Best Bluegrass Album GRAMMY Award goes to the Del McCoury Band for their recent release, The Streets of Baltimore.  The band is led by living legend and national treasure, Del McCoury.  His two sons Ronnie and Rob McCoury play two parts of an immensely skilled quartet with Jason Carter, and Alan Bartram. The Del McCoury Band will perform in Miami at the 3rd Annual Virginia Key GrassRoots Festival on Saturday February 22nd, 2014.

Del McCoury is the ultimate bluegrass ambassador, persevering with humility, good humor, adventurousness, and enthusiasm for decades.  Graciousness spanned the generations last night at the GRAMMY's.  "That one's all Dad's!" said son Ronnie McCoury upon receiving their latest GRAMMY Award.  Del says of the album, "I just put together a group of songs that I liked and then we got into the studio and tried to make them sound good!".  His 75th Birthday will take place on February 1st, and it's clear that Del is as inspired and creatively brilliant as ever.

The Del McCoury Band is the most awarded Bluegrass band in the world, and deservedly so. The group has won more than three-dozen International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Awards, including an astonishing 8 wins for Entertainer of the Year. This is their second GRAMMY Award, having won Best Bluegrass Album in 2006 for The Company We Keep.

Del McCoury himself has won 31 IBMA Awards, including Entertainer of the Year (9 times) and Male Vocalist of the Year (4 times). In 2003 he was inducted into the legendary Grand Ole Opry, received a National Heritage Fellowshop lifetime achievement award from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2010, and the following year was elected into the IBMA Hall of Fame. His son and the group's mandolin player, Ronnie McCoury, won the IBMA Award for Mandolin Player of the Year for 8 consecutive years. The group's Jason Carter has garnered 3 IBMA Fiddle Player of the Year trophies.

The Del McCoury Band is at the top of the bluegrass world and truly the torchbearer for the genre. The world-class ensemble delivers robust melodies, eloquent harmonies, and extraordinary musicianship, performing both traditional and original compositions. The unmistakable authenticity of their music, along with their willingness to evolve, welcoming new sounds and opportunities, garners them passionate bluegrass fans along with a surprisingly diverse crowd of unlikely enthusiasts.

"Del epitomizes the bluegrass musician from the previous era, and also this one...You can finally make a living playing bluegrass, and a large part of it is because of Del McCoury...For him to have come along this far is a testament to his will to stick it out, but at the same time, when he saw that he was going to be able to do it, he started really, really enjoying it, and that's when he started making the best music of his career." says acclaimed resonator guitarist, member of Alison Krauss + Union Station, and producer of several of McCoury's albums, Jerry Douglas.

On Saturday February 22nd, The Del McCoury will perform at the Virginia Key GrassRoots Festival at 5:30pm. The Festival will take place just minutes from downtown Miami at the Historic Virginia Key Beach Park, located across from the Seaquarium on the Rickenbacker Causeway, en route to Key Biscayne. The event takes place over 4 days, with over 50 performing groups, beach camping available, a huge Kids Village, musical instrument and dance workshops, and much more.

Along with the Del McCoury Band, Festival performers on Saturday February 22nd, 2014 include Donna The Buffalo, Elizabeth Cook, Oliver Mtukudzi & the Black Spirits, ChocQuibTown, John Brown's Body, Driftwood, Preston Frank & His Solieau Zydeo Band, Monsieur Perine, and many more. Day tickets for Saturday are $35 in advance or $40 at the gate, 4-Day tickets are $100 in advance, $120 at the gate.

GrassRoots is here to stay, reaching the five-year benchmark in the notoriously selective entertainment scene of Miami, Florida.  With enormous support from the Miami community, GrassRoots, a not for profit organization, has lived through winter tropical storms and the dominance of the electronic music scene to bring a dynamic Roots festival to the Historic Virginia Key Beach Park each February for the last 4 years.  The Virginia Key GrassRoots Festival brings the organization's event lineup to four annual festivals; one each season along the east coast. The unique Miami music world, which blends diverse influences from Cumbia to Afro-Cuban beats, has enveloped this standout festival with a truly authentic Miami sound.

This year's 5th annual Virginia Key GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance features a lineup that includes The Family Stone, of Sly and the Family Stone infamy, Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires, The Wood Brothers, Donna The Buffalo, Danay Suarez, Holy Ghost Tent Revival, The Magic City Hippies, Big Mean Sound Machine, Locos Por Juana, and many more.

Lineup Highlights - The rise of Charles Bradley is a story of rough times and redemption. This soul virtuoso, discovered by Daptone Records has played South By Southwest, Newport Folk Festival and Bonnaroo and cemented his place in the Psych-Rock revival with the release of his second album Victim of Love. The Man Rolling Stone Magazine calls "The Screaming Eagle of Soul" performs Saturday February 20th at 6pm on The GrassRoots Meadow Stage.

The Family Stone - "Everyday People." "I Want to Take You Higher." "Hot Fun in the Summertime." "Family Affair." "Dance To The Music." These songs are the soundtrack of how many dance parties? The Family Stone changed American music forever with their gritty blend of funk, soul, R&B, and psychedelia.  They play Saturday February 20th at 10pm on the GrassRoots Meadow Stage.

The Wood Brothers -These masters of folk and blues have recently voyaged towards rock's electric shores. Their most recent album, Paradise, is their 6th studio effort, a taste of the magnetic chemistry so apparent in their live performances. Chris Wood, of Medeski, Martin and Wood, his brother Oliver and now permanent third member Jano Rix on drums create a powerful trio on stage. Americana finds it's way to a new generation through the virtuosic musicianship of The Wood Brothers.

This years festival will also feature the 2nd annual GrassRoots Culture Camp including instrumental workshops, cooking classes, yoga and camping and will run from February 14th-17th.  A full schedule of kids activities, healing and movement arts, Sustainability workshops and demos, handmade crafts and world cuisine will be available at the Virginia Key GrassRoots Festival, February 18th-21st.

Wed, 05/22/2019 - 11:02 am

The 29th Annual Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance will take place Thursday, July 18th - Sunday, July 21st at the Trumansburg Fairgrounds in Trumansburg, NY. Featuring over 75 carefully curated bands on 4 Stages over the course of 4 Days - our festival is designed to dazzle you with diversity rather than wow you with big names. Sure, we have our fair share of “headlining” acts, but it’s the bands you have never heard that may impress you the most.

Our 2019 lineup includes the Grammy winning island-infused-blues stylings of Taj Mahal Quartet, the improvisational Americana, country, bluegrass and rock & roll of Railroad Earth, the harmonious-soulful-folk of activists and songstresses Rising Appalachia, the alt-country and witty storytelling of Todd Snider, and the Cajun-flavored-country-folk-rock of Donna the Buffalo!

As you can see, our headliners are about as “GrassRoots” as it gets, since each have their musical roots planted firmly in traditional forms of American music. We also are pleased to bring you sounds that represent the culture and heritage of other areas of the world, like: BKO from Mali, The Garifuna Collective from Belize, and the Cuban sounds of Miami based Cortadito...whose roots stretch across oceans.

Fri, 03/05/2021 - 1:10 pm

As sad as we are to have to postpone this year's Spring Shakori Festival to the Fall, October 7-10, 2021 due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, we are so grateful to all of those who have been working so hard on the front lines to continue brightening the light at the end of this tunnel.

And so, in the spirit of taking the first step to safely bring us all together again, we are very excited to announce GrassRoots Live! at Shakori Hills: an intimate, Pod-based, socially-distanced, limited capacity series of one night concerts on the Meadow Stage at Shakori Hills that will begin on April 17 with Keller Williams and end on June 11 & 12 with Donna The Buffalo. Working closely with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, we have created a Pod-based layout at Shakori Hills' Meadow Stage allowing up to six (6) people in an 8 x 8 feet Pod that is socially-distanced from other Pods with masks and social distancing required everywhere in the venue other than your Pod. After much planning and discussion, we feel very confident in our plans to do our part in providing a safe live-music experience this spring and we hope to see you and your Pod there!

Tickets are now On-Sale and more Information can be found here.

What a year it has been without all of you in our lives. We couldn't feel more confident in our plans, team and bands to take this first step safely bringing us back together (but distanced) to intimately yet safely be a part of the magic of GrassRoots and the live music that is created in that magical space once again. We hope this finds you warming up as the days get longer and the end of the tunnel draws near, and we hope to see you wearing your Mask dancing with your Pod at one of these shows below this spring!

With Love & Gratitude,

Your GrassRoots Festival

Mon, 03/29/2021 - 10:27 am

As the world continues to get closer to the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is clear that that we are not at the end of the tunnel just yet. Although vaccine distribution is increasing and COVID rates are declining, after much discussion, the Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance cannot in good conscience guarantee the communities' health and safety this summer and will be postponing its 30th Annual to July 21-24, 2022. The preceding 5th Annual Culture Camp will be postponed to July 17-20, 2022.

All previously purchased Admission Tickets and Camping Passes will be automatically transferred to 2022, but if ticket holders cannot attend the 2022 event, they may fill out a Ticket Transfer Request to transfer their tickets to any future GrassRoots Festival in either the Trumansburg, New York or Shakori Hills, North Carolina locations at GrassRootsFest.org.

As a 501(c) not-for-profit organization, this first ever year of no GrassRoots festivals has been challenging, but the organization is poised to make it through. Nevertheless, donations are always welcome and may be made at GrassRootsFest.org/donate.

Tickets for the 30th Annual Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance are on-sale now at GrassRootsFest.org/tickets.
