Well, 2011 has come and gone, and what a year it was!  Many standout Furthur shows, including Red Rocks, Madison Square Garden, the Greek, the whole Abbey Road album live... and a New Year's dragon!  Yours truly got to sit in with the Allman Brothers Band at the Beacon and the Everyone Orchestra at the Fillmore, SF.  The John K. Band saw the happy addition of Nathan Graham on drums and Lizzy Friel on vocals, made our first foray outside the DC/Baltimore zone at the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ, and  had some sweet special guest sit-ins by Sanjay Mishra and Trevor Specht (nice YouTube video of Bird Song w/Sanjay & Trevor).  I also debuted some new songs and it looks like more collaborations with lyricist Indi Riverflow will be forthcoming.  There was also a partial reunion of The Mix for a Rex Foundation benefit show, and I began working on a soundtrack recording for an independent documentary film about Walter Pahnke.Whew!  Allright, 2012, what do you have in store?  For starters, a solo acoustic set January 27 at the Ram's Head Live in Baltimore, opening for Crowded Streets (a Dave Matthews Band tribute) with On the Bus and Nayas; the John K. Band will play Iota in Arlington, VA on February 4, the 8x10 in Baltimore on February 10 and our first trip to the Big Apple on February 11 at Sullivan Hall; and an acoustic show with Djesben & friends opening for Ron Holloway & Covered With Jam at Jammin Java in Vienna, VA on March 2.  A few other cool things are in the works... but you'll just have to wait until the next edition of the JK Wireservice!Upcoming Shows:Fri Jan 27 - Rams Head Live - John Kadlecik solo acoustic - tix online20 Market Pl - Baltimore, MD - 21202 - $10 - All agesopening for Crowded Streets (a DMB tribute) + On the Bus & NayasSat Feb 4 - Iota Club & Cafe - The John K. The big announcement is two special Hairball Willie reunion shows in the Chicago area.  It has been 17 years since the last performance of the "classic lineup" of Hairball Willie, and 20 years since work began on Just Defying Gravity, the band's only full-length studio album.  Formally released in June 1993, Just Defying Gravity is now available on Itunes and CDBaby.  Featuring an early version of "Sister Smiles,"  this album was reviewed in Relix Magazine by Mick Skidmore, who declared it "extremely tight and musically inventive."  The May 18 Aurora show is free, but tickets are available online for the May 19 Martyrs' show, which will also feature another reunion of sorts: an opening set by the Dime Store String Band, my old bluegrass group, who I am also looking forward to joining on stage.

In other news, I had the pleasure of co-writing and recording guitar and vocals for a song with Massama Dogo and his afro-funk group, Elikeh, called "Nye Mind Nao," which should be released very soon.  And the John K. Band went into the studio to begin work on "Desert Trance" and "Your Mileage May Vary."  The John K. Band will also be making our first appearance west of the Mississippi in Denver for a three-night run at Quixotes June 8-10.  Also, The Rex Foundation has released most of last December's "Run For the Roses" fundraiser show, and is available for purchase at Nugs.net.

There are also a couple of solo performances on the calendar: a Monday night "off" in the middle of Furthur's Beacon run on April 16th at the Gramercy Theatre opening for Jam Stampede (most likely sitting in with them, as well); and another solo set at a groovy event called The Joy of One-Us on the west front lawn of the US Capitol building on Saturday, June 2nd.

Well, last year was certainly one for the books! The hottest year in recorded history saw the departure from this world of so many beloved artists and performers, and an election cycle that seemed to be lifted from the pages of a Batman comic book… don’t get me started! ;)

But my music world continued growing and evolving in the “post-Furthur” phase of my life. The John Kadlecik Band hit the road hard in 2016, playing 72 shows across the country, including two full west coast tours, and Todd Stoops joined the band in May, playing most of the rest of the year with us. I am sad to bid farewell to Nathan Graham, who is going back to grad school and taking time off from full-time touring in 2017, so JKB will take a brief hiatus from hard touring while we regroup. (literally!)...

The Golden Gate Wingmen, while only playing sporadically (16 shows in 2016), is still active, and we have a run of four shows coming up in February on the east coast. Keep your ears to the ground for more news down the line...

The DC Mystery Cats is my DC-area-only (non-touring) Jerry Garcia Band tribute project, and we played a bunch of shows at Gypsy Sally’s, including another Thanksgiving-eve benefit show for the DC Food Kitchen. I really enjoyed playing those JGB setlists with that great bunch of "cats," and certainly plan for more shows in 2017...

I did a number of fun side-man gigs in 2016, including Phil Lesh & Friends in Las Vegas, Melvin Seals & JGB at the Warfield in San Francisco, Keller Wiliams’ Grateful Gospel at Lockn and New Years Eve, and a return to Venice, Italy for another of Innovative Giving Enhancement’s amazing “Immersion” benefit-parties. But another first-time-played-in-a-new-country event happened last year when I was invited to play with Oteil Burbridge and friends in Costa Rica! And now, as I am writing this, I am in Utah having just played with Oteil, Aron Magner, and Jeff Franca for the Sundance Film Festival in a new project we are calling the Bureau of Sabotage after having just played a wildly fun show at Gypsy Sally’s on January 20th. We are definitely looking forward to more shows popping up in the future… stay tuned! And right on the horizon coming up in the sideman department are two shows just announced with Dead Feat in New Orleans during Jazz fest!

And last, interestingly enough, this past year my solo shows started taking off, and this has become a very fun way to get out in the world and tour. I call my one-man concert “Solo Acousti’lectric,” in part because I can produce a convincing acoustic guitar sound out of my electric guitars, and part because I explore other sounds outside the usual “solo with acoustic guitar” format, and lately I have been having a lot of fun with it. And tonight begins a 7 show solo tour in Salt Lake City at Gracie’s…

The road goes ever on and on… thanks for traveling with me!

Peace, Love, and Art,

-John

Thu, 04/27/2017 - 1:35 pm

After New Orleans, the solo tour resumes, bringing me back to Birmingham, AL after many years and stopping aging in Chattanooga before dropping in to the Grateful for Spring Festival at Mountain Sky in Jermyn, PA.  JKB has a short mid-Atlantic weekend run before the solo tour picks back up in the Pacific Northwest June 1 & 3! June 9 & 10 I am part of two great all-star jams for a Rex Foundation benefit at the Ardmore Music Hall near Philadelphia, and looking ahead, tickets are on sale for 2 Phish afterparty shows with JKB July 25 & 26. The road goes ever on and on, and as always, the best place to get my show info is: johnkmusic.net

Almost 17 years ago, back in 2003, I played my first show with Melvin Seals in Albuquerque, NM and had an absolute blast. I worked on the "Keepers of the Flame" album, and we formed a group called "The Mix" which was actually signed to a recording contract and did a full-length CD release in 2004 called American Spring (still available on Apple Music) and we toured as much as we could between Dark Star Orchestra tours until the scheduling with DSO became too difficult in 2006, and The Mix went on indefinite hiatus. Melvin and I would play sporadically for special occasions in the following years, until this past June when I was asked to fill in as special guest for the remaining shows of 2019.

Today I am pleased and honored to announce that I have been asked and agreed  to join Melvin Seals and JGB as a permanent member!  I have had a wonderful time working with this team over the last few months, and we already have some great shows to announce for 2020, including 4 shows in Hawaii February 12-15 and a full east coast/Midwest tour in March!

Sun, 11/01/2020 - 2:43 pm

We hope you all had as spectacular of an Halloween as possible under the, ah... current circumstances. I'll be doing a special all-Grateful Dead livestream performance tonight on YouTube at 7:15p EST in honor of the "Day of the Dead" and the 50th anniversary of the release of American Beauty!

But I am very glad to finally be looking at 2020 in the rear-view mirror! It has been interesting seeing how different artists have been coping with the pandemic and related restrictions. I have, like everyone of course, had to cancel and reschedule a number of shows and scaled waaaaaay back on touring. Fortunately, I had been working on my Solo Acousti’Lectric show pre-covid and have been able to hang in there doing occasional outdoor events and extremely reduced-capacity indoor events. I have had to rethink how a concert experience works under these circumstances, and as a result I sadly have had to discontinue all the social interactions that used to be typical: no meet & greets, no selfies/signings, and no in-person merchandise sales. This just seems wise to me in the face of being lucky enough to still have live concerts of any kind. Live music is church for many of us, but we should still take precautions.

Internet live-streaming became a whole new rabbit hole for me to wander down, and I have become (I think) fairly decent at broadcast production on my little Linux laptop. Which leads me to this: I cannot begin to share how truly grateful I am at the generosity folks have shown in making donations to help cover costs during this emergency. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU, from the bottom of my heart! I can’t wait to get to the other side of all this, but until then, more YouTube live-stream events will be on the way...

This upcoming year is starting off with several interesting developments. I am teaming up with my old DSO bandmates, Rob Eaton and Rob Barraco, along with Jay Lane, Skip Vangelis and Jake Wolf for a run of shows in Denver and looking forward to that! A couple of Central American destination events have popped up: four nights Solo Acousti’Lectric in Costa Rica at a brand new Grateful Dead themed hotel February 15-20 (send email to [email protected] for package/reservation info) and then Mexico with another all-star “supergroup” featuring Melvin Seals and Rob Eaton again (rescheduled for May 21 & 22 now.) As usual for these times, new shows sometimes pop up on short notice and I will try my best to keep you informed via my website, email blasts, and social media.

It looks like covid restrictions are going to continue a while longer, but the vaccine is rolling out, most people are wearing masks where appropriate and keeping safe social distance, and hopefully by late spring some short tours with bands should start happening again. It will be a challenge for everyone in the live music world, from musicians to clubs and venues to road crews and production staff to publicists and managers. The music touring world that we all had pre-covid took decades to build to where it was, and it will take a while to get it rolling again, even once restrictions are lifted. But everywhere I still see the fire in peoples eyes… music fans, musicians, venue teams… and I believe we will get back truckin’ on, and we will survive!!

Peace, Love & Art!

-John Kadlecik

I just want to let you know how excited I am about the upcoming debut/album release shows coming up for a project I am part of called The Latin Dead! Led by percussionist, Brenden Tacon, and featuring a "who's who" of Latin Jazz (including 4x Grammy-winning keyboardist, Oscar Hernandez) as well as Andy Vargas (Santana) helping me out on co-lead vocals, I think you will dig this mash-up of songs and styles. An album release announcement should be coming soon, and our first three debut performances are just a few weeks away!
