It all started in a Newark, NJ bar, as all great stories do. Rob Fragnito approached Pat Nini if he played music all because of his long hair. And sometimes, stereotypes are correct. Shortly after their first jam session Moon Rabbit Retreat was born. As this rock duo, the pair released their debut EP, Watering Hole.

Known for their live performances, The Good Bad are a mainstay in the Northern Californian Bluegrass scene since 2010. On their label debut the band have delivered two heartfelt tracks as part of Dutch Records singles series that showcases music from bands they love. Labeling The Good Bad as Bluegrass would not give credit to the unique tones, blends of genres and vibe that puts them into a category of their own.

Poetry pours out of John Mailander’s version of Joni Mitchell’s Borderline. The sounds of dripping water, flowing rivers, messy spills, puddles, and pools of wet boggy mashes give way to tubs of bubbles, sunsets, and endless horizons, skies as wide as infinite while nothing is certain or definite. The cinnamon shades of grey Mailander consistently portray pours a warm cup of tea in your earworm. Kristina Train’s vocals creep into the melody like a song in slumber.

The Montana based group Satsang has just released “This Place (featuring Trevor Hall),” the second single from their breathtaking new album, ‘All. Right. Now.’ (out June 4th). “This Place” forms the emotional core of the new album, which finds frontman Drew McManus reconnecting with his Montana roots and exploring a whole new palette of sounds, inspired by the wide-open fields and soaring mountains of their home state.

Jesse Lynn Madera, a Nashville-based singer/songwriter, has released an-old favorite off of her critically-acclaimed album Fortunes with a brand-new twist. Madera stripped back the original version of “Dante” to feature only her soulful vocals and piano playing. The lyrics and emotion shine through even more powerfully than before.

This past year has been a challenging one for everyone across the globe.  The music industry has been hit especially hard with small venues closing, touring musicians unable to perform and uncertainty around when the concert industry will be able to open back up again. Despite this, musicians are still creating and writing new material and many folks – professional musicians and those who just enjoy playing – have spent time during quarantine devoted to becoming more proficient or learning a new instrument altogether.

Born in Louisiana but living in Baltimore, MD, Miles Gannett is making us rethink what it means to be an Americana artist. This rethinking is good.
