès. For the uninitiated, gnawa music is the ritual trance music of Morocco's black communities, originally descended from slaves and soldiers once brought to Morocco from Northern Mali and Mauritania. Often called "The Moroccan Blues," gnawa music has a raw, hypnotic power that's fascinated outsiders as diverse as writer/composer Paul Bowles, jazz giant Randy Weston and rock god Jimi Hendrix. The music is utterly singular, played on an array of unique instruments -- from the lute-like sintir that the Maâlem uses to call the tune, to the metal qarqaba (castinets) with which the kouyos (chorus) keep time and pound out clattering, hypnotic rhythms. Hailed by Brooklyn Magazine as one of the "5 Bands You Need to Know in Brooklyn's Arabic Music Scene," Innov Gnawa make great use of this traditional repertoire, and add their own, contemporary spin with additional African and Latin percussion. Taken as a whole, this exciting new outfit works hard to fuse a centuries old North African tradition with the pulse and attitude of New York City.

A classical tabla virtuoso of the highest order, Zakir Hussain is well-known for his constant explorations of music from around the world. His latest ensemble, CrossCurrents, attempts to portray all directions of inspiration between the idioms of jazz and Indian music. The great bassist Dave Holland, a player with one of the most distinguished careers in jazz, brings his singular vision to the group. The ensemble pays tribute to pioneering musicians and composers on opposite sides of the world who built a bridge which could be traversed in both directions. Joining Hussain and Holland will be Chris Potter (saxophone), Shankar Mahadevan (vocals), Louiz Banks (keyboards), Sanjay Divecha (guitar), and Gino Banks (drums).
The pre-eminent classical tabla virtuoso of our time, Zakir Hussain is appreciated both in the field of percussion and in the music world at large as an international phenomenon. A national treasure in his native India, he is one of the world's most esteemed and influential musicians, renowned for his genre-defying collaborations. Widely considered a chief architect of the contemporary world music movement, Hussain's contribution has been unique, with many historic and groundbreaking collaborations, including Shakti, Remember Shakti, Masters of Percussion, the Diga Rhythm Band, Planet Drum, Tabla Beat Science, Sangam with Charles Lloyd and Eric Harland, in trio with Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer and, most recently, with Herbie Hancock. The foremost disciple of his father, the legendary Ustad Allarakha, Hussain was a child prodigy who began his professional career at the age of twelve, touring internationally with great success by the age of eighteen. As a composer, he has scored music for numerous feature films, major events and productions. He has composed two concertos, and his third, the first-ever concerto for tabla and orchestra, premiered in India in September, 2015, in Europe and the UK in 2016, and in the US in April, 2017, by the National Symphony Orchestra at Kennedy Center. A Grammy award winner, he is the recipient of countless awards and honors, including Padma Bhushan, National Heritage Fellowship and Officier in France's Order of Arts and Letters.
Over the course of a nearly five-decade career, bassist/composer Dave Holland has exemplified the evolutionary process in musical form, reinventing his concept and approach with each new project while constantly honing his instantly identifiable voice. Since his professional debut in the mid-1960s with Miles Davis's legendary Bitches Brew band, that voice has been heard in a remarkable number of different contexts. He collaborated with Spanish guitar legend Pepe Habichuela, accompanied the great vocalist Betty Carter in her last years, forged a new sound with the pioneering avant-garde quartet Circle alongside Chick Corea, Anthony Braxton, and Barry Altschul, stood alongside legends like Stan Getz, Hank Jones, Roy Haynes, and Sam Rivers, and provided early opportunities to now leading players like Chris Potter, Kevin and Robin Eubanks, and Steve Coleman. Dave Holland has been at the forefront of jazz in many of its forms since his earliest days. He leads a Grammy-winning big band, an acclaimed quintet, and the Overtone quartet. He is also part of a duo with Kenny Barron and has released a number of important solo recordings.
A world-class soloist, accomplished composer, and formidable bandleader, saxophonist Chris Potter has emerged as a leading light of his generation. DownBeat called him "One of the most studied (and copied) saxophonists on the planet" while JazzTimes identified him as "a figure of international renown." Jazz sax elder statesman Dave Liebman called him simply, "one of the best musicians around," a sentiment shared by the readers of DownBeat in voting him second only to tenor sax great Sonny Rollins in the magazine's 2008 Readers Poll. Potter's impressive discography includes 15 albums as a leader and sideman appearances on over 100 albums. He was nominated for a Grammy for his solo work on "In Vogue," a track from Joanne Brackeen's 1999 album Pink Elephant Magic, and was prominently featured on Steely Dan's Grammy-winning album from 2000, Two Against Nature. He has performed or recorded with many of the leading names in jazz, such as Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, John Scofield, the Mingus Big Band, Jim Hall, Paul Motian, Dave Douglas, Ray Brown and many others. His most recent recording, Ultrahang, is the culmination of five years' work with his Underground quartet with Adam Rogers on guitar, Craig Taborn on Fender Rhodes, and Nate Smith on drums. His penchant for risk taking and genre bending make him ideal for CrossCurrents.
Shankar Mahadevan is among the greatest Indian vocalists alive, having risen to fame in Mumbai's fabled Bollywood film industry as a composer, playback singer, and member of the famed Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy composing team. He sang from his earliest days, but then diverted into a career as a software engineer. In 1998 he ventured into music and released his first album, Breathless (so named because the title song was written as though it was to be sung in one breath). This quickly brought him to the attention of Bollywood, and he soon became the singing voice of every Tamil hero. He won the first of his many awards for his film music with a collaboration with legendary director A.R. Rahman, then won several National Film Awards. As time went on, he found his own compositional voice, and he has since become the leading composer in Indian film music, selling millions of records every year. In 2012 he was invited by UNESCO and the U.S. State Dept. to perform at the United Nations for the finale of the International Jazz Festival. He previously worked with Zakir Hussain as the vocalist for Remember Shakti.
Louiz Banks has been nicknamed the "Godfather of Indian Jazz," and it's appropriate; his commitment and devotion to jazz convinced his father to change his son's name to Louis in honor of the greatest of jazz trumpet players, Louis Armstrong. He began playing music in his homeland of Nepal, but his career accelerated when he settled in Mumbai, where his performance work in night clubs popularized the genre. His work (co-producer, arranger, and pianist) on Miles from India brought his name to great recognition in America, receiving a Grammy nomination. In the same year, he was the featured keyboardist on another Grammy-nominated album, John McLaughlin's Floating Point.
Sanjay Divecha's entire history has seen him pursue a vision of world community as expressed through music, which is in perfect accord with the implicit principles of CrossCurrents. Born in Mumbai, he began his formal musical studies with five years of traditional sitar. At the same time, he was listening to Western folk, blues, jazz, and rock, and eventually settled on the guitar as his primary instrument. Largely self-taught, he decided to expand his horizons and study in America, and in 1987 he landed at the Guitar Institute of Technology in Los Angeles, where he worked with Scott Henderson, Joe Diorio, and Robben Ford. Over 15 years in Los Angeles he recorded and toured with the likes of Angelique Kidjo and Carlos Santana, among many others. He returned to India in 2003 to reconnect with his cultural roots and absorbed Indian folk music from both North (Hindustani) and South (Carnatic) traditions. His album Full Circle, released in 2008, captures that journey.
It is clear that the adventurous spirit of world music exploration is in Gino Banks' (Louiz's son) DNA. He has played with classical greats like Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, Ustad Rashid Khan, Pandit Vikku Vinayakram, Ustad Sabir Khan, and many others. He is a stalwart in the Bollywood Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy film music world. He works regularly with fusion groups like Niladri Kumar's Sitar Funk, Rakesh Chaurasia's RAF, and many others. Rock music is in his world, and he has backed many dance groups. One of his best known efforts was taking part in Bob Belden's Grammy-nominated Miles from India. Gino also teaches, primarily at the True School of Music.
One of India's reigning cultural ambassadors, Zakir Hussain is known worldwide for his brilliant playing - The Washington Post says that "his virtuosity is barely to be believed" - but his innovative collaborations have also made him a chief architect of the contemporary world music movement. Grammy-winning bassist-composer Dave Holland, enjoying his fifth decade as a jazz superstar, was recently classified as "a master bassist and bandleader, and one of the most sophisticated composers and arrangers in the jazz world" by The Boston Globe.
When Hussain and Holland get together to play, they mesh their improvisational genius and musical intuition to pay tribute to pioneering musicians and composers on opposite sides of the world - those artists who first established the longstanding relationship between jazz and India's classical music.
Nick Lowe has made his mark as a producer (Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, Pretenders, The Damned), songwriter of at least three songs you know by heart, short-lived career as a pop star, and a lengthy term as a musicians' musician. But in his current "second act" as a silver-haired, tender-hearted but sharp-tongued singer-songwriter, he has no equal.
Starting with 1995's The Impossible Bird through to 2011's The Old Magic, Nick has turned out a fantastic string of albums, each one devised in his West London home, and recorded with a core of musicians who possess the same veteran savvy. Lowe brings wit and understated excellence to every performance, leading Ben Ratliff of The New York Times to describe his live show as "elegant and nearly devastating." Together, Nick & The Straitjackets have toured extensively around Europe and the United States, and Los Straitjackets back Lowe on his first new music in five years, the EP Tokyo Bay / Crying Inside, on June 15; listen to "Tokyo Bay" here.
Los Straitjackets are the leading practitioners of the lost art of the guitar instrumental. Using the music of the Ventures, The Shadows, and with Link Wray and Dick Dale as a jumping off point, the band has taken their unique, high energy brand of original rock & roll around the world. Clad in their trademark Lucha Libre Mexican wrestling masks, the "Jackets" have delivered their trademark guitar licks to 16 albums, thousands of concerts and dozens of films and TV shows.
The PI Power Trio is Pat Irwin (guitar, electronics), Sasha Dobson (drums, vocals) and Daria Grace (bass, vocals). Irwin was a founding member of the seminal No Wave bands The Raybeats and 8 Eyed Spy; Fader Magazine recently described Irwin as "a pioneer," a term that Rolling Stone also used to describe The Raybeats. Dobson's latest album, Unchained, will be released later in 2018. Grace has been a part of the New York Scene for over 20 years and toured and recorded with avant-rockers God Is My Co-Pilot, pop-noir sextet Melomane, and more.

54 Below, Broadway’s Supper Club, presents Hannah Reimann in Hannah Reimann Sings Joni Mitchell's Blue on Thursday, March 30 at 7pm. Back by popular demand! Celebrating the iconic Joni Mitchell's upcoming 80th birthday later this year and her stunning album Blue, Hannah Reimann (vocals, piano, and dulcimer) and Michele Temple (Pere Ubu, Wicked) first played this renowned album in its entirety in 2012 with their colleagues at The Bitter End, where Mitchell played in the 1960s. Since that time, they have performed over 40 songs from Mitchell’s catalogue from seven albums and continue to add more songs to their repertoire with each performance. What sets their show apart from other Joni Mitchell cover acts is its dedication to playing an authentic concert in the same keys and arrangements as the original studio and live recordings, as well as seeking out great jazz, pop, and Broadway collaborators in New York City who are willing to do the same with them. For the March 30th performance, Blue will be bookended by hits from Mitchell’s other albums including “Both Sides Now,” “Big Yellow Taxi,” “Help Me,” and more. This is one concert no Broadway or folk/pop music lover should miss!
The performance features Reimann (lead vocals, piano & mountain dulcimer) and Temple (guitars), as well as Micah Burgess (School of Rock, Petula Clark) on electric guitar, Scott Chasolen (The Machine Pink Floyd show at BB King’s on Broadway, US tours, Beginnings Chicago tribute, US tours) on keyboards, and Mike Viseglia (Kinky Boots, Suzanne Vega) on bass. The band will also include Mark McClean (drums), Audrey Martells (backing vocals), Rebecca Haviland (backing vocals), and special guest Keith Paine (vocals).
Reimann grew up as a classically-trained musician, but she was also forming rock bands with her teenage friends. "I first discovered Joni Mitchell's music when I was thirteen," says Reimann. "I collected her records and, like many of the women of my generation, memorized the lyrics of those amazing albums: Clouds, Ladies of the Canyon, For the Roses, Court and Spark, Miles of Aisles, and, of course, the classic, Blue. I identified with the longing and courageous honesty in Joni's music and lyrics. In 2011, I sang selections of Mitchell's work on St. Barths while on a three-week engagement there. At that time, my father was growing increasingly ill with a fatal disease. Going through my own blue period, I decided to study and perform the entire album Blue at The Bitter End. It was a powerful and healing experience. Joni Mitchell's music and career continue to inspire and motivate me and I'm blessed to have the opportunity to share the gift of her music as part of a celebration of her long and fruitful life."
This performance is part of Live From 54 Below, a new series featuring streams of live performances direct from Broadway’s Living Room! Designed to make more shows accessible to fans from across the globe and to recreate the live experience, all shows will be presented exclusively at the time of performance with an in-house audience and will not be available on demand afterwards. The livestream for this performance will be available for $25.
