Ghost Gnotes (pronounced Ghost neeyotes), the nom-de-plume of Denver, CO musician Luke Mossman (Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats) releases “Takes Some Time,” the first single from his debut self-titled album, out May 29th, 2020. Premiering with American Songwriter earlier this week, they describe the emotive single, “[‘Takes Some Time’] sways in delicate instrumentation and echoes, mirroring all its emotional waves.”

“Takes Some Time” is available now via all digital service providers, here

A song of transition, Mossman wrote “Takes Some Time” to process the complications in his relationship after his girlfriend unexpectedly decided to move out after years of living together. Mossman explains, “We were still planning to stay together, but obviously there was something in the air. And this song was an attempt to negotiate these feelings into something I could process. Trying to prepare myself for a reckoning and wondering if this was a path to growth, or something just the opposite.” “Takes Some Time” serves as the catalyst of the album’s themes - of Mossman’s introspection and a sort of therapy to help understand the pain and underlying beauty to be found in loneliness.

Mossman, who has spent much of the past 5 years touring the world as the lead guitarist with Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, devoted his quiet, fleeting moments off the road to writing and recording deeply personal music of his own. These songs, which at first felt too personal to share, came together to create the serene, often haunting, collection of songs featured on Ghost Gnotes debut album.

The self-titled album was produced by Brian Joseph (Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, Local Natives) – a longtime friend of Mossman. Joseph got wind of Mossman’s writing, and invited him to come to Eau Claire, WI so they could work on the record together. Joseph describes, “Luke is as strange as he is gifted. Often lost in thought, there is a quiet charm in knowing him and in seeing him drag a song into light.”  He continues, “This album is a slowly drifting boat, headed down the river in a still dark. It is a moment where your breath hangs long in the cold air before sinking to the top of the water, and just out of reach is the bloated moon all orange and golden. Luke exists fully inside this music, and it's discovery.”

Set for release on May 29th, 2020, Ghost Gnotes album is available to pre-save now. Additionally, the album is now available to pre-order on 180-gram black vinyl, here.

Additionally, the event will feature an exclusive Conversation with Bob Weir & John Hickenlooper and an intercontinental Conversation with Nathaniel Rateliff and Marcus Mumford.

People across the world can tune into the three-hour event to watch performances and storytelling by musicians, crew members, industry members, and Colorado personalities. The full three-hours will be live-streamed and aired on 97.3 KBCOCBSN Denver and on Youtube. Additionally, the first hour, from 6:00 to 7:00 PM, will be broadcast on CBS Denver. Bret Saunders, Morning Show host for 97.3 KBCO and Jim Benemann, CBS4 anchorman, will host the event. More information and details on how to watch can be found on the CMRF website [comusicrelief.org].

The necessary health and safety measures put in place to protect against the spread of COVID-19 means the suspension of operations at the center of the music scene — pausing tours and live performances. For an industry that relies on events and public gatherings, the impact has been devastating. The resulting economic distress will continue to place strain on all those in the industry who face uncertainty in regards to reopening, employment, and financial security. The Colorado Music Relief Fund was created in partnership with the State of Colorado and Colorado Creative Industries to generate much-needed relief funds to help all those in the Colorado music industry affected by COVID-19.

CMRF is a collaborative effort across sectors, with steering committee members from 7S Management, Anchor Point Foundation, The Bee Vradenburg Foundation, The Bohemian Foundation, Colorado Creative Industries - Division of OEDIT, Colorado Music Hall of Fame, Colorado State University, Energize Colorado, KBCO, KSUT, The Marigold Project,  RedLine, and more.

“Coloradans have a history of coming together during times of crisis, and now more than ever, we are looking toward music and art to find comfort during this difficult time,” said Governor Jared Polis,  “Colorado’s music industry and rich pool of talent is an important part of our culture, economy, and the Colorado way of life. I can’t wait for the day when we can all return to one of Colorado’s excellent music venues to see our favorite bands play live again. But until then, I’m excited that the state can partner with the Colorado Music Relief Fund in this effort.”

The partnership with the State of Colorado, Colorado Creative Industries, and Energize Colorado demonstrates the central role live music plays in Colorado’s culture, character, and economy. Generating over $1.5 billion of annual revenue and employing over 16,000 Coloradans — it is a force in the economy of experiences — attracting tourists, new residents, and business leaders to Colorado for its ‘good times’ culture. Our musicians, their crews, and our venues are iconic and beloved across the world.

Breckenridge Brewery, the event's sponsor, has a deep connection to the Colorado music scene, frequently hosting concerts at its brewery in Littleton over the past few years. In addition to sponsoring the virtual experience, Breckenridge Brewery has pledged to match up to $50,000 in Colorado Music Relief Fund donations to help support those who’ve been impacted by COVID-19 in the Colorado music industry.

“After years of working closely with Colorado’s talented music industry workers, we are grateful for this opportunity to give back to them during these challenging times," said Todd Usry, President of Breckenridge Brewery. “We teamed up to help bring this virtual concert to life and wanted to make an additional commitment by matching donations. Those in the Colorado music industry have given us so many memorable experiences by entertaining guests and our team at The Farm House, and we look forward to the day we can all come together again over a beer and live music.”

“Our crew is the lifeblood of our touring operation,” said musician, Nathaniel Rateliff, “living and working together over the years, we have become family. I am glad to do whatever I can to support our music community right now, and the CMRF is a lifeline to so many in our state.”

The Colorado Music Relief Fund was created to support all of those who help bring music to our lives — host of talented and dedicated individuals, crews, and businesses working on stage and behind the scenes. CMRF will continue to raise funds and provide a steady stream of high-quality events to support the Colorado music community. While it cannot replace the feeling of a live show, this will sustain the audience and bolster our spirits.

On Saturday, May 30, 2020, The Colorado Music Relief Fund (CMRF) launched with a virtual event, ‘Banding Together: A Concert for the Colorado Music Relief Fund,’ presented by Breckenridge Brewery. With an all-star lineup of performances from iconic locations across Colorado and beyond, the CMRF is proud to reveal that the ‘Banding Together’ launch concert raised over $625,000 and counting in much-needed relief funds to help all those in the Colorado music industry affected by COVID-19. The Colorado Music Relief Fund Auction is accepting bids through June 5th, here.

The concert, which originally aired on 97.3 KBCOCBSN Denver and on Youtube, featured an incredible lineup of performances from musicians from across the State performing from iconic Colorado locations unlike seen before. Opening the show with an emotional and poignant performance of “Time Stands,” in an empty Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Nathaniel Rateliff graciously set the tone for the evening, stating, “A lot of this goes to the people you don’t see behind the scenes. And this has been a pretty difficult time for us in our industry but it’s a difficult time for us all around the world. Hopefully, this will lighten some of the burden. To those of who you stuck at home we love you and miss you and we wish you well."

Honoring the frontline medical workers battling Covid-19 every day in Colorado, Todd Park Mohr of Big Head Todd & The Monsters performed on top of Denver Health Hospital, surrounded by doctors and nurses. Paul Hoffman from Greensky Bluegrass performed from the legendary Caribou Ranch in stunning Nederland, CO, while The Lumineers closed the first hour of the show with a stirring performance of their hit song “Stubborn Love” inside an empty Empower Field at Mile High Stadium. Additionally, a selection of Colorado’s most beloved national and international artists performed in support of CMRF, expressing their gratitude and love for the State and our passionate music fans, incredible venues, and vibrant music industry. The ‘Banding Together’ launch concert concluded with “The Colorado Encore” featuring outstanding performances from Colorado musicians Inaiah Lujan, Gabrielle Louise, The Reminders, Austin Young Band, and The Still Tide. The entire concert is available to watch, here.

Colorado Music Relief Fund founder and show producer Chris Tetzeli shares, "From all four corners and in between, the music industry of Colorado came together to pull this off. As it is with concerts it was the people behind the scenes, the very people the fund was set up for, that made this show happen. Most notably, Brown Note Productions and No Coast TV were heroic in producing the event and the webcast. Scott Arbough and Walt Dehaven from KBCO and CBS4 were incredible partners. We hope this will be helpful for everyone who makes Colorado’s music scene so magical.”

Scott Arbough of KBCO commented, "KBCO has enjoyed a partnership for many years with nearly all of the musicians who performed, most from the early days of their careers.  It was so rewarding to see them all join together to support the Colorado music community in such a generous way. I am grateful for the encouragement from Governor Jared Polis, Chris Tetzeli and his staff at 7s Management, the dedicated staff at CBS4 and KBCO, and everyone behind the scenes that donated their time to bring Banding Together to life. Most of all thank you to the music fans who stepped up to help those who bring live music to Colorado."

Shulman Smith, the Rocky Mountain troubadour, has unveiled “Mineral King,” the first single from his debut album Way Out West, due out later this year. Available now on all digital service providers, here, Smith has also released the stunning video for “Mineral King” in partnership with the Sequoia Parks Conservancy.  Filmed on land that was badly damaged by the wildfires of 2020, Smith intends to raise awareness for the park and the challenges it faces. Watch/embed the “Mineral King” video here.

Smith, who grew up in Denver, CO, spent much of his youth surrounded by the expansive natural landscapes of the Rocky Mountains - driving in and out of the many mountain passes, hiking to hidden mountain lakes, and embracing the viewpoints that sprinkle the front range - while his imagination transported him to the storied past of the Rocky Mountains and its inhabitants, sparking a lifetime of inspiration. As an adult whose life brought him further West from Colorado to California, Smith found parallel inspiration in the mountains along Highway 395 on the East side of the state: driving beside mountains that held such promise for new settlers - holding complex stories of plunder, preservation, and competing human interests. It was the culmination of a lifetime of mountain folklore that brought “Mineral King” into focus.

“I first heard of the Mineral King Valley in Sequoia National Park from a friend who had trekked the John Muir Trail and was spellbound by the valley. I was struck by how the place sounded like a person, and it became so easy to see her – her conflicts, her desires,” Smith explains.  “There are many Western stories hidden in the verses of ‘Mineral King,’ but a clear thread is the feeling of helplessness that can arise from confronting the impacts of climate change. I took this feeling as an opportunity to reach beyond myself and to collaborate with others to alleviate that helplessness.”

At the time, catastrophic wildfires were raging across the Western US, including Sequoia National Park, endangering its unique ecosystems. Whereas low intensity fires have been proven to be a healthy requirement for giant sequoia life cycles, these fires were much different. Smith began working with Big Land Films to conceptualize a video in support of the park. Smith reached out to dancer Daisy Jacobson, who he had previously seen in a performance by the Los Angeles Dance Project, and she proved to be very enthusiastic about choreographing and performing in the “Mineral King” video. Filmed on land ravished by the fires, Smith is hopeful the creative collaboration between the music, video, and dance of “Mineral King” will help engage people to move beyond the feeling of helplessness concerning protecting our natural resources. In conjunction with the release of “Mineral King,” Smith has launched a fundraiser to benefit Sequoia Parks Conservancy. Funds will be used for scientific research, fire mitigation, and giant sequoia protection. Please click here to contribute and stay tuned for more information on creative collaborations between Shulman Smith and Sequoia National Park, to be announced soon.

Shulman Smith, a child of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, made his way further west to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he studied and pursued a variety of interests including instrument building, photography, painting, engineering - always with one eye kept on songwriting. Eventually making his way from the Bay Area to Los Angeles, and after years spent engineering for other musicians while putting his own musical aspirations on hold, Smith Shulman reconnected with fellow Coloradoan musician Joshua Lopez (Will.i.am, Macy Gray). Lopez would go on to produce and perform on Way Out West with Smith. In the summer of 2020, as the world changed before their eyes, an all-star band came together to record Shulman Smith’s songs, his dreamy view of the American West and her stories. The Way Out West band includes Jay Bellerose (Willy Nelson, Ray LaMontagne, Rosanne Cash) on drums, Rich Hinman (Tanya Tucker, Molly Tuttle, Sara Bareilles) on pedal steel, Adam MacDougall (Circles Around the Sun, The Black Crowes) on piano, Kaveh Rastegar (Bruce Springsteen, Beck, John Legend) on upright bass, and Gabe Witcher (Punch Brothers) on violin. Mixed by Tucker Martine (My Morning Jacket, The Decemberists, Hiss Golden Messenger), and mastered by Emily Lazar (HAIM, Maggie Rogers, Vampire Weekend), the Rocky Mountain singer pulls us through a kaleidoscopic trip of wooded guitars, shimmering pedal steel, and saloon piano on his mystical debut album. Way Out West is set for release Summer 2021.

Mon, 03/15/2021 - 3:22 pm

Today, Shulman Smith releases the title track from his upcoming debut album, Way Out West. The song is available now on all digital service providers now, here. Additionally, Smith has revealed the accompanying video for “Way Out West”, set amidst the 1858 Pikes Peak Gold Rush. The video is an homage to classic Spaghetti Westerns, silent film, and quintessential Rocky Mountain imagery pulled from Smith’s Colorado upbringing. Watch/embed the video for “Way Out West”.

“Way Out West,” tells Smith’s personal story through the historical metaphor of the Gold Rush. The video leans into the past, toying with the gold rush story and how it reinvents itself for every new era in the American West. For the video, Smith partnered with his fiancée, producer Lauren Opatowski, who also sings background vocals in the recording. Their own struggle between home and opportunity is told through the lens of history.

“Traveling back in time allows me to find a voice for melodies and stories and for me, that's in Colorado,” Smith states. “All that Rocky Mountain history: abandoned mines, played-out creeks, and railroad tracks leading into the foothills; they are natural sources of inspiration. So I read the history to envelop myself in the stories: villains, greed, violence, hope, hard times, high times. The American experience of the 19th century repeats itself. These stories teach lessons, but they are also fun – I wanted to transport listeners back in time. The video itself is a time traveler: silent film, Spaghetti Western, and the early gold rush days. The clearer we see our past, the clearer we can see our present.”

Recently, Shuman Smith released the first single and video from Way Out West, “Mineral King.” Smith partnered with the Sequoia Parks Conservancy to release the video and raise awareness for the park and the challenges it faces. The video, which features dancer Daisy Jacobson and filmed on land badly damaged by the wildfires of 2020, illustrates the creative collaboration between the music, video, and dance to help engage people to move beyond the feeling of helplessness concerning protecting our natural resources. “Mineral King” now has over 132K views and Smith’s fundraiser benefitting the Sequoia Parks Conservancy has raised almost $10,000 for scientific research, fire mitigation, and giant sequoia protection. Please click here to contribute and stay tuned for more information on creative collaborations between Shulman Smith and Sequoia National Park, to be announced soon.

The Way Out West band includes Blair Sinta (Alanis Morissette, Melissa Etheridge) on drums, Rich Hinman (Tanya Tucker, Molly Tuttle, Sara Bareilles) on pedal steel, Adam MacDougall (Circles Around the Sun, The Black Crowes) on piano, Kaveh Rastegar (Bruce Springsteen, Beck, John Legend) on upright bass, and Gabe Witcher (Punch Brothers) on violin. Way Out West is set for release Summer 2021.

Electric Forest (EF) has revealed the return of its slate of fan participation opportunities, known as Plug In Programs, for the sold-out music and arts festival from June 23-26, 2022 in Rothbury, MI.

Heralded for fully embracing the possibilities of an engaged festival community, Electric Forest’s Plug In Programs deliberately blur the line between event organizers and attendees. With over 16 programs designed to build community and encourage collaboration with EF’s production teams, the 2022 Plug In Program offers a variety of ways for fans to contribute, participate in, and ultimately help shape the Electric Forest experience, while earning wristbands to the sold-out festival.

The different avenues that fans can take to Plug In to EF2022 are vast, with opportunities for designers, artists, musicians, content creators, builders, teachers, party planners, movement-based performers, dreamers, imaginators, and everything in between.

Often described as “magical,” “whimsical,” and “inspiring,” Electric Forest’s art installations are integral to the EF experience. The Art Installation Sponsorship Program, now in its 9th year, is an opportunity for artists to contribute to an unforgettable environment. Artists can submit their wildest and most ambitious Art Installation ideas for a chance to build and display their work at Electric Forest. If selected, the artist and their team receive a grant to help make their vision a reality, working credentials to the festival, and are provided support, resources, and guidance from the Electric Forest production team.

The Brainery Workshops invite passionate minds with teachable skills to connect with their fellow Forest Family by sharing their knowledge through workshops during the festival. Instructors are encouraged to apply and will be awarded with wristbands to the festival, a featured workshop, and more. Previous Brainery Workshops have included different forms of meditation practices, beatboxing classes, dance and art workshops, a Pride Parade celebrating inclusivity and love in the EF community, and much more.

Re-imagined in 2022 is the UnMEDIAted Creator Incubator. Perfect for all types of creators - from photographers and videographers, to TikTokers, YouTubers, Twitch all-stars, digital artists, podcasters, and more - the UnMEDIAted Creator Incubator is the place for storytelling and collaboration. Creators who submit winning proposals will receive working wristbands to the festival, land a spot on the official EF Creative Media team, and work with and alongside fellow creatives to tell the ultimate EF stories.

The Wish Machine, which was first introduced in 2018, invites fans to commit to spreading positivity throughout the year. In return, EF HQ rewards a lucky handful by supporting their wildest Electric Forest dreams coming true. To date, over 7,000 wishes have been submitted to The Wish Machine, with a collective 8,500+ volunteer hours pledged across 5 continents and all 50 states, and over $300,000 offered to community improvements and charities around the world. In return, EF has granted a variety of wishes to the Forest Family, including one-of-a-kind on-site experiences, performance slots, festival wristbands, and much more. Learn about past wishes granted here, and submit to the EF2022 Wish Machine here.

The Art Installation Sponsorship, Brainery Workshops, UnMEDIAted Creator Incubator, and Wish Machine are just a selection of the Plug In Program’s offerings. Additional programs that are currently accepting submissions include: The Sticker Design Contest, The Movement Performer Plug In, Chapel Parties for the People, Prize Cart Remix Contest, and the FanStaff Program. More programs will open soon, and will be announced here, or join the new Electric Forest Plug In Facebook group to connect with others who want to Plug In and stay up to date with further program announcements.

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats are set to play three intimate shows at Denver’s legendary Skylark Lounge (140 S. Broadway, Denver, CO 80209) on April 12th, 13th, and 14th, 2022. The shows will benefit Rateliff’s foundation The Marigold Project with all proceeds going to the foundation. Rateliff and his fellow band members have lived, and still live in, the Baker neighborhood which houses the Skylark. When the bar came up for sale a year ago, they were determined to save it from closing and being turned into new development. So, they led the charge and put a team of investors together to purchase the property and business. Now, the bar is run by owner/GM Bob Ashby, a lifelong friend of Rateliff and Joseph Pope III.

The Skylark Lounge now features a gorgeous music room upstairs that can hold 120 people per night. The room’s future programming is to include music, as well as comedy, dance nights, and community events.

Tickets for the upcoming benefit shows are $50 and are available here through a lottery system. In an effort to deter scalpers and bots, presale tickets will launch through an open request period. Ticket orders have a cap of 2 tickets. The lottery opens at 10 am MT on Monday, April 11th, and ends at 11:59 pm on April 11th. Notifications for whether you received tickets or not will be sent from Seated Ticketing at 10 am MT on Tuesday, April 12th. Tickets are non-transferable and winners will need to show their ID and credit card at the venue to receive a wristband for entry to the upstairs music room for the show.

The newly reopened Skylark Lounge in Denver, CO, hosted Skylark owners Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats for three frenetic concerts, April 12-14th, to benefit Rateliff’s foundation The Marigold Project. Together over the residency, $36,500 was raised for the foundation. Each night, 175 people witnessed a blistering show from Denver’s own band, whose next hometown shows are two sold-out nights at Red Rocks in August. On Tuesday and Wednesday night, comedian Josh Blue (3rd place winner on America’s Got Talent 2021), and Skylark co-owner, surprised the crowd with a comedy set before the Night Sweats performed.

Rateliff and his fellow band members have lived, and still live in, the Baker neighborhood which houses the Skylark. When the bar came up for sale a year ago, they were determined to save it from closing and being turned into new development. The band members are all owners of the classic Denver South Broadway bar which now serves as a music, comedy, and event venue in its revamped upstairs Bobcat Lounge. The Bobcat name is a nod to Rateliff’s and bassist Joseph Pope III’s lifelong friend Bob Ashby who runs the Skylark.

Downstairs, the Skylark Lounge features its historic horseshoe bar, booth and barstool seating, and photo booth. Upstairs, Bobcat Lounge is busy supporting both local music and national touring acts, comedians, DJs, drag nights, art shows, and much more. With the spirit of community building in mind, the aforementioned Marigold Project hosts a monthly Sunday afternoon Community Conversation at the Bobcat Lounge featuring national guests. The outside of The Skylark has also received a facelift with brand new awnings for the patio that rings the building. As part of the renovations, Gregg Deal painted a stunning mural on the south side of the building.

The Marigold Project was founded by Nathaniel Rateliff in 2017. The Marigold Project is a foundation that supports community and nonprofit organizations working on issues of racial, social, and economic justice.
