The eclectic band Spafford is constantly pushing the boundaries of improvisation and creativity.  On a stage where Houdini himself performed, Spafford created more magic for the fans who attended either night of the two-night winter tour opening run at historic Broad Brook Opera House.  The first night was highlighted by the high energy originals "Broken Wing">"Walls" which consists of forty-four minutes of musical fun.

Today, groove titans Ghost-Note announced an April 19th release date for their upcoming third album Mustard n’Onions. Led by Snarky Puppy's multi-GRAMMY-winning duo of drummer-keyboardist Robert Sput Searight and percussionist Nate Werth, Mustard n’Onions will be the group’s first new LP in six years, and their debut for Artistry Music/Mack Avenue Music Group.

I could tell you how their set included fun covers like the Rolling Stones’ “No Expectations,” John Hartford's "Granny Wontcha Smoke Some Marijuana," and Jesse Stone’s “Don’t Let Go” (a familiar Jerry Garcia Band tune for many in the audience who sang along with the refrain). I could tell you they picked and fiddled as tight as ever. I could tell you they had a guest fiddler named Coleman Smith and that he and Piccininni had a lot of fun fiddling eye to eye. So much to tell!

Sturgill Simpson and Bob Weir made guest appearances during Orebolo's Friday night set on the opening day of Dead Ahead festival last night. Orebolo is a Goose acoustic side project featuring Rick Mitarotonda, Peter Anspach, and Jeff Arevalo (who plays drums for Goose but is on stand-up bass in this band).

Today, Virginia-based Americana pioneers The Steel Wheels have shared new single/video “Hero” ahead of the February 9 release of Sidewaysvia the band’s own Big Ring Records. The music video features the band performing a playful and contemplative dance routine choreographed by Wagler’s daughter and five of her classmates in the dance & choreography program at Virginia Commonwealth University, all of whom also star in the clip.
