The fantastic foursome of Spafford continued their 2024 winter tour this weekend in Pembroke, MA and played to a sold-out crowd on Saturday at the eclectic and award-winning venue, Soundcheck Studios.  Spafford is a regular visitor to this artist-owned and operated location and delivered yet another night of creative magic to a packed house.

These are just a few of the items I saw last Thursday night at the Jim Irsay collection at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Jim Irsay, owner of the Indianapolis Colts, has amassed an incredible assortment of relics that would make Indiana Jones blush.

The eclectic band Spafford is constantly pushing the boundaries of improvisation and creativity.  On a stage where Houdini himself performed, Spafford created more magic for the fans who attended either night of the two-night winter tour opening run at historic Broad Brook Opera House.  The first night was highlighted by the high energy originals "Broken Wing">"Walls" which consists of forty-four minutes of musical fun.

When you come from Bolton, Mississippi (pop. 567), the blues is in your DNA. Indeed, it’s the same place that gave the world Charley Patton, Bo Carter, Sam Chatmon and others who, it could be argued, established the blues as a distinct genre during the early part of the 20th century. The spirit of those artists—along with more recent practitioners such as R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough and Jimmy “Duck” Holmes—is ingrained in the sound of Robert Connely Farr.

Today, groove titans Ghost-Note announced an April 19th release date for their upcoming third album Mustard n’Onions. Led by Snarky Puppy's multi-GRAMMY-winning duo of drummer-keyboardist Robert Sput Searight and percussionist Nate Werth, Mustard n’Onions will be the group’s first new LP in six years, and their debut for Artistry Music/Mack Avenue Music Group.

Guitarist and composer Phil Sargent is a name to be reckoned with in the Boston and New York music scenes.

I could tell you how their set included fun covers like the Rolling Stones’ “No Expectations,” John Hartford's "Granny Wontcha Smoke Some Marijuana," and Jesse Stone’s “Don’t Let Go” (a familiar Jerry Garcia Band tune for many in the audience who sang along with the refrain). I could tell you they picked and fiddled as tight as ever. I could tell you they had a guest fiddler named Coleman Smith and that he and Piccininni had a lot of fun fiddling eye to eye.
