Grateful Dead

Duane Allman—a name that reverberates through the hollows and hills of rock and roll, a soul whose fingers danced and spoke on the frets of life itself. Today, on November 20th, we at Grateful Dead celebrate the birthday of a man whose playing wasn't just technical mastery; it was a genuine expression of a restless, radiant spirit, a luminary who sought not the spotlight but the sweet harmony of souls communing together in music.

Join us for an extraordinary evening of music, history, and celebration at The Closing of Winterland—a rare screening commemorating the legendary Grateful Dead concert that marked the final performance at San Francisco’s Winterland Arena. This special event, hosted by Bob Barsotti of the Bill Graham Memorial Foundation, promises to bring the magic of New Year’s Eve 1978 back to life.

Bill Graham’s famous observation in the 1970s about The Grateful Dead was certainly true at the time. In hindsight today, roughly fifty years after Graham’s renowned declaration (it’s difficult to pin down exactly when he said it), both the insinuation of the Dead’s supremacy and the certainty of their exclusivity are debatable.

The Livery, Benton Harbor’s premier live music venue, is known for hosting the best holiday events. This Halloween was set to be a live Dead party featuring South Bend’s own Grateful Dead cover band, the Happy Campers. However, the untimely passing of Phil Lesh transformed the celebration into a heartfelt farewell to honor his legacy.

In the swirling, technicolor maelstrom that was Haight-Ashbury, there was a bassline. It wasn’t just any bassline, mind you. It was Phil Lesh’s—an intricate, weaving, electrified pulse that felt more like the heartbeat of the universe than just another instrument in a band. Now that pulse, that cosmic conductor, has drifted into the great unknown.
