Cole Quest and the City Pickers
Carrying forward Woody Guthrie’s legacy while blazing a fresh New York trail, Cole Quest & the City Pickers will celebrate the July 18 release of their new album Homegrown (Jalopy Records) with two free, outdoor New York City concerts: June 10 on the plaza of The Metropolitan Museum of Art (5th Ave. at 82nd St.) and June 21 as the 5 p.m. headliner on Governor’s Island’s Cowboy Seahorse stage at the Porch Stomp Festival.
On July 18, Jalopy Records will release Homegrown, the eagerly awaited new album from Cole Quest & The City Pickers – the folk-bluegrass ensemble led by Woody Guthrie’s grandson. Self-described as “roots music for the modern city,” Homegrown fuses three classic Guthrie compositions with richly wrought originals by Quest and select gems from the broader American songbook.
Cole Quest & the City Pickers trace a direct line from Woody Guthrie’s Dust Bowl ballads to the bustling streets of New York City on their richly imagined new album, Homegrown (Jalopy Records, July 18). Led by Woody’s grandson, Cole Quest, this ensemble distills the hearty spirit of folk and bluegrass while carving out its own contemporary voice.
Cole Quest and the City Pickers are a group of New York City musicians connected by friendship and a love of bluegrass. Quest, grandson of the folk icon Woody Guthrie, has brought together a collection of eclectic pickers who have gained recognition on the local scene. Performing both Quest's original tunes as well as traditional favorites, the City Pickers bring their special brand of high-spirited talent to the stage, with up-beat, knee-slapping energy and a high-lonesome sound that’ll leave you wanting more.
