As we celebrate Black History Month, there is an opportunity for us to reflect on the indispensable contributions that African American musicians have made to the world of jazz. From the roots of blues and ragtime, to the swing era, bebop, and beyond, jazz has always been shaped by the talent, creativity, and vision of black artists. From Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, to Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone, these artists have left an indelible mark on the world of music.

New top acts have joined the mega line-up in January.

Grammy-award honoree, Songwriters Hall of Fame member, and BBC Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Don McLean remembers Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, J.P. Richardson – “The Big Bopper” – and the pilot, Roger Peterson on the anniversary of the deadly plane crash just after their concert at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa. The fateful day was coined ‘The Day The Music Died’ by Don McLean in his hit “American Pie.” The song was released in 1971 and spent four weeks at No. 1 in 1972.
