Say She She, the punk-chic discodelic funk trio born in NYC, has released “Disco Life,” the new single from their upcoming album Cut & Rewind (10/3, drink sum wtr). Packed with syncopated rhythms, a bouncing bassline, and soaring harmonies that shimmer over the beat, the song sounds like a full-on Studio 54 soiree. But underneath the glittering groove lies a retelling of the infamous 1979 “Disco Demolition Night,” a publicity stunt turned anti-disco riot in Chicago where thousands of attendees blew up disco records. Much more than just a history lesson, though, “Disco Life” is an indictment against the forces behind the riot - the racism, misogyny, and homophobia that fueled the backlash to a genre created and championed by Black, queer, and femme communities - and a statement on the persistence of those forces more than four decades later.
Say She She elaborated “We wanted to reclaim that space and make it a playing field where all are free. So we turned it into a discodelic dancefloor with our words, and every four on the floor drum beat is hopefully a stitch sewn.”

“Disco Life” is part of Cut & Rewind’s broader mission: delivering urgent, politically charged messages through irresistibly danceable tracks. Earlier this summer, the band released “Under the Sun,” a dreamy, pro-labor anthem inspired by the 2023 Hollywood Writers’ Strike and the power of collective action. Elsewhere on the album, “She Who Dares” imagines a near-future dystopia where women’s rights have been decimated globally, calling for resistance and solidarity. Together, these songs embody Say She She’s belief that music can be a vehicle for protest while also serving as a salve during the most difficult of times.
And beyond its political messages, Cut & Rewind is Say She She’s most sonically expansive work yet. Across its 12 original songs, the band channels progenitors like Minnie Riperton, Rotary Connection, Liquid Liquid, and ESG, while incorporating the spirit of contemporary peers like Lambrini Girls and Amyl and the Sniffers. From whistle tones to sweat-dripping grooves to three-part harmonies capable of opening the heavens, the LP showcases a band at the height of their musical ingenuity.
In just three years since their debut, Say She She - Piya Malik, Sabrina Mileo Cunningham, and Nya Gazelle Brown - have gone from neighbors harmonizing through the floorboards to selling out shows across the US and UK, making their debuts at Glastonbury and Bonnaroo, earning praise from NPR Music (“perfect”), BBC (“going to take over the world”), and KCRW (naming their last album Silver the #1 best of 2023), and performing on CBS Mornings, Later… with Jools Holland, and The Kelly Clarkson Show. They’ve also drawn accolades from icons like Nile Rodgers and Questlove.
The band just concluded a US run of shows, and begin a European tour later this year that will include their biggest show yet - London’s O2 Academy Brixton on Nov 26th.
