The sound of Anders Beck’s dobro cuts through the crisp October air, animating as it were, the twenty-five-hundred-plus friends gathered here to witness this. Asheville, NC in the fall is, by any measure, a lovely place to be. Gathered down on the banks of the French Broad river, at The Salvage Station, a venue that manages to be somehow both expansive and inclusive, I can’t think of any place I would rather be.

Guitarist, bandleader, and composer Steve Kimock already had an impressively diverse backdrop of music before co-founding KIMOCK, taking a notion from a creative apex following his previous album, the deeply personal and experimental Last Danger of Frost. The veteran multi-genre improvisor admitted in an interview with Grateful Web that he wanted to explore a side his musical self that was lesser seen onstage. His potently cascading compositions have always taken focus, each song is a journey, and the payoff is blissful yet unpredictable.

Amoramora is a traveling, working, multipurpose rock and jazz fusion quartet from Boulder, Colorado. With members from Chicago, Cleveland, Washington D.C., and Boulder, the band formed after crossing paths in 2015 and has been performing, as well as expanding their extensive catalog with original material ever since. After gaining traction amongst the legendary students at the University of Colorado, the group of composers and multi-instrumentalists quickly jumped from packed house parties, to small bars, and then to bigger stages.

Big Head Todd and the Monsters are not that big on anniversaries, so there won’t be any big hoopla over the fact that the band is officially crossing the three-decade mark this year. Thirty years would seem like something to commemorate, especially with the same core lineup, an achievement few other name-brand bands can boast of. Yet right now they’re less about celebrating stability than volatility, in the form of their eleventh studio album, New World Arisin’, which makes good on its forward-facing title with what might be the brashest rock and roll of their career.
