Blues Traveler today announced the release of their new studio album Traveler’s Blues on Round Hill Records, a collection of re-imagined and re-charged classics from The American Blues Songbook, set for release on July 30, 2021. In addition, two singles “Funky Bitch” and “Ball & Chain” (feat. Christone “Kingfish” Ingram) will be released today, June 7th.

Now, Blues Traveler are taking a leap forward on their fourteenth full-length album, Traveler’s Blues (Round Hill Records). This time around, the quintet—John Popper (vocals, harmonica), Chan Kinchla (guitar), Tad Kinchla (bass), Ben Wilson (keyboards) and Brendan Hill (drums), along with a few guests have made the record they were always meant to make, an eleven-song album… something old, something new, something borrowed and something blues.

Blues Traveler burst onto the scene in 1987 and hit the ground running with a trio of gold-selling albums—Blues Traveler (1990), Travelers and Thieves (1991) and Save His Soul (1993). Their next album Four (1994) went six-times platinum and spawned the definitive “Run-Around,” which garnered a GRAMMY® Award in the category of “Best Rock Performance By a Duo or Group.” The band logged another platinum album with Straight On Till Morning in 1998 and spent the next twenty years selling out shows on multiple continents before releasing Hurry Up & Hang Around in 2018.

“Back in the day, we were all into blues,” says Chan. “We even started as a high school blues band. That’s why our name is Blues Traveler! So, it was fun to come full circle and really get back to blues more than we’d ever planned. It took a lifetime for us to play this style well. There’s no way we could’ve pulled off this album when we were younger. After thirty years, we finally made the record we aspired to make as kids.”

Retreating to Nashville in late 2020, they reteamed with GRAMMY® Award-winning producer Matt Rollings (Willie Nelson) and rather than overthink anything or over prepare, they dove right into the deep end.

“We went in there and knocked it out,” Chan recalls. “If you overproduce blues, it sounds like shit. Blues is supposed to feel alive. We wanted to keep it raw and immediate. We had a solid start, so we just had to capture the moment. On our first album Blues Traveler in 1989, we knew those songs cold from playing them in bars for years. That’s probably the last time we came in that organized. We’d never done anything like this before. This was like doing standards. We weren’t trying to cover the way the artists had done the songs; we were trying to make them our own.”

That’s exactly what they did. A swaying twelve-bar blues progression holds down Jimmy Reed’s “You Got Me Runnin’” (feat. Crystal Bowersox) as harmonica and piano entwine. Swaggering piano struts through tambourine on the Mississippi Sheiks’ staple “Sittin’ On Top of the World” (feat. Warren Haynes) before Popper and Warren trade verses, and Chan and Warren trade licks.

“It’s an old blues song, but we brought a modern jam vibe to it,” he continues. “We’ve known Warren since 1990 when we opened up for The Allman Brothers. We’ve played with him in various ways for three decades. He’s an amazing musician and a wonderful guy. It’s cool we’re still rocking together after all these years.”

Then, there’s their take on the Gnarls Barkley smash “Crazy” (feat. Rita Wilson & John Scofield). As the beat simmers, Popper leans into the iconic lyrics with palpable charisma before Scofield rips a lead and Rita delivers a powerhouse counter-vocal. On Son Seals’ “Funky Bitch,” they dive into a fluid jam and proudly “Let our Blues Traveler flag fly,” according to Chan. “Roadhouse Blues” serves as a raucous Doors tribute and revs up as a “cool harmonica vehicle.” Meanwhile, “Need Your Love So Bad”—originally made famous by Little Willie John—brings them into new territory altogether, while “Trouble in Mind” (feat. Keb’ Mo) which dates back to the 1920s but has been recorded by everyone from Johnny Cash to Nina Simone, concludes with a scorching soul duet uplifted by bass-y piano, lyrical soloing, and vibrant harmonica.

Pre-Order Traveler’s Blues Album

Other songs on the album include “Tore Down,” “Call Me The Breeze,” and the single “Ball & Chain.”

“Blues Traveler is not just a band; it’s a lifestyle,” Chan leaves off. “Blues Traveler is our life’s work. It’s enabled us to do so many other things. This little tribe we built in New York during the late eighties has survived all the way through—plus or minus some dearly departed brothers and sisters. It’s empowered us to be creative, make people happy and travel around spreading some good vibes. The longer we do it, the more we like it. Now, people know we can actually play the fucking blues too.”

Legendary and eternally hipster U.K. band Squeeze (whose founding members Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook have been compared to the likes of John Lennon and Paul McCartney as songwriters and performers), are set to begin the U.S. leg of  their 24-date Nomadband tour on August 1st . The group’s headlining schedule will be interspersed with 18 support dates for Daryl Hall & John Oates and will continue throughout the summer into early fall 2021.

Squeeze will begin their Nomadband tour at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium before joining Hall & Oates for their first date on August 5 at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield, MA (with KT Tunstall.) The band’s final headlining show in the U.S. will be on October 7th at the Moda Center in Portland, OR.

“I'm so excited to be back on stage and in the thick of our wonderful set list of songs,” said Chris Difford. “Seeing an audience again will be inspiring and emotional, it’s been too long.”

Adds Glenn Tilbrook: “I think this is my most anticipated U.S. tour since our first in 1978.  Our great band is just getting greater and we are also welcoming Owen Biddle, who joins us from Nashville. Can’t wait to see you!

Squeeze’s debut self-titled album was released by A&M in 1978 (after a three-song EP) at the height of the punk revolution, but its pop songwriting hooks and melodies hark back to the ‘60s British Invasion.  That album included the track, “Take Me I’m Yours,” followed by a cadre of   hits on the UK charts including “Cool for Cats,” “Up the Junction,” “Pulling Mussels From A Shell,” “Black Coffee in Bed” and “Labeled With Love.”  Squeeze’s hits “Tempted,” “Hourglass” and “853-5937” (from East Side Story) made their mark in the U.S. in 1981.

Squeeze disbanded in 1999 and reunited in 2007, releasing three new albums since then (2010’s Spot the Difference, 2015’s Cradle to the Grave and 2017’s The Knowledge,) as well as various solo projects from both Chris and Glenn. Aside from Difford and Tilbrook, Squeeze now features keyboardist Stephen Lange and drummer Simon Hanson (since 2007,) percussionist/back-up singer Steve Smith (vocalist for house music group Dirty Vegas) along with pedal/lap steel guitarist Melvin Duffy (who joined them for the 2019 tour) and Owen Biddle, former bassist for The Roots.

The band’s “Squeeze Songbook 2019” tour featured opening acts like KT Tunstall, They Might Be Giants, X, Marshall Crenshaw, the Mavericks and Leon Tilbrook in selected cities and was widely praised by critics.  Two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foo Fighters founder Dave Grohl even joined the band at the Bourbon & Beyond Festival in Louisville in September 2019 to perform percussion on “Black Coffee in Bed.”

Multi-platinum selling and 4-time Grammy nominated saxophone player Boney James is on the road, performing for fans across the U.S and resuming his delayed 2020 tour dates in support of  his recently released album Solid.

As an added treat, Boney released a new single “Sundance” on August 17th and debuted new merchandise via his website!

“I am so thrilled to be getting on the road and playing shows live and in person again and can’t wait to see everyone out there and share some new music from my Solid CD.” Boney James

Despite the challenge of  dropping the record during the COVID-19 pandemic, Boney notched his first Top 10 debut on the Billboard Top Albums Chart, a rare feat for an instrumentalist to be grouped with Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga, Harry Styles etc.  He also stayed connected with fans throughout the pandemic by performing mini-concerts on Facebook Live that garnered 500K + views and added Boney James face masks to his website which are available for purchase at boneyjames.com.

Solid is the four-time GRAMMY nominated saxophonist’s seventeenth album as a leader and follows his smash 2017 release Honestly which became his eleventh #1 Billboard Contemporary Jazz Album.

All of Solid’s eleven tracks were produced and written or co-written by James. Three songs—“Full Effect,” “Tonic” and the title track—were built from licks played at sound-check by touring guitarist Kendall Gilder on the road in support of Honestly. “I said, hey, what’s that riff you’re playing?” James recalls, “And Kendall said, ‘that’s just something I’m messing around with.’ I got my iPhone and recorded them, then took it home and wrote the songs!”

Four other songs were initiated by longtime James collaborator, acclaimed writer/producer Jairus ‘J-Mo’ Mozee (Anderson Paak, Nicki Minaj, Anthony Hamilton). One of those, “Be Here,” was ultimately transformed into Solid’s Adult Urban single featuring special guest Kenny Lattimore, best known for his Top 10 R&B hit “For You.”

Boney James’ personal relationship with music has never been anything but solid. Picking up the sax at age 10 in his native New Rochelle, New York, “I immediately loved it, and it pretty quickly became my favorite thing to do.” By the time he entered his teens, James was gigging with bands, and he turned pro at 19. He apprenticed as a sideman for artists like Morris Day, The Isley Brothers, Teena Marie and many others, touring and doing sessions for seven years before cutting his first solo album in 1992. The independently released Trust led immediately to a major label deal and a string of increasingly successful recordings and nonstop touring.

Now a four-time GRAMMY nominee with four RIAA Gold records and career sales topping three million units, James continues to defy musical genres; A two time NAACP Award nominee, a Soul Train Award winner and named one of the Top 3 Billboard Contemporary Jazz Artists of the Decade.

James lives in Los Angeles with his wife of 35 years Director/Actress Lily Mariye.

Round Hill Records today announced that the GRAMMY® Award-nominated trio The Record Company released their first new single “Talk To Me” on June 23rd while continuing to tour throughout the U.S.

With this new offering, band members Chris Vos (guitar, lead vocals, harmonica), Alex Stiff (bass, backing vocals), and Marc Cazorla (drums, backing vocals) are kicking off their next musical era with a single that features guitar cries through a hypnotically hummable bassline and head-nodding beat. A common theme on this record was keeping the sound raw and getting back to basics.

“With ‘Talk To Me,’ we used the same junky yard sale drum set heard on our earliest recordings. When the question came up later whether to re-record the song in a more professional studio setting, we voted that the original spirit was more important than polish, and we left that groove intact. A lot of the album follows this same vision,” said bassist Alex Stiff. Set to a thick 60s Hofner bass and Motown inspired drum groove, "Talk To Me" explores the unfinished business of a love lost, or an addiction that’s still knocking on the front door. The Record Company finds some of that unrehearsed, live sound and hot-off-the-paper vocals seen on many of their earliest recordings.

The Record Company has experienced everything as a family since they formed in 2011 and garnered recognition with their 2016 debut, Give It Back To You. The release earned a GRAMMY® Award nomination in the category of “Best Contemporary Blues Album” and spawned “Off The Ground,” a #1 single at AAA Radio that has tallied nearly 40 million total streams and counting. The band then went on an extensive tour with John Mayer, before headlining across the country and accruing a cadre of fans. Prior albums from The Record Company include All Of This Life (2018) and Play Loud (2021).

Now in 2023, a new chapter has begun.  The trio were in the studio working on a new album in late December 2022 when they received a call from their then record label saying that they were being dropped just days before Christmas. Proving their resilience and taking rejection as a rite of renewal led the band down a new path, creating the raw, self-produced, blues-based music that harkens back to their roots.

These “roots” would include half-working dumpster guitars, no-name drum sets from garage sales, no click tracks or studio tricks, all recorded in the bass player’s living room. “Almost every band you love at some point tends to drift away from that raw spark that made them unique in the first place,” says drummer Marc Cazorla. “They search for bigger sounds, bigger budgets, more expensive instruments, producers, mixers, etc. We’ve been subject to that as well, but now we’ve come back full circle to what matters most: making raw, honest music that moves peoples’ souls.”

The Record Company signed to Round Hill Records earlier this year and are managed by Jeff Castelez and his Cast Management team with UTA (Scott Clayton and Buster Phillips) representing the band for touring. They are set to tour throughout the year with plans to release a new album in the fall of 2023.
